53:0 Յաղագս դառնութեան տարերց եւ սովոյ եւ հարուածոց թշնամեաց, եւ մարդակեր գազանաց:

 53:0 The Severity of the Elements and the Famine: The Calamities Brought upon by the Enemies, and the Carnivorous Beasts:

53:1 Ըստ հարուածոցս դաժանութեանց եւ տարերքս եւս յեղափոխեցին ի մեզ զդառն առարկութիւն չարի. Վասն զի բարեխառն օդք հիւսիսայինք ի դառնաշունչ հողմ հարաւային շրջեցան. եւ քաղցր եւ հեշտալի գարուն ի ձմերային սգաւորութիւնս յեղանակեցաւ:

 53:1 In accord with the severe disasters (brought on us by the enemy), the elements of nature also turned on us the bitter impediments of evil. For the temperate northern climate gave way to the bitter southerly gales, and the sweet desirable spring season turned into wintry desolation:

53:2 Յայնժամ երկրագործք մեր բազմայորդորք էին ի վաստակս ձեռաց իւրեանց, իսկ այժմ լքեալք եւ ընդարմացեալք շտեալք. Յայնժամ շտեմարանք զեղեալք, իսկ այժմ դատարկացեալք եւ ամաչեցեալք:

 53:2 Formerly, our tillers were extremely zealous in the labor of their hands, whereas now they are dishearted, and disabled; then our granaries were full, while presently they are empty and discredited:

53:3 անդ հօտք արօտականք ծաղկաւէտք խայտացեալ, աստ խամրեալ եւ յոյժ պակասեալ:

 53:3 At one time flocks of sheep grazed joyfully in meadows covered with flowers, now, they are withered away and have greatly diminished in number:

53:4 Յայնժամ դաշտք պարարտութեամբ լցեալ, իսկ այժմ տխրութեամբ:

 53:4 Formerly, the plains were full of crops, whereas now, they are filled with sadness:

53:5 անդ եւ հովիտք բազմացուցեալ ցորեան, աստ կարկտիւ եւ չար ուղխիւք հեղեղեալ:

 53:5 The valleys produced great amount of wheat, while presently they are flooded by hail and wicked storms:

53:6 յայնժամ անձրեւք քաղցունք եւ շահեկանք, իսկ այժմ անպիտանք եւ ջաղբք եւ թորթորեալք յապականել զհունձս եւ զկալս, թէ եւ գտանի ուրեք պտղեղութիւն:

 53:6 In days of yore, the rain was pleasant and beneficial, whereas now it is useless, and tempestuous, and ruins the crops as well as the threshing floors, that is, if there are any crops:

53:7 անդ լերինք զցնծութիւն զգեցեալ, իսկ արդ անզարդացեալ առ ի չգոյէ արօտականաց:

 53:7 Of old the mountains were clad in joy, whereas now, they are bereft of their adornments because of the lack of grazing animals:

53:8 Տասն լուծք եզանց գործեցաք, եւ սափոր մի մեզ տուաւ. սերմանեցաք եւ ոչ հնձեցաք. տնկեցաք եւ ոչ կթեցաք: Թզենի ոչ ետ զպտուղ իւր. որթ եւ ձիթենի ոչ ետուն զզօրութիւնս իւրեանց. թէ շտեմարանեցաք ինչ, եւ զայն եւս այլոց թողաք:

 53:8 We put to work ten yoke of oxen, and received one jar (full of crops in return). We sowed, but reaped naught, planted, but did not get any harvest. The fig tree did not yield any fruits; the vine and the olive tree could not produce their yield. If we stored anything at all, it was given to others:

53:9 Եւ այսպէս անդրադարձեալ եղեւ մեզ տէրունեան բանն, զի մեք վաստակեցաք, եւ այլք ի վաստակս մեր մտին:

 53:9 Thus, we realized the meaning of the divine words, “We toiled, and others have come in for the harvest of our toil:

53:10 Եւ այսպէս ապա յամենայն յուսոյ բարւոյ զրկեալք՝ ծածկեցին զմեզ անարգանք մեր:

 53:10 In this manner we were deprived of any hope for the good, and shame covered our faces:

53:11 Եւ այսպէս ի յիշատակութենէ թշնամեաց եւ յանարդիւն անպտղութեանց՝ ապա եւ սովն եւս ի վերայ սաստկացեալ զօրանայր ուժգնապէս:

 53:11 Thereupon, because of the ransacking of the enemy and the fruitless barenness, severe famine also prevailed:

53:12 Վասն զի հուրն կայծակնացայտ որ տեղեացն ի մեզ, եւ սուրն անողորմ պատերազմացն որ միշտ ի մեզ բղխէր զհոտ մահու՝ մինչեւ յեօթն ամ ձգեալ ընդերկարեցաւ. Եւ վասն այսորիկ մնացեալքս պանդխտեցաք ի վրանս Կեդարու, եւ թափրացաք եւ ունայնացաք ի ստացուածոց եւ ի բոլոր պարենի ռոճկաց եւ ի չգոյէ կերակրոց:

 53:12 For the blazing fire that came upon us, and the merciless sword of the warriors that always poured on us the stench of death, continued (to scourge us) for a period of seven years. For this reason, those of us that survived migrated to the tents of Kedar, and were deprived of our possessions, allowances of supplies, and food:

53:13 Ապա այնուհետեւ սկիզբն առնոյր սովն կորստական եւ ապականէին առ հասարակ Այրարատեան աշխարհիս ծնունդք ի քաղաքս եւ ի գիւղս եւ յագարակս՝ իբրեւ զդիակունս գունատեալս եւ լքեալս դանդաչէին:

 53:13 Then the destructive famine began, and all the inhabitants of the province of Ayrarat in the cities, villages and agaraks were distressed. Discolored like corpses and in despair, they trembled:

53:14 Եւ այլք ի փարթամաց առ սակաւ սակաւ զիւրեանց ստացուածս վատնեալք ընդ աւուրն պարենի՝ ի վերջին տնանկութիւն հասանէին եւ յաւէտ յաղքատութիւն եւ ի կարօտութիւն:

 53:14 Some who were rich, spent their possessions little by little for their daily subsistence, and ultimately reached the final stage of penury and destitution:

53:15 Եւ կէսք ի խոտաբուտ կեանս ի հարկէ սովոյն բերեալք՝ զմոլեխինդն եւ կամ զայլս ոմանս վնասակար բանջարս ըստ դիպաց իմն ճարակեալ՝ յապականութիւն մահու հասանէին. զի վտանգ սովոյն հասարակ շարժէր ի կարօտութիւն զամենայն ինչ ի կերակուր նոցա բերել:

 53:15 Others were forced to turn to herbs for food because of hunger, and accidentally having eaten either hemlock or certain other harmful plants, perished. For the menace of starvation forced them all to eat everything out of need:

53:16 Իսկ ոմանք զսիրելի որդեակս իւրեանց ընդ սակաւիկ ինչ ռոճկաց թշնամեացն վաճառեալ ի տագնապէ վտանգին՝ ոչ յիշեցան նոցա աղէկոտոր խնամք ծնողականաց:

 53:16 Because of their fear of the danger, some sold their beloved children to the enemy for a small amount of allowance, and did not remember the heartrending duties of parents:

53:17 Եւ կանայք պատուականք ի հարկէ կարօտութեանն զքօղումն ի գլխոց մերկացեալ եւ զհանդերձս յանդամոց՝ առանց ամօթոյ ի հրապարակս ելեալ, առ տագնապին մուրացիկ շրջէին:

 53:17 Due to the requirements of their needs, venerable women stripped their heads of veils and their bodies of clothing, and coming out in the open shamelessly, walked about begging:

53:18 Եւ ոմանք ծիւրեալք եւ ծնգեալք եւ ցամաքեալք ի տարակուսանս սովոյն իբրեւ զմեռեալ պատկերս դանդաչէին, եւ թօթափեալք այսր անդր սակս նքողմանն եւ ընդ միմեանս հարեալք՝ կործանէին զիրեարս:

 53:18 Some, weakened, debilitated, and devitalized by the horrible famine, trembled like dead images and stumbled from side to side. Because of their languor, they collided into one another and fell down:

53:19 Եւ այլք իբրեւ զդիակունս բազմակոյտս ի հրապարակս անկեալք եւ լքուցեալք՝ մինչ շունչ նոցա մերձ էր յելանել, աղաչէին զանցաւորս ոմանս, զի կարկառեսցեն նոցա նշխար ինչ կոտորոյ հացի, եւ այնպէս զրաւէին ի կենացս:

 53:19 Others who had fallen on the squares like great piles of corpses, and had been abandoned, while they were about to breathe their last, begged the passers-by to extend them a piece of bread, and perished thus:

53:20 Իսկ եթէ ի մեծատանց ոք տալով ինչ տային նոցա ողորմութիւն՝ յետոյ յանողորմ բարս խստութեան ընդ մուրացիկսն դառնային, զի խղճէին եթէ գուցէ լինիցին եւ նոքա իբրեւ զնոսա:

 53:20 But whenever rich men gave alms to the beggars, afterwards they turned against them in a merciless and harsh manner, because they felt sorry for themselves thinking that they themselves might become like the latter:

53:21 Բարձեալ էր ապա յամենեցունց ի նոցանէ սեղան ուղղել. զի ոմանք առ սաստիկ կարօտութեանն զցորեանն՝ իբրեւ չէր աղացեալ կամ թրեալ՝ ուտէին. եւ այլք ի կրակարանաց զագահումն յափշտակեալ ուտէին:

 53:21 They all had ceased to set tables. Because of their state of utmost destitution, some of them ate the wheat before it was crushed and kneaded, while others snatched away the half-baked dough from the oven:

53:22 Չարչարանաց էր կերակուրն՝ զոր թէ գտանէին երբեք, եւ արտասուաց արժանի՝ տարժանական եւ ողորմելի ճաշակքն:

 53:22 If they found any food, it was through labor, and the wretched nourishment which they acquired through toil was worthy of tears:

53:23 Դողումն եւ սոսկումն եւ սարսափումն աստանօր զիս պատեալ պաշարէ ի բանէս, որ առաջի կայ ասել. զի մարդք հաւատարիմք ստուգեցին մեզ զբանս ճշմարիտ, եթէ մարք ոմանք զսովամահ որդւոց իւրեանց մարմինս ի կերակուր իւրեանց պատրաստէին:

 53:23 At this point, I tremble and shudder with horror at the account I am about to give. For trustworthy people verified the authenticity of this report, that certain mothers prepared meals for themselves out of the corpses of their famine-stricken children:

53:24 եւ այլք զընկերակիցս իւրեանց գաղտակծութեամբ իմն իբրեւ զոչխար ի սպանդ վարեալ՝ կերակուրս իւրեանց պատրաստէին:

 53:24 Others killed their friends treacherously in the likeness of sheep taken to be slaughtered and prepared meals for themselves:

53:25 Եւ այս անդր եւս քան զվրէժխնդրութիւն Երուսաղէմի արժանի անհնարին ողբոց գործս ինչ տեսեալ լինի. Վասն զի ձեռք կանանց ողորմածաց եփեցին զմանկունս իւրեանց եւ եղեւ նոցա ի կերակուր: Եւ որ ի գիրկս գրկեալք եւ գգուեալք էին՝ գիրկս արկեալ աղբեւաց՝ թարթափեալք թաւալէին եւ ուտէին իբրեւ զկերակուր:

 53:25 These afflictions (that came upon us) should be mourned much more than the vengeance exacted on Jerusalem. For merciful women cooked their children with their own hands, and provided food for themselves. The babes that were wont to be fondled and caressed were thrown into the trash, in which they tumbled, and which they ate in place of food:

53:26 Կցեցան լեզուք դիացիկ մանկանց ի քիմս իւրեանց ի ծարաւս իւրեանց, զի ոչ գոյր նոցա դիեցումն ի մարց: Տղայք չորաբեկ հացիկ խնդրէին՝ եւ արտասուք ընդ ծնօտս նոցա թորէին, եւ ոչ ոք էր որ տայր նոցա. եւ այնպէս ապա պակասեալ թափեալ հանեալ զոգիսն ի ծոցս մարցն իւրեանց՝ ընկեցեալ ցրեալ ցնդեալ կային առ հասարակ ծնեալքն եւ ծնողքն ի մէջ քաղաքաց:

 53:26 The tongues of suckling babes cleaved to the roofs of their mouths, because of thirst, as they were not suckled by their mothers. Children begged for a piece of dry bread and tears came down their cheeks. There was no one who would give them anything. In this way, they withered away and breathed their last in the bosoms of their mothers; children as well as parents in the cities were thus dispersed and lost:

53:27 Այսպէս մատնեցան ահա որդիք ժողովրդեան մերոյ յապականութիւն ի յանօրէնութեանց մերոց եւ ճռաքաղ եղեան ի վայրկեան ժամանակի:

 53:27 Thus the children of our people were condemned to perdition because of our wickedness, and they were destroyed in the twinkling of an eye:

53:28 Բայց առաւել քան զայսոսիկ խռովչացն վտանգ խոշտանգանաց զնոսա կորուսանէր. զի ըմբռնեալք ի ձեռաց նոցա ի հարուածս անհնարին չարչարանաց տանջեալ լինէին, զի թէ գուցէ գտցի ինչ առ նոսա կերակուր:

 53:28 On top of all of these, the torments inflicted by the seditious elements brought destruction upon them. For those who had been captured by them were subjected to the agony of unbearable torments, with the expectation that possibly they might have some food in their possession:

53:29 եթէ գտանէր երբեք ուրեք՝ կրկնապատիկ ազգի ազգի տանջանս հնարիմացս ի վերայ նոցա ածէին: Ոմանց գաւազանս ընդ ներքին համսն վարէին, եւ այլոց փայտս սրեալ յերաստանսն ցցէին. եւ կիսոց զաճիւն հնոցի հրախառն ի ծոցս եւ ի գլուխս վայթէին:

 53:29 If they found anything in the possession of anyone, they inflicted on him twice as many diabolic tortures. They inserted rods into the sexual organs of some, while they pierced the posterior of others with pieces of sharp wood, and poured ashes taken from furnaces hot with fire down their bosoms and heads:

53:30 ոմանց զներքին անդամսն եւ զծածուկ արութիւնսն կապեալ սամետէիւք՝ եւ նովիմբ զբարձաւանդակաց կախէին մինչ ի խզել խլել իսկ ի բաց համոյն, յորմէ եւ սակաւք ի բազմաց թէ ապրէին. եւ զայս ո՛չ միայն ի թշնամիսն՝ այլ եւ ի մարդս մերձաւորս եւ յընկերակիցս եւ ի ծանօթս էր տեսանել:

 53:30 They tied the privy parts of some with thongs, and suspended them from tall balconies until their parts were torn off. Very few people could survive this, and one could witness such things (done by them) not only to their enemies, but also to their kinsmen, friends and acquaintances:

53:31 Եւ այսպիսի խոր խռովութիւն պատէր զքաղաքօք, եւ գիշեր լի մահուամբ զգիւղիւք եւ զգերդաստանօք: Եւ մարմինք մերկք ընկեցեալ կային ի փողոցս եւ ի հրապարակս եւ տեսիլ սարսափելի անարգութեան տային տեսողացն՝ որպէս զի ո՛չ եւս ոք կարէր տալ զնոսա գերեզմանաց:

 53:31 Such was the disorder that prevailed over the cities, and the deathly night that covered the villages as well as the estates (gerdastan). Nude corpses remained tossed on the streets and the squares. The sight was so horrible and disgraceful that no one could bury them in a grave:

53:32 Եւ այսպէս ապա շանց եւ շաղղակեր գազանաց եւ թռչնոց երկնից լինէին կերակուր. եւ յայնմանէ սովորութիւն կալեալ գիշամուխ գազանացն՝ յորդեցին զօրացան բազմացան աշխարհակեր գայլք, եւ այնուհետեւ փոխանակ դիականց զկենդանասէր մարդիկ իբրեւ զանբան անասունս ժանեօք մանրեալ աղացեալ ուտէին. եւ ի միասին հնձեալք լինէին ի ճիրանաց գազանաց անտի պատուականն եւ անարգն: Քանզի թմրութիւն մեղաց եւ զանմեղսն եւս ընդ միգով իւրով ածեալ ծնգէր. վասն զի ելք են հասարակաց ի տարերց աստի աշխարհէ, եւ սահմանեալ աւուրն հատուցման պահի պատիւն եւ պատուհասն:

 53:32 In this manner, they became prey to dogs, carnivorous beasts and the birds in the sky. Subsequently, the rapacious beasts became accustomed to it and the numbers of the devouring wolves grew immensely. Thereafter, in place of corpses they began to devour the living by tearing them to pieces with their teeth, as if they were brutes. Both the venerable and the meek were cut down together by the claws of these beasts. The torpor about our sins also spread its mist over the innocent, and weakened them, for departure from this life is the common lot of all men, whereas honor and punishment are reserved for the designated day of retribution:

53:33 Այսպէս տարածեցաւ մահ ի սակաւ աւուրս եւ լիզաջինջ արար զԱսքանազեան ազն. եւ առ ամենայն մարդիկ քարոզեալ երեւեցաւ չար ամպրոպացն արկածք, եւ ստուերք մահու մեղաց ծածկեցին զմեզ յոյժ. վասն զի ո՛չ կացաք յուխտի Տեառն՝ անփոյթ արար զմեզ:

 53:33 Thus death spread in a matter of few days, and devoured the people of Ashkenaz. Mishaps caused by wicked tempests struck every one, and because of our sins the shadow of death covered us. As we did not keep the covenant of the Lord, He abandoned us:

53:34 Իսկ ես աստանօր պանդխտաբար ըստ հալածանաց ժամանակին նստեալ կայի ի մէջ Գուգարաց եւ Վրաց մերձ առ մեծ իմաստն Ատրներսեհ՝ թագաւորն կացելոյ յայնմ նահանգի. որ թէպէտ բազում հիւրամեծարութեամբ եւ առատաձեռն ռոճկօք առ ի նմանէն պատուասիրեցայ, սակայն ընդ յերկարեալ իմ պանդխտութեան անդ՝ որպէս երբեմն Իսրայէլ ի վրանս Կեդարու, յաւէտ իմն տրտմեալ տառապէի՝ ակնկալեալ եւ սպասեալ փրկութեան Տեառն Աստուծոյ:

 53:34 At the time of these afflictions I was an expatriate dwelling in Gugark’ and Iberia, with the wise king Atrnerseh, who was staying in that province. Although he honored me greatly as his guest and arranged for a generous allowance, yet, as my stay there was prolonged like that of Israel in the tent of Kedar, I was tormented by great grief and expected to be delivered by the Lord:
