71:0 Եւ անցուցեալ զաւուրս դառնաշունչ ձմերայնւոյ ցրտոյն` հասանէին գարնանային ժամանակի աւդոյն բարեխառնութեան. լսէին, թէ զաւր բազում խաղացեալ գայ ի Պարսից. եկեալ հասեալ են ի սահմանս Հերայ եւ Զարաւանդ գաւառի բազում զաւրագլուխք, որք էին այսոքիկ:	71:0 When the bitterly cold days of winter had passed and the mild days of spring had arrived, they heard that many troops were coming from Iran. The following numerous military commanders reached the borders of Her and Zarawand district:
71:1 Սուրէն պահլաւ, եւ Ատրներսեհ, փուշտիպանան սաղար, եւ Վին-ի-Խոռեան, եւ Ատրվշնասպն-ի-Տապեան, եւ Գդիհոն Սիւնեաց տէր. եւ ի սոսա թէպէտ եւ ըստ գահոյ էր ոք ի վեր` այլ հրամանատու եւ աւագ զաւրուն` փուշտիպանան սաղար էր:	71:1 Suren palhaw, Atrnerseh, the p’ushtipanan saghar, Vin-i-Xorhean, Atrvshnaspn-i-Tapean, and Gdihon, lord of Siwnik’. The commander and senior (official) of the army was the p’ushtipanan saghar, even though another (man) of them was higher by gah:
71:2 Փութացաւ եւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան, առեալ ընդ իւր եւ զսուրբ հայրապետն Հայոց զտէր Յոհան, յուսալով յաղաւթս առնն, թէ ամենայն ինչ ըստ նորա կամելոյ կատարի յԱստուծոյ. եւ գումարեալ զզաւրսն Հայոց` ճեպէր հարկանել նոցա ի դիմի անդէն զայն տեղեաւք. «Թերեւս ոչ, ասէր, լիցի անցանել բազմութեանն Պարսից ի միջոց կողմն աշխարհիս Հայոց:	71:2 Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, made haste. Taking with him the blessed patriarch of Armenia, lord Yohan (having faith in the man’s prayers, and hoping that God would grant everything according to his wishes), and assembling the Armenian troops, he hurried to take them to those places. He note: “Perhaps the multitude of Iranians has not yet crossed into the middle part of the land of Armenia:
71:3 Եւ առեալ ընդ իւր զնախարարսն եւ զազատս եւ զայլ ամենայն ռամիկն, որք կամաւոր խնդութեամբ երթային ի գործ պատերազմին, եւ չուեալք ի Դունայ զաւրքն Հայոց` ըստ աւուրս աւթեւանացն երթեալ հասանէին ի գաւառն յԱրտազ, եւ մաւտեալք ի գունդն Պարսից` բանակէին ի գիւղ մի, որում անուն էր Ներսէհապատ:	71:3 Vahan took along the naxarars, azats and all the rhamiks who willingly went to battle. The Armenian troops left Duin, and passing through the lodging places each day, they reached the district of Artaz. Approaching the Iranian brigade, they encamped in a village named Nersehapat:
71:4 Եւ սուրբ կաթողիկոսն Յոհան հրաման տայր ամենայն գնդին Հայոց` ջերմեռանդն խնդրով պարապել աղաւթից զգիշերն ողջոյն եւ խնդրել ի մարդասէր Փրկչէն` բարձր առնել զանուն իւր մեծ ի մէջ բազմութեան ժողովելոցն հեթանոսաց, տալ բաժին պարծանաց ծառայից իւրոց, եւ զմասն ամաւթոյ` ուրացողացն դասու:	71:4 The blessed kat’oghikos, Yohan, ordered the entire brigade of Armenians to fervently pray the entire night through and to ask the humane Savior to raise His great name among the multitude of assembled pagans, to give his servants glory and to shame the class of apostates:
71:5 Եւ այնպէս զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի, սքանչելի ասպետաւն Սահակաւ մարզպանաւ եւ ամենայն զաւրաւքն Հայոց, յորդոր սրտիւ խնդրելով յԱստուծոյ աւգնութիւն` կատարէին զսահմանեալ ժամս գիշերոյն. եւ հասեալք ի լոյս առաւաւտուն` սուրբ կաթողիկոսն Հայոց Յոհան աւրհնէր զամենեսեան, քաջալերեցուցանելով ասէր:	71:5 Thus Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, and the marvellous aspet Sahak, the marzpan, and all the Armenian troops with ardent hearts, beseeched God for help and so completed the designated hours of night. When the light of day broke, the blessed kat’oghikos of Armenia, Yohan, blessed everyone and said in encouragement:
71:6 Յուսացեալքն յԱստուած ոչ երբէք ամաչեցին. եւ ընտիր անաւթ սուրբ Հոգւոյն Պաւղոս գոչէ համարձակաձայն բարբառով եւ ասէ. Յոյս երբէք ոչ ամաչեցուցանէ, յորոց սիրտս սէրն Աստուծոյ սփռեալ է:	71:6 Those who place their hopes in God are never disappointed. For, as that select vessel of the holy Spirit, Paul, exclaimed in a loud voice: ’Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts’:
71:7 Զաւրացարո՛ւք ի տէր եւ ի զաւրութիւն բազկի նորա, եւ կարող լինիք զամենայն նետս մուխս չարին շիջուցանել, զերեւելիս եւ զաներեւոյթս:	71:7 Grow mighty in the love and power of His arm, and you will be able to extinguish all the fiery arrows of satan, visible and invisible:
71:8 Եւ մի՛ ոք ի բազմութիւն զաւրու անաւրինացն հայեցեալ զարհուրիցի ինչ. վասն զի լինելով ընդ ձեզ Աստուած` բազմագոյնս զձեզ ցուցանէ նոցա, եւ շարժեալ իբրեւ զխռիւ ի սաստիկ հողմոյ, ցրուեալ ընդ երեսս դաշտացդ եւ բլրոց` վեր ի վայր կորուսանէ:	71:8 Let no one be in any way frightened seeing the multitude of troops of the infidels. For, since God is with you, he will make your numbers appear greater to them, and, resembling briars tossed by a severe wind, he will disperse them over the face of the plains and hills, and totally destroy them:
71:9 Արդ` աւրհնեսցէ զձեզ աջ հզաւրին եւ զաւրացուսցէ զձեզ, առաջնորդեսցէ եւ յաղթող արասցէ. նմա փառք եւ Որդւոյ իւրում եւ սուրբ Հոգւոյն յամենայն յաւիտեանս. ամէն:	71:9 Now, may the right hand of the Almighty bless you, strengthen you, guide you, and make you victorious. Glory to Him, His Son, and the holy Spirit for all eternity. Amen:
71:10 Եւ ասացեալ ամենեցուն զամէնն` պատրաստեցան ի պատերազմն. եւ զինեալ գունդքն Հայոց ընդդէմ թշնամեացն` լինէր եւ երանելին Յոհան յաղաւթս:	71:10 When everyone had said “Amen,” they prepared for war. As the Armenian brigades armed against the enemy, the venerable Yohan continued praying:
71:11 Սկսանէր այնուհետեւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան յաւրինել ըստ պատշաճի զիւրաքանչիւր կողմն ճակատուն:	71:11 Then Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, began to organize his side of the front, as was proper:
71:12 Զմիջոց կողմնն բազում այրուձիովն տայր ի ձեռն լաւի առն Սահակայ մարզպանին ասպետի. եւ ի կողման աջոյ թեւին կարգէր զԲաշղ Վահեւունի զԲաբգէնն Սիւնի եւ զԱտոմն Գնունի եւ զՓապակն Պալունի, իւրաքանչիւր այրուձիով եւ այլ եւս յաւելուածով. եւ յահեկէ կողմանէ հանդերձ ուխտասէր Կամսարականաւքն եւ իւր սիրելի եղբարբքն, Վահանաւ, Ներսեհիւ եւ Հրահատաւ. եւ ընդ աջմէ իւրաքանչիւր այրուձիով գնդացն` կազմէր զինքն:	71:12 He entrusted the middle section to that good man, aspet Sahak, the marzpan, along with many cavalrymen. In the right wing he designated Bashgh Vahewuni, Babgen Siwni, Atom Gnuni, and P’apak Paluni, each with his cavalry, and others besides. On the left were the oath-loving Kamsarakans and their beloved brothers Vahan, Nerseh, and Hrahat. He placed himself to the right of each of the cavalry brigades:
71:13 Պատրաստէր եւ զայլ արս աւագս ընտիրս այրուձիով հանդերձ եւ Վրենաւ Վանանդացւով. առ որս եւ առաքէր զՊապ Արտակունեաց, զայր ոստանիկ, զորդի Բաբոցի, ասել ցիւրաքանչիւր կողմանց աւագս, թէ «Զնշանս հզաւրագոյն արանց, զոր յառաջագոյն տեղեակ եմք զարանց Պարսկաց եւ զԿատշաց եւ զգնդին Սիւնեաց` տեսանեմ զի դէպ ի մեզ դիմեալ գան. արդ` դուք մեղմով երթայք, եւ ուշադրեալ հայեցարո՛ւք ի մեզ. թող մեզ նախ լինի յարձակել. եւ եթէ շնորհիւն Քրիստոսի մեք զմեր կողմնն շարժեալ փախուցանեմք` ապա այլ կողմանքն մեր եւ ձեր առաջի ոչ կարեն կալ:	71:13 He also prepared other senior men with select cavalry and Vren Vanandac’i, He sent Pap Artakunik’ (an ostanik man, the son of Baboc’) to inform the seniors of each section that: “Opposite us and approaching, I see the banners of the mightiest men, about whom we have been informed earlier—Iranian men, the Katshac’, and the Siwnik’ brigade. Go slowly and carefully watch us. Let us be the first to attack. If, by the grace of Christ, we can put them to flight by moving our section, then they will be unable to get before our other sections and you:
71:14 Եւ Պապայ տարեալ զպատգամն սպարապետին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի առ իւրաքանչիւր աւագս կողմանցն, թէպէտ եւ կամէին ըստ հրամանի զաւրավարին առնել, այլ ստիպով հասեալ գունդն Պարսից յիւրաքանչիւր թեւ կողմանցն` ոչ տային պարապել, այլ դղրդեալ զկողմն աջոյ, ուր Բաշղն Վահեւունի էր` փախուցանէին:	71:14 When Pap took the message of Armenia’s sparapet, Vahan Mamikonean, to the seniors of each section, although they wanted to act according to the general’s order, the brigade of Iranians quickly reached each wing of (each) section, and they did not have time. Clashing with the section on the right, where Bashgh Vahewuni was, they put it to flight:
71:15 Եւ տէր Սահակ ասպետ յարձակեալ նիզակաւ ի վերայ փուշտիպանաց սաղարի` վրիպեցին ի միմեանց զնիզակսն երկոքեան, եւ մաւտեալ առ միմեանս երիվարացն` բուռն հարեալ զմիմեանց հերաց եւ կռուէին:	71:15 Lord Sahak, the aspet, attacked the p’ushtipanac’ saghar with his spear. Both of them wounded each other with their spears, and approaching each other’s horses, they seized each other by the hair and fought:
71:16 Եւ տեսեալ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի, թէ աղմկեցան զաւրքն Հայոց եւ տկարացան առաջի թշնամեաց, ձայն արարեալ առ Վրէն Վանանդացի` «Յառաջեա՛, ասէ, ի վերայ թշնամեացն եւ ձեռն ի գործ արա պատերազմել:	71:16 When Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, saw that the Armenian troops were crying out and weakening before the enemy, he called to Vren Vanandac’i: “Advance against the enemy and do battle:
71:17 Եւ նորա զարհուրեալ` ասաց, եթէ «Ոչ եմ կարող. յիս ինչ ապաստան յայսմ ժամու դու մի՛ լինիր:	71:17 But the latter, terrified, called back: “I am unable. Right now, do not put your hopes on me:
71:18 Եւ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի զաւրացեալ սրտիւ, եւ նշանաւ խաչին կնքեալ զինքն` հանդերձ Կամսարականաւքն երկոքումբք յարձակէին ի վերայ հասելոց սոցա թշնամեացն. եւ ոչ ինչ բնաւ տուեալ կալ առաջի, այլ շարժեալ սաստկապէս զկողմն իւրեանց` ի փախուստ դարձուցանէին. եւ առեալ զթեւն զայն` արկանէին զմիւս եւս թեւովն զմիջոցի կողմանն. եւ արկեալ առաջի զկողմանցն երկոցունց զգունդսն` անթիւ բազմութիւն արանց քաջաց ի փոքր լանջակողմանն դիաթաւալ յերկիր կործանէին եւ սաստիկ արեանց հանէին ճապաղիս:	71:18 Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, took heart, made the sign of the Cross over himself, and, with the two Kamsarakans, attacked the enemies who were advancing against them. They allowed nothing to stand in their way, and moving their section forward, they put (the Iranians) to flight. With that wing, they entered into the midst of the other wing. Before the two brigades they herded a countless multitude of brave men to the small shoulder of the mountain where they killed them, causing a great bloodletting:
71:19 Բայց միայն Վինն Խոռեան երկուք եւս այլ զաւրաւոր նիզակակցաւք զաւրու դարձեալ ընդդէմ խիզախէր. ուր անդէն առ նմին քաջ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան սատակէր հզաւրեղապէս. եւ զԱտրվշնասպն Տապեան տէրն Շիրակայ Ներսեհն Կամսարական, եւ այլքն ամենեքեան իւրաքանչիւր զբազում արս քաջս ընկեցեալ յերկիր կործանէին:	71:19 Only Vin Xorhean with two other powerful comrades-in-arms audaciously came back to fight them. Vahan Mamikonean, the brave general of Armenia, went and forcefully killed him. Nerseh Kamsarakan, the lord of Shirak, killed Atrvshnasp Tapean, and each of the other (Armenians) killed many brave (Iranian) men:
71:20 Եւ հայեցեալ յայն` գունդն Բարշղի եւ այլ փախստէիցն Հայոց, եւ տեսեալ, թէ բեկաւ ոյժ զաւրու գնդին Պարսից, եւ երթան փախստական առաջի գնդին զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ` ոգի առեալ զաւրանային. եւ դարձեալք անդրէն եւ զկնի հալածչացն եղեալք` զբազումս սպանանէին, եւ զբազումս արկեալ առաջի` հալածականս առնէին:	71:20 When Barshgh’s brigade and the other Armenians who had fled saw that the might of the Iranian brigade had been shattered, and that (the Iranians) were fleeing before the brigade of Armenia’s general, Vahan, they took heart and were fortified. They turned back and chased after (their) pursuers, killing many and pursuing many others whom they had before them:
71:21 Եւ լինէր առաւելագոյն թիւ կոտորելոցն ի գնդէն Պարսից, քան թէ զերծելոցն փախստէիցն. վասն զի շատ եւս լինէր համար մեռելոցն ի տեղիս տեղիս վիրաւորացն, քան թէ կոտորելոցն ի գնդէն Պարսից անդէն ի տեղւոջն պատերազմի:	71:21 The number of those slain from the Iranian brigade exceded the number who had escaped. And the number of those who died of wounds in various places was greater than those slain from the Iranian brigade at the site of the battle:
71:22 Եւ դարձեալ գունդն Հայոց բարի անուամբ եւ բազում փառաւք, լաւ աւարաւ եւ սաստիկ ընչիւք առ պատուական կաթողիկոսն Հայոց Յոհան ի բանակն, փառաւորելով եւ աւրհնելով զտուիչն այնպիսի յաղթութեան զՔրիստոս. որոյ ընդ առաջ ելեալ յաղթող գնդին` ցնծալից սրտիւ աւրհնէր զնոսա աւրհնութեամբ բազմաւ, եւ զուարճացեալ ոգւով զաւրութեան սուրբն, եւ ասէր ցամենեսեան:	71:22 The Armenian brigade returned to the camp and to the honorable kat’oghikos of Armenia, Yohan, with a good name, much glory and booty, and an enormous amount of goods, glorifying and blessing Christ, the granter of such a victory. (Yohan) went before the victorious brigade with a joyful heart, giving them many blessings and, gladdened by the spirit of strength, he said to all of them:
71:23 Ուրախ եմ յոյժ, եւ բանիւ վճարել զխնդութիւնս սրտի ոչ կարեմ: Բայց եւս առաւել զուարճացեալ բերկրիմ, տեսանելով զԱստուած հաշտ ընդ ձեզ. քանզի յաղթութիւնս խնդացուցանէ զիս, այլ եւս առաւել բերկրիմ` զՔրիստոս տեսանելով գործակից ձեզ, որ ետ ձեզ` յաղթել, եւ ամաչեցոյց զհակառակորդս արդարութեան: 23 Եւ Աստուած որ զաւրացոյցն զձեզ այժմ` նա զաւրացուսցէ զձեզ հանապազ, եւ եղեալ ընդ ձեզ` մի՛ թողցէ զձեզ մինչեւ ի սպառ:	71:23 I am extremely happy and unable to express the joys of my heart in words. But I am even more delighted to see that God is reconciled with you. For though victory has caused me to rejoice, I am even more delighted to see that Christ is your colleague who made you triumph and shamed the opponents of justice. 23 And may God Who now strengthened you, always strengthen you, and be with you, and never leave you, to the very end:
