T’ēodoros Ṙshtuni and other princes submit to the Ismaelites. Battle between Greeks and Ismaelites at Nakhchawan, and destruction of the Greeks. Capture of Karin; ravaging of the lands of Armenia, Ałuank’, and Siwnik’ by the Ismaelites, and the giving of hostages. Death of T’ēodoros Ṙshtuni. Hamazasp Mamikonean is appointed prince of Armenia. The Catholicos Nersēs returns to the throne of the Catholicosate and completes the construction of the church of Zuart’nots’:
52:1 Հայք ապստանբին յԻսմայելացւոց. կոտորումն պատանդացն. Մուշեղ Մամիկոնեան ի բաց կայ ի ծառայութենէ Իսմայելացւոց եւ կոչի ի պաղատն: Խռովութիւն ի մէջ զաւրացն Իսմայելի. բաժանել նոցա ի չորս մասունս եւ կոտորել զմիմեանս: Յաղթել Մաւիասայ հակառակորդաց, միապետել եւ առնել խաղաղութիւն: Վերջաբան:	52:1 The Armenians rebel from the Ismaelites; slaughter of the hostages. Musheł Mamikonean abandons his submission to the Ismaelites and is summoned to the palace. Disturbance among the Ismaelite army; their division into four parts and mutual slaughter. The victory of Muawiya over his opponents, his sole rule and making of peace. Conclusion:
52:2 Իսկ Մուշեղ Մամիկոնէից տէրն ապստամբեալ ի Յունաց կողմանէն՝ հնազանդեցաւ ի ծառայութիւն Իսմայելի. եւ ի նմին ամի զաւրն Իսմայելի որ ի Հայաստան աշխարհի՝ կալան ի ծագաց ի ծագս զերկիրն ամենայն: Եւ Թէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէրն եւ ամենայն իշխանքն աշխարհին միաբանեալ հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն, եւ ամենայն իրաւք փութային զկամս նոցա կատարել, զի երկիւղ անհնարին մահու կայր ի վերայ նոցա:	52:2 Then Musheł, lord of the Mamikonean’, rebelled from the Greeks and submitted to Ismael. In the same year the army of Ismael that was quartered in Armenia took control of the whole land from end to end. T’ēodoros, lord of Ṙshtunik’, and all the princes of the country submitted in unison, and in every way hastened to carry out their desires, because fear of a dreadful death hung over them:
52:3 Յամին յայնմիկ ի ձեռն նախանձու եղբաւր իւրոյ մատնեցաւ երանելի այրն աստուածասէր Արտաւազդն Դիմաքսեան եւ տուաւ ի ձեռն անողորմ դահճի Հաբիբն անուանեալ զաւրավարի, որ նստէր յԱրուճն Աշնակի: Եւ սպան զնա սատակմամբ չարաչար մահուամբ:	52:3 In that year through the envy of his brother the blessed and pious Artavazd Dimak’sean was betrayed and handed over to the merciless executioner, the general called Habib who resided in Aruch of Ashnak. He put him to death in an exceedingly cruel fashion:
52:4 Եւ էին աւուրք ցրտաշունչ ձմերայնոյն, եւ նեղէր զնոսա Յոյնն. եւ նոքա ցրտոյն ոչ կարէին ելանել եւ տալ պատերազմ ընդ նոսա, այլ ելին յանկարծակի եւ գնացին անցին զգետովն, եւ չոգան ամրացան ի Զարեհաւանի: Իսկ Յոյնն իբրեւ ետես զայն՝ ոչ ինչ փոյթ արար վասն նոցա, այլ աւարեաց զբերդն Դըւնայ, եւ գնաց ի Նախճաւան, եւ մարտեաւ ընդ բերդին, զի աւարեսցէ զնա եւս: Եւ էր զաւրավար զաւրուն Յունաց Մաւրիանոս ոմն, զոր ասէին այր հաւատարիմ:	52:4 It was the days of piercing winter cold, and the Greeks were pressing hard on them. From the cold they could not come out to offer them battle, but unexpectedly crossed the river and went and fortified themselves in Zarehawan. When the Greeks saw that, they paid no attention to them, but sacked the fortress of Dvin and went on to Nakhchawan. They attacked the fortress in order to pillage it too. The general of the Greek army was a certain Mawrianos, who they said was a trustworthy man:
52:5 Արդ՝ ի հասանել ժամանակի գարնայնոյն՝ կազմեցաւ պատրաստեցաւ ի պատերազմ ընդ զաւրուն Իսմայելի: Եւ Մաւրիանոս յամառեալ՝ զիւրն խորհէր կատարել զգործ: Եւ արշաւեաց Տաճիկն ի վերայ Յունին, որ մարտ եդեալ կռուէին ընդ բերդին Նախճաւանի. եհար զնոսա եւ սատակեաց ի սուր սուսերի, եւ զմնացեալսն փախստական արարեալ:	52:5 Now when the springtime arrived, he made preparations for battle with the army of Ismael. Mawrianos obstinately planned to finish his own undertaking. The Arabs attacked the Greeks who were assaulting the fortress of Nakhchawan. They defeated them, slew them with the sword, and put the survivors to flight:
52:6 Եւ գնաց Մաւրիանոս փախստական, եւ չոգաւ անկաւ ի Վիրս: Իսկ զաւրն Իսմայելի դարձաւ ի նոցանէ եւ պաշարեաց զԿարնոյ քաղաք, եւ մարտ եդեալ կռուեցաւ ընդ նոսա. իսկ նոքա ոչ կարացին զդէմ ունել նոցա պատերազմաւ, բացին զդուրս քաղաքին, եւ հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն:	52:6 Mawrianos fled and took refuge in Iberia. Then the army of Ismael turned back from them, besieged the city of Karin, and attacked its (inhabitants). The latter, unable to offer military resistance, opened the gates of the city and submitted:
52:7 Եւ նոցա մտեալ ի քաղաքն ժողովեցին ոսկի եւ արծաթ եւ զամենայն բազմութիւն ընչից քաղաքին. եւ կողոպտեաց զամենայն երկիրն Հայոց, զԱղուանս, զՍիւնիս, եւ մերկացոյց զամենայն եկեղեցիս: Եւ կալաւ պատանդ զգլխաւոր իշխանս աշխարհին եւ զկանայս եւ զուստերս եւ զդստերս բազմաց:	52:7 Having entered the city, they collected gold and silver and all the large amount of the city’s wealth. They ravaged all the land of Armenia, Ałuank’, and Siwnik’, and stripped all the churches. They seized as hostages the leading princes of the country, and the wives, sons, and daughters of many people:
52:8 Եւ Թէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէրն համազգեաւքն իւրովք գնաց ընդ նոսա. եւ տարեալ իջուցին զնոսա յԱսորեստան: Անդ մեռաւ Թէոդորոս Ռշտունեաց տէրն, եւ մարմին նորա բերաւ ի գաւառ իւր, եւ թաղեցաւ ի գերեզմանի հարց իւրոց:	52:8 T’ēodoros, lord of Ṙshtunik’, with his relatives, departed with them. They took them down to Asorestan. There T’ēodoros, lord of Ṙshtunik’, died. His body was brought to his own province and buried in the tomb of his fathers:
52:9 Եւ ունէր զիշխանութիւն Հայոց աշխարհիս Համազասպ Մամիկոնէից տէրն, որդի Դաւթի, այր առաքինի յամենայն դէմս: Բայց ընդանեսուն եւ ընթերցասէր եւ ուսումնասէր, եւ ոչ ըստ հայրենի ազգին վարժ եւ կիրթ հրահանգաւք զինուորական վարժից, ոչ մտեալ ի ճակատ եւ ոչ տեսեալ զդէմս թշնամեաց:	52:9 Hamazasp, lord of the Mamikoneank’, son of Dawit’, held the position of prince of Armenia, a virtuous man in all respects. He was a domesticated man, a lover of reading and study. But he was not trained and experienced in the details of military skill in the fashion of his ancestral family; he had not engaged in combat or seen the faces of the enemy:
52:10 Եւ արդ՝ սկսաւ նախանձել ի բնութիւն հայրենի տանն քաջութեանն, ջերմեռանդ փութով կատարել եւ զգործ քաջութեան ըստ նախնեացն վարժից լիապէս կատարել, ի վերուստ խնդրելով զառաջնորդութիւն եւ զյաջողութիւն անձին քաջութեանն կատարել:	52:10 So, he began to be zealous for the valiant character of his ancestral house, to carry out with fervent haste acts of bravery in accordance with the abilities of his ancestors, seeking from On High leadership and success for his own valour:
52:11 Իսկ կաթուղիկոսն Հայոց Ներսէս գնաց ընդ թագաւորին, որպէս վերագոյն ասացի, եւ չուեաց ընդ նմա ի Կոստանդնուպաւլիս: Եւ ընկալաւ զնա անդ պատուով. եւ ետուն նմա ինչս եւ արձակեցին անդրէն ի տեղի իւր, եւ եկն դադարեաց ի Տայս մինչեւ մեռաւ Ռշտունեաց տէրն, դադարեաց ասպատակ Տաճկին. եւ ապա յետ վեցերորդի ամի հալածանացն դարձաւ անդրէն ի տեղիս իւր. եւ հաստատեցաւ յաթոռ կաթուղիկոսութեան. փութայր կատարել զշինուած եկեղեցւոյն, զոր շինեաց ի վերայ պողոտային Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի:	52:11 Then the Armenian Catholicos Nersēs departed with the king, as I said above, and went with him to Constantinople. He (Constans) received him with great honour; and they gave him gifts and sent him back to his own place. He came and stayed in Tayk’ until the lord of Ṙshtunik’ died and the Arab invasion had come to an end. Then after the sixth year of expulsion he returned to his position and was reestablished on the throne of the Catholicosate. He hastened to complete the building of the church which he had constructed on the road to the city of Vałarshapat:
52:12 Ի նմին ամի ի բաց կացին Հայք ի ծառայութենէ Իսմայելացւոցն, եւ հնազանդեցան անդրէն ի ծառայութիւն թագաւորին Յունաց: Եւ արար արքայ Կոստանդին զՄամիկոնէից տէր զՀամազասպ՝ կիւրապաղատ, եւ ետ նմա գահոյս արծաթիս եւ զիշխանութիւնն աշխարհին Հայոց, եւ պատիւս այլոց իշխանացն, եւ գանձս զաւրացն:	52:12 In the same year the Armenians abandoned their submission to the Ismaelites and turned their allegiance to the king of the Greeks. King Constans made Hamazasp, lord of the Mamikoneank’ curopalates, and gave him silver cushions and the rank of prince of Armenia. To the other princes (he gave) honours, and treasures to the soldiers:
52:13 Յայնժամ ետես արքայն Իսմայելի, եթէ ի բաց կացին Հայք ի ծառայութենէ նոցա, զամենայն զպատանդսն, զոր տարեալ էին յերկրէն, ոգիս իբրեւ [ՌՉՀԵ], սատակեցին զամենեսեան ի սուր սուսերի. եւ մնացորդքն սակաւք, թուով իբրեւ [ԻԲ], որք ոչ դիպեցան ի տեղւոյն, այն միայն ապրեցան:	52:13 Then when the king of Ismael saw that the Armenians had withdrawn from submission to them, they put to the sword all the hostages whom they had brought from that land, about [1,775] people. A few were left, in number about [22], who had not happened to be at that spot; they alone survived:
52:14 Իսկ Մուշեղ Մամիկոնէից տէր, վասն զի էին նորա չորս որդիք ի պատանդի առ Իսմայելացւոցն, վասն այնորիկ ոչ կարաց ի բաց կալ ի ծառայութենէ նոցա: Եւ էր Համազասպայ եղբայր մի ի պատանդի: Բայց զայն՝ եւ այլ եւս յիշխանացն հանդերձ կանամբք իւրեանց խնդրէին առ ինքեանս յԱսորիս:	52:14 But Musheł, lord of the Mamikoneank’, because he had four sons among the hostages with the Ismaelites, was therefore unable to withdraw from their service. And Hamazasp had a brother among the hostages. So (the Ismaelites) requested him and still others from among the princes (to go) to them in Syria with their wives:
52:15 Վասն այնորիկ լաւ համարեալ զմահ քան զկեանս՝ ի բաց կացին ի ծառայութենէ նոցա, եւ հապճեպ երթեւեկով հնազանդեցան ի ծառայութիւն թագաւորին Յունաց, հանդերձ միաբանութեամբ իշխանացն եւ զաւրացն Աղուանից եւ իշխանացն աշխարհին Սիւնեաց հանդերձ աշխարհաւն իւրեանց. որք լծեալ էին յառաջագոյն յաշխարհագիրն Ատրպատականի, մինչեւ բարձաւ թագաւորութիւնն Պարսից եւ տիրեաց Իսմայելացին, նոքա անդրէն նուաճեալ միաբանեցան ընդ Հայոց:	52:15 Therefore, reckoning death better than life, they withdrew from submission to them, and through precipitate negotiations submitted to the king of the Greeks in unison with the prince and the army of Ałuank’ and the princes of Siwnik’ with their country. These had previously been included in the census of Atrpatakan, until the kingdom of the Persians had been destroyed and the Ismaelites ruled. These were then subdued and included with Armenia:
52:16 Եւ ձերբակալ արարեալ զՄուշեղ եւ զայլ եւս յիշխանացն որ էին ընդ նմա: Արդ՝ զայլ իշխանսն, զորս ձերբակալ արարեալ էին՝ հրամայեաց թագաւորն թողուլ ի բաց, բայց զՄուշեղ առ ինքն խնդրեաց:	52:16 They took prisoner Musheł and others of the princes who were with him. The king ordered them to release the other princes those who had been made captive; but Musheł he requested (to be sent) to himself:
52:17 Արդ՝ առաքեաց Աստուած խռովութիւն ի մէջ բանակացն որդւոցն Իսմայելի, եւ պատառեցաւ միաբանութիւն նոցա, եւ խառնեցան ընդ միմեանս, եւ բաժանեցան ի չորս մասունս: Մասն մի այն՝ որ ի Հնդկաց կողմանէն. մասն մի այն՝ որ ունին զԱսորեստանն եւ զկողմանս հիւսիսոյ. մասն մի այն՝ որ յԵգիպտոս եւ ի կողմանս Թետալացւոց. մասն մի ի կողմանս Տաճկաց եւ յԱսկարաւն կոչեցեալ տեղւոջ:	52:17 Now God sent a disturbance amongst the armies of the sons of Ismael, and their unity was split. They fell into mutual conflict and divided into four sections. One part (was composed of) those in the direction of India; one part, those who occupied Asorestan and the north; one part, those in Egypt and in the regions of the T’etalk’; one part in the territory of the Arabs and the place called Askarawn:
52:18 Եւ սկսան կռուել ընդ իրեարս, եւ անհուն կոտորածով զմիմեանս սատակէին: Արդ՝ միաբանեալ այն որ յԵգիպտոս եւ որ ի կողմանս Տաճկաց՝ սպանին զթագաւորն իւրեանց, եւ աւար հարին զբազմութիւն գանձուցն, եւ այլ թագաւոր նստուցին: Եւ ինքեանք գնացին յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս:	52:18 They began to fight with each other and to kill each other with enormous slaughter. The army in Egypt and that in the area of the Arabs united; they killed their king, plundered the multitude of treasures, and installed another king. Then they went to their respective areas:
52:19 Իսկ այն իշխանն որ ի կողմանս Ասորեստանի էր, Մաւիաս անուն իշխան նոցա, որ էր երկրորդ թագաւորին իւրեանց, իբրեւ ետես զեղեալսն՝ միաբանեալ զզաւրս իւր, գնաց եւ նա յանապատն եւ սպան զայն եւս արքայ, զոր նոքայն նստուցեալ էին, եւ ետ մարտ ընդ զաւրացն որ ի Տաճկաց կողմանէ, եւ եհար զնոսա կոտորմամբ մեծաւ: Եւ դարձաւ անդրէն յաղթութեամբ յԱսորեստան:	52:19 That prince who was in the region of Asorestan, their prince called Muawiya, was the second after their king. When he saw what had occurred, he brought together his troops, went himself as well into the desert, slew that other king whom they had installed, waged war with the army in the region of the Arabs, and inflicted great slaughter on them. He returned very victoriously to Asorestan:
52:20 Իսկ այն զաւրն որ յԵգիպտոս, միաբանեալ ընդ թագաւորին Յունաց, եւ արար հաշտութիւն, եւ միաւորեցաւ: Եւ բազմութիւն զաւրաց իբրեւ հնգետասան հազարաց հաւատացին ի Քրիստոս եւ մկրտեցան: Եւ սաստկացաւ արիւն կոտորածին անհուն բազմութեանց ի մէջ բանակացն Իսմայելի. եւ գործ պատերազմին տագնապէր զնոսա՝ զմիմեանս սատակելով:	52:20 But the army which was in Egypt united with the king of the Greeks, made a treaty, and joined him. The host of troops, about [15,000], believed in Christ and were baptized. The blood of the slaughter of immense multitudes flowed thickly among the armies of Ismael. Warfare afflicted them as they engaged in mutual carnage:
52:21 Եւ ոչ կարէին դադարել փոքր մի ի սրոյն եւ ի գերութենէն եւ ի սաստիկ պատերազմացն՝ որ ի ծովու եւ ի ցամաքի, մինչեւ զաւրացաւ Մաւիաս եւ յաղթեաց ամենեցուն: Եւ հնազանդեցուցեալ ընդ ինքեամբ՝ եւ թագաւորէ ի վերայ կալուածոց որդւոցն Իսմայելի, եւ առնէ խաղաղութիւն ընդ ամենեսին:	52:21 They were unable to refrain for the least moment from the sword and captivity and fierce battles by sea and by land, until Muawiya prevailed and conquered. Having brought them into submission to himself, he rules over the possessions of the sons of Ismael and makes peace with all:
52:22 Արդ՝ թէպէտ եւ վայրապար զրուցեալ տողեցից զբանս ի կարգի պատմութեանս ըստ անհանճար խորհրդոյ մտացս իմոց, եւ ոչ ըստ արժանաւոր շնորհի գիտութեան. այլ սակայն անդր հայեցեալ ի կարգս ուսումնասիրացն, եւ հաստատեցից մարգարէական բարբառովն, որ ըստ հրամանի Տեառն խաւսեցեալ:	52:22 Now although in my insignificant tale I may have arranged the details of this history in accordance with the unintelligent thought of my own mind, and not in accordance with the worthy grace of knowledge, nonetheless, looking to the ranks of those who love study I shall confirm (my account) through the prophetic statement spoken at the Lord’s command:
52:23 Զի թէ եւ յառաջինս կանխաւ կատարեալ՝ այլ սակայն եւ ի վերջինսս մինչեւ յաւիտեան կատարեսցի ըստ բանին Տեառն որ ասէ. «Երկինք եւ երկիր անցցեն՝ եւ բանք իմ մի անցցեն»: «Զի հուր բորբոքեսցի, ասէ, ի բարկութենէ իմմէ, այրեսցէ եւ իջցէ մինչեւ ի դժոխս ներքինս:	52:23 For even if it was fulfilled earlier in those first (times), yet also in these later (times) down to eternity it will be fulfilled according to the Lord’s word: ’Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass. ’ ’For fire will flame up, ’ he says, ’from my anger; it will burn down and descend to the lowest hell. ’:
52:24 Եւ զի զնոցանէն ասէ՝ յայտ է, զի ասէ, եթէ «Վառեսցին հրով, բորբոքեսցին հիմունք լերանց նոցա», այսինքն զմեծամեծ իշխանացն զբռնութիւնսն: Եւ թէ՝ «Կուտեցից չարիս ամենայն ի վերայ նոցա, եւ նետիւք իմովք սպառեցից զնոսա»: Զի որպէս նետք թռուցեալք ի գրկաց առն կորովոյ ի լայնալիճ աղեղանէ ի նպատակ՝ այսպէս եւ սոքա ի Սին անապատէ որ ի վերայ ամենայն երկրի կատարեալ սովով եւ սրով եւ ահիւ մեծաւ:	52:24 That he speaks about them is clear, because he says: ’They will be consumed by fire; the foundations of their mountains will burst into flames, ’ that is, the tyrannies of their great princes. And: ’I shall heap all evils upon them, and with my arrows I shall exterminate them. ’ For just as arrows fly from the breast of a powerful man, from a fully-extended bow to the target, so too did these (speed) from the desert of Sin, who over the whole earth exterminated through famine and sword and great fear:
52:25 Եւ զի ի կողմանս անապատին բորբոքեցաւ հուր՝ այսպէս յայտնապէս ցուցանէ այնու զի ասէ. «Լարս առանց բժշկութեան արձակեսցես ի վերայ նոցա, զգազանս անապատի, որք այսր եւ անդր քարշեսցեն զնոսա ընդ երկիր»: Զորմէ գոչէ մարգարէն Դանիէլ, եթէ «Գազանն չորրորդ ահեղ եւ զարմանալի, եւ հզաւր յոյժ. ժանիք նորա երկաթիք, եւ մագիլք նորա պղնձիք. ուտէր եւ մանրէր, եւ զմնացեալսն առ ոտն կոտորէր» եւ զայլն:	52:25 He clearly indicates that the fire was kindled in the desert, by saying: ’You shall send nooses upon them, the wild beasts of the desert, who will drag them hither and thither across the earth. ’ Concerning this the prophet Daniel cried out: ’The fourth wild beast, fearsome and astonishing and very powerful; its teeth are iron and its claws bronze. It ate and tore in pieces, and the remnants it trampled underfoot, ’ and so on:
52:26 Եւ ապա յելս բանիցն ասէ. «Մերձ է աւր կորստեան նոցա, հասեալ է պատրաստութեամբ Տէր ի վերայ նոցա»: Որ եւ այս եւս կատարեսցի ի ժամանակի իւրում:	52:26 Then at the end of his account he says: ’The day of their destruction is close; the Lord has arrived upon them in readiness. ’ And that too will be fulfilled in its own time:
