59:0 Յաղագս պատերազմելոյ Աշոտոյ արքայորդւոյն ընդ Մովսէսի իշխանին եւ յաղթելոյ նմա:	59:0 King Ashot, the Son of King Smbat, Makes War against Prince Movses, and Defeats Him:
59:1 Բայց թագաւորն Աշոտ արքայորդին չուեալ գնայ առ մեծ իշխանն Սահակ աներ իւր. եւ ապա զկնի իւր զնա համագունդ հանդերձեալ իւրովքն զօրօք երթայ գնայ յՈւտի գաւառ առ ի հնազանդել զբիրտ ապստամբութիւնն Մովսիսի, զոր իւր իսկ կացուցեալ էր զնա իշխան եւ հրամանատար ճուաղաբարոյ ազգացն այնոցիկ Ուտի գաւառի:	59:1 Then, Ashot, the son of king Smbat, went to the great prince Sahak, who was his father-in-law, and subsequently, followed by the latter as well as all of his troops, he went to the province of Uti in order to pacify the brutal insurrection of Movses, whom he himself had set up as prince and commander over the barbaric tribes of the province of Uti:
59:2 Անդ ապա մեծ քորեպիսկոպոսն, որ պայազատէրն իսկ զմասն Գուգարաց մերձ ի Դրունս Ալանաց՝ գայր հասանէր զօրու բազմաւ ի թիկունս օգնականութեան թագաւորին:	59:2 Then, the great chorepiscopus, who ruled over the region of Gugark’ which is near the gates of the Alans, came to the assistance of the king with a large army:
59:3 Իսկ Մովսիսի տեսեալ զբազմութիւն զօրացն տարմաբար հորդան տուեալ ի վերայ նորա՝ ապա եւ նա գումարտակ մեծ առնէ յանդուգն եւ անճոռնի զօրաց, գրեթէ իբրեւ զյորձանս ինչ ուղխից ընդ զառ ի վայր հեղեալ, որք եւ ընդվզեալ փութային հանել մերժել զթագաւորն իւրեանց:	59:3 But when Movses saw the multitude of the forces coming to him en masse, he also gathered a large melange of daring but disorderly forces, rushing almost like torrents that stream headlong down the ravines, and rising in rebellion, made haste to drive the king out of their domicile:
59:4 Իսկ նա պատգամ առ Մովսէսն յղէր, զսառուցեալ հպարտութիւն բարուցն ջեռուցանել՝ եւ գալ ի հնազանդութիւն եւ կեալ ի խաղաղութեան եւ ի հանդարտութեան:	59:4 However, the king sent orders to Movses to put down his rigid haughtiness and submit to him in order to live in peace and quiet:
59:5 Բայց նա յաւէտ իմն խրոխտ խստութեամբ զպատասխանիս պատգամացն դարձուցանէր:	59:5 But Movses answered him with arrogance and rudeness:
59:6 Ապա խոհեմ եւ ուշիմ թագաւորն հանդերձ իշխանաւն Սահակաւ կուռ վառեալ զզօրս իւրեանց յաղեղն եւ ի սուսեր եւ ի տէգ նիզակաց՝ արս ընտիրս հոյակապս, առաջինս եւ ահեկինս կազմէին. եւ չուեալ իբրեւ զհրոսակ իմն վաղվաղակի հասանէին յափն ձորոյն, յորում ամրացեալ կայր Մովսէս համագունդ իւրայօքն զօրօք. եւ անդ ապա ահագին իմն դղրդմամբ շահատակեալ ահս պակուցանօղս ի վերայ նոցա հեղուին:	59:6 Thereupon, the wise and intelligent king, accompanied by prince Sahak, armed his force, that was composed of the choicest warriors, with bows, swords and spears. They arrayed the right and the left wings, and setting out like a company of brigands, soon reached the end of the valley, where Movses was holding out with all of his forces. There they fell upon the foe with a great uproar and struck them with horrifying terror:
59:7 Իսկ զայնպիսի ոյժ պնդութեան տեսեալ զօրացն Մովսիսի՝ յանկարծակի ցան եւ ցիր այսր անդր յարձակմամբ փախստէիւ հեռանային ուրոյնանային՝ միայն թողլով զՄովսէսն:	59:7 When the forces of Movses saw the intensity of the adversary, they were suddenly dispersed here and there, and turning to flight, left Movses alone:
59:8 Ապա եւ ինքն վաղվաղակի խուճապեալ ելեալ ի ձորակէն յարեւմուտս կոյս հապճեպով փախստեայ գնայր անկանէր յաշխարհն Սիւնեաց առ իշխանն Սմբատ. զի թերեւս ի սադրելոյ նորա հետի աղագս գտանել մարթասցի իւրայոցն տարակուսանաց:	59:8 Movses immediately hastened to leave the valley, and fleeing westward, again found asylum in the province of Siwnik’ near prince Smbat, with whose help he hoped to be able to find a way out of his problems:
59:9 Եւ մինչդեռ թագաւորն առկայացեալ յՈւտի գաւառի համոզել նուաճել զխստապարանոց աւազակուտ մարդիկ աշխարհին, յանկարծակի դիմեալ չուեալ գնացեալ Մովսէսն ի Սիսական կողմանցն՝ ի մտի դնէր երթալ առ մեծ քորեպիսկոպոսն Ծանարաց եւ բարւոյ խոստմամբ միաբան ընդ իւր զնա կացուցանել եւ գրաւաթափ իւրոյ տէրութեանն լինել:	59:9 While the king was delayed in the province of Uti trying to pacify the stiff-necked, fractious inhabitants of the land, Movses departed unexpectedly from the region of Sisakan, and decided to go to the great chorepiscopus of Canark’, in order to win him over to his side by attractive promises and so ransom his domain:
59:10 Զայն անցս աղէտի ընդ հուպ զգացուցեալ թագաւորին՝ վաղվաղակի զհետ աճապարել կրթի. եւ ձի ի ներքս տարեալ ի սաստիկ վառեալսն եւ ի կազմեալսն Մովսիսի եւ մօտ առ նա հասեալ եւ զագուցեալ գլխանոցն երկաթի վաղերբ դիպեցուցեալ՝ շեշտ ընդ մէջ ճեղքէր զամուր գլխանոցն, եւ յերկիր զնա հարստեալ. եւ ընդ կրունկն դարձեալ առեալ ընդ իւր զՄովսէսն տանէր, եւ խարեալ զաչս նորա խաւարեցուցանէր կուրութեամբ. վասն զի որ կամաւ կուրութիւն յինքն կրէ՝ ոչ երբեք կարէ նա գալ յառողջութիւն:	59:10 When the king was made aware of these foreboding things, he immediately made haste to pursue Movses, and galloping his horse through the lines of the well-armed soldiery of Movses, caught up with him, and striking his steel helmet with his sword and piercing the strong helmet in the middle, he pinned Movses to the ground. Upon his return, he brought him back, and cauterized his eyes; for he whose blindness is by choice, shall never be able to regain sight:
59:11 Իսկ իբրեւ այս այսպէս ի կամս անձին եղեւ իրագործեալ, ապա չուէ գնայ առ թագաւորն ի գաւառն Շիրակ եւ սիրալիր սրտիւ առ ինքն կոչէ զեղբայր իւր զԱբաս, զոր իշխան իշխանաց էր կացուցեալ, եւ զիշխանն Վրաց Գուրգէն զնորուն աներ՝ չեւ եւս գիտելով զոր առ ի նոցանէն էր նմա նիւթեալ դաւաճանութիւն չարակնութեան նախանձու: Եւ հանդիպեալ միմեանց ի գիւղն Որմանի՝ մեծապատիւ զնոսա առնէ ըստ օրինի թագաւորաց բազմապարգեւ բարութեամբք:	59:11 After these matters had transpired accordingly in compliance with his wishes, the king went to the district of Shirak, where he summoned with friendly disposition his brother Abas, whom he had set up as ’presiding prince’, together with the latter’s father-in-law, Gurgen the prince of Iberia. He was not yet aware of the conspiracy that they had set against him because of their wicked jealousy. They met one another in the village of Orman, where Ashot honored them greatly, as it was befitting for kings, and bestowed on them many gifts:
59:12 Եւ վասն զի ոչ լինէր յաջողեալ նոցա յայնմ տեղի բանալ նոցա զդուռն կորստական ըստ երկնային այցելութեանն՝ յուղարկի՝ ի նոցանէն. եւ եկեալ առկայանայ առանց իմիք կասկածանաց ի քաղաքագիւղն Երազգաւորս:	59:12 And as the latter were unsuccessful in opening the gate of destruction there due to heavenly ordinance, they escorted the king who unsuspectingly came to rest in the komopolis or Erazgawork’:
59:13 Իսկ նոցա ի ձեռն պատրուակի սիրոյ զդաւելն թագաւորին խորհեալ եւ հնարս որոգայթից նիւթեալ՝ յանկարծակի ի վերայ յարձակէին բազկել զնա անյայտաբար:	59:13 But, the former thought of plotting against the king under the guise of friendship, and having laid snares for him, they suddenly attacked with the intention of putting him to death unnoticed:
59:14 Իսկ ապա փոքր ինչ յառաջ իրազեկ լեալ թագաւորն եւ ստիպով առեալ ընդ իւր զուստր Աբասայ եղբօր իւրոյ եւ զգաղթն Երազգաւորից եւ հազիւ ի խարդաւանական որսորդութեանցն ճողոպրեալ՝ չուէ գնայ յՈւտի գաւառ:	59:14 Nevertheless, shortly before this, becoming aware of the conspiracy, the king hastily took with him the son of his brother Abas, as well as the emigrants in Erazgawork’, and barely escaping in the insidious hunt, went to the province of Uti:
59:15 Իսկ նոցա եկեալ եւ ոչ գտեալ մարթեցուցանել զոր կամէինն՝ ամօթ զանձամբ արկեալ եւ յետկոյս մնացական գաղթն յաւարի առեալ՝ դառնային:	59:15 But when they (the conspirators) arrived there, and realized that they could not carry out what they wanted to, they were struck with shame, and having looted the emigrants that had been left behind, turned back:
59:16 Եւ յայնմ հետէ ապա սաստիկ թշնամութիւն ի մէջ նոցա զեղեալ լնոյր յայսպիսի խորհեցեալ մահահոտ չարութենէ:	59:16 Thenceforth, violent hostilities commenced between them as a result of the preconceived wickedness above, which bore the stench of death:
59:17 Բայց Վասակ, որ սեպհականաբար պայազատէր զտէրութիւն Գեղարքունւոյ՝ կարծիս իմն երկիւղի զարքայէ ի մտի եդեալ՝ խնդրէր առ ի նմանէ յետկար երդման, զի անկասկած լիցի ի մտանելն առ նաեւ յելանելն:	59:17 Be that as it may, Vasak, the hereditary lord of Geghark’unik’, apprehensive of the king, asked for a solemn oath, so that he might rest at ease at the coming and going of the king in and out of his territory:
59:18 զոր իմ իսկ ընկալեալ յարքայէ զնամակն՝ եւ տուեալ առ Վասակ: Ապա չուէ գնայ առ թագաւորն. եւ յառաջնում նուագին իբրեւ զհամամիտ գործակից եւ զեղբայր սիրելի հաւատարմացուցեալ իւր ընդունէր զնա պատուով մեծաւ:	59:18 I myself received the letter of assurance from the king and handed it over to Vasak. Subsequently, the latter went to the king, who at first received him with great honor, and assured him that he would treat him as his coadjutor and as one who is of the same mind as well as a beloved brother:
59:19 Իսկ զկնի ապա հրապուրեալ յոմանց, որք ասէինն թուղթս առ նա գտեալ զմիւս թագաւորին Աշոտոյ եւ Գուրգենայ աներոյ իւրոյ ի ձեռն սուրհանդակի միում լի ամենայն խորամանկ խորհրդովք. սակս այսորիկ կալեալ կապէ զնա երկաթի կապանօք եւ դնէ յամրոցի անդ, որ Կայեանն կոչի:	59:19 However, sometime later he was inclined to believe the words of some who maintained that Vasak held in his possession letters sent to him by the other king Ashot and his father-in-law Gurgen through a messenger, and that these were full of cunning advice. For this reason, Ashot bound him with fetters of iron and confined him in the fortress of Kayean:
59:20 Իսկ ես թէպէտ եւ սաստկագոյն բան յանդիմանութեան ի վերայ ածեալ թագաւորին՝ պաշարեցի զնա կշտամբութեամբ մեծաւ վասն ստելոյ ուխտին երդման եւ կապելոյ զՎասակն եւ ընդ իւրով ձեռամբ զտէրութիւն նորա նուաճելոյ. սակայն նա ի Վասակ զվնասն տարեալ մղեալ հանէր եւ փոքր ինչ աւուրս ժամ եդեալ՝ յանձն առնոյր արձակել ի կապարանէն եւ հաստատել զնա յաշխարհ տէրութեան իւրոյ:	59:20 Although I admonished the king in very caustic terms and upbraided him greatly for breaking his oath, and seizing Vasak and subordinating his domain, he lay the responsibility on Vasak. After he had delayed the matter for a few days, he consented to release him from prison, and set him up in his domain:
59:21 Սակայն եւ ես սակս այնորիկ թոյլ առժամայն տուեալ՝ զի մի՛ թերեւս ըստ մանկական բարուցն գազանական ինչ ստասցի կամս, եւ զանկազմն դրժեալ գործեսցէ իր, որ եւ այսպէս ապա այլում տեղւոյ զայսոսիկ թողի հոգալ՝ երկնաւոր այցելութեանն յանձն արարեալ:	59:21 However, I also did not pursue this matter for the time being (for the following reason: I was afraid) that due to his childish demeanor the king might be possessed by a wild desire, and having broken his word, might do something unbecoming (of him). Thus, laying my trust in the succor of heaven, I postponed the care of the above matter to another time:
