69:0 Եւ լուեալ, թէ առ վաղիւ գունդն Պարսից գայ ի վերայ նոցա ի պատերազմ` կանխեցին ըստ սովորութեան աւուրցն ի պաշտաւն գիշերոյն. եւ կատարեալ զաղաւթս առաւաւտուն` կազմէին եւ նոքա որ անդ էին` ընդդէմ նոցա ի պատերազմ:

 69:0 When they heard that the Iranian brigade was coming against them in war the next day, in accordance with their daily custom, they hastened to conduct the evening service. In the morning, after completing their prayers, those who were there organized themselves to resist them in war:

69:1 Եւ բաժանեալ զչորեք հարիւրսն ի չորս առաջս` միջին վայրին կարգէին զաւրագլուխս ի ժամուն զիշխանն Սիւնեաց Բաբգէն եւ զքաջ սեպուհն Մամիկոնէից Վասակ, եւ ահեակ կողմանն զԳարջոյլն Մաղխազ, եւ կողմանն աջոյ զԳնունիսն երկոսին, զիշխանն Գնունեաց Ատոմ եւ զնորուն զեղբայրն զԱռաստոմ. եւ ընդ մէջ երկոցունց մասանցն զքաջն եւ զընտիրն զիշխանն Շիրակայ զՆերսեհն Կամսարական եւ զնորուն եղբայրն զՀրահատն պատրաստական յաւրինէին:

 69:1 The [400] men were divided into four fronts. At that time Babgen Siwnik’ and the brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Vasak, were set up as military commanders of the center. Garjoyl Maghxaz was designated commander of the left-wing, the two Gnunik’s, Atom, prince of the Gnunik’, and his brother, Arhastom, (were designated commanders) of the right-wing; between the two parts the brave and select prince of Shirak, Nerseh Kamsarakan, and his brother, Hrahat, stood ready:

69:2 Զի ո՛ր կողմն տկարասցի` ասեն, նոցա հասեալ փութով զաւրացուցեալ աւգնեսցեն, եւ յամենայն կողմանց ոյժ լինիցին. քանզի ամենեքեան վստահ էին ի յարսն` որպէս ի լաւս եւ յարդարս եւ յուխտապահս:

 69:2 they said, to quickly go to the aid of whichever side was weakening, and to provide force to all sides. All were certain that these men were good, just, and oath-keeping people:

69:3 Եւ այսպէս յաւրինեալ զչորեք հարիւր արսն, եւ տուեալ փառս Աստուծոյ` աղաղակէին միաբան ասելով. Աւգնեա՛ մեզ, Աստուած փրկիչ մեր, վասն փառաց անուան քո. մի՛ երբէք ասասցեն ի հեթանոսս, թէ ո՞ւր է Աստուած նոցա:

 69:3 With the [400] men so arranged, they glorified God and cried out together, saying: “Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of Your name. Let the pagans never say, ’where is their God? ’:

69:4 Եւ ելեալ կային ճակատեալք ի վերայ բարձրաւանդակի լանջակողմանցն յայտնաւորին:

 69:4 They then came forth and massed on a visible promontory of that part of the mountain between the summit and the middle:

69:5 Զորոց այնքան զսակաւութիւնն Հայոց տեսեալ զաւրացն Պարսից` ոչ ինչ այլ կարծեցին, բայց եթէ կամաւ խելացնորեալ ի խնդիր մահու են եկեալք:

 69:5 When the Iranian troops saw so few Armenians, they could not imagine anything except that (the Armenians) had gone crazy and had willingly come forth asking for death:

69:6 Եւ քաջ ի հեռաստանէ այրընտիր ի զաւրացն Պարսից յարձակեալք ի վերայ զաւրացն Հայոց` բազումք յետսէին վատաձիոցն Պարսից, եւ քաջաձիքն յառաջեալ հասանէին ի տեղի պատերազմին:

 69:6 From a distance, the brave select men of the Iranian troops attacked the Armenian troops; many of the ill-horsed Iranians fell back, and the well-horsed advanced to the site of the battle:

69:7 Յորս եւ ի ժամուն Մաղխազն Գարջոյլ, առեալ զիւրեւ զհարիւրսն, նենգեալ ուխտի Աւետարանին` ի գունդն Պարսից անկանէր. եւ մնային ջոկք ըստ հրամանին Աստուծոյ երեք հարիւրն Հայոց, ըստ ընտրութեան երեք հարիւրոցն ընդ Գէդէովնի:

 69:7 It was then that Garjoyl Maxaz took his hundred men, broke the oath (he had sworn) on the Gospel, and joined the Iranian brigade. There thus remained three hundred Armenians in the companies, in accordance with God’s command (for the selection of three hundred for Gideon:

69:8 Որք դիմեալք ի վերայ զաւրացն Պարսից, աւգնականութեամբ Բարձրելոյն յառաջեալ զընտիր ընտիր արս պատերազմին անդէն եւ անդ ի տեղւոջն դիաթաւալ յերկիր կործանէին. եւ զայլ բազմութիւն գնդին Պարսից ձորոց եւ առապար տեղեացն ցրուեալ վատնէին:

 69:8 With help from On High, (the Armenians) applied themselves against the Iranian troops and advancing, they caused the most select men to fall to the ground dead, then and there. Another multitude of the Iranian brigade was scattered and dispersed in the valleys and rocky places:

69:9 Անդ ի կողմանն քաջին Վասակայ սեպհին Մամիկոնէից եւ Սիւնւոյն Բաբգենայ անկեալ սատակէր Ատրվշնասպն մարզպանն եւ այլ արք աւագ եւ նախարարք յուրացողացն Հայոց եւ այլ բազում Պարսիկք. նոյնպէս եւ ի կողմանն Ատոմայ եւ Առաստոմայ բազումք մեռանէին ի քաջ արանց:

 69:9 It was there that the marzpan, Atrvshnasp, other Armenian apostate awags and naxarars, and many other Iranians were killed by the wing of brave Vasak, sepuh of the Mamikoneans, and Babgen Siwnik’. Many brave men were killed by Atom and Arhastom’s group, though through the justice of his enemy the lord of Siwnik’:

69:10 Որ եւ զտէրն Սիւնեաց զԳդիհոն պահելով միւսում եւս չար ժամու` զերծեալ ապրեցուցանէր թշնամին արդարութեան մազապուր ի ձեռացն Ատոմայ եւ Առաստոմայ:

 69:10 Gdihon managed to save himself for an even more wicked hour, and to barely escape from Atom and Arhastom:

69:11 Բայց նախ զյառաջեալ այր ի գնդէն Պարսից` Հրահատ որդի երանելւոյ Կամսարականին Արշաւրայ հարեալ նիզակաւ սատակէր:

 69:11 But it was Hrahat, son of the venerable Arshawir Kamsarakan, who killed with his spear the very first man to advance from the Iranian brigade:

69:12 Եւ մինչդեռ նոքա այսպէս քաջալերեալք աջով հզաւրին գործամխեալք էին` առեալ Գարջուլայն Մախազու զգունդն Կատշաց հանդերձ եւ այլ ապստամբաւք Հայ որերով եւ այնու եւս գնդաւ որ ընդ իւրն էին, եւ յայլ կողմն կարթեալ ըստ աներեւոյթ ձորոցն խորութեան` հասեալ կայր զկնի ուխտապահ զաւրացն Հայոց ի կողմանէ:

 69:12 While they were thus involved, encouraged by the right hand of the Almighty, Garjoyl Maxaz took the Katsac’ brigade, together with other rebellious Armenian folk, as well as the brigade which was with him, and, changing direction through the depths of concealed valleys, he came up behind the oath-keeping Armenian troops:

69:13 կարծեցեալ անմտադիւր զնոսա յայնմ պարապութենէ կոտորելոյ զթշնամիսն Աստուծոյ, կամէր ի թիկանց կուսէ անկանել ի վերայ զաւրացելոցն ի Քրիստոս, եւ տանել զյաղթութիւնն խաբէութեամբ եւ անուն մեծ ժառանգել:

 69:13 Thinking that (the Armenians) would be too occupied killing the enemies of God, (Garjoyl) wanted to come up from behind, fall upon those whom Christ was strengthening, vanquish them through duplicity, and inherit a great name:

69:14 Իսկ ուրումն յանկարծակի զձայն խողխողման զՀայ սպանանելոյ ի Կատշացն լուեալ` բողոք արկանէր առ արսն Կամսարականս. որոց ցասուցեալ առնն` կամէին սպանանել զնա, թէ գունդ մեր է, եւ դու խաբէութեամբ զմեծ իրս կորուսանես:

 69:14 But then, suddenly, someone heard the sound of an Armenian being killed by the Katsac’, and went to the Kamsarakans to protest. They were angry at the man and wanted to kill him, saying: “That brigade belongs to us, and you deceitfully would cause great damage:

69:15 Եւ ապա հաստատեալ Ներսեհի ի լրտեսելն եղբաւրն իւրոյ Հրահատայ, եթէ գունդն` թշնամեաց է` դիմեալ յարձակէին ի վերայ անչափ բազմութեան երկոքին եղբարքն սակաւ արամբք:

 69:15 But then through the spying of his brother, Hrahat, Nerseh ascertained that indeed the brigade belonged to the enemy. Then the two brothers, with but few men, attacked that limitless multitude:

69:16 Անդ հասեալ հայրանման Կամսարականն Ներսեհ` զզաւրագլուխն Կատշաց, զայր հզաւր եւ զմարտիկ, հարեալ նիզակաւ անդէն ի տեղւոջն սատակէր, եւ զայլ ամենայն գունդն արկեալ առաջի` բազում արանց դիակունս, առաւել քան զայլ մեռեալս պատերազմին` կործան յերկիր վարէին:

 69:16 Resembling his father, Nerseh Kamsarakan reached the Katsac’ military commander, a mighty and martial man, struck him with his spear and killed him there. Then herding the entire brigade before them, they made more men fall to the ground dead here than had died in the battle:

69:17 Եւ լինէր աւրն այն աւր նշանաւոր ուրախութեան հաւատացելոցն ի Քրիստոս, եւ աւր ամաւթոյ եւ կորանաց ամենայն ուրացելոցն ի Քրիստոսէ, եւ ճշմարտապէս կատարեալ հաստատէր բան մարգարէին որ ասէ, թէ Որոց Աստուած աւգնէ` մի զհազարս հալածէ, եւ երկուս զբիւրս շարժէ:

 69:17 That day was one of noteworthy joy for the believers in Christ, and of shame and destruction for all who had apostasized Christ. Truly the word of the prophet was fulfilled and confirmed, that “Whomever God aids can expel a thousand, and move two myriads:

69:18 Եւ տեսեալ այնպիսի փառաւորապէս վճարումն գործոյ թշնամւոյն արդարութեան սատանայի, եւ ի կոր կործանեալ, խորհեալ, թէ կարի անհնարին ամենայն ինչ ընդդէմ իմոց կամացս գործեցան, եւ արդ` յայլ ինչ չեղէ ձեռնհաս եւ նկուն գտայ` գոնէ առ վայր մի տրտմեցուցանեմ զսիրտս քաջացն, որք դեռ եւս ոչ գիտեն զանցս աղէտիցս իմոց եւ զկործանման:

 69:18 When the enemy of justice, Satan, saw that the affair had ended so gloriously (for the Christians), he sank into deep depression. He thought: “Everything has turned out incredibly contrary to my wishes. Though I proved incapable and was conquered, let me, at least for a moment, sadden the hearts of the braves who still do not know about the disasters and loss I have suffered:

69:19 Եւ գտեալ իւր արս երկուս արբանեկեալս, զմին ի տոհմէն Գնթունեաց, որում անուն էր Վառգոշ, եւ զմիւսն ի տոհմէն Սահառունեաց, որում անուն էր Վասակ. եւ եկեալ արքն երկոքեան ի վաղիւն ճեպով ընդ ծագել առաւաւտուն` գոյժ աղաղակի լսելի առնէին յականջս հայրապետին սրբոյ Յոհաննու եւ երկոցունց աւագ իշխանացն Հայոց, մարզպանին Սահակայ եւ Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի:

 69:19 He took two men who were his satellites—one named Varhgosh from the Gnt’unik’ tohm, the other named Vasak from the Saharhunik’ tohm—and quickly sent them the next day at dawn to bring this bad news to the ears of the blessed patriarch Yohann, and the two senior princes of Armenia, the marzpan Sahak and Vahan Mamikonean:

69:20 Խառնեցան, ասեն, սաստկապէս կողմանքն երկոքեան ի պատերազմ, - որոց բնաւ եւ տեսեալ չէր զգործ պատերազմին, - եւ զաւրացաւ կողմն Պարսից, եւ ի պարտութիւն մատնեցաւ գունդն Հայոց, ի փախուստ դարձան. եւ անկեալ զաւրաւորքն ի սուր թշնամեացն` մեռաւ քաջն Մամիկոնեան Վասակ եւ լաւ Սիւնին Բաբգէն եւ երկոքեան արքն անուանիք, տէրն Շիրակայ Ներսեհ, սիրելի եղբարբն իւրով հանդերձ Հրահատաւ:

 69:20 The two sides clashed violently in battle, the Iranian side grew strong, defeated the Armenian brigade and put them to flight. The soldiers who fell and died by the enemy’s sword were: the brave Vasak Mamikonean, the goodly Babgen Siwni, the two renowned men, Nerseh, lord of Shirak, together with his beloved brother, Hrahat:

69:21 Եւ արքն Գնունիք Ատոմ եւ Առաստոմ եւ այլ ամենայն զաւրքն Հայոց ի լանջակողմանս Ակոռայ տապաստ անկեալ դիակնացան. եւ մեք միայն մնացաք ի գուժկացն Յոբայ, եւ եկեալք պատմել ձեզ:

 69:21 the Gnunik’ men Atom and Arhastom, and indeed all the Armenian troops were killed on the side of the mountain where Akorhi is located. We are the only survivors who have come to bring you the bad tidings of Job:

69:22 Եւ չեւ եւս սփռեալ տարածանէր համբաւս այս ի Դուին, զի մի՛ շատագոյն ուրախասցի աղմկելով զքաղաքն չար դեւն` գայր հասանէր վաղվաղակի հրեշտակ աւետաւոր ի տոհմէն Գնունեաց, որում անուն էր Առաստոմ. ձայն բարձեալ գոչելով ասէր. «Յաղթեա՜ց զաւրութիւն սուրբ խաչին, եւ միշտ յաղթէ:

 69:22 This was said by two men who had not even participated in the battle. Before this news had spread to Duin (so that the wicked dew would not be further gladdened by disrupting the city), a messenger bearing glad tidings quickly arrived. His name was Arhastom, of the Gnunik’ tohm. Crying out in a loud voice he note: “The power of the holy Cross has triumphed, and always will triumph:

69:23 Տայր զրոյց եւ զսքանչելիսն Աստուծոյ, զոր արար սրբոցն բարեխաւսութեամբ առ իւր սիրելիսն, եւ զչարաչար բեկումն եւ զամաւթն, զոր գտեալ ժառանգեցին փաղանգ ուրացողացն:

 69:23 He gave his account and related the miracles of God which happened to God’s beloved ones through the intercession of the saints, as well as the wicked destruction and shame which the phalanx of apostates inherited:

69:24 Եւ լուեալ զայս ձայն աւետեաց հայրապետին Հայոց Յոհաննու եւ աւագ իշխանացն, մարզպանին Սահակայ եւ սպարապետին Հայոց Վահանայ, եւ ամենայն նախարարացն Հայոց եւ ռամկացն` դիմեալք միաբանութեամբ ի տունն Աստուծոյ, որոյ հզաւր է զաւրութիւն իւր` գոհանային, երկիր պագանէին միայնոյ ճշմարտին Աստուծոյ եւ անընդդիմակայ հրամանի կամաց իւրոց:

 69:24 Hearing this good news, the patriarch of Armenia, Yohan, and the senior princes, the marzpan, Sahak, and the sparapet of Armenia, Vahan, as well as all the naxarars of Armenia and the rhamiks went together to the House of God (Whose strength is mighty) and they thanked Him, worshipping the sole true God and the irresistible order of His will:

69:25 Եւ երանելի կաթողիկոսն Հայոց Յոհան տայր սաղմոսել ի սաղմոսէն քսաներորդէ իններորդէ. Լուաւ ինձ տէր եւ ողորմեցաւ, եւ տէր եղեւ ինձ աւգնական:

 69:25 The venerable Yohan, kat’oghikos of Armenia had (a passage read) from the twenty-ninth psalm: “The Lord heard and pitied me, and the Lord aided me:

69:26 Դարձոյց զսուգ իմ յուրախութիւն. զերծ յինէն զքուրձ, եւ ինձ զգեցոյց զուրախութիւն:

 69:26 He turned my mourning into gladness. He took my sackcloth from me and girded me with gladness:

69:27 Որպէս սաղմոս ասասցեն քեզ փառք իմ, եւ այլ մի՛ եւս զղջացայց, տէր Աստուած իմ, յաւիտեան խոստովան եղէց քեզ:

 69:27 As the psalms say, You are my glory, and I shall regret no more. Lord my God, I will confess You forever:

69:28 Եւ կատարեալ զպաշտաւնն` զատիկ ուրախութեան առնէին. նախ հոգալով զաղքատացն յագումն նկատէին, եւ ապա ինքեանք ուրախանային ցնծալից ուրախութեամբ:

 69:28 Completing the mass, they had an Easter of joy. First, they saw to the wants of the poor, and after that they themselves rejoiced with delight:

69:29 Եկեալ հասանէին եւ զաւրքն ի պատերազմէն, պատմելով զնորոգ Աստուծոյ զաւրութեանն յաղթութիւն, շնորհեալ նոցա զմեծ յաղթութեանն անուն, եւ զթշնամեացն տալ զխորտակման եւ զամաւթոյ զվիճակն. եւ փառաւորելով զՔրիստոս` համբուրէին զմիմեանս ողջունիւ ուրախութեան, եւ անհոգ խաղաղութեան ի հանգիստ ձմերանւոյն մտանէին. հոգային առ գարունն զպատրաստութիւն պատերազմին:

 69:29 Then the troops came from battle and again related the victory of God’s power which had favored them with the name of great triumph, while giving the enemy a status of dissolution and disgrace. Glorifying Christ, they kissed each other with a greeting of joy, and entered the winter season in untroubled peace and rest. They were concerned about preparations for war in the springtime:
