12:0 Նենգութիւն Խոսրովայ ընդդէմ Մուշեղի: Ամբաստանութիւն իշխանացն Յունաց զԽոսրովայ առ Մաւրիկ կայսր: Մաւրիկ պաշտպանէ Խոսրով եւ զՄուշեղ կոչէ ի պալատն: Խոսրով տայ կայսեր զաշխարհսն ըստ ուխտի խոստմանն:	12:0 Khosrov’s deceit against Musheł. Accusation of the Greek princes concerning Khosrov to the emperor Maurice. Maurice defends Khosrov and summons Musheł to the palace. Khosrov gives the emperor the lands according to the promise of the pact:
12:1 Եւ եղեւ ըստ աւուրց ինչ յետ անցանելոյ պատերազմին այնորիկ մեծի, մինչդեռ արքայն Խոսրով նստէր ի մէջ խորանին իւրում, եւ զաւրն Պարսից շուրջ զնովաւ բանակեալ, եւ զաւրն Յունաց հեռագոյն ի նոցանէ աւթիւ միով, ուրոյն բանակեալ հոծ բազմամբոխ լիութեամբ աւարաւ իւրեանց, եւ կային զառաջեաւ արքային ամենայն մեծամեծք նախարարք իւր - խաւսել սկսաւ արքայն եւ ասէ:	12:1 It happened in the days after that great battle had passed, while king Khosrov was sitting in his tent and the Persian army was encamped around him, and the Greek army was distant from them by a day’s journey, encamped separately with the vast amount of their booty, and all his greatest nobles were standing in the presence of the king, that the king began to speak, saying:
12:2 Իցէ ոք արդեաւք լեալ ի թագաւորաց աշխարհի, որ կարող է ըմբռնել զմեւս այլ թագաւոր զթշնամի իւր, զաւերիչ թագաւորութեան իւրոյ, եւ ոչ սպանցէ զնա եւ ջնջեսցէ զամենայն արու յաշխարհէ նորա, այլ առնիցէ զնա յորդեգիրս. թագ կապեալ նմա եւ ծիրանեաւք զարդարեալ մեծարիցէ, վանեալ զթշնամիս նորա, եւ հաստատեսցէ զնա յաթոռ թագաւորութեանն, եւ տուեալ նմա գանձ արքունական ի գանձուց իւրոց, արձակէ զնա բարեաւ գնալ զճանապարհ իւր: Այսպիսի պարգեւս շնորհեաց ինձ Մաւրիկ թագաւոր հայր իմ, զոր ոչ ոք կարէ ի մարդկանէ շնորհել որդւոյ իւրում սիրելւոյ:	12:2 ’Would there ever have been in a royal land someone who was able to seize another king, his enemy, the plunderer of his kingdom, who would not kill him and exterminate all the male line from his country, but would rather take him in adoption, crown him, honour him with purple (robes), defeat his enemies, install him on the throne of the kingdom, give him royal treasure from his own treasures, and release him to go his own way in peace? Yet such gifts my father king Maurice bestowed on me, which no one among mankind could give to his own beloved son. ’:
12:3 Պատասխանի ետուն ոմանք ի նոցանէ, եւ ասեն. «Արքայ, յաւիտեան կեաց. մեք ոչ գիտեմք, արժան իցէ շնորհ ունել եւ թէ ոչ: Զի ամենայն թագաւորութիւն գանձիւք հաստատեալ կայ. եւ դոքա զամենայն գանձս թագաւորութեան աւար վարեցին:	12:3 Some of them replied, saying: ’O king, live forever. We do not know whether it would be right to be grateful, or not. For every’ kingdom is secured by its treasures, and they have taken as booty all the treasures of this kingdom. ’:
12:4 Պատասխանի ետ արքայն եւ ասէ. «Զգանձս թագաւորութեան իմոյ ընդ կողս դոցա այսրէն արտաքս քարշեցից հանդերձ նոցունց աղխեալ գանձիւք, քանզի իմ է այն ամենայն: Բայց ինձ այս կարի է, զի ապրեցաւ տիրատեացն այն եւ գնաց: Այր քաջ է նա եւ վերստին այլ զաւրս գումարէ ի քաջաց ազգաց արեւելից:	12:4 The king replied and note: ’The treasures of my kingdom I shall extricate from them with their own accumulated treasures, because all that is mine. But for me this is the most important, that that traitor escaped and fled. He is a brave man and may once more gather another army from the valiant nations of the east:
12:5 Պատասխանի ետուն նմա եւ ասեն. «Զտիրատեացն զայն նոքա զերծուցին, քանզի մերով աչաւք իսկ տեսաք, զի կալաւ զնա Մուշեղն այն Մամիկոնեան, եւ ետ նմա երիվար եւ զէն, եւ արձակեաց»: Զայս ասացին՝ զի կամեցան ի վերայ նորա չարիս: Քանզի տեսանելով զհաւայս նորա չարաչարս՝ զարհուրեալ խոտորեցան սիրտք իւրեանց ի նմանէ:	12:5 They replied to him, saying: ’They liberated that traitor, because we saw with our own eyes that Musheł Mamikonean had captured him, but gave him a horse and arms and let him go. ’ They said this because they were evilly disposed against him. For when they saw his cruel courage, they were terrified and their hearts were inclined away from him:
12:6 Եւ ոչ ինչ էած զմտաւ արքայն, եթէ զինչ իցէ բանն այն. քանզի մանուկ տղայ էր եւ խակ: Եւ ոչ ինչ յիշեաց զխռովութիւն այնպիսի զաւրացն. այլ հաստատեաց զմիտս իւր ի վերայ բանիցն ստութեան, եւ ասէ. «Կոչեսցի այսր Մուշեղ, եւ կապեսցի ոտիւք եւ ձեռաւք, մինչեւ ես վասն նորա ծանուցից կայսեր:	12:6 The king did not at all understand what that statement might mean, because he was a young lad and immature. Nor did he recall the tumult of such troops, but set his mind on those false words and note: ’Let Musheł be summoned here and be bound feet and hands, until I inform the emperor about him. ’:
12:7 Ի նմին ժամու հրամայէ գրել նա յետկար, եւ արձակու զմի ի սուրհանդակացն առ Մուշեղ. «Փութով եկ, ասէ, գործ հասեալ է կարի կարեւորագոյն»: Եւ հրաման ետ փուշտիպանացն իւրոց եւ ասէ. «Պատրաստ լերուք, զի յորժամ եկեսցէ նա, եւ ես ձեռամբ նշանակեցից ձեզ՝ յանկարծակի զձեռս նորա յետս կալարուք եւ կապեցէք զնա. բայց պատրաստ լիջիք, զի այր քաջ է նա, եւ մի թէ կամ ինքն մեռանի, կամ զիս սպանանէ:	12:7 At the same time, he ordered a letter to be written, and despatched one of his messengers to Musheł. ’Come promptly, ’ he said, ’A very’ important matter has arisen. ’ He commanded his guards, saying: ’Be ready, so that when he comes and I shall signal with my hand to you, you may immediately hold his hands behind (his back) and bind him. But be prepared, because he is a valiant man, and perhaps either he will die himself or he will kill me:
12:8 Եւ թէ ինքն իսկ մեռանի՝ ես պատասխանի տաց կայսեր վասն նորա»: Սոյնպէս եւ բարապանացն պատուէր ետ, ասէ. «Զգոյշ կացէք, զի յորժամ եկեսցէ Մուշեղ ի դուռն խորանին իմոյ՝ ի բաց լուծէք ի միջոյ նորա զկամարն եւ զսուսերն, ասելով, եթէ «Ոչ է աւրէն զինու հանդերձ մտանել յանդիման թագաւորին:	12:8 And if he himself should die, I will have to give an account for him to the emperor. ’ He gave a similar command to the door-keepers: ’Take care that when Musheł comes to the door of my tent, you remove from his waist his belt and sword, saying that one is not allowed to enter before the king bearing arms. ’:
12:9 Արդ՝ մինչդեռ առնէր նա համար հանդիսի ի մէջ զաւրաց իւրոց, տեսանել զթիւ կենդանեացն եւ մեռելոց, որք անկան ի պատերազմին՝ եկն եկաց առաջի նորա սուրհանդակն եւ ասաց նմա ողջոյն, եւ մատոյց նմա զթուղթն:	12:9 So, while Musheł was making an accounting and review among his soldiers to see the number of living and dead, those who had fallen in the battle, the messenger came before him, greeted him and offered him the letter:
12:10 Իսկ Մուշեղայ առեալ զթուղթն՝ ասէ ցնա, եթէ «Ողջոյն իցէ եւ խաղաղութիւն»: Պատասխանի ետ սուրհանդակն եւ ասէ. «Ողջոյն է եւ խաղաղութիւն, եւ զայլազգ ինչ ես ոչ գիտեմ, բայց միայն զի հրամայեցաւ ինձ փութանակի կոչել զքեզ:	12:10 Musheł took the letter and said to him: ’Is it a greeting of peace? ’ The messenger replied: ’It is a salutation and peace; and I do not know anything else save only that it was commanded to me to summon you in haste. ’:
12:11 Եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի պատրաստեցաւ նա որպէս ի պատերազմ, քանզի արկ ի միտս իւր, եթէ գուցէ հասեալ ինչ իցէ գործ պատերազմի, կամ շնորհ ինչ իցէ պարգեւս փոխանակ վաստակոցն: Եւ առնու ընդ իւր արս երկու հազարս ի սպառազինաց՝ յազատաց եւ յանազատաց, զորս գիտէր արժանիս պատուոյ, եւ վստահ էր հեծելութեամբ:	12:11 Then immediately he equipped himself as for war, because he reckoned that perhaps some military action had arisen, or some gift would be offered him in return for his efforts. He took with him [2,000] fully armed men from among both nobles and non-nobles, whom he knew to be worthy of honour and in whose horsemanship he had confidence:
12:12 Էր գրեալ վասն նորա եւ առ Պատրիկն Յովհան, զի արձակեսցէ զնա, եւ նորա դարձեալ հրաման տուեալ նմա երթալ այնպէս պատրաստութեամբ, եւ հրամայեաց ամենեցուն նոցա արկանել զանձամբ զիւրաքանչիւր զսպառազինութիւն: Արկաւ եւ ինքն զանձամբ զսպառազինութիւն իւր: Վառեցան եւ գնացին:	12:12 He (Khosrov) had written concerning him also to the patrik Yovhan to let him go. So, the latter commanded him to set out equipped as he was, and he ordered them all to put on their arms. He himself put on his own armour. Thus, they equipped themselves and set out:
12:13 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ մտին ի մէջ բանակին եւ մերձ եղեն մաւտ ի մաշկապերճանն արքունի, եւ հրաման հասանէր ընդդէմ, մի երթալ այնքան բազմութեամբ, այլ բացագոյն նստուցանել զնոսա, եւ նմա սակաւ արամբք յանդիման լինել արքայի:	12:13 Now when they had entered the camp and had approached the royal pavilion, he was faced with an order not to proceed in such a great number, but to post most of them outside and to present himself to the king with a few men:
12:14 Եւ նորա ոչ առեալ յանձին առնել այնպէս, այլ գնաց զաւրութեամբք մաւտ ի դուռն խորանին արքունի. եւ զաւր Պարսից կացին շուրջ զխորանաւն սպառազինեալք. եւ իջեալ յերիվարէն՝ գնաց ի դուռն խորանին [Ծ] արամբք: Եւ զաւրն կային այնպէս զինեալ իւրաքանչիւր երիվարաւք:	12:14 He did not agree to do this, but went with his forces close to the door of the royal tent. The Persian army surrounded the tent, fully armed. Dismounting from his horse, he went to the door of the tent with [50] men. His troops remained as they were, armed and each on his horse:
12:15 Զարհուրեցաւ արքայն, եւ ամենայն զաւրք նորա. եւ սկսան ծածկել զնենգութիւնն: Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ եհաս ի դուռն խորանին՝ մատեան բարապանք դրանն եւ ասեն. «Լոյծ զկամարդ եւ զսուսերդ ի միջոյ քումմէ, եւ մերկեա ի քէն զսպառազինութիւն քո. զի ոչ է աւրէն մտանել առաջի թագաւորին»: Անկաւ կասկած ի սիրտս նորա, սկսաւ պատրաստել եւ կազմել զինքն յարձակումն:	12:15 The king was frightened, and all his army. They began to conceal their deceit. When he reached the door of the tent, the door-keepers approached and note: ’Remove your belt and sword and put off your armour, because it is not allowed to enter the king’s presence thus attired. ’ A suspicion fell into his heart, and he began to prepare and ready himself for escape:
12:16 Պատասխանի ետ բարապանացն եւ ասէ. «Ի մանկութենէ իմմէ սննդակից եղեալ եմ թագաւորաց ի նախնեաց իմոց եւ հաւուց, եւ այժմ հասեալ կամ ի դուռն արքունի, ի տեղի հանդիսի: Ես զսպառազինութիւնն իմ յանձնէ իմմէ ի բաց մերկացայց, եւ լուծից զկամարս եւ զգաւտիս յանձնէ իմմէ, զոր ոչ երբէք լուծանեմ ի տան իմում յուրախութեան: Եւ կամ ինչ արժան իցէ գիտել զչարութիւնդ Պարսից»: Եւ հրաման ետ միում ընթանալ մանկանցն, զի յառաջ մատուսցէ զզաւրն յաւգնութիւն. եւ ինքն դարձաւ անդրէն ի գնալ:	12:16 He replied to the door-keepers, saying: ’From my youth I have been raised by my ancestors and forefathers as a companion to kings; and now I have arrived at the royal court and the place of formality. Should I put aside my armour and remove my baldric and belt, which I never undo in my own house in festivity? Or should I recognize the malevolence of the Persians? ’ He commanded one of his young men to run and bring forward his troops in support, and he himself turned to go back:
12:20 Ազդ եղեւ արքայի, եթէ ոչ կամեցաւ այնպէս մտանել, այլ դարձաւ անդրէն եւ գնաց: Եւ սկսաւ թագաւորն ծածկել զչարութիւնն եւ ասէ. «Թողցի արդ ի բաց խորհուրդն այն. թող եկեսցէ, որպէս եւ կամեսցի»: Քանզի ինքն մանուկ էր, եւ զաւրութիւն զաւրացն սուղ ինչ եւ սակաւ: Կոչեն անդրէն եւ ասեն. «Հրաման ետ մտանել որպէս եւ կամիս»: Նա դարձաւ եւ ասէ. «Թող տեսից, եթէ զինչ բարի խորհեսցի տալ ինձ արքայից արքայ:	12:20 The king was informed that he did not wish to enter in that fashion, but had turned back and departed. The king began to conceal his perfidy and note: ’So let that plan be abandoned. Let him come as he wishes. ’ For he was a youth, and the strength of his army was weak and modest. They summoned him back, saying: ’He has commanded you to enter however you wish. ’ He returned, saying: ’Let me see what favour the king of kings may intend to bestow on me. ’:
12:21 Եւ եմուտ ի խորանն, զառաջեաւ արքայի եւթն արամբք, եւ խոնարհեցաւ ի վերայ երեսաց իւրոց, երկիր եպագ արքայի, եւ կանգնեցաւ: Եւ արքայ ոչ ձգեաց զձեռն իւր որպէս երեկն եւ եռանդն՝ ընդունել զնա եւ ողջունել, այլ կայր այնպէս յամառացեալ. եւ անդ կացին այսպէս յամառացեալք:	12:21 He entered the tent into the presence of the king with seven men, fell on his face, did obeisance to the king, and stood up. The king did not stretch out his hand as previously to receive and greet him, but sat sullenly as he was. And they stood there in this perverse fashion:
12:22 Երկեաւ արքայ եւ զանգիտեաց, եւ ոչ կարաց տալ հրաման՝ որպէս խորհեալ էր, եւ ասել կամ մեծ կամ փոքր՝ յերկիւղէն: Եւ նա դարձեալ ել փութանակի ի խորանէն. մատուցին նմա զերիվարն, հեծաւ եւ գնաց:	12:22 The king was frightened and uncertain; out of fear he did not dare give the command as he had planned, or to say anything - important or trivial. The other turned and hastily left the tent. They brought him his horse; he mounted and departed:
12:23 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ ետես զայն արքայ՝ յոյժ երկեաւ, եւ կամեցաւ ծածկել զվնաս իւր. յոտն եկաց ի գահոյիցն եւ ընթացաւ ի դուռն խորանին, ել արտաքս եւ արձակեաց զհետ նորա զոմն գլխաւոր նախարար: Ետ տանել աղ կնքեալ՝ երդումն, եւ կոչել անդրէն, «զի պատուով եւ մեծարանաւք գնասցես, ասէ, աստի, եւ մի համարիր ի միտս քո խորհել վասն քո այլազգ ինչ:	12:23 When the king saw that, he was greatly frightened and wished to conceal his plot. He stood up from the throne, ran to the door of the tent, went outside, and sent a leading noble after him. He had taken to him salt sealed as an oath, and summoned him, saying: ’So that you may depart hence with honour and respect, and not reckon in your mind that we have any other intentions toward you. ’:
12:24 Եւ նորա ոչ կամեցեալ, այլ գնաց ճանապարհ իւր: Արդ՝ նա խորհեալ նոցա զայս՝ յերրորդ ժամու դիմել ի վերայ խորանին եւ սպանանել զնա: Եւ հրաման տուեալ զաւրացն՝ որք սպառազինեալ շուրջ զխորանաւն Խոսրովու կային: Վասն զի եկեալ ի զգացումն եւ զաւրաց նորա զխռովութիւն դադարեցին ի խորհրդոյն եւ գնացին:	12:24 He did not so wish, but went his way. Then he planned this against them: at the third hour to attack the tent and kill him. And he gave the order to his troops who were standing armed around Khosrov’s tent. But he and his troops came to their senses; they desisted from their proposed sedition and departed:
12:25 Եւ եղեւ մինչդեռ երթային նոքա՝ ի դիմի հարաւ սոցա մի ոմն ի փուշտիպանաց արքայի, եւ ըմբռնեալ զնա՝ առին գնացին ընդ իւրեանս. եւ սպառնացաւ նմա Մուշեղ երդմամբ, զի եթէ ոչ պատմեսցէ նմա զեղեալն վասն նորա խորհուրդ՝ մեռցի:	12:25 While they were on their way, one of the king’s guards encountered them. They seized him and took him along with them. Musheł threatened him with an oath, that unless he told him the plot hatched against him he would be killed:
12:26 Իսկ նորա երդմնեցուցեալ զնա, զի մի տացէ զնա ի ձեռն արքայի. եւ պատմեաց զամենայն: Ապա ի միւսում աւուրն ընդ առաւաւտն գնացեալ ի դուռն Պատրկին Յովհաննու, ետես զնա եւ խաւսեցաւ զամենայն չարիսն, ունելով առաջի զոստիկանն փուշտիպանն, որ եւ նա եկաց եւ խաւսեցաւ զամենայն եղեալ բանս:	12:26 Then, having made him swear an oath that he would not hand him over to the king, he told everything. The next day, in the morning, he went to the court of the patrik Yovhan, saw him and recounted all the wicked plans, bringing forward the officer of the guards, who also stood up and related all the events which had occurred:
12:27 Խռովեցան իշխանքն եւ ամենայն զաւրն. բայց եւ նոցա յիշելով զերդումն եւ զխռովութիւնն կայսերն, ոչ ինչ ի վեր հանին զբանսն: Ասացին գրել առ թագաւորն եւ ծանուցանել նմա զամենայն չարիսն: Բայց ասաց Մուշեղ յանդիման ամենեցուն. «Եթէ ոչ մեռցի այրն այն՝ ի նորա ձեռն կորնչելոց է ամենայն երկիր Հռովմայեցւոց տէրութեանդ:	12:27 The princes and all the army were in turmoil; but remembering the oath and the emperor’s perturbation, they did not make the matter public. They said they would write to the king and inform him about all these wicked events. But Musheł declared in front of them all: ’Unless that man is killed, through him the whole territory of the Roman empire will be destroyed. ’:
12:28 Յայնմ ժամանակի գործեցին ընծայս, մեծ աւարամասն թագաւորին իւրեանց, պսակս եւ խոյր մի ի զմրուխտս եւ ի մարգարիտս յաւրինեալս, ոսկի եւ արծաթ բազում յոյժ, եւ ականս պատուականս չքնաղագիւտ, եւ հանդերձս պճնեալս ի զգեստուց՝ որ է զարդ իւրեանց յաւրինեալ թագաւորացն Պարսից, երիվարս արքունականս հանդերձ նոցուն իսկ արքունական կազմուածովքն:	12:28 Then they prepared gifts - a large part of the booty of their sovereign, crowns and a diadem set with emeralds and pearls, a great quantity of gold and silver, rare precious gems, and elegant robes from among the clothes which the Persian kings used for their adornment, and royal horses with their own royal equipage:
12:29 Եւ գործեալ ընծայս, եւ առաքեն հանդերձ աւետաւոր հրովարտակաւ, գրեալ եւ ամբաստանութիւն զարքայէն Խոսրովայ, եւ գումարեն զհետ ընծային հեծեալս չորեք հարիւր: Ազդ լինի Խոսրովայ, եթէ ետուն տանել ի գանձուց քոց՝ գանձ աւարամասն թագաւորին իւրեանց, եւ գրեցին զքէն ամբաստանութիւն:	12:29 Having prepared these gifts, they sent them with a messenger bringing the news, writing down also an accusation against king Khosrov; and they despatched with the gifts four hundred cavalry. Khosrov was informed: ’They have had removed from your treasures part of the booty as a treasure for their king, and have written an accusation concerning you. ’:
12:30 Եւ ընդոստուցեալ դառնութեամբ Խոսրով՝ արձակէ զկնի նոցա զաւր, զի հասցեն ի ճանապարհի եւ կորուսցեն զՄուշեղն յանկարծաւրէն գաղտաբար. եւ առեալ զգանձն արքունի՝ հասուսցեն առ նա:	12:30 Bitterly angry, Khosrov sent troops after them to catch them on their way and to slay Musheł promptly and secretly; taking the royal treasure, they were to bring it to him:
12:31 Այսպէս իմն փութանակի գիտացեալ եւ վասն իրացն եւ իշխանքն յունականք՝ եւ նոցա առաքեալ զկնի նոցա զաւր բռնագոյն. եւ հասեալ անդէն ի մաւտոյ՝ ոչ ապրեցուցին ի նոցանէ եւ ոչ մի: Եւ բանն ի վեր ոչ ել. եւ զաւարն տարեալ հասուցին ի պաղատն մեծաւ խնդութեամբ:	12:31 The Greek officers too quickly learned about these events and sent a very powerful force after them. When they caught them up, they let not a single one escape. And word of this did not get out. Taking the treasure, they brought it to the palace in great joy:
12:32 Ընկալաւ թագաւորն զընծայսն, եւ առաքէ հրովարտակ մեծաւ շնորհակալութեամբ ի ձեռն իւրոյ հրեշտակի, եւ գրէ առ նոսա ի բաց կալ ի խորհրդոյն յայնմանէ, զոր ամբաստանեալ զթագաւորէն: «Եթէ ոչ զգուշանայցէք անձին դորա՝ ի ձեռաց ձերոց խնդրեցից զդա»: Գրէ եւ առ արքայն՝ գոհութեամբ արձակել զամենեսեան:	12:32 The king received the gifts and sent a letter with profound thanks through a messenger of his. He wrote to them to abandon that intention of accusing the king: ’If you do not take care of his person, I shall seek account of him from your hands. ’ He also wrote to the king to release them all with thanks:
12:33 Յայնժամ արքայն Խոսրով ետ ամենեցուն ըստ իւրաքանչիւր չափուց պարգեւս, եւ արձակեաց յիւրմէ: Եւ իւր չու արարեալ յԱտրպատականէ՝ գնաց յԱսորեստան, ի բնիկ թագաւորական կայեանս իւր: Եւ հաստատեցաւ յաթոռ թագաւորութեան. եւ զխոստացեալ պարգեւսն կայսերն կատարեաց. ետ նոցա զԱրուաստան զամենայն մինչեւ ցՄծբին, եւ զերկիրն Հայոց. որ ընդ իւրով իշխանութեամբն էր, զտունն Տանուտերական մինչեւ զգետն Հուրազդան, եւ զգաւառն Կոտէից մինչեւ ցաւանն Գառնի եւ ցեզր ծովուն Բզնունեաց, եւ ցԱռեստաւան եւ զԳոգովիտ գաւառ մինչեւ ցՀացիւն եւ ցՄակու: Եւ կողմն Վասպուրական գնդին էր ի ծառայութիւն Պարսից արքային:	12:33 Then king Khosrov gave gifts to them all according to each one’s rank and dismissed them from him. He himself set out from Atrpatakan and reached Asorestan, his own royal residence. He was confirmed on the throne of the kingdom, and he carried out his promise of gifts for the emperor.
