55:0 Իսկ Վեհդենշապհոյ ի սկզբանն ոչ համարէր արժանի պատմել Խուժկին զսուրբ քահանայիցն, զոր ինչ գործելոց էր ընդ նոսա, այլ ասէր, թէ «ի Վրկան տանիմք եւ անտի արձակեմք:

 55:0 Now at first Vehdenshapuh did not consider it proper to reveal to the Xuzhik what he planned to do with the blessed priests, saying instead: “I am taking them to Hyrcania, where I shall set them free:

55:1 Եւ երթային այն աւր ի գեաւղ մի, որում անուն էր Ռեւան, հեռի ի Նիւշապհոյ որպէս հրասախաւք վեցիւք եւ թէ աւելի եւս, ըստ չափոյ համարուց Պարսկացն, եւ դադարէին անդ մինչեւ ցառաւաւտուն պահն:

 55:1 That day they travelled until they came to a village named Rhewan some six hrasax or more distant from Niwshapuh (or more, according Iranian standards), where they stopped until the morning watch:

55:2 Եւ յառաւաւտեան պահուն յարուցեալ փութով գաղտ, ոչինչ զգացուցեալ ումեք ի գեղջէն, այլ եւ ոչ ամենեցունց զորս ընդ ինքեանս, բայց միայն երանելի Խուժկաւն եւ անաւրէն դահճաւքն, որովք սպանանելոց էին զսուրբսն ըստ հրամանի թագաւորին` գնային ի գեղջէն լռելեայն:

 55:2 At that time they hurriedly arose, and without letting anyone from the village or even all of the people in their party know, (with the exception of the venerable Xuzhik and the impious executioners by whom the saints were to be killed at the king’s order), (those participating) secretly and silently left the village:

55:3 Եւ առեալ զսուրբսն դահճացն` գնացին զբովանդակ մնացեալ մասն ի գիշերոյն ընդ անկոխ անապատն, հեռի ի գեղջէն որպէս պարսիկ հրասախաւ միով եւ թէ աւելագոյն. եւ ընդ ծագել առաւաւտուն հասանէին ի տեղի մի քարուտ, յառապարաձոր աւազուտ, ի տեղի` յոր ոչ հասանէր արաւտական եւ ոչ բնաւ անցանէր ընդ նա ուղեւոր, վասն ոչ գտանելոյ երբէք ի նմա ճանապարհ:

 55:3 The executioners took the saints and travelled the entire remaining portion of the night through an untouched desert far from the village, a distance of perhaps one Iranian hrasax, or more. At dawn they reached a rocky, sandy valley to which no herdsman came, and through which no traveller ever passed, since there was no road to it:

55:4 Եւ արկեալ աթոռս երեցունց իշխանացն` նստէին ամբարապետն Վեհդենշապուհ եւ Ջնիկան մայպետն արքունի եւ Մովան անդերձապետն:

 55:4 Chairs were placed for the three princes, and they sat: the ambarapet, Vehdenshapuh; Jnikan, the court maypet; and Movan, the anderjapet:

55:5 Իսկ երանելւոյ Խուժկին համբարձեալ առ Արարիչն ամենայնի զուշն:

 55:5 The venerable Xuzhik raised his thoughts to the Creator of all:

55:6 Եւ կացուցեալ զսուրբ նահատակսն յատենի` ասէ ցնոսա Վեհդենշապուհ. «Բազում եւ անհամար չարիս գործեալ է ձեր, եւ բազում Արեացն կոտորածի պարտաւոր էք. զի թէ լոկ միայն երկուց եւ կամ երից անձանց մահու պատճառ էիք` սակայն մեծ էր, եւ չէիք արժանի կելոյ, թող թէ այնպիսւոյ աշխարհի մեծի, որպէս Հայքն են, եւ այնչափ բազում արեանց որ անդ հեղան. եւ ամենայնի այնմ դուք էք պարտաւորք, եւ ձեր առնելով եւ խրատու գործեցաւ ամենայն գործն այն:

 55:6 Having brought the blessed champions to the atean, Vehdenshapuh said to them: “You have worked numerous, countless evils, and are responsible for the deaths of many Aryans. If you were the cause of death for merely two or three people, that would be great enough and you would not deserve to live. (But you were guilty of the deaths) of such people of a great land as Armenia is, and furthermore a huge number of Aryans died there. You are responsible for all of this, and all of it was done by you and with your counsel:

55:7 Եւ ի վերայ այդչափ ձերոյ յանցանաց եւ մահապարտութեան` արքայից արքայ առ ձեզ կարի բարերարութիւն արար, զի մեզ հրաման ետ եւ ասէ. «Թէ հաւանին արեգական եւ կրակի երկիր պագանել, եւ զմեր աւրէնս յանձն առնուն պաշտել` նոցա զմահապարտութիւնն թողում, զազատորեարսն զոր կապեալ է՝ արձակեմ ի Հայս, եւ զիւրաքանչիւր ուրուք զտանուտէրութիւն տամ եւ զգահ եւ զպատիւ:

 55:7 Despite your grave crimes and condemnation to death, the king of kings has done you a great kindness, for he ordered us, saying: ’Should they consent to worship the sun and fire, and accept our faith, I will excuse the death-penalty, I will send the bound nobles back to Armenia, and give to each tanuterut’iwn, gah and patiw. ’:

55:8 Արդ` դուք յիշեցէ՛ք ե՛ւ զձեր անձինսդ զմտաւ ածել եւ զայնչափ կապելոց զոգիս որք ի բանտին էին, եւ զի զհրամանն արքայից արքայի կամաւ եւ ախորժելով յանձն առէք. եւ որպէս եղէք պատճառք բազում արեանց` լերո՛ւք այժմ պատճառք բազմաց կենդանութեան:

 55:8 Remember and keep in mind the large number of captives in prison, and willingly and enthusiastically accept the king of king’s command; so that, just as you were the cause (of death) for many Aryans, you may be the cause of life for many:

55:9 Ապա թէ ոչ առնուք յանձն, եւ տակաւին ի նմին ապշութեան յամառեալ կեայք` դուք մեռանիք, եւ զնոսա հրամայէ սպանանել. եւ ամենայն արիւնքն որ յառաջն հեղան եւ որ այժմ հեղլոց են` ի ձեր յոգւոց խնդրին յաստուածոց:

 55:9 But should you not accept it, and persist in the same foolishness, then you shall die, and (the king) will order them killed, and the gods will demand from your souls all the blood which you have shed and will shed:

55:10 Եւ զայս ամենայն բանս խաւսեցաւ Վեհդենշապուհ հանդերձ ընկերաւքն իւրովք ընդ սուրբսն:

 55:10 Vehdenshapuh and his comrades said all of these things to the saints:

55:11 Հրաման տային երանելւոյն Սահակայ եպիսկոպոսին` թարգմանել սրբոյն Յովսեփայ եւ սրբոյն Ղեւոնդի եւ այլոց ընկերակցացն. քանզի սուրբ եպիսկոպոսն միայն գիտէր պարսկերէն, եւ այլ ոք ի սրբոցն ոչ գիտէր:

 55:11 They ordered the venerable bishop Sahak to translate this for the blessed Yovsep’, the blessed Ghewond and their other comrades, for none of the other saints except the blessed Sahak knew Persian:

55:12 Որոյ անդրէն պատասխանի արարեալ սրբոյ եպիսկոպոսին Սահակայ` ասէ ցԴենշապուհ եւ ցայլսն որ նստէին ընդ նմա. «Մի՛ տայք ինչ, ասէ, ասել ցդոսա բանս, որ ոչ են արժանի սոցա լսողութեան. վասն զի խաւսք, որ ինձ ատելի թուին եւ արժանի ծաղու, զի՞ եւս ասեմ ցնոսա, զոր գիտեմ թէ իբրեւ լսեն` եւ զձեզ եւ զյղելիսն ի միասին անգոսնեն:

 55:12 But the holy bishop Sahak immediately responded to Denshapuh and to the others seated with him: “Do not ask me to say something to them which does not befit their hearing, for how can I say something to them which I myself find hateful and ridiculous. For I know that as soon as they hear it, they will all deride both you and the sender:

55:13 Արարէ՛ք զինչ եւ կամիք, եւ մի՛ յերկարեալ խաւսիք ընդ մեզ բանս սնոտիս եւ պատգամս ընդունայնս:

 55:13 Do as you please, but do not procrastinate by speaking futile words and (relaying) vain messages to us:

55:14 Եւ սրտմտեալ Դենշապհոյ եւ այլոցն` ասեն ցսուրբն. «Դու հարկաւորութեամբ ասա՛ ցդոսա. թող գիտասցուք եւ զդոսա խաւսս եւ զկամս:

 55:14 Denshapuh and the others became enraged and said to the saints: “You will inform them. Let us know their words and wishes:

55:15 Եւ սրբոյ եպիսկոպոսին կարճառաւտիւ զբանսն եւ զպատգամս թագաւորին ասացեալ ցսուրբ ընկերակիցսն իւր, եւ սրբոցն լուեալ` մեծաձայն ծաղու անգոսնեցին զբանիւքն. զոր եւ իմացեալ անաւրէն իշխանացն` առաւելապէս զայրացան:

 55:15 The holy bishop briefly informed his blessed comrades of the words and the king’s message, and as soon as the saints heard them, they began to loudly jeer. When the impious princes saw this, they became yet more angered:

55:16 Սակայն պատասխանի տուեալ սրբոյ կաթողիկոսին Յովսէփայ` ասէ, թէ «Եղեւ հարցումնդ այդ ատենաւ ի դրան առաջի հազարապետին Արեաց Միհրներսեհի, եւ լուեալ ի մէնջ զբանս մեր եւ զկամս, զոր եւ թագաւորին գիտել ետ:

 55:16 However, the blessed kat’oghikos Yovsep’ replied: “That question was put to us in the atean at court, before the hazarapet of the Aryans, Mihrnerseh. He heard our response and wishes and informed the king:

55:17 Նոյն են մեր ամենեցուն կամք եւ բանք, եւ ոչ փոփոխեմք զբանս մեր, որպէս երբեմն խաւլացեալք իբրեւ զանխորհուրդս` եւ այժմ զղջացեալ ապաշաւեմք իբրեւ զվնասակարս:

 55:17 We all have the same responses and wishes as then and have not altered them, as though we thoughtlessly and foolishly said them and now, having become well, seek asylum as guilty people:

55:18 Այս եւեթ խորհուրդ եւ խնդիր աւր քան զաւր աճէ ի սիրտս մեր, թէ ընդէ՞ր ոչ այսաւր քան զերեկն եւ զեռանդն ցուցանի գործ յանձինս մեր լաւութեան եւ արարուած բարւոյ, ի հաւատս յորում եմք` խորհել ի սոյն եւ կեալ սովաւ եւ ի միասին վախճանել:

 55:18 As this sole plan and matter has grown in our hearts day by day, why today should we be less fervent about the good deed we accomplished than yesterday? We have resolved to live or die together with the same faith we now have:

55:19 Այլ յաղագս երկրպագութեան արեգականդ որ ասէք, թէ հրաման ետ թագաւորն, զոր թէ յանձն առեալ հաւանիք` ասէ, կեայք դուք եւ ազատորեարն որ ի կապանս են, եւ եթէ յամառեալ չկամիք առնուլ յանձն` եւ դուք մեռանիք եւ զնոսա հրամայեմք սպանանել. մեզ մի՛ լիցի ուրանալ զճշմարտութիւն եւ ծառայել սուտ անուանելոց աստուածոց, որ ոչ են աստուածք. եւ մերով ուրացութեամբ ումեք ի հաւատացեալ կապելոցն մի՛ լիցի արձակումն եւ ի յաւիտենից անլոյծ կապանսն անկանել. զոր եւ նոքա այժմ առաւել եւս քան զմեզ խնդրեն յԱստուծոյ, զմեր վասն Աստուծոյ զվախճանն, քան թէ զկեալն մեր ուրացութեամբ:

 55:19 As for the king’s order you mentioned, that ’should you agree to worship the sun, you and the noble folk in bondage, shall live, but if you stubbornly refuse, you will die and we shall order them killed’—God forbid that we should apostasize the truth and serve falsely-named gods, which are not gods at all. Let it not happen that through our apostasy anyone of the believing captives be released and fall into eternally unbreakable bonds. They are now, more than us, beseeching God for our death for God, than for our lives with apostasy:

55:20 Այլ թէ հնար էր ձեզ այժմ գիտել մարգարէութեամբ, թէ ո՛րպէս (վասն) պատգամիդ այդորիկ, զոր բերէք առ մեզ հրամանաւ թագաւորին, թուիք մեզ անմիտք եւ կորուսեալք, եւ դուք եւ որ զձեզն յղեաց` ողորմելի զանձինս ձեր եւ զթագաւորին քան զամենայն թշուառացելոց ի մարդկանէ հաշուէիք:

 55:20 Too bad it is not possible for you to know through prophecy the extent to which you seem to us mindless and lost because of that message you have brought us by the king’s order, and that we consider you and the one who sent you, the king, more pitiful than all the wretches of mankind:

55:21 Բայց զոր ինչ կամիք` արարէք վաղ, եւ կամ երբ կամիք:

 55:21 But do as you please, right away, or whenever you choose:

55:22 Եւ ասացեալ զայս սրբոյ կաթողիկոսին Յովսեփայ` սրտմտեալ զայրացաւ Վեհդենշապուհ եւ որք ընդ նմա հաւատարիմքն էին, եւ հրաման ետ սրբոյն Սահակայ ասել ցնա. «Զի թէպէտ եւ թուին մեզ ծանր թշնամանքդ, որով թշնամանեալ ասացեր զմեզ անմիտս եւ կորուսեալս, սակայն առ համարձակապէսն յանդգնութեամբն, զոր իշխեցեր յաստուածանման թագաւորն ասել բանս անարժանս` իբրեւ զոչինչ թուին ի մեզ կողմն թշնամանքդ մեր անձանց եւ թեթեւութիւն: Բայց դու գիտեա՛, զի քեզէն զկորուստ անձինդ խնդրեցեր եւ առեր, եւ կեալ քեզ այսուհետեւ անհնար է:

 55:22 When the blessed kat’oghikos Yovsep’ had said this, Vehdenshapuh and the loyal men with him became enraged, and (Vehdenshapuh) ordered the blessed Sahak to say to Yovsep’: “Although we regard your enmity toward us as grave, which made you call us mindless and lost, we consider these personal insults as nothing compared to the worthless things you boldly dared to say about the god-like king. But know that the destruction which you sought for yourselves you now have obtained, and that it is impossible for you to live:

55:23 սակայն պարտ է մեզ եւ զիւրաքանչիւր զայլոց գիտել զկամս եւ զընտրողութիւն, վասն զի աւրէնք մեր այսպէս ասեն:

 55:23 However, we must know the wishes and choice of each of the others, for our laws so dictate:
