Muawiya comes to Chalcedon. A tempest destroys and scatters the fleet of the Ismaelites; the Ismaelite army abandons Chalcedon. Another army of Ismaelites, which invades Iberia, is repelled by a winter storm. The princes of Armenia unite and divide Armenia among themselves. Distress of the people:
50:1 Եթէ կամիս, ասէ, խաղաղութեամբ ունել զկեանս քոյ՝ ի բաց կաց յընդունայն պաշտամանէդ յայդմանէ, զոր ուսեալդ ես ի մանկութենէ: Ուրացիր զՅիսուսն զայն եւ դարձիր առ Աստուածն մեծ, զոր եսն պաշտեմ, զԱստուած հաւր մերում Աբրահամու:	50:1 ’If you wish, he said, to preserve your life in safety, abandon that vain cult which you learned from childhood. Deny that Jesus and turn to the great God whom I worship, the God of our father Abraham:
50:2 Եւ զբազմութիւն զաւրաց քոց արձակեա ի քէն յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս: Եւ ես արարից զքեզ իշխան մեծ ի կողմանսդ յայդոսիկ, եւ արձակեմ ի քաղաքդ ոստիկանս, եւ քննեմ զամենայն գանձս եւ հրամայեմ բաժանել ի չորս մասունս. երեքն՝ ինձ եւ մի՝ քեզ: Եւ տամ քեզ զաւրս որչափ եւ կամիցիս, եւ առնում ի քէն սակ՝ որչափ եւ դու կարես տալ:	50:2 Dismiss from your presence the multitude of your troops to their respective lands. And I shall make you a great prince in your regions and send prefects to your cities. I shall make an inventory of the treasures and order them to be divided into four parts: three for me, and one for you. I shall provide you with as many soldiers as you may wish, and take tribute from you, as much as you are able to give:
50:3 Ապա թէ ոչ՝ Յիսուսն այն, զոր դու Քրիստոս կոչես, մինչ զանձն ոչ կարաց ապրեցուցանել ի Հրէիցն, զքեզ զիարդ կարէ ապրեցուցանել ի ձեռաց իմոց:	50:3 But if you do not, that Jesus whom you call Christ, since he was unable to save himself from the Jews, how can he save you from my hands? ’:
50:4 Եւ ժողովեցան ամենայն զաւրքն, որ ի կողմանս արեւելից, ի Պարսից եւ ի Խուժաստանէ եւ ի կողմանէն Հնդկաց եւ յԱրուաստանէ եւ յԵգիպտացւոց կողմանէ առ Մաւիաս իշխան զաւրուն, որ նստէր ի Դամասկոս: Եւ կազմեցին նաւս պատերազմականս յԱղեքսանդրիա եւ յամենայն քաղաքս ծովեզերեայս. եւ լցին զինուք եւ մեքենայիւք զնաւս. [ԳՃ] նաւս մեծամեծս, առ մի նաւն հազար այր յընտիր ընտիր հեծելոց:	50:4 All the troops who were in the east assembled: from Persia, Khuzhastan, from the region of India, Aruastan, and from the region of Egypt (they came) to Muawiya, the prince of the army who resided in Damascus. They prepared warships in Alexandria and in all the coastal cities. They filled the ships with arms and artillery – [300] great ships with a thousand elite cavalry for each ship:
50:5 Եւ հրամայեաց գործել նաւս թեթեւս հինգ հազարս: Եւ գումարեաց ի նոսա արս սակաւս վասն թեթեւութեան, առ մի նաւ արս հարիւր, զի արագապէս ճախրեսցեն սլանալով առ մեծամեծ նաւաւք շուրջանակի ի վերայ մկանանց ծովուն. եւ արձակեաց զնոսա ընդ ծով: Եւ ինքն առ զզաւրս իւր որ ընդ իւր, եւ գնաց ի Քաղկեդոն:	50:5 He ordered [5,000] light ships to be built, and he put in them (only) a few men for the sake of speed, [100] men for each ship, so that they might rapidly dart to and fro over the waves of the sea around the very large ships. These he sent over the sea, while he himself took his troops with him and marched to Chalcedon:
50:6 Իբրեւ եհաս ի վերայ ամենայն երկրի՝ հնազանդեցան ամենայն բնակիչք աշխարհին ի ծառայութիւն՝ որ զծովեզերքն եւ լեռնականս եւ դաշտականս: Իսկ բազմութիւն զաւրաց Հոռոմին չոգան մտին ի Կոստանդնուպաւլիս պահապան քաղաքին. եւ ապականիչն չոգաւ եմուտ ի Քաղկեդոն, յամի երեքտասաներորդի Կոստանդնու:	50:6 When he penetrated the whole land, all the inhabitants of the country submitted to him, those on the coast and in the mountains and on the plains. On the other hand, the host of the Roman army entered Constantinople to guard the city. The destroyer reached Chalcedon in the [13th] year of Constans:
50:7 Կազմեալ ունէր յեզր ծովուն նաւս բազումս թեթեւս, զի յորժամ ծանրագոյն նաւքն հասանիցեն ի Քաղկեդոն՝ նա փութանակի հասցէ յաւգնականութիւն նոցա: Եւ զթուղթ արքային իւրեանց ետուն տանել ի քաղաքն առ Կոստանդին:	50:7 He kept the many light ships ready at the seashore, so that when the very heavy ships might arrive at Chalcedon he could rapidly go to their support. And he had the letter of their king taken into the city to Constans:
50:8 Եւ առ արքայ զթուղթն եւ եմուտ ի տունն Աստուծոյ, եւ անկաւ ի վերայ երեսաց իւրոց եւ ասէ. «Տես, Տէր, զնախատինսս, զոր նախատեցին զքեզ Հագարացիքս այս. եղիցի ողորմութիւն քոյ, Տէր, ի վերայ մեր, որպէս յուսամք ի քեզ:	50:8 The king received the letter, went into the house of God, fell on his face and note: ’See, Lord, the insults which these Hagarenes have inflicted upon you. “May your pity, Lord, be upon us, as we hope in you:
50:9 Լից զերեսս նոցա, անարգանաւք, եւ խնդրեսցեն զանուն քո, Տէր ամաչեցեալ խռովեսցին յաւիտեանս յաւիտենից, եւ ամաւթալից կորիցեն. ծանիցեն զի անուն քոյ Տէր է, եւ դու միայն բարձրեալ ես ի վերայ ամենայն երկրի»: Եւ վերացոյց զպսակն ի գլխոյ իւրմէ, եւ մերկացաւ զծիրանիսն եւ զգեցաւ քուրձ, եւ նստաւ ի վերայ մոխրոյ, եւ հրամայեաց պահս քարոզել ըստ աւրինակին Նինուէի՝ ի Կոստանդնուպաւլիս:	50:9 Fill their faces with indignity, and they will seek your name, Lord. They will be put to shame and disquieted for ever and ever; and they will perish full of shame. They will know that your name is Lord, and you only are raised on high over all the earth.” ’He lifted the crown from his head, stripped off his purple (robes) and put on sackcloth, sat on ashes, and ordered a fast to be proclaimed in Constantinople in the manner of Nineveh:
50:10 Եւ ահա եկին հասին ի Քաղկեդոն նաւք մեծամեծք յԱղեքսանդրացւոց կողմանէ հանդերձ ամենայն փոքր նաւովքն եւ ամենայն կազմուածովքն իւրեանց, զի էր կազմեալ ի վերայ նաւացն մանգղիոնս, եւ մեքենայս հրացանս, եւ մեքենայս քարընկէցս, աղեղնաւորս եւ պարսաւորս. զի յորժամ հասանիցեն ի պարիսպ քաղաքին՝ ի վերուստ ի գլխոյ աշտարակացն դիւրեաւ ելեալ ի պարիսպն՝ անկցին ի քաղաքն: Եւ հրամայեաց զնաւսն կարգել ճակատ առ ճակատս, եւ դիմել ի վերայ քաղաքին:	50:10 Behold the great ships arrived at Chalcedon from Alexandria with all the small ships and all their equipment. For they had stowed on board the ships mangonels, and machines to throw fire, and machines to hurl stones, archers and slingers, so that when they reached the wall of the city they might easily descend onto the wall from the top of towers, and break into the city. He ordered the ships to be deployed in lines and to attack the city:
50:11 Եւ իբրեւ մեկնեցան ի ցամաքէն իբր երկու ասպարիզաւք՝ անդ էր տեսանել զզաւրութիւն ահին Տեառն. զի ակնարկեաց Տէր յերկնից սաստիկ հողմոյ բռնութեամբ, եւ յարեաւ հողմն, մրրիկ մեծ, եւ դղրդեցաւ ծովն ի ներքուստ անդնդոց ի վեր, եւ բարձրացեալ դիզանային ալիքն նորա իբրեւ զկատարս բարձրաբերձ լերանց, եւ հողմն փոթորկեալ ի վերայ նոցա ճայթէր իբրեւ զամպ եւ գոչէր, եւ խոխոջիւն յանդնդոց լինէին:	50:11 When they were about two stades’ distance from the dry land, then one could see the awesome power of the Lord. For the Lord looked down from heaven with the violence of a fierce wind, and there arose a storm, a great tempest, and the sea was stirred up from the depths below. Its waves piled up high like the summits of very high mountains, and the wind whirled around over them; it crashed and roared like the clouds, and there were gurglings from the depths:
50:12 Եւ անկան աշտարակքն, կործանեցան մեքենայքն, քակտեցան նաւքն, եւ ընկղմեցան բազմութիւն զաւրացն ի խորս ծովուն. եւ մնացեալքն ի վերայ տախտակացն ցնդեցան ի վերայ ալեաց ծովուն, եւ տարաբերեալ այսր եւ անդր յելեւէջս ալեացն կործանեցան. զի եբաց ծովն զբերան իւր, եւ եկուլ զնոսա. եւ ոչ մնաց ի նոցանէ եւ ոչ մի:	50:12 The towers collapsed, the machines were destroyed, the ships broke up, and the host of soldiers were drowned in the depths of the sea. The survivors were dispersed on planks over the waves of the sea. Cast hither and thither in the tossing of the waves, they perished; for the sea opened its mouth and swallowed them. There remained not a single one of them:
50:13 Եւ ապրեցոյց Աստուած յաւուր յայնմիկ բարձրացեալ բազկաւ զքաղաքն ի ձեռն աղաւթից աստուածասէր թագաւորին Կոստանդիանոսի, եւ ոչ դադարեաց հողմոյն բռնութիւնն եւ ծովուն խռովութիւնն մինչեւ ցվեց աւուրս:	50:13 On that day by his upraised arm God saved the city through the prayers of the pious king Constans. For six days the violence of the wind and the turbulence of the sea did not cease:
50:14 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ տեսին Իսմայելացիքն զձեռն ահի Տեառն՝ բեկաւ սիրտ նոցա. եւ ելեալ ի գիշերի ի Քաղկեդոնէ՝ գնացին ի տեղի իւրեանց: Եւ միւս զաւրն, որ նստէր ի կողմանս Կապուտկացւոց՝ արար պատերազմ ընդ զաւրացն Յունաց. զոր եհար Յոյնն, եւ գնաց փախստական ի կողմանս Արուաստանի, հարեալ աւար զՉորրորդ Հայս:	50:14 When the Ismaelites saw the fearsome hand of the Lord, their hearts broke. Leaving Chalcedon by night, they went to their own land. The other army, which was quartered in Cappadocia, attacked the Greek army. But the Greeks defeated them, and it fled to Aruastan pillaging Fourth Armenia:
50:15 Եւ եղեւ յետ անցանելոյ աշնանային ժամանակին, ի մերձենալ ձմերայնոյ՝ եկն զաւրն Իսմայելի եւ նստաւ ի Դուին. եւ խորհէր երթալ հարկանել զՎիրս սրով սուսերի: Խաւսէր ընդ նմա ի ձեռն պատգամի սպառնալեաւք, զի կամ եկեսցեն ի ծառայութիւն նոցա, եւ կամ ի բաց թողցեն զերկիրն եւ գնասցեն:	50:15 After the autumn had passed and winter was approaching, the army of Ismael came and took up quarters at Dvin. It was planning to put Iberia to the sword. It parleyed with them in a threatening message, that they should either submit to them, or abandon their country and depart:
50:16 Իսկ նոքա չ առին յանձն առնել այնպէս, այլ պատրաստեցան ընդդէմ նոցա ի պատերազմ: Եւ գնաց Իսմայելացին ի վերայ նոցա պատերազմաւ՝ երթալ սատակել զնոսա իսպառ:	50:16 However, they did not agree to do so, but prepared to oppose them in battle. So, the Ismaelites moved against them in war, to go and exterminate them completely:
50:17 Այն-ինչ եղեւ նոցա ի ճանապարհ ելանել՝ անկաւ ի վերայ նոցա ցուրտ եւ ձիւն ձմերայնոյ. վասն որոյ չոգան փութանակի եւ գնացին ի կողմանս Ասորեստանի, եւ ի Հայս անիրաւութիւն ինչ ոչ գործեցին:	50:17 As they were setting out on their way, cold and winter snow beset them. Therefore, they departed rapidly for Asorestan, and caused no harm to Armenia:
50:18 Իսկ իշխանքն Հայոց որ ի Յունաց եւ որ ի Տաճկաց կողմանէ, Համազասպ եւ Մուշեղ, եւ այլն ամենայն եկեալ ի մի վայր միաբանեցան, եւ արարին ընդ միմեանս հաշտութիւն, զի մի եղիցի ի մէջ նոցա սուր եւ արիւնհեղութիւն, եւ անցուցին խաղաղութեամբ զաւուրս ձմերայնոյն, զի եւ զշինականսն ապրեցուցանեն:	50:18 Now the Armenian princes, from both Greek and Arab territory, Hamazasp and Musheł, and all the others, came together at one place and made a pact with each other that there should be no sword and shedding of blood among them, and that they should pass in peace the days of winter, so that they might safeguard the peasants:
50:19 Քանզի Ռշտունեաց տէրն անկաւ յախտս հիւանդութեան, եւ չոգաւ անկաւ յԱղթամար կղզի: Եւ ոչ գոյր նմա լինել կարողութիւն ելանել արտաքս կամ խորհել ինչ: Եւ բաժանեցին զերկիրն ըստ թուոյ իւրաքանչիւր հեծելոց, եւ կարգեցին հարկապահանջս ոսկւոյ եւ արծաթոյ:	50:19 For the lord of Ṙshtunik’ had fallen ill and withdrawn to the island of Ałt’amar. He was quite unable to come out or form any plans. They divided the land according to the number of each one’s cavalry, and they appointed tax-gatherers for gold and silver:
50:20 Եւ աստ էր տեսանել զաղէտս տարակուսի, զաւրէն հիւանդաց, յորժամ տագնապեսցի ցաւն, եւ հատանիցի ի խաւսից՝ այնպիսի ինչ եղեն. զի ոչ գոյր մարդկան տեղի փախստի եւ թագստեան, եւ ոչ խնայել ի ներքուստ, այլ որպէս ոք զի անկցի ի ծով՝ եւ ելս ոչ կարիցէ գտանել:	50:20 Here one could see the anguished affliction like that of the sick when illness seizes them and they are deprived of speech. Something of that sort happened. For there was no place for flight or refuge for the populace, nor mercy from above; but it was as if one might fall into the sea and be unable to find a way out:
50:21 Իսկ իբրեւ զայն ետես Ռշտունեաց տէրն՝ խնդրեաց յիւր զաւրս յԻսմայելացւոցն, զի հարցէ զՀայն եւ հալածական արասցէ, եւ զՎիրս սատակեսցէ ի սուր սուսերի:	50:21 Now when the lord of Ṙshtunik’ saw this, he requested for himself troops from the Ismaelites in order to strike the Armenian (troops) and expel them, and to put the Iberians to the sword:
