63:0 Յաղագս ապստամբութեան Ամրամայ իշխանին, եւ պարտելոյ ի նմանէ Աշոտոյ շահնշահի:

 63:0 The Rebellion of Prince Amram, and the Defeat of the Shahanshah Ashot:

63:1 Յետ այսց եղելոց եւ գործեցելոց իրաց՝ դարձեալ անտի Շահաննշահ կոչեցեալ գայ հասանէ յՈւտի գաւառ. եւ անդ ապա զնուաճեալսն ընդ ինքեամբ զաղխատրոյզն բանիւք համոզեալ, եւ եթէ ոք սիրէր զայտումն խորհրդոց ապիրատութեան՝ նշմարէր զայն. եւ որպէս սանձիւք ոմամբք բարեզգեաց բանիւք ի բաց ճնշեալ զխեցբեկագոյն բարս նոցա՝ ածէր ընդ ինքեամբ ի հաստատուն խորհուրդս:

 63:1 After the above events had taken place, the shahanshah arrived once again at the province of Uti, and admonished with harsh words those whom he had subordinated. If there were people who entertained arrogant thoughts, he took note and curbing their barbarous mores by means of well-suited words as if they were reins, turned them to positive thoughts:

63:2 Եւ ապա զօր ի նոցանէ գումարեալ՝ չուէր գնայր երթեալ հասանէր ի կողմ Կոտայս գաւառի. եւ իսկ եւ իսկ հրովարտակ յառաջընթաց անտի առաքէր առ միւս եւս կոչեցեալն Աշոտ, որ թագաւորեալն էր՝ որդի հօրեղբօր նորուն. զի նախնականն իւրեանց բնականօքն շարժմամբ բարոյականին առ ի յօգտակար վայելսն ճեպիցին գալ հանդիպիլ միմեանց սիրոյ եւ խաղաղութեան արգասեօք, եւ տիրական կեանք նոցա հասարակաց մի՛ անխնամեսցին, եւ աշխարհ նոցա մի՛ եղիցի խոպանացեալ սպառ սպուռ փշաբեր եւ մացառախիտ եւ լինել ի դադարս ելուզակաց:

 63:2 Then he levied troops from among them, and setting out arrived at the district of Kotayk’, from where he immediately sent an advance dispatch to the other king, the son of his paternal uncle, who was also called Ashot, so that because of the moral obligations of a common ancestry, and on behalf of their mutual benefit they might meet in order to establish friendship and peace, so that the authority that they held in common might not be forgotten and their domain deserted, filled with thorns, and bushes, or turned into a refuge of brigands:

63:3 Սապէս եւ առ իս եւս յետկար գրոյ տուեալ, զի մի՛ դանդաղիցիմ երբեք երթալ դիւրել պատրաստել ի մէջ նոցա զքաջավայելուչ խաղաղութեանն պայման. եւ մի՛ տայցեմ թոյլ զթագուցեալ հաղբսն եւ զվատթարութիւն խռովութեանն յինքեանս շաղաշարել:

 63:3 He also made a solemn oath before me, so that I would not hesitate in promoting and preparing suitable conditions for peace, and that I might not allow clandestine snares and seditious degeneration to steal into their midst:

63:4 Իսկ թագաւորն Աշոտ եւս հաւանական միտս ստացեալ եւ սիրով սրտի զբանն ընկալեալ եւ վաղվաղակի չու յուղի անկեալ՝ երկաքանչիւրք մեք չոգաք ի հանդիպումն անուանեցելումն Շահանշահի:

 63:4 King Ashot also being of the same mind, accepted the dispatch with friendship, and immediately both of us set out to meet the so called shahanshah:

63:5 Եւ անդ ապա իմով թելադրութեամբ եւ բանի խրատու, որ դիմեալ ի լսելիս լսողացն հանգչիւր՝ զպաշարումն մառախլապատ եւ միգապատ ափշութեան մտաց չարին յանձանց ի բաց մերկացեալ՝ ամենայն իրօք յարակցէին յինքեանս զկատարեալ խաղաղութեանն դաշինս առհաւատչեայ երդմամբ զնոյն հաստատել:

 63:5 Then, on my suggestion and advice, whereby I appealed to them, they cleansed themselves of the mist of the shadowy confusion of wicked thoughts, and agreeing with one another in all matters, they came to a complete understanding, which they confirmed by an oath:

63:6 Եւ իսկ եւ իսկ երկաքանչիւրք նոքա՝ եկեալ հասեալ ի դուռն մայրաքաղաքին Դվնայ եւ անդ զմոլորութիւն պաշտօնէիցն հեթանոսաց յինքեանս գրաւեալ՝ ընդ ձեռամբ նուաճէին եւ բազում կայտիռս եւ խնճոյս ցնծութեան զմիմեամբք զեղեալ. եւ ընդ կրունկն դարձեալ Շահանն կոչեցեալ շահ՝ խաղայ գնայ անդէն ի սիրեցեալն իւր յՈւտի գաւառ:

 63:6 Soon both of them arrived at the gates of the capital city of Dvin, where they put an end to the aberration of the heathen officers, and brought them to submission. After much merrymaking and festivities held in honor of one another, the so called shahanshah took leave and went to his beloved province of Uti:

63:7 Եւ մինչդեռ զճանապարհայն երթայր, ձայն գուժի աղմկի ընդ առաջ եղեւ նմա ի նմին իսկ յայնմ մարզէ. զի Ամրամն այն անուանեալ՝ որ ըստ ուժեղականութեան Ցլիկ ի բազմաց յորջորջէր, եւ զնա իսկ էր կացուցեալ Շահաննշահ հրամանատար ի վերայ գործոյ աշխարհին, իսկ նա չարիմացութեամբ ի մութ թաթաւեալ եւ այլապէս զինքն կերպարանեալ՝ ի բաց որոշէր ի հնազանդութենէ Շահանն կոչեցեալ շահի:

 63:7 While he was still on his way, he was confronted by sad tidings brought from that very same region. For (the governor of the land) whose name was Amram, but the people had nicknamed him C’lik (‘Little Bull’) for his robust physique, and whom the shahanshah had placed in charge of the transactions of the province, stumbled into darkness because of his wicked thoughts, and having revealed his true colors, renounced his allegiance to the shahanshah:

63:8 եւ լքեալ խոտեալ անարգեալ զբնիկ տէրութիւն իւր՝ հաճէր հաւանէր մտանել ընդ լծով ծառայութեան անբնիկն Գուրգենայ, որ իշխան իշխանաց էր Գամրաց աշխարհին. նա եւ զայլս եւս զբոլոր նախարարութիւն այնմ նահանգի դռոյթ ընդ ինքեան տուեալ ի նոյնն յարդարէր ապստամբութիւն:

 63:8 After having deserted and disgraced his own domain, he decided to enter the service of Gurgen, a foreigner (anbnikn) who was the presiding prince of the land of Gamirk’. He also won over to his side the entire naxarardom in that province and instigated them to rise in rebellion:

63:9 Եւ ապա առ ձեռն պատրաստ զամրոցն Տաւըշոյ առեալ՝ ի նմա ամրապահեստ առնէր զընտանիս տան իւրոյ. զի ինքն եւ իւրքն պարապորդ գտեալ՝ ժամանեսցեն ամբառնալ զինքեանս յանբոկ գործոյն եւ զթագուցեալ հաղբսն դիւրեաւ վճարել:

 63:9 Subsequently, making the fortress of Tawush ready for immediate use, he placed his family in the security of its fastness, so that unoccupied (with such concerns), he and his men might be able to carry out their task and easily lay the snares:

63:10 Իսկ Աշոտ երթեալ չուեալ գնացեալ հասեալ յաշխարհն Ուտիացւոց եւ տեսեալ, զի առ հասարակ յետս կոյս առ ի նմանէն մղեալ անցեալ զանցեալ եւ թիկունս դարձուցեալ էին, եւ ոչ ոք այնուհետեւ գտաւ նմա օգնական՝ բայց ի սակաւուց ոմանց աննշանից:

 63:10 But when Ashot came to the province of Uti, he saw that the majority of the people had abandoned and turned their backs on him. Thereafter, there was no one that would help him except for a very small number of unimportant men:

63:11 Այսպէս ահա բացածանօթացեալ նմա աղէտք իրին՝ ապա դէմ եդեալ տարադէմ գնայ չուէ առ թագաւորն Եգերացւոց, վստահս սրտի տուեալ աներկբայ յուսով առեալ զնախնի սիրոյն դաշինս, զի թերեւս պտուղս ախորժելիս նմա առ ի նմանէն հնձեսցի: Իսկ թագաւորն Եգերացւոց զհանդիպումն Աշոտոյ բազմաբաշխ ձեռաձրիւք եւ սիրալիր սրտիւք ընկալեալ՝ ամենայնիւ յամենայնի յարակցէր նմա ի բոլոր սրտէ եւ յանձնէ եւ ի զօրութենէ:

 63:11 Thus, when the catastrophe became clear to him, he withdrew and came to the king of Egrisi, giving him the assurance that he could with absolute confidence count on their former treaty of friendship, whereby he could expect to acquire desirable results. The king of Egrisi received Ashot with friendship, and bestowing on him bounteous gifts, gave his consent with all his heart, soul and power in regard to all matters:

63:12 Եւ ապա զմեծն տուեալ նմա օգնականութիւն եւ զօր բազում գումարեալ՝ գրեթէ իբր օդապարիկ իմն երիվարօք եւ երկաթակուռ զրահիւք եւ զարհուրեցուցիչ սաղաւարտիւք եւ լանջապանակ երկաթագամ տախտակօք կրծից եւ վահանօք ամրօք եւ ի զէնս եւ ի զարդս եւ ի տէգս նիզակաց վառեցելովք՝ տայ զայն ամենայն ի ձեռս նորա, զի նոքօք հանդերձ վրէժս ի թշնամեացն առցէ:

 63:12 Subsequently, he gave Ashot much assistance, and having gathered numerous forces with winged steeds, iron-studded armor, and fearful helmets, iron-studded breastplates and strong shields, weapons, ornaments and spears, he handed them over to him, so that with their help he might exact vengeance on his enemies:

63:13 Իսկ նա վաղվաղակի սպայակոյտ գնդիւն տարմաբար իմն եկեալ հասեալ եւ իբրեւ զմի այր զբազումս ընդ ինքեան խրախուսեալ՝ կարծէր կարել կարկատել մօտ ընդ հուպ զելն իրին եւ զզէն զինուորութեան իւրեանց առ ձեռն ի թշնամիսն թափել:

 63:13 Ashot immediately reached his destination together with his cavalry forces, and thought that by encouraging the numerous troops with him to fight like one man he might be able to find an immediate solution to the problem, and turn their arms ready at hand against the enemy:

63:14 Այլ Ամրամն այն՝ Ցլիկն յորջորջեալ, եւ ընդ նմա այլ եւս ապստամբ սրիկայքն զօր բազում յօգնականութիւն իւրեանց յամենայն ուստեք գումարտակ արարեալ՝ որջացեալ ամրացեալ կային ի մէջ անտառախիտ մայրեացն առ ափն Կուր գետոյ:

 63:14 Amram, however, who was called C’lik (Little Bull), as well as the rest of the rebellious brigands with him, summoned great numbers of forces to their succor from all parts, and took refuge in the thick pine forests along the bank of the River Kur:

63:15 Իսկ Աշոտոյ իբրեւ ոչ յաջողեցաւ մարտ ընդդէմ թշնամեացն յարդարել դնել, ապա եւ ինքն հորդան իւրոյ զօրուն տուեալ՝ անխորհրդաբար անկանէր յանձուկ եւ ի նեղուց վայրս ամրոցի միոյ. զի ոչ ումեք լինէր հնարել անել ի տեղւոջէ անտի առնել սակս շուրջանակի մացառախիտ մօրացեալ թաւալոցացն, բայց ի միոյն յայն ի նեղ եւ յանձուկ վայրացն՝ որ մտինն:

 63:15 As Ashot could not engage in combat with the enemy, he led away his forces and carelessly brought them into the narrow defile of a fortress, where there was no exit other than the one single narrow and difficult passage that they had taken, because precipices covered with mulberry bushes surrounded the place:

63:16 Եւ այսպէս կամաւ իբրեւ ի բանտ ըմբռնեալ՝ ոչ բաւէին կարել արտաքուստ ի ներքս առնուլ ռոճիկս յուտել, կամ ջուր ի զովացումն, կամ խար երիվարաց. եւ ի խորհրդոցն անհաստատութենէ նեղեալք տառապեալ տագնապեալ տարակուսեալ լինէին առ հասարակ զօրքն ամենայն:

 63:16 Thus, as if being confined in prison by their own will, they neither could bring in provisions from the outside, in order to satisfy their hunger, nor acquire water to quench their thirst, or obtain straw for the steeds. The entire army was distressed and annoyed by the thought of their insecure state:

63:17 Եւ այսպէս զմիտս իւրեանց թուլացուցեալ՝ բանս գաղտնիս յունկն թշնամեացն արկանէին. զի զԱշոտ կալեալ կապեալ տայցեն նոցա, եւ իւրաքանչիւր նոքա առանց ամենայն վնասուց ելեալ չուեալ գնասցեն յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս:

 63:17 Consequently, growing weak in their determination, they sent secret word to the enemy, and promised to hand over Ashot to them in fetters, provided that they would all go to their homes without suffering any harm:

63:18 Այսմ իրազեկ Աշոտի լեալ եւ ահիւ բազմաւ ըմբռնեալ՝ առ ինքն լռելեայն զմերձաւորսն եւ զխորհրդածուսն իւր կապակցէր դաշանց երդմամբ. եւ իբրեւ օդապարիկ իմն սրավար երիվարս պատրաստեալ՝ յեղակարծումն ժամու զմէջ գիշերաւն հեծեալ հատեալ ընդ մէջ սպայակոյտ զօրուն անցեալ գնաց՝ դէմ եդեալ յամրոցն, որ կոչի Կաքաւաքար, եւ անտի ուր յաջողեսցի երթալ:

 63:18 When Ashot became aware of this, he was struck with great fear, and secretly affirming by oath the allegiance of his kinsmen and advisers, prepared steeds as swift (as birds), and mounting on them unexpectedly in the middle of the night, cut through the cavalry, and set forth to the fortress called Kak’awak’ar, in order to go from there wherever he could:

63:19 Զայն տեսեալ թշնամեացն եւ զկիրճն մտիցն տեղւոյն այնմ պաշարմամբ կալեալ՝ առ հասարակ զզօրսն կապուտ կողոպուտ առնէին, մինչ զի ոչ մի ոք ի նոցանէն կարէր ճողոպրել. բայց միայն մարդասիրեալ ի նոսա, որպէս եւ քրիստոնէից իսկ կարգք պահանջեն զի մի՛ ոք մեռցի ի նոցանէն եւ մի իսկ:

 63:19 Upon seeing this, the enemy besieged the gorge at the entrance of that place, and subjected all the forces to plunder, so much so, that no one from among them could escape. They spared only their lives as the Christian canons demand, namely that no Christian should perish, not even one:

63:20 Եւ ապա յայնմ օրէ հետէ եւ անդր ոչ յաջողեցան հետեւանք արշաւանաց Աշոտի որպէս յերեկն եւ յեռանդն:

 63:20 Unlike his previous campaigns, ever since that time the outcome of Ashot’s invasions were not successful:

63:21 Թուի ինձ եթէ զողջախոհութիւնն զայն՝ զոր նախն էր ստացեալ, յանմաքուր բղջախոհութիւն փոխարկեալ եւ զքաղցրութիւն պաշտամանն Աստուծոյ յանձնէ ի բաց վարատեալ, եւ ըստ օրինակի Փարիսեցւոյն զանբարտաւան կամս կամեցուցեալ իւր, վասն այնորիկ թերեւս դատապարտեալ անկանէր՝ ոչ ժամանեալ ի կատարս փրկութեան իւրոյ:

 63:21 It seems to me that he turned his mind, which was formerly sound, to impure thoughts, and abandoned the sweetness of divine worship. Following the manner of the Pharisees, he enforced his arrogant will (on people). It was perhaps for this reason that he brought upon himself this condemnation and could not attain the conclusion of his salvation:
