21:0 Յաղագս թէ ո՛րպէս ժողովեցան միաբանութեամբ նախարարքն Հայոց, եւ չոգան ածին զթագաւորն Յունաց` իւրեանց ի թիկունս օգնականութեան ի յերկիրն Հայոց. եւ թէ ո՛րպէս եկն թագաւորն Պարսից բազում զօրօք, եւ Ներսեհ արքայն Պարսից միաձի ճողոպրեալ փախստական անկանէր յերկիրն Պարսից:

 21:0 How all the lords of Armenian assembled in unity and sent to the emperor of Byzantium, pledging their loyalty; how king Nerseh of Iran came to Armenia with many troops but was defeated and escaped to Iran by a hairsbreadth:

21:1 Ապա առաւել ժողովեցան ի մի ժողով միաբանութեանն մարդիկ աշխարհին Հայաստան երկրին. նախարարք մեծամեծք. աւագք, կուսակալք, աշխարհակալք, ազատք, զօրագլուխք, դատաւորք պետք, իշխանք. բայց ի զօրավարացն, այլ եւ ի շինականաց անգամ ռամիկ մարդկանն:

 21:1 Then people of the land of Armenia assembled in a larger meeting of unity. This included the grandee naxarars, awags, governors, rulers of lands, azats, military commanders, judges, chiefs [pets], princes, as well as generals, shinakans, and even rhamiks:

21:2 Ապա խօսել սկսան այր ընդ ընգերի, եւ ասեն. Զինչ է այս, որ ի սուգ մտեալ եմք. թշնամիք այսու գամագիւտ լինին. այլ քան սակաւ ժամանակք են, այսրէն արշաւեսցեն թշնամիքն:

 21:2 Those assembled spoke with their comrades, saying: “What is this that we are doing, mourning? The enemy will conquer us in this way. Very soon they will invade:

21:3 Այլ եկա՛յք, ասեն, զանձինս անձամբք մխիթարեսցուք. անձանց եւ աշխարհի պահ կալցուք, եւ զտեառն բնակի վրէժ խնդրեսցուք:

 21:3 Come, let us console ourselves, save ourselves and our land, and seek vengeance for our natural lord:

21:4 Ապա առ հասարակ ամենայն մարդիկ աշխարհին ի մի միաբանութիւն եւ ի մի խորհուրդս ժողովեցան վասն օգնականութեան եւ ի թիկունս իւրեանց գտանելոյ:

 21:4 Thus, it was that all the people of the land came together and took counsel together to find aid and assistance for themselves:

21:2 Յայնմ ժամանակի առաքեցին ի մեծ նախարարաց անտի աւագանին Հայոց հանդերձ պատարագօք առ թագաւորն Յունաց, զի ի նա ձեռս տուեալ` ծառայեսցեն նմա հնազանդութեամբ, եւ լինիցի նա նոցա թիկունք օգնականութեան` խնդրել վրէժս ի թշնամեաց նոցա:

 21:2 They sent a delegation consisting of the great naxarars of the Armenian nobility carrying gifts to the Byzantine emperor proposing that they extend their hand to, and obediently serve him, and that he would aid them and support them in exacting vengeance from their enemies:

21:3 Ապա առաքեցին զԱնդովկ նահապետն Սիւնեաց, եւ զԱրշաւիրն կամսարական, նահապետն Արշարունեաց, որք երթեալ հասեալ էին յաշխարհն Յունաց ի կայսերական պաղատն թագաւորացն. եւ տային զհրովարտակն, եւ ունէին զպատարագսն բերեալ առաջի, եւ մատուցանէին զաշխարհապաղատ պատգամսն առաջի թագաւորին:

 21:3 They sent: Andovk, nahapet of Siwnik, Arshawir Kamsarakan, nahapet of Arsharunik. They reached the imperial palace of the kings in the land of Byzantium, presented the hrovartak, had the gifts brought forth, and presented the message of the entire land to the emperor:

21:4 Զոր իբրեւ լուաւ կայսրն զիրսն զայնոսիկ, մեծաւ փութով եւ բազում պատրաստութեամբ ի խնդիր ելանէր իրին հասելոյ. եւ օգնական եւ թիկունք լինէր աշխարին Հայոց:

 21:4 When the emperor heard about this, with great alacrity and preparation he undertook to expedite matters, to help and aid the land of Armenia:

21:5 Մանաւանդ զի զուխտն յիշեալ զդաշանցն կռելոց զերդմանցն հաստատութեան, միջնորդութեամբ ի մէջ կայսերն Կոստանդիանոսի եւ ի մէջ թագաւորին Տրդատայ եղեալ էր:

 21:5 This was especially so since he remembered the treaty sealed with an oath and confirmed which had existed between the emperor Constantine and king Trdat:

21:6 Արդ մինչ դեռ դեսպանքն երթեալք յերկրէն Հայոց ի կայսերական պաղատն` չեւ էին անդրէն յիւրեանց աշխարհն դարձեալ, ի կողմանց արեւելից խաղաց գնաց ինքն Ներսեհ արքայն Պարսից, գալ առնուլ այրել եւ աւերել, կորուսանել եւ միահաղոյն իսկ յիւր վտարել զսահմանս Հայաստան երկրին:

 21:6 Now while the emissaries who had gone to the imperial palace from the country of Armenia had not yet returned to their land, Nerseh himself, king of Iran, came from the east to burn, ruin, destroy and make the borders of the country of Armenia completely his own:

21:7 Եւ առեալ զամենայն զօրս իւր բնիւ աղխիւ եւ ամենայն մեծաւ կարաւանաւ, փղակոյտն բազմութեամբ հանդերձ, անթիւ վաճառօք եւ բնիւն մաշկապաճենօքն, եւ ամենայն կանանօքն, եւ հանդերձ տիկնանց տիկնաւն, եկն եհաս ի սահմանս Հայոց. խճողեաց ելից զերկիրն առ հասարակ:

 21:7 He took all of his troops with the main baggage, all in a great caravan, with a multitude of elephants, unlimited supplies, with the main tents [mashkapachens], all the women and the queen of queens, and arrived at the borders of Armenia. He filled up the entire country:

21:8 Յայնմ ժամանակի ազատազօրքն նախարարացն Հայոց առեալք զիւրաքանչիւր ընդանիս, լինէին փախստականք, ի կողմանս Յունաց անգանէին, գոյժ տային կայսերն բազմագունդ բանակին նախարարացն:

 21:8 Then the azatazork of Armenian naxarars took their families and fled to the Byzantine areas, bringing the bad news to the multi-brigade banak of the emperor’s naxarars:

21:9 Ապա իբրեւ զայս ամենայն լսէր թագաւորն Յունաց, նոյնօրինակ եւ նա զիւր զօրսն գումարէր. եւ չու արարեալ գայր հասանէր յերկիրն Հայոց ընդդէմ թագաւորին Պարսից:

 21:9 Now when the emperor of Byzantium heard all this, he too assembled his troops and came to the country of Armenia, against the king of Iran:

21:10 Եւ եթող զիւր զբանակն զՍատաղ քաղաքաւն. եւ ինքն ընտրեաց իւր արս երկուս գլխաւորս, արս իմաստունս հայաստան բանակէն, այս ինքն զԱրշաւիրն եւ զԱնդովկն. զի այս արք էին, որ չոգան առ նա դեսպանութեամբ յառաջնում նուագին:

 21:10 He left his army near the city of Satagh. He himself selected two principal wise men from the Armenian army, namely Arshawir and Andovk, who had previously gone to him as emissaries:

21:11 Եւ այսպէս հանդերձ նոքօք ինքն իսկ կայսրն ի շինականութեան կերպարանս ի կաղամբավաճառի օրինի, մտանէր ի բանակն Պարսից:

 21:11 Then the emperor himself entered the Iranian army in the disguise of a shinakan cabbage-seller:

21:12 Իբրեւ էր նա բանակեալ ի գաւառին Բասենոյ, ի գիւղն` որ անուանեալ կոչի Ոսխայ, եկին մտին ի բանակն արքային Պարսից, դիտեցին քննեցին զչափ առին զնոցա զօրութիւն զօրացն:

 21:12 The Iranian army was encamped in the district of Basean, in the village called Osxay. They came and entered the army of the king of Iran, and observed and noted the number of their troops:

21:13 Եւ անտի դարձան յիւրեանց բանակն, կազմեցան պատրաստեցան. գային հասանէին գտանէին զբանակն արքային Պարսից ի նմին տեղւոջ բանակեալ ի պղերգութեան յանհոգութեան յանկասկած խաղաղութեան:

 21:13 Then they returned to their camp and prepared their organization. The Byzantines came and attacked the army of the king of Iran encamped in that same place, finding them negligently unconcerned and unsuspectingly at rest:

21:14 Ապա հասեալ ի տուընջէն ժամուն, անկանէին ի վերայ թագաւորին Պարսից, ընդ սուր զամենայն բանակն հանէին, եւ ոչ զմի ոչ ապրեցուցանէին:

 21:14 Attacking during the daytime, they fell upon the Iranian king, putting everything to the sword and sparing no one:

21:15 Եւ առին զկապուտ զաւար բանակին, եւ զկանայս թագաւորին եւ զբամբիշն, եւ զբանսկան ընդ նոսին, եւ զինչս եւ զստացուածս նոցին ընդ նմին ի գերութիւն վարէին, զկանայս նոցա եւ զգանձս եւ զկեանս եւ զկազմած նոցա:

 21:15 Then they took the banak as loot, the king’s women, the [bambish] queen of queens and the women with her their possessions and goods into captivity - their women and treasures, provisions and equippage:

21:16 Բայց միայն թագաւորն պրծեալ մազապուր, պէշասպիկ մի սուրհանդակ առաջի, պրծեալ ելանէր փախստական. հազիւ ուրեմն կարէր անկանել հասանել յաշխարհ իւր:

 21:16 Only the king was able to escape by a hairsbreadth and go free as a fugitive, thanks to a swift running pony. And he barely reached his own land:

21:17 Իսկ կայսրն մեծաւ շքեղութեամբ անուանի պերճացեալ ի մէջ բանակին երեւեալ. զայր ի չափ հասեալ առ հասարակ կոտորէին, եւ զայլ ամենայն ի գերութիւն վարէին յերկիրն Յունաց:

 21:17 Then the emperor, elevated with great pomp, appeared in the midst of the army. They killed all the mature males, and took the rest as captives to the country of Byzantium:

21:18 Եւ ի վերայ երկրին թողոյր զիշխանսն վերակացուս զԱնդովկ եւ զԱրշաւիր, մեծապարգեւ մեծապատիւ մեծարէր. եւ յանձն արարեալ զնոսա ամենայն իշխանացն եւ զաշխարհն նոցա, եւ ինքն կայսրն չու արարեալ գնաց յերկիր իւր յերկիրն Յունաց:

 21:18 He left the princes Andovk and Arshawir as overseers of the land, exalting them with great gifts and great honors. The emperor entrusted all the princes and their land to them, and then departed for his own country, Byzantium:

21:19 Եւ արքայն Պարսից գնացեալ փախստական յերկիր իւր. եւ իբրեւ եհաս անդր` ժողովէր առ ինքն զամենայն մնացեալս իշխանութեան իւրոյ, եւ ի խոյզ եւ ի խնդիր անկանէր:

 21:19 The king of Iran went as a fugitive to his own country. When he got there, he assembled all those remaining under his authority and set about investigating things:

21:20 Խորհուրդ ի մէջ առնոյր` հարցեւքնին առնել. հրամայէր վերստին, զի տեսցեն եւ յայտ արասցեն` թէ ուստի՛ եղեւ սկիզբն պատերազմացն եւ մարտին:

 21:20 He held counsel and conducted an inquiry again so that they could see and reveal how this war had started:

21:21 Ապա ի վեր եկին եւ յայտնեցան իրքն առաջի նորա. զի յոչինչ իրաց ի վատթար բանից համարեցան զիրսն եղեալս, վասն ձիոյ միոյ կարծիս առնել զայն ամբոխ խռովութեան ի մոլեկան առնէն Շապուհ Վարազայն:

 21:21 On this occasion circumstances were disclosed and it was plainly revealed that it had arisen over an insignificant matter, a malicious slander, that the frenzied Shapuh Varaz had stirred up the disturbance over one single horse:

21:22 Ապա հրաման ետ հանել զպատիւն ի բաց, եւ մերկանալ ի նմանէ զպատուական պատմուճանն, եւ մեծաց հարուածոց արժանի առնէր զՎարազն:

 21:22 So, the king ordered that his patiw be removed, that his robe of honor be stripped from him, and that Varaz be subjected to great torments:

21:23 ըստ պարսկի օրինակին հրամայէր զմորթն ի բաց հանել, եւ խոտով լնուլ, եւ ի հրապարակի իւրում ի տեսիլ ծանականաց կանկնել հրամայէր:

 21:23 After the Iranian fashion, he commanded that Varaz’ skin be flayed, stuffed with straw, and the body hanged in the view of his concourse, in ignominy:

21:24 Եւ ինքն ի զղջումն եկեալ վասն իրացն եղելոց, ապա արձակէր զիշխանսն պատուականս ի հնազանդութիւն խաղաղութեան վասն գերեդարձ առնել ի կայսերէն միւսանգամ, եւ այնուհետեւ աղօթակերս արձակել ի հաշտութիւն խաղաղութեան խօսել ընդ կայսերն, զի գոնեայ զկանայս իւր արձակեսցէ ի գերութենէն, եւ բարձցէ ի նմանէ զծանակութեանցն զդսրովութեանցն նախատինս:

 21:24 He himself regretted what had happened and sent honorable princes to the emperor for peace, to get the captives returned and to beseech him to speak of peace and reconciliation so that at least his women be returned from captivity and he himself released from the ignominy of insulting blame:

21:25 Ապա գրէր հրովարտակ թագաւորն Յունաց Վաղէս առ արքայն Պարսից. Նախ դու, ասէ, դարձուսցես զգերութիւն առեալ յերկրէն Հայոց, եւ զթագաւորն Տիրան ինքնին գլխովին, եւ զամենայն ինչ զոր առեալ իցէ անտի. ապա յորժամ զայդ արասցես, եւ ես զիմս դարձուցից զոր առեալ եմ. զի եթէ ոչ նախ դու զնոցա զաւարն դարձուսցես, եւ ես ապա զքոյդ դարձուցից:

 21:25 The emperor of Byzantium, Vaghes, wrote a hrovartak to the king of Iran, saying the following: “First return the captives you took from the country of Armenia and principally king Tiran, as well as everything else you took thence. When you have done that, I will return what I have taken. But first you return their booty and then I will return yours:

21:26 Եւ իբրեւ լուաւ զայն հրաման արքայն Պարսից, վաղվաղակի զիրսն կատարէր. հանէր զկապեալն Տիրան ի տանէն բանդի կապանաց, խօսէր ընդ նմա ողոքով, զի թագաւորեցուսցէ զնա անդրէն յիւր աշխարհն արձակելով, զի երթիցէ նա պատուով:

 21:26 As soon as the king of Iran heard this command, he immediately implemented it. He removed the captive Tiran from the shackles of the prison house and spoke affectionately with him saying that he would once again enthrone him in his own land and return him in honor:

21:27 Ապա տուեալ պատասխանի Տիրանայ, եթէ անօգուտ է ինձ եւ անպատշաճ է` կուրութեամբ, անմարթ իսկ է կարի, ունել զթագաւորութիւն. բայց փոխանակ իմ թագաւորեցո զԱրշակ զորդի իմ:

 21:27 But Tiran replied: “In my blindness it is useless, improper and indeed impossible for me to hold the reign. But make my son, Arshak, king in my place:

21:28 Յայնմ ժամանակի թագաւորեցուցանէր զԱրշակ որդի նորա ի վերայ աշխարհին Հայոց. եւ զկանայս թագաւորին եւ զայլ գերին ամենայն, գանձիւք ընծայիւք եւ ստացուածովք հանդերձ, եւ միանգամայն դարձ առնէր ամենայն գերութեան:

 21:28 Then the Iranian king enthroned Arshak, Tiran’s son over the land of Armenia, simultaneously returning the king’s women, all the other captives, with treasures, presents, and goods:

21:29 Եւ զինքնին Տիրան թագաւորն Պարսից հանդերձեաց կազմեաց մեծաւ կազմութեամբ, եւ արձակեաց յիւր աշխարհէն յերկիրն Հայոց. եւ կատարեալ հաւատարմացոյց զասացեալսն հրամանաց թագաւորին Յունաց:

 21:29 With great preparation, the king of Iran personally organized and dispatched Tiran from his land to the country of Armenia. Thus, he faithfully implemented the Byzantine emperor’s commands:

21:30 Եւ իբրեւ զնոսա ի Հայս յուղարկէր, ապա եւ զի թագաւորէն Յունաց զառ ինքն եկեալսն դեսպանսն արձակէր յիւրմէ, զի երթիցեն պատմեսցեն թագաւորին Յունաց` թէ ո՛րպէս եւ կամ զիա՛րդ նա զհրամանսն կատարեաց զթագաւորին Յունաց, զի եւ թագաւորն Յունաց դարձուսցէ զգերութիւնն` զոր առեալ զթագաւորին Պարսից:

 21:30 When he had sent them to Armenia, he then dispatched those emissaries who had come to him from the Byzantine emperor, so that they would go and tell the emperor that he had implemented his commands, and so that the emperor would return what he had captured from the king of Iran:

21:31 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ լուաւ զայնս ամենայն թագաւորն Յունաց` եթէ կատարեաց ի գլուխ եհան զայս ամենայն ի նմանէ զտուեալ հրամանն թագաւորն Պարսից, եւ դարձ արար գերութեանն Հայոց եւ Տիրանայ արքային, հաճեցաւ:

 21:31 When the emperor of Byzantium heard all this, that the Iranian king had done all he had commanded, returning the Armenian captives and king Tiran, he was pleased:

21:32 Յայնմ ժամանակի եւ թագաւորն Յունաց առնէր գերէդարձ գերութեան արքային Պարսից:

 21:32 Then the Byzantine emperor returned the captives of the Iranian king:

21:33 Եւ հանդերձեաց կազմեաց թագաւորն Յունաց զկանայս թագաւորին Պարսից մեծաւ պատուով, եւ զամենայն գերութիւնս նոցա ընդ նոսին յերկրէն Յունաց յերկիրն Պարսից դարձուցանէր, եւ բարեաւ առ թագաւորն յուղարկէր:

 21:33 He sent the women of the king of Iran back to him in great honor, and with them, all that had been captured:

21:34 Կատարեցաւ երրորդ դարք, քսան եւ մի պատմութեանց դպրութիւնք, ժամանակագիր կանոնք Փաւստեայ Բիւզանդեայ ժամանակագիր մեծի պատմագրի, որ էր ժամանակագիր Յունաց:

 21:34 The third part consisting of twenty-one chapters of the stories of Pawstos Buzand, the great chronicler-historian, who was a Greek chronicler, has ended:
