68:0 ԲԱՆ ԻՆՔՆՈՒՐՈՅՆ ՍԱԿՍ ՅԻՇԱՏԱԿԻ ԱՆՈՒԱՆ ԻՒՐՈՅ:

 68:0 A Separate Discourse Commemorating His ( Yovhannes’s) Name:

68:1 Թագաւորք աստուածասէրք եւ բարեպաշտօնք, իշխանք եւ պէտք եւ հրամանատարք Հայոց, եղբարք մեր եւ առաքեալք եկեղեցւոյ եւ փառք Քրիստոսի՝ աղերս առաջի մատուցանեմ ձեզ զպիտառութիւն զայս բանի: Զի իբրեւ ցուցող հայելի ի միտս անբասիրս սովաւ զձեզ հրաւիրեալ, եւ զյանդուգն եւ զանկարգ ճամարտակելն արտալած արարեալ՝ անպատուհաս ես մնացից յահեղ մրրկէ աստի եւ յահագին ալեացս փրկելոց եւ դիզացելոց եւ կուտակելոց եւ դիմեցելոց ի վերայ Ասքանազեանս գրոհի:

 68:1 God-loving pious kings, princes, leaders and commanders of Armenia, our brethren and apostles of the church, the glory of Christ, I offer you as a gift this useful treatise. With this, which is like a reflecting mirror, I have invited you (to come) to your senses and rejected rash and disorderly boasting so that I may be exempt from this formidable tempest and the huge foaming waves that have risen, swollen and fallen upon the race of Ashkenaz:

68:2 Սարսափեալ զոփացեալ դողացաւ սիրտ իմ, զի տիգօք աչաց խաղաց Տէր ի վերայ մեր սակս անօրէնութեանց մերոց:

 68:2 My heart shivered with terror, shuddered and trembled, for the Lord sharpened his eyes upon us for our iniquity:

68:3 եւ վասն զի ցարդ եւս յարակայեալ անդնդապտոյտ ալեացն յորդութիւնք խորութեանցն եւ ոչ հանդարտեաց, վասն այսորիկ ես բռնադատեցայ գալ յայս եւ առնել տալ տագնապեալ զՊատմութիւնս:

 68:3 Since the eddying waves remained deeply swollen until the present time and did not calm down, I was forced to come here and hastened to have this history prepared:

68:4 Նախ ի կրից աստի զիս փութացուցեալ, որ շուրջ պատեալ պաշարեաց զմեզ. եւ ապա ի հրամանէ թագաւորաց ի վերայ հասելոյ՝ որ զիմս ճմլեալ բաղխեաց զիմաստիցս գործարան եւ հաւանեցոյց ոչ ի՛նչ գոլ ինձ յայսմիկ դանդաղելի:

 68:4 I was at first pressed on by the sufferings that surrounded us and then by the urgent order of the kings that influenced my mind, convincing me not to waver at all in this matter:

68:5 Սակայն ոչ գրաւորական անձայն տառիւք միայն որ ի վեր քան զիս է ձգտումն իրի զմտաւ ինչ ածեալ. այլ բոլորաձայն հնչմամբ հագագասփիւռ ձայնիւ դարուց ի դարս զայս ձեզ աւանդեալ ուղղախոհ իմացուածիւ: Զի մի՛ անհասութիւն ծերունեան զրուցաց այլոց ոմանց վէպս ինչ խարեալ խղճի մտաց կարօտ զձեզ կացուսցէ:

 68:5 Nevertheless, I did not at all consider reaching a goal that was beyond my ability only by writing mute characters; but through the echo of a full-voiced sound reverberating from century to century I bequeath this to you with sound judgement, lest the incomprehensibility (or loss) of ancient narratives make you want epics of certain others with branded conscience:

68:6 այլ զի զաչս արձակեալ յարտադրութիւն բանիս մաքրական մտօք անբաղայապէս՝ ի մասնաւոր ասացելոց աստի տեսցի զկնի եկելոց իւրաքանչիւրոց անցնիւրն զրուցաց ստուգութիւն ըստ ընթերցանութեան հանդիսի բանիս. եւ այս ցայս վայր հերիքասցի:

 68:6 But casting eyes on this treatise with a clear and open mind, each one of the future generations will see from what has been said here in particular the veracity of each and every account as he reads my presentation; and thus far he shall be satisfied:

68:7 Այլ ես այսուհետեւ մաղթանս առաջի ձեզ ընթերցողացդ մատուցից, մի՛ բերիլ ձեզ եւս վերստին յայս տեղի տանջանաց, յորս այժմ առ հասարակ թմբրեցաք ի ծուխ մեղաւորաց:

 68:7 But henceforth I shall offer prayers for you who read (this book) so that you would never again be borne to this place of torments where we have now become universally lethargic in the smoke of sinners:

68:8 Այլ ախորժաբար լսող լինել աղերսալի իմոյս բանից եւ բաղաձայնութեան խրատու՝ լինել ձեզ զաւակ լաւագունի պատարագելոյն Սեթայ եւ գրիլ յորդիս Աստուծոյ. այլ ոչ խառն ընդ անիծեալ եղբայրազրաւն Կայենի զարմից կապիլ ի կնատ եւ ի մեղմեխ եւ ի վայրաքարշ դստերս մարդկան:

 68:8 But (I pray that you) listen willingly to my supplications and advice for unanimity; that you become children of Seth, who was a good gift, and be reckoned among the children of God; that you do not mingle with the base, enticing and vile daughters of men who are of the race of the accursed fratricide Cain:

68:9 Մի՛ ի չար ուղխից սանդարամետին զրահեղեղ սատակմամբ ողողեսջիք՝ որպէս յայնժամ երկնասահան եւ երկրահոսան ջրահեղձոյց մարդիկ Նոյեան դարուն. այլ աւետարանական ուռկանաւ արկելոյ ի ծով զուսպ եւ անփոփ վարուք ժողովել կարթիւք յարքունական կայանս:

 68:9 that you are not inundated by the wicked torrents of the underworld (sandaramet), dying in vain like the men of Noah’s age who were drowned by the waters that descended from heaven and streamed through the earth, but as the evangelical net is cast into the sea, through a disciplined and restrained life you are gathered in the royal fisheries by means of hooks:

68:10 Մի՛ անկանոն կրօնիւք ամբարձջիք ի տանիս նանրութեան, եւ հրացայտ ցոլութեան ծծմբոյ դիւրաշունչ հողմոյ զձեզ պտուտկեալ տոչորիցէ կորստեան կիզմամբն. այլ ելեալք ի Սոդոմայ՝ այլ եւ ի Սեգովրայ, յեւս իմանալի բարձրութիւնն սքանչելապէս լերանցն յաւիտենից թեւակոխեսջիք, ուր պայծառապէսն իսկ բորբոքի ջահ սրբութեան զգուշացելոցն յարթնութեան:

 68:10 I beg you not to climb to the housetop of iniquity with your disorderly conduct nor let the diabolical storm with its sparkling flashes of sulphur whirl you around and set you on fire with a destructive blaze. But leaving Sodom and Segor, soar up to the spiritual height of the wonderful mountains of eternity where a holy torch is brightly ablaze for those who are alert and vigilant:

68:11 Մի՛ խոտորեսջիք յարքունական ի կուռ պողոտայէն յաջ կամ յահեակ՝ թողացուցեալ զկամս ձեր զկնի պատրանաց պատրողին. վասն զի յերկոցունց կողմանց դարանակալէ՛ աւազակաց բազմութիւն, եւ մահ է բաժին անկելոցն ի ձեռս նոցա:

 68:11 Do not go astray, either to the left or right side, from the main road by allowing your will (to follow) the seductions of the deceiver, since a multitude of brigands waits in ambush on both sides (of the highway) and death awaits those who fall into their hands:

68:12 Մի՛ մեղիցէ ձեզ կարծեցեալ արեգակն տունջենային եւ կամ լուսին գիշերոյ դիւամոլար խռովութեամբ, որ մերոյն բնութեանս կրիւք խաբեացն զմեզ եւ խաբէ. այլ զանց արարեալ զփաղաքշական խորհրդովք ախորժից յողդողդելոցն, զի ճշմարիտ արեգակնն արդարութեան ծագեսցի ի սիրտս ձեր սիրովն աստուածայնով:

 68:12 Let neither the sham sun nor the moon harm you by day or night with a diabolical confusion that deceived and deceives us through the passions of our nature. Set aside seductive thoughts about fickle desires so that the true sun of righteousness may rise in your hearts with divine love:

68:13 Մի՛ քրէիքուր վարուց չարութեամբ նաւաբեկեալք՝ ապաշաւեսջիք զուղիղ եւ զճշմարիտ զձեր վարս, եւ կոխածս գռեհաց եղիջիք իբրեւ զաղն անհամեալ. այլ ողջ ամբողջ եւ անխախուտ մնասջիք ի պարսաւադիտէն դրժողէ՝ խնդութեամբ ժամանել ի նաւահանգիստ կենաց:

 68:13 Shipwrecked because of a wicked and impure life, do not regret your straight and correct conduct, nor become the trampled mire in the ways like the salt that lost its taste. But remain perfectly safe and unspoiled by the slanderous violator in order to reach with joy the haven of life:

68:14 Մի՛ զպարծանս հարցն առաքինութեանց ձեզ բաւական վարկեալ եւ ի նոյն ապաստանեալ՝ պղերգութեամբ անձանց ի վիհս խորափիտս ընկղմեսջիք. զի թէ հօր հմտաբար տեղեկութեամբ ղեկավարեալ իցէ, զի՞նչ օգուտ յայնմանէ որդւոց բերցի՝ եթէ ի նաւաբեկութեան կորնչին. Վասն զի ոչ ինչ շահ զհօրն հմտութիւնն կարծեմ լինել որդւոց նաւաբեկութեան:

 68:14 Do not consider pride in ancestral virtues sufficient for you lest by confiding in it you might become negligent of yourselves and sink into abysmal depths. For if the father steered the helm with skill and knowledge, what good will it do to the sons as they perish in a shipwreck? For this reason I do not think that the father’s skill will be of any benefit to the sons’ shipwreck:

68:15 Մի՛ օտարացեալք եղիջիք ի մօրէ, որ վերստին զձեզ ծնաւ նորոգատուր բանիւն կենդանականաւ ի յոյսն կենդանի: Մի՛ խաբիցիք յարգանդէ վրիպեալք կամ թէ մերկացեալք յայնմանէ լուսաւոր եւ փրկական զգեստուն, որով վայելչապէս զգեստաւորեցայք յարգանդէ աւազանին:

 68:15 Do not alienate yourselves from the mother who gave you a new birth into a living hope by the newly given living Word. Do not be deceived by being aborted from the womb, nor strip yourselves naked of that luminous and redeeming garment in which you were properly clad from the womb of the (baptismal) font:

68:16 Մի՛ խօսիցիք ստութիւն՝ զառեալն իբրեւ զչարեալ նանրապէս համարել, եւ ժխտող լինել Որդւոյն սիրելւոյ աստուածական պատգամացն լեռնացելոց. այլ եռանդնասէր սրտի ջերմութեամբ հեռանալ յայնմանէ, որ ինչ վնասակար եւ հակառակ է հոգւոյ, եւ ի բաց զտխրութիւն տարերցս սնոտւոց մերկանալ մաքուր մտօք:

 68:16 Do not speak lies, considering in vain what was taken as not taken, and disavowing the Beloved Son’s divine commands that tower like a mountain. But with the warmth of a devout heart keep away from that which is harmful and hostile to the soul, and with a clear mind cast aside the sadness of the vain elements of this life:

68:17 Այսպէս թերեւս եւ սրովբէականացն եւս յերրեակ դասու խորին խորհուրդս թեւակոխեսջիք եւ դուք, եւ վեցթեւեան երագաշարժ գործեօք իմն զօրհնաբականսն ըստ պիտոյս բաժանեսջիք՝ ոմամբք խուճապելով զսպիլ, ոչ եւս արժանի ըստ որումն վարկեալ եւ ոչ զաչս ի յերկինս ամբառնալ:

 68:17 Thus you also may perhaps soar up to the deep mysteries of even the triple orders of the seraphim, and properly divide the songs of praise with six-winged instruments that move quickly, being startled by some (of the wings) to restrain yourselves from even lifting (your) eyes toward heaven, not considering yourselves worthy of it:

68:18 իսկ այլովք ոմամբք վերշարժիլ ի մշտնջենական փառատրութիւնս ըստ վստահելոցն պարագահութեանց ի պաշտօն աստուածայնոյ փառացն:

 68:18 On the other hand, by certain others you may be stirred up to eternal exultations to worship the glory of God after the entrusted ones round about the throne:

68:19 ապա հանդիսապէս արժանի գտջիք յետ այսմ սուղ ժամադրութեան կենացս մտանել եւ յամպ իմանալի Սինէական լերինն:

 68:19 Then, after the short span of this life, you shall become openly worthy of the glory of even entering the intelligible cloud of Mount Sinai:

68:20 Ոչ ի փորձ հրոյ ի վայր բերեալ ըստ պայմանի խռուոյ յաւուրն ընտրութեան. այլ ամպաչու թեւօք սլացեալք ի վերին Սիովն ի հայցել զտեսութիւն Տեառն: Ոչ վիմով ծերպի զեղչել եւ զյետոյսն միայն տեսանել. այլ զբովանդակ նկարագիր փառացն Հօր դէմ յանդիման նկատել:

 68:20 You shall not be brought down like brushwood to the trial of fire on the day of scrutiny, but with wings that travel in clouds you shall soar up to the upper Sion, seeking to see the Lord. You shall not be thrown into the shade in a crevice of the rock and behold only the backside (or the Lord), but shall look directly at the entire stamp of the glory of the Father:

68:21 Եւ զայժմու փոքր ի շատէ խելամտութեամբս զանց արարեալ՝ ծանօթք եղիջիք պատրաստական վայելչութեանն եւ յայնժամ գիտասջիք զնա որպէս եւ նայն ծանեաւ զձեզ:

 68:21 Leaving aside the somewhat trivial knowledge of the present, you shall acquaint yourselves with the splendor that is ready at hand; and then you shall know Him as He knew you:

68:22 Արդ՝ այսքան բան ձեզ խրատու յինէն բաւականասցի: Բայց անարժանս ես եւ հեղգապաշաւս Յովհաննէս՝ նուաստ Կաթողիկոս Հայոց, աղաչանս առաջի մատուցանեմ ընթերցողացդ ձեզ եւ լսողաց բանի Պատմութեանս՝ արժանի յիշատակի զիմս վարկանել անուն ի մաքրամատոյց նուիրական աղօթս ձեր. զի երկաքանչիւրոցս՝ ինձ եւ ձեզ, թերեւս ի Տեառնէ տացի վարձս հատուցման յետնումն աւուր այցելութեան նորա. որ է օրհնեալ միշտ եւ փառաւորեալ յամենայն արարածոց յաւիտենից յաւիտեանս. ամէն:

 68:22 Now, let this word of advice from me suffice you. But I, the unworthy and wretched Yovhannes, humbly katholikos of Armenia, beg you who read and listen to the message of this history to deem my name worthy of remembrance in your holy and pious prayers. For on the last day of His visitation both you and I may perhaps receive our remuneration from the Lord Who is always blessed and glorified by all the creatures to the ages and ages. Amen:
