43:0 Յաղագս հակառակ թագաւորելոյն Գագկայ Արծրունւոյ, որ եղեւ պատճառ խռովութեան մեծի:

 43:0 The Counter rule of Gagik Arcruni as King, and the Great Confusion He Caused:

43:1 Զայսու ժամանակաւ գլխաւոր եւ գահերէց իշխանն Գագիկ Արծրունի աղերսահայց յարքայէ Սմբատայ լեալ՝ առ ինքն զքաղաքն Նախջաւան խոկայր դարձուցանել, իբր թէ ի հաւու եւ ի հօրէ նոցունց իսկ տան եւ ազգի պատշաճեալ՝ եւ նուաճեալ ունէր զնա. եւ զրկութիւն իւր զորոշումն քաղաքին առի յիւրմէ վարկանէր:

 43:1 At this time, the chief gaherec’ prince Gagik Arcruni begged king Smbat to return to him the city of Naxjawan, which had presumably been in the possession of his house and family ever since his grandfather and father, since he considered the loss of the city a personal grief:

43:2 Իսկ արքայ վասն զի յառաջագոյն տուեալ էր ձիրս պարգեւաց Սմբատայ իշխանին Սիսականի, որ արտաքս բերէր միշտ զինքն յընդունայնակարծ հպարտութենէ եւ մտերմական ծառայութեամբ կատարէր զբոլոր սպասահարկութիւն նորա՝ ոչ կամեցաւ զձեռագիրն իւր ի ձեռաց իշխանին յափշտակել եւ ոչ զընծայեալսն նմա մեծարանս յանարգանս արհամարհանաց դարձուցանել:

 43:2 Nevertheless, as the king had previously given the city as a gift to prince Smbat of Sisakan, who was always devoid of the vanity of pride, and carried out all of his duties in faithful servitude, he did not wish to take back from the prince what he had given, nor make meaningless the honors that he had bestowed on him:

43:3 Ընդ որ յաւէտ իմն իշխանին Գագկայ դժգմեալ՝ դրժողութեամբ չարահաւակ առ արքայ լինէր. եւ ապա բազում նուէրս ընծայից եւ պատարագաց պատրաստեալ՝ չուէր գնայր առ ոստիկանն Յուսուփ ի Պարսս: Եւ առաջի մատուցեալ զխորհրդականն իւր ընծայս՝ զզրկանաց ամբաստանութեան իւրոյ բան բարձրաբարբառ զօրացուցանէր զարքայէ:

 43:3 Being extremely annoyed at this, prince Gagik insidiously made malicious misrepresentations about the king. Thereupon, getting ready many gifts and prizes, he set forth to go to the ostikan Yusuf in Persia, and having offered him the intended gifts, he then brought strong charges against the king for depriving him of his rights:

43:4 Իսկ նորա ախորժաբար ընկալեալ՝ տայր նմա թագ արքայական եւ պատիւս եւ պարգեւս արքունականս, ի քակտումն միաբանութեան նոցա զայն հնարեալ գործել, զի դիւրադաւ լիցին այնուհետեւ երկաքանչիւրքն առ ի նմանէ դրժելոյ:

 43:4 Yusuf received him with joy, and gave him a royal crown, as well as honors and gifts befitting royalty, whereby he schemed to dissolve the unanimity between (Smbat and Gagik), so that he could easily deceive each one separately:

43:5 Սակայն ի ծածուկ իմն ըստ սողնոց սպրդեալ իբր ի ծերպս վիմաց՝ ոչ բերէր առժամայն ի զգայութիւն զգործեցեալ իրակութիւնն. բայց իբրեւ եկն թագակերպեալ իշխանն Գագիկ յաշխարհ իւրոյ տէրութեանն՝ ոչ սակաւ շփոթ տրտմութեան առ հասարակ զամենեքումբք զեղոյր. վասն զի իրազգացք լինէին խաւարասէր խորհրդոց ոստիկանին, որ զկորստական դուռն բանալ հանդերձեալ էր, զոր ոչ այլ ումեք քան թէ Աստուծոյ գոյր կարողութիւն փակել զնա:

 43:5 Thereafter, like reptiles that stealthily crawl into the cavities of rocks, he did not reveal the fait accompli immediately. But when prince Gagik, bearing something like a crown, returned to his domain, great confusion and grief came upon everyone. For they perceived the shady schemes of the ostikan, who was about to open the gates of destruction, which no one but God could close:

43:6 Սակայն արքայ ծննդագործեալ ի միտս իւր՝ բարեաւն յաղթել չարին, ոչ կասեցուցանէր հատուցանել նմա զսակ սովորական ծառայութեանն՝ մինչեւ սպառ սպուռ մերկացաւ չարութիւն նորա:

 43:6 Notwithstanding these, the king conceived the idea of vanquishing the evil with kindness. He did not terminate the payment of the customary taxes of servitude, until Yusuf’s wickedness was completely exposed:

43:7 Իսկ արդ իբրեւ բացաւ պատրուակն՝ զեկուցաւ մեզ մռմռումն եւ սպառնութիւնն վայրագն գազանի Հագարացւոյն, ըստ բարոյականի կամեցողի արքային Սմբատայ եւ այլոց եւս նախարարացն սադրելոյ, դէմ եդեալ ես տարադէմ գնացի ի Պարսս Ատրպատականի առ ոստիկանն դառնացող ընծայիւք եւ պատարագօք բազմօք յարքունի թանգարանաց երեւելի ոսկեճամուկ զգեստուք եւ ի նկարակերտ կանանց ոստայնանկութեանց բազում բազմականս կազմեալ, եւ բազում ձիս եւ ջորիս ի զարդս եւ ի զէնս յարդարեալ, այլ եւ գանձս ոսկւոյ եւ արծաթոյ:

 43:7 But when the veil (of secrecy) was drawn aside, and we became aware of the raging threats of the barbaric Hagarite beast, then in compliance with the advice of king Smbat, who was desirous of good conduct, and the other naxarars, I set out, and went to Atrpatakan in Persia, to the embittered ostikan with numerous gifts and prizes from the royal treasuries, namely valuable gold-embroidered robes, and many cushions, which were the products of the colorful embroidery of women, as well as many horses, mules decked with ornaments and armor, and also treasures of gold and silver:

43:8 Ոչ միայն զայսոսիկ՝ այլ ի տանէ սրբարանաց մերոց ըստ ձեռին բաւականի ընդ իս առեալ տանէի նմա ի նպաստ օժտութեան, զի թերեւս նախ քան զբղխումն թունից նորա եւ զխառատումն քարանց եկեղեցւոյ սրբոյ եւ զկորստական գերչութիւն ժողովրդոց Քրիստոսի՝ մարթացից հետի աղագս ինչ խաղաղութեան առ ի նմանէ գտանել, զի մի՛ սպառ սպուռ մայր Սիոն ըստ նմանութեան մօր անզաւակեսցի յորդւոց իւրոց:

 43:8 Besides these, I also took with me an additional gift that I could afford from the sacred repository of our house, so that somehow I might be able to come to terms of peace with him, before he poured his poison, laid desolate the stones of the holy church and took captive the people of Christ, and prevented Mother Sion from being deprived of her children:

43:9 Եւ թէպէտ եւ ի սկզբան բարով իմն ընկալեալ եւ արքունական պատուով եւ պաշտամամբ լաւագունիւ առ ի նմանէ մեծարեցայ, եւ յանձն եւս առեալ ամենայն իրօք զհաշտութիւն աշխարհի շնորհել եւ արքայի զխաղաղութեան կեանս. սակայն կարծեմ ի սադրելոյ նմա ի մերոց աստի պատճառս առեալ զընդունայնակարծ հպարտութիւն ապիրատութեան՝ ոչ թերեւս ըստ յառաջակայ բանիցն զխորհուրդն հարթութեամբ հաւասարէր:

 43:9 Although at first he received me cordially, honored me with royal dignity and great respect, and also agreed to make peace in the land in every respect, as well as leave the king in peace, yet, I suspect that due to the intrigues of our own countrymen against him found reason to cherish his vain and insolent arrogance, so that his thoughts were not in agreement with his present statements:

43:10 Եւ այնուհետեւ մահացու խարդախութեամբ վտարանդեալ՝ ըմբռնէր զիս եւ ի դիպահոջ բերեալ ի խաւարչտին տեղւոջ եւ շրջապատեալ բազում պահնակօք, եւ դատափետ աղաղակն զիս պաշարեալ՝ յապուշ իմն զիս կացուցանէր:

 43:10 Thereafter, alienated by fatal perfidy, he seized me and confined me in a dark dungeon, which was surrounded by numerous guards, whose overwhelming uproar surrounded and stupefied me:

43:11 Արդ՝ մինչդեռ այսպէս շարժեցեալ գայր ի վերայ իմ ընդունայնակարծ հպարտութիւն ոստիկանին, յանկարծակի զօրէն իմն օդապարիկ թռչնոյ գայր հասանէր առ նա մարզպանն Հայոց Գուրգէն՝ եղբայր թագաւորեցելոյն Գագկայ, անփորձ եւ անկիրթ մտօք համոզել զոստիկանն վասն յաշխարհս մեր գալոյ եւ ելանելոյ: Եւ ապա կորովութեամբ կշռեալ զերկրպագութիւն իւր նմա, եւ ի նմանէն ընկալեալ զպարտսն պատուին պայմանի՝ դառնայ անդրէն, հրաւիրակ յոստիկանէն առաքեալ եղբօրն իւրում գալ առ նա:

 43:11 While the vain arrogance of the ostikan came out thus against me, suddenly, like a flying bird there arrived Gurgen, the marzpan of Armenia and brother of the crown-bearer Gagik. Out of inexperience and ignorance, he tried to persuade the ostikan to march upon our land. Then, prostrating himself before him in a cleverly calculated manner, he offered him gifts, and received from him credit befitting his position. From there he returned with the invitation of the ostikan asking his brother to come and visit him:

43:12 Իսկ յետ ամսոց ինչ ապա գայ հասանէ թագաւորն Գագիկ՝ ըստ խոստման բանիցն եւ զգործ կատարեալ եւ ըստ վարժից իմն եւ հրահանգաց կրթութեան զպարտս մտերմական սակին վճարեալ, եւ ի լիապատար թանգարանաց իմն նմա ընծայաբերեալ. ամենայն պատգամք բանի խորհրդոց նոցա առ իրեարս այս եւեթ գտանէր - հորդել յարդարել զչու ճանապարհին ի Հայս եւ առ հասարակ զիրերաց զվրէժ խնդրել յարքայէն Սմբատայ:

 43:12 After a few months, in accordance with his promise king Gagik came, and carried out his transactions. He paid the tribute faithfully, as custom and regulation demands, and presented Yusuf with gifts from his copious treasures. All the decisions from their discussions concerned one thing only, namely to make preparations for their expedition into Armenia, and exact vengeance on king Smbat on behalf of one another:

43:13 Ոչ իմացեալ, եթէ հուր հրդեհեալ յոր կողմ եւ կարէ նիւթ լուցկեաց գտանել՝ անաչառապէս ճարակի յայրել եւ յապականել: Եւ ապա կրկին թագիւ առ ի նմանէ պսակեալ եւ այլ եւս պատուասիրութեամբ մեծարեալ՝ դառնայ, հանդերձեալ զինքն ի կարապետութիւն գալստեան ոստիկանին ի Հայս:

 43:13 Gagik did not realize that a blazing fire would spread in whatever direction it might find combustible material, and would devour and ravish everything without discrimination. He was once again crowned by Yusuf, and also exalted with honors, and returned home to make the preliminary preparations for the arrival of the ostikan in Armenia:

43:14 Բայց ես ակնակառոյց իմն ի գալուստ թագաւորին Գագկայ լինէի, զի թերեւս ի սադրելոյ նորա լուծումն ինձ ի կապարանէն լինիցի՝ որպէս եւ քրիստոնէական պարտն պահանջէ. այլ ակնկալութեան ոչ հանդիպեալ՝ այլ եւս չարաչար ըստ մեղաց իմոց կապեցայ:

 43:14 But I had my eyes set on the arrival of king Gagik, because I hoped that somehow he might, as his Christian duty, help me to be released from my confinement. But my expectations were not fulfilled and I was subjected to more severe incarceration because of my sins:

43:15 Իսկ իբրեւ գարնանային հարաւահողմ զձմերայնոյն ժամանակ ցրտութեանն ի բաց մերկանայր, ապա ոստիկանն գումարտակ զօրու բազմի կազմեալ՝ չուեալ խաղայ գայ հասանէ յաշխարհ մեր, անհաշտ խռովութեամբ սրտին մռմռեալ՝ զկնի իւրեւ զիս կապանօք տանելով:

 43:15 But when the fresh breezes from the south melted the frost of winter, the ostikan drew up a large army, and with irreconcilable mischief in his heart, set forth and came to our land, where I followed him in fetters:

43:16 Եւ ապա դիմեալ հասեալ ի Նախջաւան քաղաք, եւ անդ աւուրս ինչ զետեղեալ՝ մինչեւ կարապետքն հրաւիրեալք՝ Գագիկ եւ Գուրգէն, գային հասանէին եւ գունդք գունդք լինէին:

 43:16 After he had reached the city of Naxjawan, he remained there for a few days, until Gagik and Gurgen, his forerunners, who had been invited to come, arrived, and they marshalled the army into battalions:

43:17 Ապա զօրէն իմն հրոսակաց դիմէ ելանէ նախ զկողմամբք Սիւնեաց աշխարհին:

 43:17 Then, like brigands he turned upon the region of the province of Siwnik’:

43:18 Իսկ գահերէց գլխաւոր իշխանն Սիւնեաց համազուն եղբարբքն իւրով եւ համագունդ զօրօք աճապարեալ ունէին զանցս մտիցն եւ զկիրճս ճանապարհացն արիական քաջութեամբ ըստ հոյակապ անուանակիր հռչակութեանն՝ զէն ի վեր առեալ, առնազէն վառեալ եւ զբազումս թաւալգլոր խաղացուցանէին:

 43:18 The chief gaherec’ prince of Siwnik’, accompanied by his brothers and all of his forces, made haste to hold the passes and defiles on the highways with manliness befitting their well-renowned fame. Buckling on their armor they raised their arms against him and cut down many of the enemy:

43:19 Բայց վասն զի այցելութիւնն Աստուծոյ անտես արար զնոսա՝ ոչ զօրեցին զօրաւոր կատաղութեանցն թշնամեաց հերքել զնոսա. այլ փախստեայ յամուրս քարանձաւաց եւ ի ծործորս լերանց բարձանց անկանէին:

 43:19 But as they had been forsaken by the providence of God, they could not check the mighty rage of the enemy, and took refuge in the fastnesses of caverns and in the glens of lofty mountains:

43:20 Իսկ անօրէնն ընդ կրունկն ի նոցանէ դարձեալ, զորս միանգամայն գտանէր յաշխարհէն փախստէից տեռազերծեալ եւ մնացեալ յետկոյս՝ զոմանս ճարակ սրոյ տային, եւ զայլս ոմանս ի գերութիւն վտարանդեալ:

 43:20 The impious ostikan turned back, and coming upon the fugitives who had been despoiled or left behind, he put some to the sword and took the remaining captive:

43:21 Եւ այս լինէր յաւուրս տօնի մեծի պասեքի Զատկաց յերեքհարիւրերորդի յիսներորդի ութերորդի շրջագայութեան Թորգոմեանս համարոյ:

 43:21 These events took place during the great paschal feast of Easter, on the three hundred fifty eighth revolution of the Armenian (T’orgomian) [A.D. 909/910] era:

43:22 Իսկ ոստիկանն իբրեւ աւուրս երկոտասան անդ երեկօթս արարեալ՝ անցեալ գնայր զարեւելից հիւսիսով ի մայրաքաղաքն Դվին:

 43:22 After remaining there for twelve days, the ostikan proceeded to march to the capital city of Dvin from a northeasterly direction:

43:23 Եւ անդ ապա զետղ առեալ յեզր գետոյն Երասխայ՝ վաղվաղակի գայր հասանէր առ նա տէրն Սիւնեաց՝ Սուփան, անձնատուր լինելով ի սպասաւորութիւն ոստիկանին:

 43:23 Here he halted along the bank of the River Erasx. Soon Supan, the lord of Siwnik’ arrived and submitted to the ostikan:

43:24 Ընդ որ յաւէտ իմն սխրացեալ՝ եւս քան զեւս զօրանայր ի գրգռութիւն չարութեան ընդ արքայի:

 43:24 Being greatly amazed by this, Yusuf became more vehement than ever in his wicked wrath against the king:

43:25 Եւ ապա ի խաբէութիւն մտաց զինքն զինեալ՝ առաքէ առ արքայ Սմբատ, զի թէ բոլորապէս զսակ ամին հատուսցէ նմա, զխաղաղութեան պայման անշուշտ նմա պարգեւեալ՝ անցեալ գնասցէ:

 43:25 Subsequently, arming himself with devious tricks, he sent (envoys) to king Smbat, (and demanded from him) the total payment of the tribute of that year in return for positive terms of peace and his own departure:

43:26 Իսկ նա թէպէտ եւ գիտէր ոչ ուրախ լինել ի բանս պատգամաց խաւարասէր թշնամւոյն. սակայն ի մեղադրութենէ աստուածայնոց եւ մարդկայնոցս արտաքս զինքն որցեալ՝ տայր վաղվաղակի զխնդիրն իբրեւ կշիռս վաթսուն հազար դահեկանաց: Զոր իբրեւ առն ընկալաւ, իսկ եւ իսկ զհետ երթեալ ճեպէր Սմբատայ՝ մինչեւ յաշխարհ Վրաց տարեալ մղեալ հանեալ զնա, մինչեւ անկանէր մերձ յանմատչելի յամուրսն Կղարջաց:

 43:26 Although Smbat knew that the demands of the stealthful enemy gave cause for no joy, in order to save himself from the reproach of God and men, he immediately complied with his demands and paid approximately sixty thousand dahekans. Upon receiving this, the ostikan immediately began to pursue Smbat as far as Iberia, until the latter took refuge in the inaccessible fastnesses of Kgharjk’:

43:27 Իսկ զիս արգելեալ ի քաղաքին: Դվին ի մետաղս բանտից եւ երկաթի կապարանաց՝ կրեցի այնուհետեւ ի դահճաց անտի մահահոտ իմն լուտանօք գանս եւ բանտս եւ գելարանս եւ արգելարանս ի խաւարչտին տեղւոջ եւ յանձուկ վայրս. այլ եւ ի վիրապս եւ ի վիհս խորոց ընկեցայ սաստիկ եւ դառն կտտանօք:

 43:27 On the other hand he incarcerated me in the city of Dvin, behind iron bars and in fetters. Thenceforth I was subjected to beating, confinement, the rack and incarceration in dark and narrow places by my executioners whose insults bore the stench of death. Also I was cast into the depths of pits and dungeons which I suffered in bitter agony:

43:28 Եւ պահապանացն սաստիկ աղաղակն եւ ճուչն դատափետ միշտ ոչ հեռացեալ հասանէր ի լսելեաց իմոց յերեկոյէ մինչեւ ցառաւօտն, եւ սակս այնորիկ բարձեալ էր յինէն նինջ արտեւանաց եւ հանգիստ իրանաց իմոց:

 43:28 From evening until dawn, the terrible clamor and the overwhelming uproar of the guards never ceased to bother me, and because of that I could not sleep and rest my body:
