20:1 Արդ՝ աւուրս վեց ի խոր տխրութեան եւ յանհնարին տրտմութեան կացեալ թագաւորն առ անձուկ սիրոյ գեղոյն Հռիփսիմեայ. ապա յետ այսորիկ ժամ տուեալ որսոյ՝ ամենայն զաւրաց ածել կուտել զպառականն, խուճապական սփռեալ, երագազ տուեալ, թակարդ ձգեալ, կամեցեալ որս առնել, երթեալ ի դաշտն Փառական Շեմակաց:	20:1 For six days the king remained in deep sorrow and profound sadness due to his passionate love for the beautiful Rhipsime. Afterwards he decided to go hunting. He had all his troops gather the hounds, he distributed the beaters, the nets and traps were put in place, and then he went to hunt in the plain of Parakan Shemak:
20:2 Այն ինչ ի կառս ելեալ կամէր թագաւորն ըստ քաղաքն ելանել՝ անդէն վաղվաղակի պատուհաս ի Տեառնէ ի վերայ հասանէր. եւ հարեալ զթագաւորն այսոյն պղծութեան՝ ի կառացն ի վայր կործանէր:	20:2 However, when the king had mounted his cart and wanted to leave the city, suddenly punishment from the Lord fell upon him. An unclean spirit attacked the king and threw him out of the cart:
20:3 Եւ անդէն մոլեգնել սկսաւ, եւ իւրովի ուտել զիւր մարմինն. նա եւ ըստ նմանութեանն Նաբուգոդոնոսորայ արքային Բաբելացւոց, ելեալ ըստ մարդկային բնութիւնս արտաքս՝ ի նմանութիւն վայրենի խոզաց, իբրեւ զնոսա ընդ նոսա ի մէջ նոցա երթեալ բնակէր:	20:3 Then the king began to go crazy and to eat his own flesh. Just like Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians, his human exterior was transformed to resemble a wild pig and, like one of them, he went and dwelled with them:
20:4 Եւ այնուհետեւ մտեալ յեղէգն, խոտաճարակ լեալ անհնարին անզգայութեամբ, մերկ զանձն ընդ դաշտսն կոծելով:	20:4 He went into the reeds and ate reeds in full senselessness, wallowing naked on the plain:
20:5 Զի թէպէտ կամեցան արգելուլ անդէն ի քաղաքին՝ ոչ կարացին. մի՝ վասն բնական ուժոյն, եւ մի՝ վասն զի էր եւ ոյժն դիւաց որ ի նմայն հարեալ էին:	20:5 Although his retinue wanted to stop him and take him back into the city, they could not. This was for two reasons: one, because of Trdat’s natural strength, and two, because of the power of the demons who had taken him over:
20:6 Նա եւ ամենայն մարդիկն որ ի քաղաքին էին՝ նոյն աւրինակ դիւաբախք մոլեգնէին. եւ անհնարին կործանումն ի վերայ աշխարհին հասանէր:	20:6 Moreover, all the people in the city, similarly, had gone crazy through demonic possession. An incredible disaster settled over the land:
20:7 Եւ ամենայն ընտանիք թագաւորին, ծառայք եւ սպասաւորք առ հասարակ, հարուածովք հարեալք լինէին. եւ անհնարին սուգ վասն հարուածոցն լինէր:	20:7 Almost all in the king’s household, including slaves and servants, were struck with torments and there was deep mourning because of it:
20:8 Յայնմ ժամանակի տեսիլ երեւեալ յԱստուծոյ ի վերայ քեռ թագաւորին, որոյ անուն էր Խոսրովիդուխտ:	20:8 Then it came about that a vision from God was visited upon the king’s sister, whose name was Xosroviduxt:
20:9 Արդ՝ եկեալ խաւսէր ընդ մարդկանն, պատմէր զտեսիլն եւ ասէր. «Տեսիլ երեւեցաւ ինձ յայսմ գիշերի. այր մի ի նմանութիւն լուսոյ եկեալ՝ պատմեաց ինձ, եթէ «Ոչ այլ ինչ գոյ բժշկութիւն հարուածոցդ, որ եկին հասին ի վերայ ձեր՝ եթէ ոչ յղեսջիք դուք ի քաղաքն յԱրտաշատ, ածել անտի զկապեալն Գրիգորիոս. նա եկեալ ուսուսցէ ձեզ դեղ ցաւոցդ բժշկութեան:	20:9 Afterwards she came and spoke to people, describing the vision and saying: “A vision appeared to me this evening. A man in the form of light came and told me that ’Nothing will cure the injuries which have come upon you unless you send to the city of Artashat and bring from there the prisoner Grigoris. He will come and teach you how to cure your ills’:
20:10 Արդ՝ իբրեւ լուան մարդիկն՝ սկսան ծիծաղել զբանիւքն զոր ասաց. սկսան խաւսել ընդ նմա եւ ասեն. «Եւ դո՛ւ ուրեմն մոլեգնեցար. դեւ ուրեմն հարաւ ի քեզ:	20:10 Now as soon as people heard this, they began to laugh at her words. Then they commenced talking with her, saying: “Then you, too, have gone crazy. Some demon has afflicted you:
20:11 Զիա՞րդ է, զի այս հնգետասան ամ է, զի ընկեցին զնա յանհնարին խոր վիրապն, եւ դու ասես եթէ կենդանի է. արդ եւ ոսկերոտին իսկ ո՞ւր իցեն. զի նոյն աւրին, իբրեւ իջուցին զնա անդր՝ յաւձիցն իսկ տեսլենէն նոյնժամայն սատակեալ իցէ:	20:11 How could it be as you describe since it has been these fifteen years since Gregory was thrown into the incredibly deep pit. And you are saying that he still lives. Where would even his bones be found? For on the same day that they lowered him down into the pit he would have perished merely from the sight of the snakes:
20:12 Իսկ կրկնեաց դարձեալ եւս կնոջն զնոյն տեսիլ, եւ հնգկնեաց սպառնալեաւք, զի եթէ ոչ պատմեսցէ ստէպ ստէպ՝ մեծամեծ տանջանս ընկալցի, եւ հարուածք մարդկան եւ թագաւորին եւս քան զեւս սաստկասցին մահու եւ պէսպէս տանջանաւք:	20:12 Yet the same vision came to the woman again - it was repeated five more times - with threats that if she did not reveal this, she would experience great torments, while the injuries suffered by people and by the king would increase even more with various torments and death:
20:13 Եւ մտեալ անդրէն Խոսրովիդուխտն՝ մեծաւ երկիւղիւ եւ զգուշութեամբ ասաց զբանսն հրեշտակին:	20:13 Then Xosroviduxt went back with great fear and concern, and revealed the angel’s words:
20:14 Իսկ նոքա վաղվաղակի յղէին անդր նախարար զոմն աւագ, որոյ անուն Աւտայ կոչէր:	20:14 Then they quickly sent there a certain senior [naxarar] lord whose name was Otay:
20:15 Եւ գնաց նա ի քաղաքն Արտաշատ՝ հանել զնա ի խոր բանդէ վիրապին:	20:15 The latter went to the city of Artashat to remove Gregory from the prison of the deep pit:
20:16 Արդ՝ իբրեւ եկն եհաս Աւտայն ի քաղաքն յԱրտաշատ՝ ընդ առաջ ելանէին նմա քաղաքացիքն՝ հարցանել զպատճառս գալոյն:	20:16 Now as soon as Otay had reached the city of Artashat, the citizens came before him to ask the cause of his arrival:
20:17 Եւ նա ասէ ցնոսա, թէ «Վասն կապելոյն Գրիգորի եկեալ եմ, տանել զնա:	20:17 He told them: “I have come to take the prisoner Gregory:
20:18 Իսկ նոքա զարմացեալ առ հասարակ ասէին. «Ո՞ գիտէ թէ կայցէ. զի բազում ամք են, զի ընկեցին զնա անդր:	20:18 Now they were astonished and all replied: “Who knows if he is still alive, for many years have passed since they lowered him down there:
20:19 Իսկ նա պատմեաց զիրս տեսլեանն եւ զգործն զինչ եղեւն իսկ:	20:19 However Otay related the details of the vision and what had happened:
20:20 Եւ եկին բերին կարս պարանաց երկայնս եւ ստուարս, եւ կցեցին իջուցին ի ներքս:	20:20 Then they brought long and thick ropes which they tied together and lowered down:
20:21 Աղաղակեաց Աւտայ նախարարն ի ձայն մեծ եւ ասէ. «Գրիգորիոս, եթէ կայցես ուրեք՝ ե՛կ ի դուրս. զի Տէր Աստուածն քո, զոր պաշտէիրն դու՝ նա հրամայեաց հանել զքեզ այտի:	20:21 The naxarar Otay shouted in a loud voice, calling out: “Gregorios, if you are alive somewhere there, come forth, for that god of yours whom you worship, has commanded that you be removed from there:
20:22 Եւ անդէն յոտն կացեալ՝ վաղվաղակի շարժեաց զպարանն, եւ բուռն հարեալ ունէր:	20:22 Then Gregory rose to his feet, moved the rope, and grabbed hold of it:
20:23 Իսկ սոցա գիտացեալ՝ ձգեալ հանին զնա ի վեր, եւ տեսին զի թխացեալ էր մարմին նորա իբրեւ զածուխ սեւացեալ. եւ անդէն հանդերձս մատուցեալ զգեցուցին նմա, եւ խնդութեամբ առին գնացին յԱրտաշատ քաղաքէ, տանել ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաք:	20:23 When they felt this, they pulled him up. They saw that his body had darkened and was black as coal. Then they brought forth clothing and dressed him and delightedly took him from the city of Artashat and went to the city of Vagharshapat:
20:24 Յայնմ ժամանակի առ վտանգի տարակուսի ցաւոցն՝ ելեալ թագաւորն յերամէ խոզիցն՝ դիւին առեալ ածէր ընդ առաջ նորա մերկ խայտառակ:	20:24 At that point the king, wracked with pain, emerged from the herd of pigs naked and disgraced and, led by the demon, came before Gregory:
20:25 Եւ նախարարքն արտաքոյ քաղաքին սպասէին նոցա:	20:25 The naxarars waited for them outside the city:
20:26 Արդ՝ իբրեւ տեսանէին զնոսա ի բացէ, զի գային Գրիգորիոս Աւտայիւն հանդերձ, եւ այլ բազում մարդիկ, որ գային ընդ նոսա յԱրտաշատ քաղաքէ՝ ընդ առաջ խաղացեալ, մոլեգնելով եւ ուտելով զմարմինս իւրեանց՝ դիւահարէին եւ փրփրէին առաջի նորա:	20:26 Now as soon as they saw from a distance that Gregory was coming with Otay and many other people from the city of Artashat, the lords rushed forward, frenzied and eating their own flesh, infested with demons and foaming at the mouth:
20:27 Իսկ նա վաղվաղակի ծունր եդեալ յաղաւթս կայր, եւ նոքա անդրէն ի զգաստութիւն դառնային:	20:27 Then Gregory immediately kneeled and prayed and the lords returned to their senses:
20:28 Եւ նա անդէն հրամայեաց, զի արկցեն զանձամբք իւրեանց հանդերձս եւ ծածկեսցեն զամաւթ իւրեանց:	20:28 Gregory ordered that they cover their bodies with clothing and hide their shame:
20:29 Եւ մատուցեալ թագաւորն եւ նախարարքն՝ բուռն հարեալ ունէին զոտից սրբոյն Գրիգորի եւ ասէին. «Խնդրեմք ի քէն, թո՛ղ մեզ զյանցումն մեր, զոր մեք ընդ քեզ արարաք:	20:29 The king and the naxarars came forward and took hold of the blessed Gregory’s feet, saying: “We beg you to forgive the crime which we committed against you:
20:30 Իսկ նա մատուցեալ կանգնեաց զնոսա ի գետնոյ անտի եւ ասէ. «Ես մարդ եմ իբրեւ զձեզ, եւ մարմին ունիմ իբրեւ զձերդ. բայց դուք ծաներո՛ւք զձեր արարիչն, որոյ զերկինս եւ զերկիր արարեալ է, զարեգակն եւ զլուսին եւ զաստեղս, զծով եւ զցամաք. եւ նա կարող է զձեզ բժշկել:	20:30 Then he came forward and raised them from the ground, saying: “I am a man like you, and have a body like yours. But you must recognize your creator who created the heavens and the earth, the moon and stars, the sea and the land. He is able to heal you:
20:31 Իսկ անդէն սկսաւ հարցանել Գրիգորիոս, թէ ո՛ւր եդեալ են մարմինք վկայիցն Աստուծոյ:	20:31 Then Gregory began to make inquiries, asking where they had put the bodies of the martyrs of God:
20:32 Իսկ նոքա ասեն, թէ «Զորո՞ց վկայից ասես:	20:32 They asked: “Which martyrs do you mean:
20:33 Եւ նա ասէ. «Որ վասն Աստուծոյն մեռան ի ձէնջ:	20:33 Gregory replied: “The ones who, for God, died by your hands:
20:34 Իսկ նոցա ցուցեալ նմա զտեղիսն:	20:34 Then they showed him the places:
20:35 Իսկ նա ընթացեալ ժողովել եւ ամփոփել զմարմինս նոցա ի սպանման տեղեացն, զի կային անդէն:	20:35 Gregory hastened to gather and assemble the bodies from the places where they had been killed, for they were still there:
20:36 Եւ տեսին զի զաւրութեանն Աստուծոյ պահեալ էր զմարմինս նոցա. զի այն ինն տիւ էր եւ ինն գիշեր, զի արտաքոյ ընկեցեալ կային մարմինք նոցա, զի ոչ գազանի էր մատուցեալ եւ ոչ շան, քանզի անդէն շուրջ զքաղաքաւն էին, մաւտ ի քաղաքն. եւ ոչ հաւու վնասեալ եւս էր նոցա, եւ ոչ հոտեալ էին մարմինք նոցա:	20:36 And they saw that their bodies had been preserved through the power of God. For nine days and nine nights had passed since their bodies had been lying there out in the open and yet no wild beast, no dogs - which were present there outside and near the city - had approached, no bird had damaged them. And their bodies did not smell:
20:37 Իսկ նոքա բերին հանդերձս սուրբս պատանաց. բայց երանելին Գրիգորիոս ոչ արժանի համարէր զպատանսն բերեալս թագաւորին, կամ զայլոց մարդկանն. այլ իւրաքանչիւր պատառոտուն հանդերձիւն պատէր զսուրբսն. «Առ անգամ մի, ասէ, մինչեւ լիջիք դուք արժանի պատել զմարմինս նոցա:	20:37 They brought fine garments to cover them. However, the blessed Gregory did not deem worthy the shrouds that the king or the other people had brought. Instead, each saint was wrapped in the saint’s own torn clothing. He note: “For now let these be the shrouds until you are worthy to wrap their bodies:
20:38 Եւ ամփոփեաց, առ գնաց ի հնձանն, ուր վանքն իսկ լեալ էին նոցա. եւ իւր իսկ վանս անդէն կալեալ՝ աւթեվանս առնէր:	20:38 And so Gregory wrapped them in these shrouds and went to the wine press which had been their dwelling, and made it his own residence:
20:39 Եւ երանելին Գրիգորիոս զցայգն ամենայն առ Աստուած աղաւթս մատուցանէր նոցա փրկութեան, եւ խնդրուածս առնէր, զի դարձցին եւ ապաշխարութեան հնարս գտանել մարթասցեն:	20:39 The blessed Gregory offered prayers to God the entire night for their salvation and begged that they might be converted and find a way to repentance:
20:40 Եւ ի վաղիւ անդր թագաւորն եւ նախարարքն եւ մեծամեծ աւագանին խառնաղանճ ամբոխիւն բազմութեամբ եկեալ ի ծունր իջեալ առաջի սրբոյն Գրիգորի եւ առաջի սուրբ ոսկերաց վկայիցն Աստուծոյ՝ խնդրէին եւ ասէին. «Թո՛ղ մեզ զամենայն յանցումն չարեացն, զոր մեք ընդ քեզ արարաք. եւ խնդրեա՛ դու վասն մեր յԱստուծոյ քումմէ, զի մի՛ կորիցուք:	20:40 Early the next day the king, the [naxarars] lords, and the grandee nobility together with a great mob of people, came and knelt before saint Gregory and before the holy bones of God’s martyrs and note: “Forgive us all our evil crimes which we perpetrated on you, and beseech God on our behalf so that we will not be lost:
