68:0 Ազդ եղեւ առ տէրն Բագրատունեաց Սահակ, զոր Հայք եւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան ի ժամանակին յայնմ մարզպան կարգէին Հայոց. ասպետն Սահակ` զմարզպանութիւնն, եւ Վահան` զտէրութիւնն Մամիկոնէից եւ զսպարապետութիւնն Հայոց. որք նախ հաստատապէս ի վերնոյն հրամանէ եւ ապա ի Հայոց ընկալան զգործակալութիւնն. առ որս եւ եկք Պարսից գնդին լսելի եղեն:	68:0 Sahak, lord of the Bagratunik’, was informed of this. At that time the Armenians and Vahan, the general of Armenia, had appointed him the marzpan of Armenia. Aspet Sahak received the office of marzpan while Vahan received the office of the lordship of the Mamikoneans and the sparapetut’iwn of Armenia, first, clearly from orders from On High, and secondly from the Armenian people. They heard about the arrival of the Iranian brigade:
68:1 Եւ տեսեալ դեռ եւս անկազմագոյն զպատրաստութիւն զաւրուն իւրեանց` խորհէին առ վայր մի յամուր տեղիս գաւառին Տայոց չուել:	68:1 Seeing that their troops were still very disorganized and unprepared, they thought for a moment about going to secure places in the district of Tayk’:
68:2 Եւ դարձեալ զամենայաղթ աւգնութիւնն Աստուծոյ յիշելով` ասէին, թէ «Ոչ է յաղթութիւն ի բազումս եւ ի սակաւս, այլ ի վերին կշռողութեան ձեռինն, եւ մանաւանդ մեր գործս, որ ամենեւիմբ ի նորա աջողութիւնն հայի:	68:2 But remembering the all-conquering aid of God, to Whom they turned, they note: “Victory is not determined by numbers or the lack of them, but rather by (God’s) hand. This is especially true of our work, since we look to His aid completely:
68:4 Արդ` պարտ է այլ ոչ ինչ խորհել բնաւ, բայց ստիպով ընդդէմ նոցա գնալ, եւ զզաւրութիւն յաղթութեանն ի Փրկչէն բոլորեցունց հայցել:	68:4 Now we must think of nothing else, but to quickly go against them and to look to the Savior of all for the strength of victory:
68:5 Խորհէին եւ զայս եւս Աստուծոյ մտարկութեամբ, մնալ մարզպանին Սահակայ եւ սպարապետին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի եւ ոմանց յայլ նախարարացն անդէն յոստանին, ի քաջալերութիւն եւ ի բարի յոյս երթելոցն յառաջ, ի զարհուրումն եւ ի բեկումն սրտից կողման անաւրինացն:	68:5 Inspired by God, marzpan Sahak, the sparapet of Armenia, Vahan Mamikonean, and some of the other naxarars decided to remain there at the ostan, to encourage with hope those who went out first, and to frighten and break the hearts of the side of the impious. The following men then organized for war:
68:6 Եւ որք պատրաստեալք այնուհետեւ ի պատերազմն կազմեցան` Սիւնին Բաբգէն, զոր անուանեցին ի ժամուն իշխան տէրութեան Սիւնեաց, եւ ամենալաւ քաջ սեպուհն Մամիկոնէից Վասակ, եղբայր սպարապետին Վահանայ, եւ Գարջոյլն Մաղխազ, եւ երկոքեան որդիքն երանելւոյ Կամսարականին Արշաւրայ, Ներսեհ տէր Շիրակայ եւ Հրահատ նորին եղբայր, եւ երկու արք ի Գնունեաց տոհմէն, Ատոմ իշխանն Գնունեաց եւ եղբայր նորին Առաստոմ, եւ գունդ ընդ նոսա, որ էին թուով ընդ բնաւ չորեք հարիւր այր:	68:6 Babgen Siwni, who was then named prince of the Siwnik’ lordship, Vasak, the most goodly brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, brother of sparapet Vahan, Garjoyl Maghxaz, and the two sons of the venerable Arshawir Kamsarakan: Nerseh, lord of Shirak, and his brother Hrahat, two men from the Gnunik’ tohm: Atom, prince of the Gnunik’, and his brother Arhastom, and a brigade with them numbering [400] men in all:
68:7 Եւ մտեալ նոցա յեկեղեցին` երկիր պագանէին տեառն Աստուծոյ եւ արարչին ամենայնի եւ զաւրացուցչի, եւ խնդրէին ի նմանէ առաքել աւգնականս ընդ նոսա զճգնութիւն սուրբ նահատակին Գրիգորի եւ զամենայն սրբոց եւ զարդիս նահատակելոց քրիստոսասիրացն Հայոց, եւ զզաւրութիւն սուրբ խաչին:	68:7 Entering a church, they worshipped the lord God, the creator and strengthener of all. They requested that He send them as aid the asceticism of the blessed champion Gregory, all the holy saints and the modern Christ-loving champions of Armenia, as well as the power of the holy Cross:
68:8 Եւ Փրկչին Քրիստոսի գթացեալ մարդասիրապէս եւ հայեցեալ յարժանաւոր խնդրուածս նոցա` առաքէր ընդ նոսա աւգնականս զոր խնդրեցին ի նմանէ, եւ յուղարկէր խաղաղութեամբ:	68:8 The Savior Christ, moved by the love of mankind, considered their worthy request and sent them the aid they asked for, and He accompanied them in peace:
68:9 Երկիր պագանէին նախարարքն եւ ամենայն արք զաւրուն որք ընդ նոսայն էին` եւ հրեշտակակրաւն սրբոյ կաթողիկոսին Յոհանայ, որոյ նպարակեալ յուղարկեաց զնոսա իւր ստոյգ եւ արդար ոգւոյն աւրհնութեամբ ի գործ պատերազմին:	68:9 Worshipping there were the naxarars and all the military troops with them, as well as the blessed kat’oghikos Yohan (who possessed) angelic faith and who provided them with his soul’s true and just blessing, as food, and who accompanied them to the military action:
68:10 Եւ ապա հրաժարէին յասպետէն Սահակայ մարզպանէն եւ ի զաւրավարէն Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենէ եւ յայլ ընկերակցաց իւրեանց, որ անդէն յոստանին առ նոսա մնալոց էին. եւ գնացին ստիպով խնդալից յաւժարութեամբ:	68:10 Then (the troops) bade farewell to aspet Sahak, the marzpan, to Vahan Mamikonean, the general of Armenia, and to their other comrades who were remaining there at the ostan with them. They went quickly, with joyous enthusiasm:
68:11 Եդեալ ի մտի` ասէին, թէ «Ո՛վ գիտէ, կարեմք հասանել ի հունն, ուր գունդքն Պարսից անցանել կամին. եւ դարձեալք յաներեւոյթ տեղւոջ ուրեք սպասեմք. եւ յորժամ գիտեմք, եթէ կէս գնդին անցեալ է ընդ գետն` անկանիմք ի վերայ անցելոցն, եւ թերեւս վնասել ինչ կարեմք. նոյնպէս եւ մնացելոցն ի նոցանէ դարձեալ դիւրով կարեմք լինել գամագիւտ:	68:11 They planned and note: “Who knows, maybe we can reach the ford where the Iranian brigades want to cross, and wait in some unexposed place. When we know that half of the brigade has crossed the river, we can fall on them and perhaps do some damage. Similarly, we can fall on the rest of them and easily defeat them:
68:12 Եւ եկեալք ի գիւղն որ անուանի Վարազկերտ, լուան եթէ գունդքն Պարսից անցին ընդ գետն ամենեքեան, եւ են թուով եաւթն հազար:	68:12 When they reached the village named Varazkert, they learned that the Iranian brigades had all crossed the river, and that there were [7,000] troops:
68:13 Եւ քաջ սեպուհն Մամիկոնէից Վասակ, քանզի առաջապահ էր այն աւր` գնայր յառաջ ի գեաւղն որ անուանի Կռուակք. թերեւս լինիցի ինչ հնար, ասէ, ջանամ առնուլ զգնդին Պարսից զհանգամանս, թէ ե՞ն ինչ եթէ ոչ:	68:13 The brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Vasak, (who was the advance-guard that day) went on ahead to the village named Krhuakk’, saying: “Let me try to ascertain what if any information there is about the Iranian brigade:
68:14 Եւ երթեալ ի Կռուակս յաւթ` յանկարծակի յառաւաւտուն ծագել հասեալ ի նոյն գեաւղ եւ մարզպանն պարսիկ Ատրվշնասպ` լսէր զՄամիկոնենէն Վասակայ, թէ անդ է:	68:14 Going to Krhuakk’ to lodge, suddenly, at daybreak the Iranian marzpan, Atrvshnasp, arrived at the same village and heard that Vasak Mamikonean was there:
68:15 Եւ քաջ սեպհին Մամիկոնէից Վասակայ գիտացեալ զԱտրվշնասպայ եւ զնոցանէն որ անդ էին` հնարս փրկութեան քաջութեամբ խորհեցաւ, որով զգունդն իւր ապրեցուցանել կարասցէ ի ժամուն:	68:15 When Vasak, the brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, learned that Atrvshnasp and the Iranians were there, he thought of means of salvation through bravery by which he then would be able to save his brigade:
68:16 Հրաման տայր երկուց երկուց զոյգ, եւ կամ երից եւ կամ եւս յոլովից, ընդ այլ եւ այլ անյայտ տեղիս եւ ընդ փողոցս ելանել ի շինէն, եւ զատ ի միմեանց փութալ հասանել ի գեաւղն Վարազկերտ, ուր նախարարք եւ այրուձի Հայոց էին, եւ տայր գիտել նոցա:	68:16 He ordered (his men) to leave the shen and to go through unknown places and streets in groups of two, three, or more, separate from each other. (He told them) to hurry to the village of Varazkert where the naxarars and the Armenian cavalrymen were, and to inform them:
68:17 Եւ ինքն քաջ սեպուհն Մամիկոնէից Վասակ պատրողական բանիւք բանդագուշացուցանէր պատգամաւորաւք զԱտրվշնասպ ասելով, թէ «Ես պատգամ ունիմ առ քեզ զՀայոց, զորս լուեալ քո եւ որք ընդ քեզ են` հաստատ հաճոյ համարիք եւ աւգուտ զայնպիսի լուր ե՛ւ Արեաց տեառն ե՛ւ Հայոց աշխարհիս:	68:17 Then he, Vasak, the brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, by means of messengers, spoke deceptive and nonsensical words to Atrvshnasp, saying: “I have a message for the Armenians who are with you, which, when you and those with you hear it, you will certainly regard such news as pleasant and beneficial both for the lord of the Aryans and for the land of Armenia:
68:18 Եւ Ատրվշնասպայ լուեալ, թէպէտ եւ գաղտ ի միտս ուրախանայր, կարծեցեալ, թէ հաստատ նուաճումն գան` այլ սակայն առ նա խստագոյնս յղեալ ասէր, թէ «Աշխարհ մի ապստամբ առ իս զի՞նչ պատգամ յղեն:	68:18 When Atrvshnasp heard this, although he secretly rejoiced inside, thinking that (the rebels) had certainly been vanquished, nonetheless he sent back a very severe reply, saying: “What message could a rebellious land send me:
68:19 Եւ քաջի սեպհին Մամիկոնէից Վասակայ գիտացեալ զիւրոյ այրուձիոյն զերծեալք անվնասք, եւ թէ չ իք ինչ կասկած այնուհետեւ` պատասխանի արարեալ եկելոցն յԱտրվշնասպայ` ասաց, թէ «Մեր ցայժմ ոչ վատ ինչ գործեալ է եւ արքունի իրաց վնաս արարեալ. բայց դու ինձ հրամայեա՛ ասել զպատգամն, եւ ձեր լուեալ` ապա հայեցարո՛ւք յարժանն, եւ ծաներո՛ւք զոր ինչ պարտ է առնել:	68:19 When the brave sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Vasak, knew that his cavalrymen had escaped unharmed, and that there was no doubt of it, he replied to those who had come from Atrvshnasp, saying: “To now we have done nothing bad nor harmed royal affairs. But command me to state the message, hear it, and decide what is fitting and necessary to do about it:
68:20 Եւ արձակեալ զպատգամաւորսն, եւ ինքն հեծեալ յերիվարն` ասաց ցայլ Պարսիկսն որ կային անդ, թէ «Ես ծաղր առնելով ընդ ձեզ խաւսեցայ զբանսն առ պատգամաւորսն. այլ զիս ուրուք առ ձեզ պատգամ չէ յղեալ. բայց ես տեսանել զձեզ եկի, թէ ո՛րպիսի ինչ էք. այլ դուք էք մարդիկ վատք եւ անպիտան, եւ եկեալ էք ի վատի խնդիր, եւ պատահէք չարի եւ կորնչիք:	68:20 Having released the messengers, and having himself mounted his horse, (Vasak) said to the other Iranians who were there: “I was ridiculing you when I spoke with the messengers. No one sent me to you with a message. Rather, I came to observe you, and to see your qualities. But you are bad and useless men. You have come pursuing a bad matter. You will meet with evil and be lost:
68:21 Ասացեալ այսպէս քաջի առն` գնաց ինքն ի բաց անհոգութեամբ եւ յաներկիւղս:	68:21 When the brave man had spoken in this fashion, he departed fearlessly and without concern:
68:22 Եւ եկեալ քաջն ի գունդն Հայոց` պատմեաց նոցա, թէ գունդ բազում է, բայց յոլովք ի նոսա անպիտանք են եւ քերթաքաղ իշավարեան:	68:22 When the brave had returned to the Armenian brigade, he told them that the brigade was numerous but that many of the men were useless leaders of asses:
68:23 Եւ լուեալ զայսպիսի բանս ի քաջ Մամիկոնեան սեպուհէն միաբանութեամբ արք զաւրուն Հայոց` խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ ասաց, թէ պարտ է զի ի դաշտէն ի լեռնակողմն փոխել. խորհելով միաբան զայս. «Զի եթէ հարեալք, ասէ, ի դիմի, աւգնականութեամբն Աստուծոյ զաւրեմք` այն աջող իսկ է եւ բարի. եւ եթէ այլազգ ինչ դիպի` պահպանութիւն է մեր ամրութիւն լեռնակողմանն եւ աւգուտ մեզ:	68:23 Hearing such words from the brave Mamikonean sepuh the men of the Armenian troops consulted among themselves and decided that they had to move from the plain to the mountains. They were united in this thought: “If, with God’s aid we are strengthened and beat them, it is fine and good. But should something untoward happen, the security of the mountains will be our protection and aid us:
68:24 Եւ եկեալ չուեալք բանակեցան ի գեաւղն Մասեաց, որում անուն էր Ակոռի:	68:24 Then they went and encamped in the village named Akorhi (located on mount) Masis:
