51:0 Եւ սոցա դեռ եւս խաւսելով զայս այսպէս` մի ոմն ի դահճացն, որ սիրելապէս ընդունելութիւնս ունէր ընդ կապեալ նախարարս Հայոց, լուեալ ճշգրտապէս յերանելի Խուժկէն` եկեալ յայտնէր նոցա զստոյգ խորհուրդն, եւ տայր գիտել զարդարն, թէ ո՛րպէս տուեալ է հրաման թագաւորին յաղագս սպանման քահանայիցն:

 51:0 While they were discussing this matter, one of the executioners—as was accurately learned from the blessed Xuzhik—a man affectionately inclined toward the bound Armenian naxarars—came and revealed to them (the Iranians’) actual plan. He informed them of the truth, regarding how the king had given the order concerning the killing of the priests:

51:1 Զոր ստուգեալ նախարարացն` լային դառնապէս. իբրեւ ոչ եթէ ոչ կամելով զնահատակութիւն սրբոցն, որում եւ ինքեանք իսկ փափաքէին լինել արժանի, այլ վասն մնալոյ ի նոցանէ որբք եւ անմխիթարք:

 51:1 When the naxarars were certain of this, they wept bitterly, not because they did not want the saints martyred, since they themselves desired to be worthy of the same, but because of those who would be left orphaned and unconsoled:

51:2 Իսկ սրբոցն եւ յառնէն իսկ ճշգրտեալ զիւրեանց հաստատապէս աւետիսն` զաւրացեալք զուարճանային ցնծութեամբ, եւ տուեալ փառս Աստուծոյ` իսկոյն երեկոյին պաշտամանն պատրաստէին. քանզի եւ անագանագոյն իսկ էր այնուհետեւ ըստ այլ աւուրց պաշտամանն ժամ:

 51:2 As for the holy men, when they accurately learned that the glad tidings regarding them were definite, they were strengthened and became joyously happy. They glorified God, and immediately prepared for the evening worship, which on that day was later than on other days:

51:3 Որ քանզի եւ եկք ամբարակապետին ի շահաստանն ոչ ինչ էին վաղ, վասն որոյ կալ զգիշերն անդէն հարկաւորեցաւ ի շահաստանին:

 51:3 The fact that the ambarakapet had not come early to the shahastan meant that they were obliged to spend the night there:

51:4 Եւ սրբոցն կատարեալ զկանոն երեկոյին պաշտամանն` վայելէին սուղ ինչ եւ դոյզն ռոճկովն որպէս բազմախորտիկս անուշահոտութեամբ. եւ անուշակ ընթրեացն ուրախութեանն յերկարեալ զուրախութիւն ճաշակմանն մխիթարութեան շնորհիւ, զաւրութեամբ Աստուծոյ սուրբ Հոգւոյն, եւ յարուցեալ յընթրեացն, փառաւորելով եւ աւրհնելով զԱստուած` կատարէին զաղաւթսն:

 51:4 After the holy men completed the canon of the evening service, they enjoyed a poor and small (meal, provided for) by (their) maintenance as though it consisted of many fragrant delicacies. Joy in the delicious meal prolonged the joy of comfort, with the power of the holy Spirit of God. Arising from the meal, they glorified and blessed God, reciting prayers:

51:5 Հրաման տային սուրբ քահանայապետքն Աստուծոյ կապելոցն նախարարաց` աղաւթից եւ տքնութեան պարապելոյ ըստ կարգի իւրաքանչիւր ուրուք զգիշերն զայն, ասելով ցամենեսեան այս պէս:

 51:5 The holy priests of God commanded the bound naxarars, in accordance with each one’s rank, to pass that night in prayer and vigils. (The priests) said to all of them:

51:6 Զի եթէ զոք ի ձէնջ այսաւր յուղարկէիք ի Հայս, ո՞չ ապաքէն առ իւրաքանչիւր սիրելիս թուղթս ողջունացոյցս եւ պատգամս ուրախալիցս յղէին խնդութեամբ. նաեւ յաղագս ճանապարհորդելոյ ի ձէնջ ուրուք խնդրէիք յԱստուծոյ` ողջամբ հասանել առ իւրաքանչիւր ընտանիս եւ զեղեալ ձեզ նմա զբանն կատարել:

 51:6 If any of you today should travel to Armenia would you not, truly, send letters of greeting and messages of joyous delight to each of your dear ones? You should beseech God about the journey so that each person reaches his family safely, and that your compact with Him is fulfilled:

51:7 Եւ արդ` աւասիկ յուղարկիմք մեք ի ձէնջ առ Աստուած. խնդրեցէ՛ք ամենեքեան ի Փրկչէն Քրիստոսէ եւ ի սուրբ նորա Հոգւոյն` լինել աներկիւղ քաջալերութեամբ ամենեցուն մեզ արժանի երկնաթռիչ ցանկալի ուղւոյն, տանել ձեզ ողջոյն եւ զյանձնարարութիւն առ բազումողորմն Քրիստոս եւ առ սուրբ գունդն առաքելոց եւ մարգարէից եւ ամենայն սրբոց:

 51:7 But behold, now we are about to leave you to go to God. All of you beseech the Savior Christ and His holy Spirit that we, with intrepid encouragement, be worthy of the desirable heavenward road, and that we salute the most merciful Christ and the blessed brigade of Apostles, the prophets and all the saints, and recommend you to them:

51:8 Որոց միշտ բարեխաւսութեամբ թախանձեսցի գորովալից գութ բազումողորմ արարչին Քրիստոսի` լինել ձեզ մխիթարիչ եւ փրկիչ. եւ արձակեսցէ զձեզ յերեւելի կապանացդ յորում էքդ, եւ ամաչեցուցանէ զնախանձորդս ձեր եւ զթշնամիս:

 51:8 With the intercession of the kind and most compassionate creator, Christ, He may be your consoler and savior. May you be released from the heroic shackles which now confine you, and may your detractors and enemies be put to shame:

51:9 Տացէ՛ ձեզ տեսանել զաշխարհն Հայոց եւ զընտանիս ձեր, եւ անդ ամփոփեալ զոսկերս իւրաքանչիւր ուրուք զձեր` առ ոսկերս հարց ձերոց ժողովեսցէ, եւ յաներեւոյթ կապանաց սատանայի արձակեալ զոգիս ձեր` պահեսցէ անվնաս յաւր տեառն Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի:

 51:9 May you see the land of Armenia and your families, and may your bones be placed there with those of your fathers. May your souls be freed from the invisible shackles of Satan, and be kept unharmed until the day of the (coming of) lord Jesus Christ:

51:10 Եւ լուեալ զայնպիսի հրաման ի սուրբ քահանայիցն Քրիստոսի ամենայն նախարարացն` ետուն պատասխանի եւ ասեն. «Ո՞ւմ արդեաւք յաղթիցէ քուն յարքայութեանն, ուր ոչ գոյ տքնութիւն եւ ոչ ծանրութիւն տաղտկութեան. եւ կամ ո՞ արդեաւք ախտացեալ տրտմեսցի յանանց բարութեանն, ուստի մերժեալ են ցաւք եւ տրտմութիւնք եւ հեծութիւնք:

 51:10 When all the naxarars heard such a command from the blessed priests of Christ, they replied: “Who can be conquered by sleep in the Kingdom, where there is no sleeplessness and no burden of weariness. And who will be grieved by disease in the eternal goodness, where pain, sorrow, and sobbing are absent:

51:11 Եւ մեզ աւրս այս կարապետ եւ առիթ է աւուրն այնմիկ, ուր վարդապետութիւնք սուրբ քահանայիցն Աստուծոյ քարոզեալ լսելի լինէր ի միջի մերում:

 51:11 For us, today is a precursor of that day, and an opportunity to hear in our midst the doctrines of the blessed priests of God sermonized:

51:12 Եւ տրտմութիւն ընդէ՞ր իսկ բնաւ ծնանիցի ի սիրտս ուրուք, որք արժանի եղաք ցանկ զծնողս մեր եւ զհոգեւոր վարդապետս ի կենդանութեան մերում ի մարմնի իբրեւ զհրեշտակս տեսանել, եւ ի վախճանի իբրեւ զզուարթունս:

 51:12 And why should sadness be in anyone’s heart? For we are worthy to see in our own lifetimes, in the flesh, our parents and spiritual vardapets, who are like angels, and who, in their death are joyful:

51:13 Բայց որ արտասուեմքս փղձկալով` որպէս Փրկչին ամենեցուն Քրիստոսի զԵրուսաղէմ տեսեալ կամ զՂազար, զոր յարոյցն ի մեռելոց, թէ ընդէ՞ր իսկ անմահ եւ անախտ ստեղծուածս յԱրարչէն, գերեալ ի խաբէութենէ թշնամւոյն, դարձեալ ի հող` անկաւ ընդ ախտիւ եւ մահուամբ:

 51:13 But our eyes are full of tears, like Christ the Savior of all-seeing Jerusalem, or Lazarus who was raised from the dead, (wondering) why the deathless and disease-free creation of the Creator, ensnared by the trickery of the enemy, returns again to earth, fallen to disease and death:

51:14 Եւ այսպիսի բանս աւետալիցս լուեալ ի նախարարացն սուրբ քահանայիցն Աստուծոյ` մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ սկսան ամենեքեան տարածել զձեռս ի յերկինս, գոհանալ զԱստուծոյ եւ ասել. «Գոհանամք զքէն, Աստուած, որ ի շնորհէ քարոզութեան սուրբ առաքելոցն բազումս ծնար առաքեալս, եւ ի շնորհէ ճգնազգեցիկ մարտիրոսացն անթիւս ծնար նահատակս:

 51:14 When the holy priests of God heard such words of glad tidings from the naxarars, all of them began to raise their hands to heaven, thanking God with great gladness, saying: “We thank You, God, that through the grace of the preaching of the blessed Apostles, You begot many Apostles, and through the grace of ascetic martyrs, You begot many martyrs:

51:15 որպէս առաքեալն եւ խոստովանողն տէրն Գրիգորիոս, արարողն ուղիղ գործոց եւ ուսուցիչն յստակ եւ անհեղգ վարդապետութեան, նախանձեցուցեալ զամենեսեան ի բարի նախանձս` ծնաւ վարդապետս եւ անթիւ նահատակս, յոլով միանձունս, անչափ դասս կուսանաց, զամենայն անձն բնաւ տաճար բնակութեան սուրբ Երրորդութեանդ յաւրինեաց:

 51:15 Such an Apostle was the confessor lord Gregory, a doer of clean deeds and a teacher of a clear and vigilant doctrine which (who) made everyone strive for the good, who begot vardapets and innumerable martyrs, many cenobites, uncountable orders of virgins, creating in everyone a temple for the dwelling of the blessed Trinity:

51:16 Գոհանամք զքէն, Փրկիչ, որ ի հոտէն սրբոյն Գրիգորիոսի զոչխարսն առաւել քան զհովիւս բանաւորս արարեր, եւ զաշակերտս ի ժողովրդենէն առաւել քան զվարդապետս յաւրինեցեր գիտունս:

 51:16 We thank you, Savior, for making the sheep of the flock of saint Gregory more rational than the shepherds, and for making students drawn from the people more wise than the vardapets:

51:17 Ահա եւ մեք այժմ զաւրացեալք քաջալերեցաք ի բանից շնորհալից հոգեւոր ծննդոցս մեր, հարք յորդւոց, վարդապետք յաշակերտաց, քահանայք ի ժողովրդոց:

 51:17 We are now strengthened and encouraged by the graceful words of our spiritual parents, fathers to sons, vardapets to students, priests to the people:

51:18 Եւ արդ` յուղարկիմք ի սոցանէ ուրախութեամբ, որոց արկեալ զմեզ յուղի` առ քեզ առաքեն, եւ ինքեանք մնալով ի մարմնի` ընդ քեզ են եւ առ քեզ, եւ քեւ զաւրանան:

 51:18 We depart from those who have placed us on the path to You joyfully. (Our spiritual teachers) remaining in the flesh stay with you and are strengthened by you:

51:19 Պահեա՛ զսոսա ամենազաւր աջովդ քո, պարսպեա՛ զնոսա ամրութեամբ սուրբ Հոգւոյդ քո, մխիթարեա՛ զսոսա ուրախութեամբ բանի քո. զխաղաղութիւն քո տո՛ւր սոցա եւ աճեցո՛ ի սոսա զշնորհսն:

 51:19 Preserve them with Your almighty right hand, surround them with the security of Your holy Spirit, comfort them with the gladness of Your word. Give them our peace and let (Your) grace grow in them:

51:20 Եւ այսպէս աւրհնեալք զերանելի կապեալսն եւ հզաւր ամենակալին յանձնեալ` ասեն. «Նա պահեսցէ զձեզ ողջս, եւ Հոգւովն իւրով սրբով մխիթարեսցէ զձեզ հանապազ:

 51:20 So blessing the venerable captives and entrusting them to the Almighty, (the priests) note: “He will preserve you in health, and always comfort you with His holy Spirit:

51:21 Եւ դուք մի՛ տրտմիք, այլ ուրախութեամբ ուրախ լերուք յայն որ ասացն, թէ Ոչ թողից զձեզ որբս. գամ, ասէ առ ձեզ. որ եկեալ իսկ է եւ է ի միջի ձերում. որ արձակէ զձեզ ի կապանացդ յորում էքդ, եւ պահեսցէ զձեզ յուսով աւգնականութեան իւրոյ եւ տայ ասել ձեզ համարձակաձայն պարծանաւք, թէ Վասն քո մեռանիմք զաւրհանապազ. համարեցաք որպէս զոչխար ի սպանդ:

 51:21 Be not saddened, but rejoice in the word that ’I shall not leave you as orphans, but will come to you [John 14, 18]. ’ For indeed He has come and is among you. He will release you from the bonds which now confine you, and will keep you with the hope of His aid. He will cause you to boldly say in glory: ’For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. ’:

51:22 Եւ ամենատէրն խորտակէ զսատանայ ի ներքոյ ոտից ձերոց, երեւելիս եւ պայծառս ցուցցէ զձեզ ի մէջ ազգիս ամբարշտի, եւ դարձուսցէ զձեզ ի յերկիր ձեր:

 51:22 The lord of all will crush Satan beneath your feet and display you as prominent and radiant in the midst of impious people, and He will return you to your country:

51:23 Պահեսցէ զտունս ձեր, սնուսցէ զտղայս ձեր, ժառանգեցուսցէ զաւակի ձերում զվիճակ հարց իւրեանց. նմա փառք եւ այժմ եւ յամենայն յաւիտեանս. ամէն:

 51:23 May he preserve your tuns, nourish your children, and let your son( s) inherit the share of their fathers. Glory to Him now and forever, amen:

51:24 Եւ կատարեալ սրբոյն Ղեւոնդի զբանս վարդապետութեան եւ մխիթարութեանս այսորիկ`ըստ հրամանին սրբոյն Յովսէփայ եւ սրբոյն Սահակայ, որոց եւ նոցա աւրհնեալ զերանելի նախարարսն եւ զայլ ժողովեալսն ընդ նոսա` յանձնեցին զամենեսեան սրբոյ Երրորդութեանն, եւ կատարեցին զաղաւթս:

 51:24 The blessed Ghewond completed these words of doctrine and consolation in accordance with the command of the blessed Yovsep’ and Sahak, who also blessed the venerable naxarars and the others gathered with them. They entrusted all of them to the holy Trinity and completed their prayers:

51:25 Եւ եղեւ ամենայն անձն երանելի կապելոցն նախարարացն որպէս զանձինս այնոցիկ, որք ժողովեալ էին ի վերնատունն եւ բնակէին ընդ սուրբ առաքեալսն, լցեալք սուրբ Հոգւոյն շնորհիւ, քաջալերեալք եւ ապաւինեալք ի յոյսն երկնաւոր:

 51:25 Every one of the venerable captive naxarars resembled those men who had assembled in (Christ’s) attic, and they dwelled among the blessed Apostles, filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, encouraged and taking refuge in divine hope:
