2:26 Թէպէտ եւ ընդ ամենայն ազգս առնէր զանկարգութիւնս զայս, առաւել ընդ Հայոց աշխարհին մարտնչէր. քանզի տեսանէր զնոսա ջերմագոյնս յաստուածպաշտութեան, մանաւանդ որք էին յազգէ նախարարացն Հայոց, եւ անմեղութեամբ ունէին զսուրբ քարոզութիւն առաքելոցն եւ զմարգարէից:

 2:26 Although he worked this confusion among all nations, he especially strove against the land of Armenia. For he saw that they were very ardent in their piety, especially those of the Armenian nobility, and they sincerely observed the holy preaching of the apostles and prophets:

2:27 Պատրէր զոմանս ի նոցանէ ոսկւով եւ արծաթով, եւ զբազումս այլով եւս առատ պարգեւաւք. իսկ զոմանս ագարակաւք եւ մեծամեծ գեղաւք, զոմանս պատուովք եւ իշխանութեամբք մեծամեծաւք:

 2:27 He deceived some of them with gold and silver, and many with other liberal gifts—some with estates and large villages, some with honors and great principalities:

2:28 Եւ այլ եւս սնոտի յոյս ոգւոց առաջին դնէր. եւ այսպէս հրապուրէր եւ յորդորէր հանապազ. «Եթէ միայն, ասէ, զաւրէնս մոգութեան յանձին կալջիք, եւ զձեր մոլորութիւնդ սրտի մտաւք դարձուսջիք ի ճշմարտութիւն երեւելի մերոց դից աւրինացս, ի մեծութիւնս եւ յաւագութիւնս հասուցից հաւասար իմոյ սիրելի նախարարացս, եւ առաւել եւս զանցուցից:

 2:28 And still further vain hopes he offered to their souls. In this way he was continuously enticing and exhorting: “If only, he said, you accept the religion of magism and sincerely convert your error to the splendid truth of the religion of our gods, I shall make you the equal of my beloved nobles in grandeur and in dignity, and shall even make you surpass them:

2:29 Եւ այսպէս կեղծաւորութեամբ խոնարհեցուցանէր զինքն առ ամենեսեան, խաւսելով ընդ նոսա ի պատճառս սիրոյ, զի խորամանկութեամբ որսալ մարթասցէ զնոսա ըստ առաջին խորհրդականացն խրատուց:

 2:29 In such fashion he deceitfully humbled himself before all, speaking with them on the pretext of love, but hypocritically so that he might be able to seduce them according to the former advice of his counselors:

2:30 Եւ զայս առնէր սկսեալ ի չորրորդ ամէն մինչեւ մետասաներորդ ամն իւրոյ տէրութեանն:

 2:30 Thus, he acted, beginning from the fourth year of his reign up to the eleventh:

2:31 Եւ իբրեւ ետես եթէ ոչինչ յարգեցաւ ծածուկ հնարագիտութիւնն, այլ ընդդէմքն յոլովագոյն գործէին, քանզի տեսանէր զքրիստոնէութիւն, որ աւր քան զաւր յորդեալ տարածանէր ընդ ամենայն կողմանս հեռաւոր ճանապարհին ընդ որ ինքն անցանէր, սկսաւ հաշել եւ մաշել եւ հառաչելով յոգւոց հանել:

 2:31 However, when he saw that his secret cunning had been in no way effective but that his opponents waxed the greater—for he saw Christianity daily increasing and spreading throughout all the regions of the distant road through which he was passing—he began to languish, to waste away, and to lose his spirits from sighing:

2:32 Յայտնեաց ակամայ զծածուկ խորհուրդսն. ետ հրաման բարձր բարբառով եւ ասէ. «Ամենայն ազգ եւ լեզուք՝ որ են ընդ իմով իշխանութեամբ՝ դադարեսցեն յիւրաքանչիւր մոլոր աւրինաց, եւ միայնոյ եկեսցեն յերկրպագութիւն արեգական, զոհս մատուցանելով եւ աստուած անուանելով, եւ սպաս ունելով կրակի. եւ ի վերայ այսր ամենայնի եւ զմոգութեան աւրէնս կատարելով, զի մի՛ ինչ ամենեւին պակաս առնիցեն:

 2:32 He unwittingly revealed his secret plans. He gave a public command: “Let every nation and language under my authority abandon each one’s erring religion and only cleave to the worship of the sun, offering sacrifices and calling it god, and serving the fire. In addition to all this, let them fulfill the religion of magism and be negligent in nothing:

2:33 Զայս ասելով քարոզ կարդայր ի մեծի կարաւանին, եւ պատուէր սաստիւ ի վերայ դնէր ամենեցուն. եւ դեսպանս ստիպաւ արձակէր յամենայն ազգս հեռաւորս, զդոյն պատուէր հրամանի առ ամենեսեան արկանէր:

 2:33 These words a herald proclaimed in the great camp, and he imposed strict injunctions on everyone. He also hastily dispatched messengers to all the distant nations, and imposed the same orders on them all:

2:34 Արդ ի սկզբան երկոտասաներորդ ամի թագաւորութեան իւրոյ գունդ կազմէր անհամար բազմութեամբ, յարձակեալ հասանէր յերկիրն Իտաղական:

 2:34 Then at the beginning of the twelfth year of his reign, he gathered a force infinite in multitude and attacked the land of the Tetals:

2:35 Զայս տեսեալ թագաւորին Քուշանաց՝ ոչ հանդուրժէր ելանել ընդ առաջ նորա պատերազմաւ. այլ խոյս տուեալ ի կողմանս ամուր անապատին, թագստեամբ ապրէր հանդերձ ամենայն զաւրաւքն իւրովք:

 2:35 When the king of the Kushans saw this, unable to oppose him in battle he retreated to the regions of the impregnable desert and lived in hiding with all his troops:

2:36 Իսկ սա ասպատակ արձակէր գաւառաց, տեղեաց, վայրաց. առնոյր զբազում բերդս եւ զքաղաքս, եւ կուտէր զգերին, զառ եւ զապուռ եւ զաւար, ածէր հասուցանէր յերկիր իւրոյ տէրութեանն:

 2:36 But the Persian king assailed his provinces, regions and lands, captured many fortresses and cities, amassed captives, booty, and plunder, and brought them to his own empire:

2:37 Եւ անդ այնուհետեւ յընդունայն եղեալ ի նոյն խորհուրդս՝ հաստատէր ի կարծիս մոլորութեան, ասելով ցպաշտաւնեայս ամբարշտութեանն. «Զի՞նչ հատուսցուք մեք աստուածոցն փոխանակ այս մեծի յաղթութեանս, որ ոչ ոք կարաց ելանել ընդդէմ մեր պատերազմաւ:

 2:37 Then, still engaged in the same vain plans, he was strengthened in his erring intention and said to his impious ministers: “With what shall we repay the gods for this great victory, in which no one was able to oppose us in battle:

2:38 Յայնմ ժամանակի առ հասարակ մոգք եւ քաւդեայք բարձին զձայնս իւրեանց միաբան եւ ասեն. «Աստուածքն որ ետուն քեզ զտէրութիւն եւ զյաղթութիւն ի վերայ թշնամեաց քոց, ոչ ինչ են կարաւտ խնդրել ի քէն յերեւելի պատուականացս, այլ զի բարձցես զամենայն ուսմունս մոլորութեան մարդկան, եւ ի մի դարձուսցես աւրէնս զրադաշտական պատուիրանին:

 2:38 Then in unison the magi and astrologers raised their voices and together note: “The gods who gave you empire and victory over your enemies have no need to seek visible honors from you, but they wish that you remove all the erroneous teachings of men and bring them to the single honorable Zoroastrian religion:

2:39 Հաճոյ թուէր բանն առաջի թագաւորին եւ ամենայն մեծամեծացն, մանաւանդ որ էին առաջակայք աւրինացն:

 2:39 This statement seemed pleasing to the king and all the magnates, especially to those foremost in their religion:

2:40 Խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ յաղթէր խրատն:

 2:40 When council had been held, this opinion prevailed:

2:41 Անդէն ի ներքոյ Պահ դրանն արգելոյր զբազմութիւն այրուձիոյն Հայոց եւ զՎրաց եւ զԱղուանից, եւ զամենեցուն՝ որ էին հաւատացեալ ի սուրբ աւետարանն Քրիստոսի:

 2:41 Then he held within the Pass the host of cavalry of the Armenians, Georgians, Albanians, and of all who believed in the holy Gospel of Christ:

2:42 Եւ հրաման սաստիւ դռնապանացն առնէին, եթէ որ յարեւելս առ մեզ գայցէ՝ թողցեն, իսկ յարեւելից յարեւմուտս անանց լիցի ճանապարհ:

 2:42 The garrison of the Pass was given strict instructions to allow through those who were coming eastward to us, but to block the way for those going from the East to the West:

2:43 Եւ իբրեւ արգել եւ փակեաց զնոսա յամուր եւ յանել գառագիղն, - եւ յիրաւի ասացի ամուր եւ անել, քանզի չիք անդ տեղի փախստի եւ թաքստի, վասն զի շուրջանակի թշնամիք են բնակեալ, - յայնմ ժամանակի ձեռն արկանէր ի նոսա, եւ մեծաւ չարչարանաւք եւ պէսպէս տանջանաւք վատթարէր զբազումս ի նոցանէ, եւ ստիպէր ուրանալ զճշմարիտն աստուած, եւ խոստովանել զերեւելի տարերս:

 2:43 When he had restrained and confined them in this secure and inescapable prison—and in truth I said secure and inescapable, for there was no place to flee or hide because the enemy dwelt all around—then he laid hands on them and by means of severe tortures and various torments maltreated many of them and pressed them to deny the true God and confess the visible elements:

2:44 Իսկ զաւրականքն առ հասարակ գեղեցիկ խորհրդով, քաջապէս զաւրութեամբ միաբան աղաղակէին եւ ասէին. «Վկայ են մեզ երկինք եւ երկիր, որ ոչ երբէք հեղգացեալ եմք յարքունի վաստակս, եւ ոչ խառնեալ վատութիւն ընդ արութիւն քաջութեան. ի զուր եւ անողորմ են հարուածքս ի վերայ մեր:

 2:44 But the soldiers in unison, with noble minds, bravely and forcefully cried out together saying: “Heaven and earth are witnesses to us that we were never tardy in the king’s service, nor did we ever mingle cowardice with our noble valor. These inflictions on us are without reason and merciless:

2:45 Եւ բազմանայր գոչումն աղաղակի նոցա, մինչեւ ինքնին թագաւորն ականատես լինէր իրացն յանդիմանութեան, եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի երդմամբ հաստատէր եւ ասէր. «Ոչ թողացուցից ձեզ, մինչեւ կատարեսջիք զամենայն կամս հրամանաց իմոց:

 2:45 And the noise of their complaint increased until the king himself with his own eyes saw their denunciation of their treatment, but he immediately affirmed with an oath: “I shall not let you go until you have accomplished all the intent of my orders:

2:46 Եւ ահա իշխանութիւն առեալ չարասէր սպասաւորացն, զի զչորս զինուորսն ի բուն աւագացն մատուսցեն ի փորձութիւն տանջանացն:

 2:46 So, his malicious servants received authority to put four soldiers from the aristocracy to torture:

2:47 Եւ զառաջեաւ դատեալ բազում հարուածովք, նովին կապանաւք անցուցին ի տեղիս արգելանին:

 2:47 First, they condemned them to many torments, then imprisoned them in the same bonds:

2:48 Իսկ այլոցն խաբէութեամբ առ ժամանակ մի թողութիւն արարեալ, եւ զամենայն վնասուն պատճառս արկանէր զկապելովքն. եւ զայս առնէր սատանայական խրատուն:

 2:48 But the others he deceitfully left alone for a while, throwing the blame for all the harm on those imprisoned. This he did by the advice of Satan:

2:49 Եւ յետ երկոտասան աւուրս հրաման տայր ընթրիս գործել առատութեամբ եւ աւելի քան զաւուրց սովորութիւն, եւ կոչէր զբազումս ի զինուորական քրիստոնէիցն:

 2:49 Twelve days later he commanded a banquet to be given, more liberally than the daily custom, and he summoned many of the Christian soldiers:

2:50 Եւ ի ժամ գահուն պատրաստութեան զիւրաքանչիւր տեղի շնորհէր նոցա զբազմականին. եւ սիրով խոնարհութեամբ խաւսէր ընդ նոսա ըստ առաջնում կարգին, զի թերեւս հաւանեսցին ուտել զմիս զոհեալ, զոր ոչ էր երբէք աւրէն ուտել քրիստոնէից:

 2:50 When they were ready to take their seats, he granted a place at the table to each one of them; he conversed with them in a friendly and gentle way in accordance with his former manner so that perhaps they might be persuaded to eat sacrificial meat, which had never been lawful for Christians to eat:
