30:0 Եւ արդ` տեսեալ զայս ամենայն չարիս տեառն Մամիկոնէից եւ Հայոց սպարապետին Վարդանայ, կոչեալ առ ինքն զամենայն ընտանիս իւր, զեղբարս եւ զազատս եւ զծառայս եւ զամենայն միահամուռ զբազմութիւն դրանն իւրոյ` սկսաւ խաւսել ընդ նոսա եւ ասել. Ես ոչ ուրացայ զԱրարչին իմ եւ զտէր Յիսուս Քրիստոս` կամաւ եւ կամ առ երկիւղի:	30:0 Now when Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans and the sparapet of Armenia, saw all of this wickedness he summoned his entire family, brothers, azats, servants and the entire multitude of his own court , and began speaking to them as follows: “I did not apostasize my Creator and lord Jesus Christ either voluntarily or out of fear:
30:1 քա՛ւ լիցի. եւ ոչ զվարդապետութիւն եւ զհաւատս սրբոյ Աւետարանին, զոր ուսոյց եւ հաստատեաց յիս ճշմարիտ հաւն իմ տէր Սահակ, մերժեցի յինէն. այլ առ վայր մի մինչեւ ի ժամս յայս յաղագս ձեր ամենեցուն գիւտի կորեայ պատճառանաւք, զի գտեալ զիս ձեաւք հանդերձ` ապաշխարեցից եւ կեցից:	30:1 God forbid. Nor did I repudiate the doctrine and faith of the holy Gospel which my honest grandfather, lord Sahak, taught and inculcated in me. Rather I erred for a moment, making pretexts until the present hour, for the salvation of all of you, so that being with you I might repent and live:
30:2 Վասն զի ուսեալ եմ եւ յիշեմ զքարոզութիւն սուրբ մարգարէիցն, թէ Ոչ կամիմ զմահ մեղաւորին, այլ զդառնալ նորա եւ զկեալն, եւ զոր ի միւսում վայրի սուրբ Հոգին ասէ, թէ Յորժամ դարձցիս եւ հեծեսցես` յայնժամ կեցցես:	30:2 For I have learned and remember the preaching of the holy prophets, that: ’I do not desire the death of the sinner, but his conversion and life’ [Ecclesiastes 18, 23]; or as the Holy Spirit says in another passage: ’In returning and rest you shall be saved’:
30:3 Արդ` փոխանակ զի թողի զնա պատճառանաւք առ վայր մի վասն ձեր` կամիմ ստուգութեամբ փոխանակ այնր թողուլ զամենայն ինչ իրս կենցաղոյս այսորիկ մինչեւ ի սպառ:	30:3 Now in exchange for having abandoned Him temporarily, for your sake, I would abandon totally all of these worldly goods:
30:4 Եւ որ ոք ի ձէնջ կամակից կարող էք լինել, արհամարհելով զամենայն սնոտի կեանս աշխարհիս, յանձն առեալ ձեաւք հանդերձ վասն անուան Քրիստոսի` ընտրեմ գնալ յաւտարութիւն:	30:4 Should any of you find it possible to share my intention, despising all the futile possessions of the land, then together with you for the name of Christ, I will choose to go into exile:
30:5 Եւ նորա խաւսեցեալ զամենայն այսպէս ընդ ընտանիս տանն իւրոյ` պատասխանի ետ նմա երանելի եղբայրն Հմայեակ եւ ասէ. «Փութա՛ կատարել զոր խորհիսդ, եւ մի՛ յապաղեր. քանզի ոչ ոք կարէ լինել երաշխաւոր անձին իւրում եւ ոչ ժամ մի:	30:5 When Vardan had said all of this to the family of his tun his venerable brother Hmayeak replied as follows: “Hurry and do as you planned, and do not delay, for no one can answer for himself for even an hour:
30:6 Աստուծով եթէ կեցցուք՝ եւ առանց խղճի մտաց վախճանի աւուրն դիպեսցուք, գամ մի չ կարացեալք վաղ եւ կամ անագան զերծանել ի մահուանէ. թէ՛ մուրողութեամբ իցէ եւ թէ աւտարութեամբ` նովաւ եւեթ կեցցուք եւ անուամբ նորա պարծեսցուք զաւրհանապազ:	30:6 If we live, it is because of God. So, let us not dread the day of our death, since no one can escape it, whether it comes sooner or later. Should we dwell in poverty or exile, only let us be succored by Him and let us take pride in His name every day:
30:7 Զուրացութեանն եւեթ զանունն ի բաց ընկեսցուք ի մէնջ, եւ խառնեալ ի հաւտն Քրիստոսի` կամաւ յանձն առցուք զամենայն վիշտս` որ եւ հասանէ ի վերայ մեր, եթէ սով, եթէ սուր, եւ կամ թէ յաւտարութեան` մուրողութիւն եւ վախճան:	30:7 Let us only cast off from ourselves the name of apostasy and mix with the flock of Christ, and we will bear willingly all the sorrows which we encounter—hunger, the sword, or in exile, mendicity and death:
30:8 Եւ այսպէս միաբանութեամբ արհամարհեալ զամենայն սնոտի մեծութիւն կենցաղոյս այսորիկ` առ ոչինչ համարեցան. այլ հանդերձ հաւանելովք ընդ ինքեանս դրամբ եւ ընտանեաւք դէմ եդեալ անցանել ի կողմանս իշխանութեանն Յունաց ճեպէին, ուր եւ թագուցանել միաբանութեամբ եւ կամ աստ անդր ցրուել զանձինս կարասցեն:	30:8 Thus, in unison did they scorn all the futile splendor of this world, considering it as nothing. Rather, together with those of their court and family who agreed with them, they hurriedly decided to go to the areas of Byzantine authority where they could live together in hiding, or could disperse here and there:
30:9 Եւ եկեալ հասանէին ի գիւղ մի, որոյ անունն էր Արամանայ, ի նահանգին Բագրաւանդայ, մերձակայ սահմանակից Բասենոյ եւ Տուարծատափու. ուր եւ սակաւ ինչ աւուրս կամեցեալ հանգչել, եւ զուշ եդեալ ճանապարհն գնալ պատրաստէին ստիպով:	30:9 They arrived at a village named Aramanay located in the state [nahang] of Bagrawand, bordering Basen and Tuaracatap’, where they wanted to rest for a few days and where they watchfully prepared to set off in haste:
30:10 Յանկարծակի իրազգաց եղեալ այսպիսի խորհրդոյ եւ գնացից յաշխարհէս Հայոց` զմեծէ սպարապետէն Հայոց, զտեառնէն Մամիկոնէից Վարդանայ, հանդերձ եղբարբք իւրովք, դրամբ եւ ամենայն ախիւ` իշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ, որ եւ մարզպան էր Հայոց ի ժամանակին, եւ ամենայն տանուտերացն Հայոց եւ սեպհացն` խորտակեալ սրտիւ զարհուրէին. զմտաւ ածեալ ամենեցուն, որք ի փրկութիւն անձանց իւրեանց ի խնդիր էին, թէ արդ գիտեմք, զի կորեաք ի սպառ, եւ ոչ է հնար մեզ զերծանել ի չ արէս յայսմանէ մինչեւ ի սպառ:	30:10 Now suddenly Vasak, prince of Siwnik’, who was the marzpan of Armenia at the time, and all of the tanuters and sepuhs of Armenia became informed about the plan and departure from the land of Armenia of Vardan, the great sparapet of Armenia and lord of the Mamikoneans, together with his brothers, court and entire equippage. They were dismayed and frightened. All who were concerned with their personal salvation realized that they were completely lost and that it would be impossible to escape from the evil facing them:
30:11 Քանզի տեղեկացեալ ճանաչէին ամենեքեան, թէ առանց առաջնորդութեան ազգին այնորիկ եւ ոչ մի ինչ իրք եւ գործք աշխարհիս Հայոց երթեալ էին ի գլուխ:	30:11 For all of them knew that without the leadership of that (Mamikonean) azg, no deed or work had been accomplished:
30:12 Խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ իշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ հանդերձ ամենայն տանուտերամբք Հայոց եւ աւագ սեպհաւք, եւ զմիտս ամենեցուն յիւր կամսն հաւանեցուցանէր, ասելով թէ «Պարտ է փութով զհետ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վարդանայ Մամիկոնէի քահանայս առաքել ընտիրս եւ արս աւագս ի տանուտերացս Հայոց, եւ աղաչանաւք դարձուցանել զնա այսրէն. զի առանց նորա մեր այս ամենայն կամք եւ խորհուրդք եւ ոչ մի ինչ վճարին:	30:12 Vasak, the prince of Siwnik’, held counsel with all the tanuters of Armenia and the senior sepuhs and persuaded all of them to his belief, that: “We must immediately send select priests and senior tanuters of Armenia after Vardan Mamikonean, Armenia’s general, to turn him back with their entreaties. For without him, all of our hopes and plans will come to naught:
30:13 Եւ արարեալ նամակ իշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ իւրով մատանեաւ` հրամայէր նամականի առնել եւ այլ ամենայն աւագ տանուտերացն Հայոց, եւ կնքեալ զնամականին իւրաքանչիւր ուրուք մատանեաւ` տայր բերել եւ զկնքեալ Աւետարանն ուխտին. եւ արս պատուականս յայտ արարեալ ի քահանայից, զերանելին Ղեւոնդ երէց, եւ զերանելի երէցն զԵրեմիա ի Նոր քաղաքէ, եւ զերանելի երէցն Խորէն ի Մրենոյ, եւ արս աւագս ի տանուտերացն Հայոց, զիշխանն Արշարունեաց Արշաւիր, զիշխանն Դիմաքսենից զՀմայեակ եւ զիշխանն Աբեղենից զԳազրիկ. եւ տուեալ ցնոսա իշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ զամենայն նամականին եւ զԱւետարանն երդման` դեսպանս արձակէր զկնի նորա:	30:13 Then Vasak, prince of Siwnik’, wrote a letter, signed it with his seal-ring, and ordered all the senior tanuters of Armenia to write letters and to seal them with their rings. He also had the sealed Gospel of the covenant brought forth. Then Vasak, prince of Siwnik’, selected the following men, entrusted them with all the letters and the Gospel on which the oath had been sworn, and sent them as emissaries after (Vardan). Among the venerable priests were: the presbyter Ghewond and the presbyter Eremia from [Nor k’aghak’] (Vagharshapat) the presbyter Xoren from Mren; among the senior tanuters of Armenia were: Arshawir, prince of Arsharunik’ Hmayeak, prince of Dimak’sean, and Gazrik, prince of Abeghean:
30:14 Որք հասեալ գտանէին զնա եւ որք ընդ նմայն էին` յառաջագրեալ գեաւղն Արամանայ:	30:14 They caught up with (Vardan) and those with him at the aforementioned village of Aramanay:
30:15 Եւ ազդ արարեալ` մտանէին զառաջեաւ, պատմէին երանելւոյն Վարդանայ տեառն Մամիկոնէից եւ Հայոց սպարապետին եւ առաջի եղբարցն իւրոց Հմայեկայ եւ Համազասպայ զպատճառս իւրեանց փութանակի հասանելոյն առ նոսա, զխորհուրդն եւ զխաւսս հանդերձ երդմամբ որ եղեն ամենայն Հայոց` միաբանութեամբ իշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ. յառաջ բերեալ եւ զԱւետարանն երդման` ունէին առաջի երանելւոյն Վարդանայ եւ եղբարց նորա:	30:15 Giving notice, they entered and related to the venerable Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans and sparapet of Armenia, and to his brothers Hmayeak and Hamazasp, the reason for their speedy pursuit of him, the counsel, words and vow which had occurred among all the Armenians with the concurrence of prince Vasak of Siwnik’. They brought that Gospel of the covenant before the venerable Vardan and his brothers:
30:16 Տային ի ձեռս նորա եւ զնամակն Վասակայ զտեառն Սիւնեաց եւ զայլոց ազատացն Հայոց, եւ զեպիսկոպոսացն եւ զսեպհացն, եւ պատգամ կարճառաւտիւ ամենեցուն բան, եւ ասէին ցերանելին, թէ «Դու աւադիկ հանդերձ եղբարբքդ եւ հաւանեալ ընտանեաւքդ, որք հոգացեալ են ապրեցուցանել ընդ քեզ զինքեանս` անձնապուրք լինիք. բայց մեք ամենեքեան կորնչիմք զանվախճան կորուստն:	30:16 They also presented him with the letters of Vasak, lord of Siwnik’, and of the other Armenian azats, bishops and sepuhs, as well as with a summarized message of all of their words: “You, chief [du awagik], together with your brothers and believing family who have thought to save themselves with you, have escaped. But all of us will be ruined with eternal destruction:
30:17 Վասն զի ոչ է հնար մեզ առանց ձեր, եւ ոչ զաւակի մերում` երբէք պատահել փրկութեան եւ կեալ:	30:17 For without you neither we nor our sons shall ever find salvation and life:
30:18 Բայց որպէս հոգացեալ խնամ տարէք ձեզ` նոյնպէս եւ զայսչափ զբազմութեան ոգիս մի՛ թողուք կորնչել. քանզի եմք աստ բազումք, որք եւ ազգախառն եւ արիւն ձեր եմք. պսակեցարո՛ւք եւ ընդ մեզ ի Քրիստոսէ, որպէս ցանկացեալ ջանայք ընդ ձեր միայն պսակիլն:	30:18 But as you have taken care to protect your own, do not abandon such a multitude of souls to be destroyed. For there are many of us who are of your blood and mingled with your azg. Let us, too, be crowned by Christ, just as you are striving that only your own folk be crowned:
30:19 Եւ զայս ամենայն բանս լուեալ ի քահանայիցն եւ ի նախարար պատգամաւորացն եկելոց`սուրբ սպարապետին Հայոց տեառն Մամիկոնէից Վարդանայ հանդերձ երանելի եղբարբքն իւրովք, եւ զսուրբ Աւետարան ուխտին տեսեալ, եւ զնամականին կարդացեալ զիշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ զմարզպանին Հայոց եւ զայլոց զիւրաքանչիւր ուրուք զընկերակցացն` պատասխանի ետ միաբանութեամբ ամենեցուն եւ ասէ:	30:19 Now when the blessed sparapet of Armenia and lord of the Mamikoneans, Vardan, and his venerable brothers heard all of these words from the delegation of priests and naxarars which had arrived, and when they saw the holy Gospel of the covenant, and read the letters of Vasak, prince of Siwnik’, the marzpan of Armenia, and each of their comrades, (Vardan) replied with the sentiments shared by all of them:
30:20 Ես եւ եղբարք իմ եւ ընտանիք կարեւոր ընտրելագոյն քան զամենայն ինչ որ է յաշխարհի` հաստատեալ եմք ընտրել եւ գտանել զոգւոցն փրկութեան գիւտ, եւ ուսեալ եմք հաստատուն եւ զանշարժ բանն, որ ասէ, - յոր եւ հաւատացեալ եմք անշարժութեամբ, - թէ Զի՞նչ աւգուտ է մարդոյ, թէ զաշխարհ ամենայն շահեսցի, եւ զանձն իւր կորուսցէ. եւ կամ զի՞նչ տացէ մարդ փրկանս ընդ անձին իւրոյ:	30:20 My brothers, family and I consider it the most important thing in the world that we choose and find salvation for our souls. We have learned and firmly hold to that unshakable belief that ’What does it benefit man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul; and what can a man give in place of his soul? ’:
30:21 Եւ ոչ զմեր եւեթ զոգւոց խնդրեմք զաւգուտն, այլ եւ ընդ այլոցն խնդամք ընդ փրկութիւն:	30:21 We do not merely seek benefit for our own souls, but would rejoice in the salvation of others’ as well:
30:22 Եւ ոչ` որ փախուցեալս եմք` յերկիւղէ ոք ինչ սրոյ կարծիցէ զայս զմէնջ, յորմէ ոչ ոք երբէք զանգիտեալ յազգիս մերում, եւ ոչ երբէք. եւ թէ ո՛րպէս ի վերայ ընկերի բարւոյ առաւել քան յանձին միշտ հոգալով զանձն եդեալ է այսմ տոհմի` զայն եւ ամենայն դուք, Հայք, գիտէք ստուգութեամբ ի պատմութենէ գրոց եւ ի լսելոյ ձեր յաւագաց:	30:22 Nor is it that we are fleeing out of fear of the sword. Anyone familiar with our azg would know that this could never be the case. All of you Armenians accurately know from historical writings and from listening to your seniors, that this tohm has always fought with its life more for the well-being of our comrades than for ourselves:
30:23 Բայց ի նենգաւոր խաբէութենէ ձերմէ, զոր արարեալ է ձեր ընդ նախնիսն մեր հանապազ` զայն ամենայն յիշելով գնացեալ եմք լինել անձնապուրծք. որպէս ցանկ ձեր մղեալ է զմեզ ի նեղ, եւ զձեր անձինս ի բաց ունելով` մեր միայն ազգս պատահեալ է վշտաց մեծաց եւ մահուց:	30:23 However, recalling all of your treacherous duplicity which you always displayed toward our ancestors, we have departed to escape. As you have always placed us in straits and yet held yourselves aloof, it has been our azg alone which has faced great sorrows and death:
30:24 Բայց սուրբ եւ երկնաւոր հրաւիրակիդ Աւետարանի ոչ կացեալ ոք է ընդդէմ ի մեր ազգէս, եւ ոչ մեք կամք. քա՛ւ լիցի:	30:24 But no one of our azg has stood opposed to the blessed and heavenly call of the Gospel, nor do we wish to. God forbid:
30:25 Դուք թէ միամտութեամբ վարիք եւ կամ երկմտութեամբ` դուք գիտէք եւ սուրբ Աւետարանդ, որ ճանաչէ զամենայն եւ դատի ըստ իւրաքանչիւր գործոցն:	30:25 You who stand behind it, as well as you who are of two minds must realize that the holy Gospel knows everyone and judges each one according to his deeds:
