Vahram Mirhewandak defeats the Mask’ut’k’. Ormizd is angry at his small share of booty. Vahram’s troops rebel against Ormizd and make Vahram their king. The attack of Vahram on Ormizd. The nobles kill Ormizd and appoint his son Khosrov asking. The flight of Khosrov from Vahram:
10:1 Եւ եղեւ յետ մահուանն Խոսրովայ որդւոյ Կաւատայ, եւ թագաւորել որդւոյ նորա Որմզդի ի վերայ աշխարհին Պարսից. որոյ մայր իւր դուստր էր Խաքանայ մեծի արքային Թետալացւոց, կին Խոսրովայ. հաւր սորա անուն Կայէն, որ թէպէտ ի հայրենեաց մեծագոյն՝ եւս առաւել մեծագոյն եւ գազանագոյն ի մայրենեաց կողմանէ:	10:1 It happened after the death of Khosrov son of Kawat that his son Ormizd reigned over all the land of the Persians. His mother, called Kayēn, was the daughter of the great Khakan, king of the T’etals, and the wife of Khosrov his father. Although very distinguished though his paternal ancestors, he was even more notable and ferocious on his maternal side:
10:2 Քանզի եբարձ սա զամենայն նախարարս եւ զնախնիս եւ զտունս բնակագոյնս յաշխարհէն Պարսից: Սպան սա զասպարապետն մեծ, զպարթեւն եւ զպահլաւն, որ էր ի զաւակէ Անակայ մահապարտի. զոր առեալ դայեկաց ի հինէ անտի Խոսրովայ արքայի Հայոց՝ փախուցին ի դուռն արքունի իւրեանց՝ ի կողմանս Պարսից: Եւ կատարեաց արքայն ի վերայ նորա զպարգեւսն խոստացեալս հաւրն նորա Անակայ զբուն իսկ զպարթեւական զպալհաւն անդրէն դարձուցեալ՝ թագ կապեալ մեծարեաց, եւ արար իւր երկրորդ թագաւորութեանն:	10:2 For he eliminated all the nobles and ancient lines and original (princely) houses from the land of Persia. He killed the great asparapet, the Parthian and Pahlaw, who was descended from the criminal Anak’s offspring. Tutors had taken him away from the brigand Khosrov, king of Armenia, and fled to the court of their king, to Persian territory. The king presented him with the gifts promised to his father Anak, restoring his original Parthian and Pahlaw (lands), crowned and honoured him, and made him second in the kingdom:
10:3 Եւ էին երկու որդիք սպարապետիս այսորիկ, անուն միոյն Վնդոյ եւ երկրորդին՝ Վստամ. զՎնդոյն կապեալ եդ ի Գրուանդականի, եւ Վստամ պրծեալ գնաց փախստական. եւ ոչ սակաւ ինչ պատերազմունս զարթոյց սա յաւուրսն յայնոսիկ շուրջ զիւրեաւ:	10:3 This sparapet had two sons, one called Vndoy and the second Vstam. (Ormizd) had Vndoy imprisoned in Gruandakan. Vstam escaped and fled. He stirred up no few wars in those days on his own account:
10:4 Եւ եղեւ ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ Վահրամ ոմն Մերհեւանդակ, իշխան արեւելից կողմանց աշխարհին Պարսից, որ հարկանէր քաջութեամբ իւրով զզաւրս Թետալացւոց եւ բռնութեամբ ունէր զԲահլ եւ զամենայն երկիրն Քուշանաց, մինչեւ յայնկոյս գետոյն մեծի, որ կոչի Վեհռոտ, եւ մինչեւ ցտեղին, որ կոչի Կաղբիոն: Քանզի զանց արար յայնկոյս նիզակի քաջին Սպանդիատայ, զորմէ ասեն բարբարոսքն, եթէ հասեալ նա պատերազմաւ մինչեւ ցայս վայր, ցցեալ զնիզակ իւր ի գետնի:	10:4 It happened at that time that a certain Vahram Merhewandak, prince of the eastern regions of the country of Persia, valiantly attacked the army of the T’etals and forcibly occupied Bahl and all the land of the K’ushans as far as the far side of the great river which is called Vehrot and as far as the place called Kazbion. For he passed beyond the lance of the valiant Spandiat, of whom the barbarians say that, having reached this spot in war, he thrust his lance into the ground:
10:5 Յայնժամ արարեալ Վահրամայն այնորիկ պատերազմն ընդ մեծի արքային Մազքթաց, որ էր ի կողմանն յայնմիկ, յայնկոյս գետոյն մեծի՝ եհար զբազմութիւն զաւրացն, եւ սպան զթագաւորն ի պատերազմի. եւ ըմբռնեալ յափշտակեաց զամենայն զգանձս թագաւորութեանն այնորիկ:	10:5 Then this Vahram, giving battle to the great king of the Mazk’ut’k’ who was in that region beyond the great river, defeated the multitude of his army and killed their king in the battle. He seized and appropriated all the treasures of that kingdom:
10:6 Յայնժամ առաքէ առ արքայն Պարսից ի ձեռն հրեշտակաց իւրոց հրովարտակս աւետաւորս, եւ սուղ ինչ աւարամասն ի մեծամեծ գանձուցն հասելոց յաւարէ ասպատակին, նշանակ թագաւորութեանն ի պատուական իրացն, եւ զամենայն զգանձն զաւրուն շնորհէ ըստ իւրաքանչիւր արժանաւորութեան:	10:6 Then he sent letters with the news to the Persian king through his messengers, and a small part of the booty from the enormous treasures acquired from the plunder of the expedition, as a token from these precious things of his control. And all the treasure he bestowed on his troops according to each one’s merit:
10:7 Արդ՝ իբրեւ տեսեալ թագաւորին Որմզդի զհրեշտակսն եկեալս աւետաւորս, եւ ընթերցեալ զգիրս ողջունի զաւրացն, եւ ընկալեալ զընծայսն աւարամասն ի պատուական յարքունական գանձուցն, թէպէտ եւ խնդացեալ վեր ի վերոյ զմարդկան զմիտս հաճէր՝ այլ ի ներքուստ ցասմամբ բարբառեալ ասէր. «Ընթրիքն առաւել մեծագոյն, եւ զնշանն ի պատառոյս ճանաչեմ. բայց յայնչափ սաստիկ գանձուցն ոչ էր արժան այնչափ հասանել յարքունիս:	10:7 Now when king Ormizd saw the messengers who had come with the news, and had read the army’s letter of greeting, and had received the gifts - the share of booty from the precious royal treasure - although he was outwardly joyful and humoured the men, yet inwardly he exclaimed in anger: ’The feast is exceedingly grand, and I acknowledge the token of this portion. But from such great treasures it was not right to send to court (merely) this much. ’:
10:8 Յայնժամ փոխանակ աւետաւոր հրովարտակին հրամայէ գրել հրովարտակ առաւել ցասմամբ, եւ արձակէ ի գնդէն համահարզանց եւ փուշտիպանացն արքունի, զի երթիցեն առ զաւրն, եւ զգանձն զամենայն ի միջի արասցեն: Եւ նոցա երթեալ սկսան պահանջել:	10:8 Then instead of a letter of greeting he ordered a letter to be written in very angry terms, which he despatched by a company of auxiliaries and royal guards, with orders to go to the army and seize the whole treasure. They went and began to demand it:
10:9 Յայնժամ ընդոստուցեալ զաւրն ամենայն, սպանին զհաւատարիմս արքային, եւ ի բաց կացեալ ի ծառայութենէ նորա՝ զՎահրամ նստուցին թագաւոր իւրեանց: Երդումն կնքեցին ըստ աւրինի իւրեանց. միաբանեցան եւ դարձան յարեւելից եւ դիմեցին յԱսորեստան, զի սպանցեն զթագաւորն իւրեանց զՈրմիզդ, եւ բարձցեն զտունն Սասանական, եւ հաստատեսցեն զՎահրամ յաթոռ թագաւորութեանն: Եւ փութանակի ժողովեալ եւ առեալ գնացեալ զբազմութիւն քաջ եւ մարտիկ ազգացն արեւելից:	10:9 Then all the troops were galvanized. They killed the king’s trusted (servants), rebelled from his service, and installed Vahram as their king. They sealed an oath according to their custom. In unison they returned from the east and made for Asorestan in order to kill their king Ormizd, eliminate the house of Sasan, and confirm Vahram on the royal throne. Rapidly they joined forces and went off, taking a multitude of brave and warlike eastern people:
10:10 Արդ՝ մինչեւ ցայս այսպէս շփոթ ամբոխի ի մէջ Պարսից աշխարհին լեալ՝ Յովհան պատրիկ եւ զաւրք Յունաց պատեալ պաշարեալ պահէին զքաղաքն Դըւնայ, մարտուցեալ ընդ նմա մեքենայիւքն՝ մերձ էին ի կործանել զպարիսպն: Իսկ իբրեւ եհաս լուրս այս՝ թողին զնա եւ գնացին. ճանապարհ կալեալ յԱտրպատական՝ լաստեցին զերկիրն ամենայն, հարեալ զամենայն զայր եւ զկին բերանով սրոյ իւրեանց, առեալ զամենայն առ եւ զգերի եւ զաւար՝ դարձան յերկիրն իւրեանց:	10:10 Now while such confusion was embroiling the land of Persia, Yovhan patrik and a Greek army were keeping the city of Dvin besieged, attacking it with catapults, and were close to destroying the wall. But when this news arrived, they abandoned it and went off, making their way to Atrpatakan. They seized control of the whole country, and put all the men and women to the sword. Taking all the plunder and captives and booty’, they returned to their own land:
10:11 Արդ՝ իբրեւ եհաս լուր աղաղակիս այսորիկ ի դուռն Սասանականին, առ Որմիզդ թագաւորն Պարսից՝ ոչ սակաւ ինչ երկունք ահի պատեցին զնա: Եւ կոչեցեալ զնախարարս որ ի դրանն արքունի եւ զգունդս համահարզանց եւ զփուշտիպանացն, եւ խորհուրդ արարեալ՝ առնուլ զգանձն թագաւորութեան եւ զամենայն ամբոխ դրանն արքունի, եւ անցանել յայնկոյս գետոյն մեծի Դգղաթայ ընդ զոմ ի Վեհկաւատ, եւ հատանել զլարսն կամրջացն. եւ խորհէր իւր ապաւէն առնել զբազմութիւն ամբոխին արքային Տաճկաց:	10:11 When news of this uproar reached the Sasanian court and Ormizd the Persian king, not a little fear enveloped him. Summoning his nobles who were at the royal court and the companies of auxiliaries and life-guards, he decided to take the royal treasure and all the personnel of the royal court and to cross the great river Tigris by the pontoon-bridge at Vehkawat and to cut the cables of the bridge. He planned to take refuge in the multitude of the army of the king of the Arabs:
10:12 Իսկ այս ոչ այսպէս պատկանէր. քանզի խորհուրդ արարեալ խորհին արանց եւ համահարզանց եւ փուշտիպանաց արքային, զի սպանցեն զՈրմիզդ եւ նստուսցեն թագաւոր զորդի նորա զԽոսրով:	10:12 But this did not so turn out. For the king’s counsellors and the auxiliaries and the guards took counsel and decided to kill Ormizd and to install as king his son Khosrov:
10:13 Արդ՝ վասն զի մայր շապհոյ դուստր ասպարապետին այնորիկ, որ էր նախարար տանն Պարթեւաց, որք մեռեալ էին, քոյր Վնդոյի եւ Վստամայ. եւ ինքն Վնդոյ էր այր իմաստուն եւ խորհրդական եւ սրտիւ արիագոյն՝ խորհուրդ արարեալ լուծանել զնա եւ առնել իւրեանց առաջնորդ եւ գործոյն գլխաւոր:	10:13 Now because the queen, mother of the royal prince and daughter of that asparapet who was a noble of the house of the Parthians who had died, (was) sister of Vndoy and of Vstam, and Vndoy himself was a wise and prudent man valiant of heart, they planned to release him and make him their leader and head of the undertaking:
10:14 Եւ գնացեալ ի բերդն Գրուանդականի, լուծին զնա եւ զամենայն կալանաւորսն ընդ նմա, եւ արձակեալ զոմն սուրհանդակ հաւատարիմ երագագոյն երիվարաւք, եւ գրեալ առ Վստամ եղբայր, զի սաստիկ ստիպով վաղ հասցէ ի տեղի գործոյն. եւ եկեալ նա փութանակի:	10:14 Going to the fortress of Gruandakan, they released him and all those imprisoned with him. They despatched a trusted messenger with very fast horses, and wrote to his brother Vstam asking him to come to the place of their undertaking in great haste. He rapidly arrived:
10:15 Եւ ժողովեցան ամենայն նախարարք եւ զաւրագլուխք եւ զաւրք ի դահլիճն արքունի, որ ի ժամուն յայնմիկ հանդիպեցան անդ. եւ մտեալ ի սենեակ արքայի՝ կալան զթագաւորն Որմիզդ, եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի փորեցին զաչս նորա եւ ապա սպանին: Եւ նստուցին զորդի նորա թագաւոր ի վերայ աշխարհին Պարսից. եւ սկսան առնել պատրաստութիւն փախստեան յայնկոյս գետոյն մեծի Դգղաթայ:	10:15 There gathered at the royal hall all the nobles, generals, and troops who were present at that time. Entering the royal chamber, they seized king Ormizd; immediately they put out his eyes on the spot and then killed him. They installed his son as king over the land of Persia, and began to make preparations for flight beyond the great river Tigris:
10:16 Եւ ոչ յետ բազում աւուրց Վահրամն եկն եհաս փութանակի իբրեւ զխոյանալ արծուոյ: Եւ քանզի մանուկ տղայ էր Խոսրով ի թագաւորել իւրում՝ առին զնա քեռիքն իւր Վնդոյ եւ Վստամ, եւ անցին յայնկոյս գետոյն մեծի Դգղաթայ ընդ զոմ, եւ հատեալ ի բաց զլարսն կամրջացն: Եւ եկեալ Վահրամն էառ զամենայն զտուն եւ զգանձ եւ զկանայս արքունի, եւ նստաւ ի գահոյս թագաւորութեանն: Եւ հրամայեաց կապել զլաստս փայտեղէնս, եւ անց զգետովն առ ի յըմբռնել զԽոսրով:	10:16 Not many days later Vahram rapidly arrived, like the swoop of an eagle. Since Khosrov was a young boy at the time he began to reign, his uncles Vndoy and Vstam took him and crossed the great river Tigris by the pontoon-bridge, then cut away the cables of the bridge. When Vahram arrived, he seized the whole palace, the treasure and royal harem, and installed himself on the throne of the kingdom. He ordered planks of wood to be lashed together, and crossed the river in order to capture Khosrov:
10:17 Բայց նորա յերկիւղէն ոչինչ կարաց ունել զտեղի: Իբրեւ անցին գնացին փախստական, եւ խորհեալ ի ճանապարհի, թէ որ լաւագոյն իցէ, երթալ առ արքայն Տաճկաց, եթէ առ թագաւորն Յունաց:	10:17 The latter was unable to stop from fear. After they had crossed over, they carried on in flight, deliberating on the road whether it would be better to go to the king of the Arabs or to the king of the Greeks:
10:18 Ապա լաւ համարեցան առնել իւրեանց ապաւէն զթագաւորն Յունաց: «Զի թէպէտ եւ է, ասեն, թշնամութիւն ի միջի, սակայն քրիստոնեայ են եւ ողորմած. եւ յորժամ երդնուն՝ ստել երդման ոչ կարեն»: Եւ գնացեալ ընդ արեւմուտս զուղիղ ճանապարհ երթեալ մտին ի քաղաքն՝ որ կոչի Խաղաբ. եւ դադարեցին անդ:	10:18 Then they reckoned it best to take refuge with the king of the Greeks: ’For although there is enmity between us, they said, yet they are Christians and merciful; and when they take an oath they cannot be false to that oath. ’ Taking the direct road to the west, they entered the city called Khalab and stopped there:
10:19 Եւ սա թէպէտ անց զգետովն՝ ոչ կարաց հասանել. յետս դարձան անդրէն ի Տիսբոն:	10:19 But he (Vahram), although he had crossed the river was unable to catch them up. They returned to Ctesiphon:
