6:126 Առաջին զմեծն Արտաշատ հանդերձ աւանաւք իւրովք. եւ առնուին զանմատոյց ամուրսն՝ զԳառնի քաղաքն, զԱնին, զԱրտագերս եւ զաւանս իւրեանց. զԵրկայնորդսն եւ զԱրխնին եւ զաւանս իւրեանց. զԲարձրաբողն, զԽորանիստն, զԾախանիստն, զանկասկածելի Ողականն, եւ ընդ նոսա եւ զաւանս իւրեանց. զԱրփանեալն, զՎանն աւան, ընդ նմին եւ զաւանսն իւր. զԳռեալն եւ զԿապոյտն, զՈրոտն եւ զՎաշակաշատն:

 6:126 First the great city Artashat with its villages. They took the following inaccessible fortresses: the cities of Garni, Ani, Artagerk, and their villages; Erkaynordk and Arkhni and their villages; Bardzraboḷ, Khoranist, Tsakhanist, the secure Oḷakan, and its villages with it; Arpaneal, the town of Van, and its villages with it; Greal and Kapoyt, Orotn and Vashakashat:

6:127 Զամենեսին զայս իւրաքանչիւր գեղիւք եւ ագարակաւք, զաւրաւք եւ զաւրագլխաւք ի նմին ամի առեալ տապալեցին, եւ ի գերութիւն վարեցին զարս եւ զկանայս ընչիւք եւ ստացուածովք, հանդերձ պատուական գանձիւք եւ նոցին սպասուք:

 6:127 All of these places with each one’s villages and farms, troops and commanders, they captured and destroyed in the same year; they led away into captivity the men and women with their possessions and belongings, their valuable treasures and goods:

6:128 Տապալէին քանդէին զշինուածս նոցա, եւ այրէին կիզուին զտունս պաշտաման կրակի:

 6:128 They destroyed and razed their buildings and burned down the houses of fire-worship:

6:129 Սրբէին զպղծութիւն կռապաշտութեանցն, եւ առնուին զկահ եւ զկազմածս ատրուշանացն, բերէին եւ դնէին ի սուրբ եկեղեցւոջն, եւ ի ձեռն սուրբ քահանայիցն նուիրէին ի սպաս տէրունական սեղանոյն:

 6:129 They cleansed away the impurity of idolatry and removed the furniture and effects of the fire-temples, placing them in the holy churches; through the holy priests they dedicated them to the service of the Lord’s altar:

6:130 Եւ փոխանակ սնոտի պաշտամանցն, զոր տապալեցին յամենայն տեղիս հեթանոսացն, զփրկական խաչն Քրիստոսի կանգնէին, զամենասուրբ սեղանն ուղղէին, եւ զկենդանարար խորհուրդն կատարէին սրբութեամբ. պաշտաւնեայս եւ քահանայս ի տեղւոջն կացուցանէին:

 6:130 In place of the vain pagan cults, which they destroyed everywhere, they set up the saving cross of Christ, they raised the all-holy altar, and reverently celebrated the vivifying Sacrament. They installed deacons and priests in those places:

6:131 Յուսով հաստատեալ խնդայր ամենայն երկիրն առ հասարակ:

 6:131 Sustained by hope, the whole land rejoiced in unison:

6:132 Եւ մինչդեռ յայսմ մեծի առաքինութեան կատարեալ գործէին զգործ նահատակութեանն, երեւէր իմն ի վերայ ամենեցուն աստուածային շնորհք. քանզի առանց հրամանի ի զաւրացն Հայոց, յարեւելից կողմանէ աշխարհին յարձակեցան ոմանք յԱտրպատական աշխարհն, եւ ի տեղիս տեղիս բազում վնաս արարին՝ առնլով եւ աւերելով եւ քանդելով զբազում ատրուշանս:

 6:132 While they were carrying out all this great and virtuous task of heroism, a divine grace appeared over them all. For without orders from the Armenian army, from the eastern part of the country some attacked the land of Atrpatakan and caused much damage in various places, seizing and looting, and razing many fire-temples:

6:133 Իսկ որ ի մեծ ամուրսն անկանէին՝ խաչանշան արարեալ՝ ի վերայ զաւրուն յարձակէին. որ եւ երկու մեծամեծ բերդացն պարիսպքն առանց ուրուք մերձենալոյ անկեալ կործանեցան. մինչեւ ամենայն բնակչաց երկրին զահի հարեալ ի մեծ նշանէն, ինքեանք ինքեանց ձեռաւք զկրակատունսն այրէին. ուրանալով զաւրէնս մոգութեանն՝ խոստովանէին ի սուրբ աւետարանն:

 6:133 Those who attacked the great fortresses fell on the enemy, making the sign of the cross. It even happened that the walls of two tremendous castles collapsed without anyone approaching them, so that all the inhabitants of the land were terrified by the great miracle and themselves with their own hands set fire to the fire-temples; disavowing the religion of magism, they confessed in the Holy Gospel:

6:134 Եւ այլ մեծամեծ աջողութիւնք կատարէին ի ձեռն զաւրականին. քանզի ուր ոչ էր ակնկալութիւն, եթէ զանուն Աստուծոյ ոք յիշեսցէ, արհաւիրք մեծ անկանէին ի վերայ նոցա, եւ ամենայն մարդ պատմէր ընկերի իւրում տեսիլս նորս եւ զարմանալիս:

 6:134 And other tremendous successes were accomplished through the soldiery. For where there was no expectation that anyone would remember the name of God, terrifying shocks befell them and everyone told his neighbor of these unprecedented visions and wonders:

6:135 Սոյնպէս եւ աստեղք ի յերկինս երեւէին յոյժ լուսալիր պայծառացեալ, զոր ոչ ունէին յառաջին բնութեանն:

 6:135 Likewise, the stars in heaven appeared shining with greater brilliance than was their usual nature:

6:136 Եւ ամենայն տղայք աշխարհին իբրեւ զարս պատերազմողս խիզախէին:

 6:136 And all the youths of the land were as bold as mature warriors:

6:137 Եւ ահա յետ աւուրց բազմաց եկն եհաս հազարապետն Աղուանից սուրբ եպիսկոպոսաւ աշխարհին, մեծաւ տագնապաւ փութացուցանէր զզաւրսն ասելով. «Գունդն Պարսից, որ էր ի կողմանս աշխարհին Հոնաց, դարձաւ այսրէն, եկն եմուտ յաշխարհս մեր. եւ բազում եւս եւ այլ այրուձի որ ի դրանէ եկն:

 6:137 Many days later the hazarapet of Albania arrived with the holy bishop of that country, and urgently exhorted the soldiers, saying: “The Persian army which was in the land of the Huns has returned and reached our land, and many more cavalry from the court have also arrived:

6:138 Եւ թող զայս ամենայն, այլ երեք հարեւր մոգ վարդապետ ածեալ ընդ իւրեանս, պառակտեցին զաշխարհն, եւ զոմանս ոմանս յինքեանս արկին, եւ կամէին յեկեղեցին ձեռն արկանել. եւ հրամանաւ թագաւորին ստիպէին զամենեսեան եւ ասէին. «Եթէ կամաւք յանձն առնուք զաւրէնսն, պարգեւս եւ պատիւս գտանէք ի նմանէ, եւ թողութիւն հարկացն յարքունուստ լիցի ձեզ, ապա թէ կամաւք զայդ չառնէք, հրաման ունիմք ի գեաւղս եւ ի քաղաքս շինել ատրուշանս, եւ զվռամական կրակն ի ներքս դնել, եւ կացուցանել մոգս եւ մոգպետս աւրէնսդիր ամենայն աշխարհիդ:

 6:138 In addition to all this, they have brought with them another three hundred magi as teachers; they have created discord in the country and have brought some over to themselves. They desire to lay hands on the church, and at the king’s command they put pressure on everyone, saying: ’If you willingly accept his religion, you will receive gifts and honors from him and you will gain relief of taxes from the treasury. But if you do not do this willingly, we have a command to build fire-temples in villages and towns, to place inside them the fire of Vram, and to appoint magi and chief-magi as arbiters for the entire country:

6:139 Եւ եթէ ստամբակեալ ոք ընդդէմ դարձցի, ինքն մահու պատուհաս ընդունի, եւ կին եւ որդիք այնպիսւոյն անաշխարհիկ եղեալ՝ յարքունիս երթիցեն:

 6:139 And if anybody resists and opposes, he will be punished with death; and the wife and children of such people will be exiled to work the royal estates. ’:

6:140 Իսկ գունդն Հայոց իբրեւ լուաւ զայս գոյժ դառնութեան, ոչ ինչ թուլացեալ լքան ի քաջութենէն. այլ դարձեալ համագունդ ժողով լինէր ամենայն աշխարհին վասն գուժաբեր հրեշտակացն, որ հասին առ նոսա:

 6:140 When the Armenian army heard this bitter news, they were in no way discouraged or weakened in bravery. But there was a gathering of people of the entire country to debate this bad news brought to them by the envoys:

6:141 Եւ միաբան քաջալերս տուեալ՝ արձակեցին զնոսա, զի առ ժամանակ մի զնոսա պատիր խաբէութեամբ կալցեն, զի խափանեսցին ի չար կամացն՝ չձեռնարկել ի սուրբ ուխտ եկեղեցւոյն իւրեանց. եւ ինքեանք զաւրութեամբն Աստուծոյ խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ՝հնարիւք ելս իրացն խնդրէին:

 6:141 Unanimously giving them encouragement, they dismissed them; their purpose was to deal with them (the Persians) deceitfully for a while, so that they might be hindered from their wicked intentions and not lay hand on the holy covenant of their church. With the power of God, they held council, seeking a way out of the problem:

6:142 Յայնմ ժամանակի զմի ոմն ի մեծ նախարարացն ի տոհմէն Գնունեաց՝ Ատոմ, ճեպով առաքեցին յերկիրն Արեւմտից, ցուցանել զայս ամենայն խորհուրդ զչարիմաց թագաւորին Արեւելից, միանգամայն եւ պատմել զիւրեանց քաջութիւն արութեանցն, զոր գործովք կատարեցին՝առ ոտն հարկանելով զհրամանն ահեղ, եւ մեծապէս սատակումնի վերայ մոգացն հասուցանել, խնդրել ի նմանէ աւգնականութիւն սատարութեան, եւ եթէ նա կամեսցի՝նմա իսկ մտանել ի ծառայութիւն:

 6:142 Then they sent in haste one of the great princes of the Gnuni family, Atom, to the West in order to reveal all these evil plans of the malicious king of the East, and at the same time to describe their own brave valor, which they had proved by deeds—by trampling on the fearful order of Yazkert and inflicting great slaughter on the magi—and to seek from him the emperor of the West aid and support, even entering his service should he so wish:

6:143 Եւ այս է պատճէն հրովարտակին, զոր գրեցին առ Թէոդոս կայսր. «ՅՈՎՍԷՓ եպիսկոպոս բազում եպիսկոպոսակցաւք իմովք եւ ամենայն զաւրաւք Հայոց, Վասակ մարզպան եւ Ներշապուհ Ռմբոսեան հանդերձ սպարապետաւս եւ ամենայն մեծամեծ նախարարաւքս առ մեծանունդ Թէոդոս կայսր, բազմասցի ողջոյն մեր առ քեզ եւ ամենայն զաւրաց քոց, որ խաղաղասէր մարդասիրութեամբ ձերով տիրէք ծովու եւ ցամաքի, եւ չիք ոք յերկրաւորացս, որ ձերում անարգել տէրութեանդ ընդդէմ դառնայցէ:

 6:143 This is a copy of the letter which they wrote to the Emperor Theodosius: “The bishop Joseph, with many of my cobishops and the whole Armenian army; Vasak the marzpan and Nershapuh Rmbosean, with the sparapet and all the greatest princes, to the illustrious emperor Theodosius—may our greeting be upon you and all your troops, you who with your peaceful benevolence rule over land and sea; and there is no person on earth who can oppose your irresistible empire:

6:144 Որպէս մեք իսկ ունիմք զանսուտ յիշատակարանսն զառաքինի նախնեացն ձերոց, ունելով զԵւրոպէ՝ անցին եւ տիրեցին եւ Ասիացւոց կողմանցն ի սահմանացն Սէիրայ մինչեւ ի կողմանս Գադերովնի, եւ ոչ ոք գտաւ ստամբակեալ եւ ելանել ըստ ձեռն նոցա:

 6:144 According to our infallible records concerning your courageous ancestors, having occupied Europe they crossed over and also ruled the regions of Asia from the borders of Seir to the limits of Gaderon; and there was no one who rebelled or escaped their control:

6:145 Եւ յայնչափ մեծ իշխանութեան՝ դաստակերտ մեծ եւ սիրելի զՀայոց աշխարհս անուանէին:

 6:145 Within that vast dominion they called Armenia a great and beloved territory:

6:146 Վասն որոյ եւ նախնին մեր Տրդատիոս յիշելով զառաջին սէրն ձեր, որ ի տղայութեան փախուցեալ ի հայրասպան մարդախողխող հաւրեղբարցն իւրոց՝ ապրեալ սնաւ յերկրիդ Յունաց, եւ ի ձէնջ թագաւորեալ տիրէր հայրենի աշխարհիս, սոյնպէս եւ զհաւատսն որ ի Քրիստոս՝ ընկալեալ ի սուրբ եպիսկոպոսապետէն Հռովմայ, լուսաւորեաց զխաւարային կողմանս հիւսիսոյ. զոր եւ այժմ կամին ի մէնջ կորզել հանել խաւարասէր որդիքն արեւելից:

 6:146 For that reason, our ancestor Tiridates remembered your earlier affection: when in his youth he fled from his murderous uncles who had assassinated his father, he lived and was brought up in the land of the Greeks; made king by you, he ruled over his ancestral land. Likewise, having received faith in Christ from the holy archbishop of Rome, he illuminated the benighted regions of the North, which now the darkness-loving sons of the East wish to wrest away from us:

6:147 Եւ մեք ի ձեր քաջութիւն արութեանդ խիզախեալ, էր ինչ, որ ընդդէմ դարձաք նոցա հրամանացն, եւ բազում այն է, որ արդ առաջի պատրաստեալ եմք:

 6:147 Relying on your noble valor, some of their commands we have opposed and many more we are ready to continue opposing:

6:148 Ընտրեցաք զմահ աստուածպաշտութեամբ քան զկեանս ուրացութեամբ. եթէ դուք եւս ի ձեռն առջիք զմեզ, ահա կրկին կենաց դիպեցաք եւ ոչ մի անգամ մահու:

 6:148 We have chosen death in piety rather than life in apostasy. If you extend further help to us, we will have gained a second life and avoided death:

6:149 Եւ եթէ սակաւիկ մի հեղգայք, գուցէ բազում եւ այլոց աշխարհաց հասանիցէ տապ բոցոյ սորա:

 6:149 But if you delay even a little, the heat of their furnace will perhaps reach many other countries:

6:150 Եւ իբրեւ յանդիման եղեն մեծի թագաւորին, եւ ընթերցան զգիր պաղատանաց Հայոց աշխարհին եւ զյիշատակարանս նախնեացն, բազում մատեանք ի մէջ եկեալ ընթերցան, որ զնոյն ուխտ հաստատութեան ի ներքս գտանէին:

 6:150 After they had come into the presence of the great king and had read the supplication of Armenia and the records of their ancestors, many books were introduced and read, in which they found the same firm covenant:
