8:0 Յաղագս թէ ո՛րպէս կայսր Վաղէս հալածեալ զամենայն ուղղափառ հաւատացեալս, եւ կամ ո՛րպէս կամեցաւ յանդիմանութիւն առնել կայսրն ի մէջ ճշմարտութեանն հաւատացելոց, եւ ի մէջ ձախող աղանդոյն արիանոսաց. եւ կամ ո՛րպէս սքանչելեացն տեսլեամբն սուրբն Բարսիլիոս կոչեցեալ ի պայքարն, եւ յաղթէր` Աստուծոյ զօրութեամբն` ախոյենիցն առ եպիսկոպոսաւն Եւսեբիւ. եւ թէ ո՛րպէս Եւսեբիոս վճարէր ի բանդին. եւ կամ ո՛րպէս Բարսեղ արձակեալ լինէր:

 8:0 About how the Emperor Valens persecuted all Orthodox believers, and how he wished to arrange a dispute between true believers and Arian malicious sectarians, and how in a miraculous vision Saint Basil was invited to a dispute and with God’s help defeated opponents in the presence of Bishop Eusebius, and how Eusebius died in prison, and Basil was released for freedom:

8:1 Ընդ այն ժամանակս անօրէն կայսրն Վաղէս մեծաւ բարկութեամբ դատէր ընդդէմ ճշմարտութեանն մշակացն. այս ինքն որ միանգամ զհաւատն Քրիստոսի արժանապէս հաւատասցեն` թէ ճշմարիտ արդարեւ Որդի Աստուծոյ իցէ, եւ ծնունդ ի բնութենէն Հօրն Աստուծոյ:

 8:1 At that time, the impious emperor Valens fought with great bitterness against the truth-seekers, that is, against those who correctly confessed that Christ really is the Son of God, born of the nature of God the father:

8:2 Վասն այսորիկ կամէր հալածանս տանջանս չարչարանս միահաղոյն յարուցանել, եւ սաստիւ իշխանութեամբ առ ամենեսեան գրեալ եւ տալ հրաման:

 8:2 Therefore, he intended to incite persecution against them, to subject them to torture and torment, and (in this sense) wrote and sent out a strict order everywhere:

8:3 Ապա ի մի վայր եղեալ` խորհեցան մոլեկան արիանոսացն աղանդոյն վարդապետք. զի ասէին, թող ընդ նոսա պայքար յանդիմանութեան հակառակութեան լիցի, արքայ. եւ որ կողմն յաղթեսցէ, յայտ լիցի. զի մի՛ զնա բռնադատ, զրադատ ինչ երեւեսցի յաղթութիւնն:

 8:3 But the teachers of the fanatical Arian sect gathered together and said to the king: “Let us arrange a dispute between us and them, king, and let it be known which side won, so that it does not seem that we won through violence and deception:

8:4 Եւ թագաւորն Վաղէս զայս լուեալ խնդալից լինէր. ընտրեաց իւր արս ճարտարս եւ պատրաստաբանս, զորս կարծէր դպիրս բանիբունս, որ անուանեալք էին չեպիսկոպոսունս աղանդոյն արիանոսաց:

 8:4 And King Valens, hearing this, rejoiced. For his part, he chose skilful, experienced people in debates, whom he considered knowledgeable and learned, false bishops of the Arian sect:

8:5 Եւ յղեաց առ եպիսկոպոսն Կեսարու Եւսեբիոս. եւ ժամ խնդրէր ի նոցանէ բանիցն քննութեան, զի ի հանդէս ածիցէ առ նա զնովաւ, եւ որ ճշմարիտն իցէ` յայտնի երեւեսցի:

 8:5 He also sent for the Bishop of Caesarea, Eusebius, with the announcement that a discussion of their confession was scheduled, so that he would come and attend the discussion in order to find out on whose side the truth was:

8:6 Ապա իբրեւ սահմանեցաւ ժամադրութիւն, առեալ եպիսկոպոսն Եւսեբիոս զկղերն զամենայն, եւ ի մեծ հոգս մտանէր. ուստի՞ կարծիցէ բանիցն պատասխանիս պատրաստել. զի եւ բանիւ ոչ ինչ կարի էր առաւել:

 8:6 When the time of this meeting was already set, Bishop Eusebius called all the clergy together and pondered how he should respond to the speeches of the opponents, because he did not possess a special gift of speech:

8:7 Ապա հաստատեցաւ այս բան ի խորհրդեանն, զի յղեսցեն հաւանեցուսցեն հաստատեցուսցեն զերանելին Բարսիլիոս, զի եկեսցէ նա:

 8:7 At the meeting, it was decided to send a man to Blessed Basil, to persuade him to come:

8:8 Զի նա, ասէ, կարող է բանիւ զօրութեանն. նա մեծ է, ասեն` ի նմա շնորհքն խափանել զնենգութիւն դաւաճանութեանն սատանայի. զի խորհի նա ի վերայ սրբոյ եկեղեցւոյ նորա, զոր ինքն արեամբն ստացաւ:

 8:8 Because, they said, he has a powerful word, and he has a great gift for suppressing the insidious machinations of Satan, because he thinks about the holy church (Christ), which he acquired with his blood:

8:9 Գրեաց թուղթ աղաչանաց եպիսկոպոսն Եւսեբիոս առ երիցապետն Բարսեղ, եւ մեծաւ պաղատանօք որ ինչ վասն պատուին պաշտամանն. զի մի՛ դիցէ ինչ ի մտի զառաջին եղեալ բանիցն գժտութիւն. այլ վասն զի առ Աստուած հաւատոց են բանքն եւ քննութիւնքն, վաղվաղակի փութասցի գալ առանց դանդաղանաց:

 8:9 Bishop Eusebius wrote a letter of supplication to Archpriest Basil, in which, with due respect, he very persistently begged him to forget the discord that existed between them and hurry to come immediately, because there were debates and discussion of issues concerning the faith:

8:10 Արկին եւ կղերքն ամենայն ձեռնագիր աղաչանաց, զի մի՛ ինչ դանդաղեսցի գալ, այլ յարուցեալ փութանակի երթիցէ:

 8:10 All the clergy signed a letter of entreaty that he should not delay, but come at once:

8:11 Եւ արս հաւատարիմս պատուականս յղեցին վասն վաղվաղ գալոյ:

 8:11 and faithful and respectable people were sent to hasten his arrival:

8:12 Եւ այն ինչ արքն յուղի անգան, որ երթայինն ածել զնա անդր. արդ մինչ դեռ յուղի անգեալ երթային արքն` էին ի ճանապարհի, սուրբն Բարսիլիոս ուր էին` մինչ դեռ ի պաշտաման տեառն կայր, անկաւ նմա քուն ծանր թանձրամած, եւ տեսանէր ի տեսլեան , զի այգի մի էր մեծ եւ վայելուչ, քաջաբեր լի պտղով. եւ խոզք երեք անգեալ էին յայգին, եւ մտեալք ի ներքս ի յայգին` ապականէին զայգին եւ բրէին:

 8:12 The people who had been sent for him had just left and were still on the way, and Saint Basil fell into a deep sleep at the place of his stay, performing divine services; in a dream he saw a large, beautiful garden, abounding in fruit; three pigs, having climbed into the garden, dirty and tore up the garden:

8:13 Պատառէին բազում ունջս որթոյ, արմատաքի խլէին եւ զտաշտն գլխովին եւ զբազուկ ընջովին, եւ մեծամեծ ապականութիւնս ի ներքս գործէին:

 8:13 In many places they undermined the soil under the vines, exposed the roots of the vines, pulled them out of the ground, and made great devastation there:

8:14 Եւ մատուցեալ էին այգեգործքն, ջանային եւ ոչ կարէին հանել զվնասակար խոզսն յայգւոյ անտի:

 8:14 The gardeners came, tried, but could not drive the harmful pigs out of the garden:

8:15 Ապա զաղաղակ հարեալ գոչէին առ Բարսիլիոս, եւ ասէին. Եթէ ոչ դու, Բարսիլիոս, եկեսցես, ոչ ոք կարէ հանել զխոզս յայգւոյ աստի, եւ ոչ մեծ ապականութիւնս դադարեսցէ. աճապարեա եկ հասիր, զի տակաւին աւասիկ վնասս մեծամեծս առնեն:

 8:15 And they shouted to Vasily and note: “If you, Vasily, do not come, then no one else will be able to drive these pigs out of the garden, and the ruin will not stop, hurry up, keep up, because they will still cause a lot of harm:

8:16 Ապա մատուցեալ Բարսիլիոս` հանէր զվնասակարս զխոզսն յայգւոյ անտի, եւ կազմէր զխախտածն:

 8:16 Then Vasily himself entered the garden — drove out the harmful pigs and put the damaged places in order again:

8:17 Եւ զարթեաւ սքանչելին Բարսեղ, եւ զարմացեալ ընդ այն տեսիլն, էր մտախորհ. եւ խորհէր ընդ միտս իւր վասն տեսլեանն` թէ զինչ իցէ. եւ անդէն հասեալք մատուցանէին նմա զթուղթն առաքեալքն ի Կեսարիայ քաղաքէ Եւսեբի եպիսկոպոսի:

 8:17 And Blessed Basil woke up, was surprised by this vision and thought, what could it mean? And so the people sent by Bishop Eusebius from the breed of Caesarea arrived and handed him a letter:

8:18 Այլ իբրեւ ընթերցաւ, խնդայր եւ ուրախ լինէր. զի գիտաց թէ յԱստուծոյ պատրաստեցաւ կոչել զնա ջատագով ճշմարտութեանն առ ի տալ պատասխանի:

 8:18 He read it and rejoiced, for he realized that by the command of God he was invited to defend the truth and answer (Arians:

8:19 Յարուցեալ փութանակի գնաց զհետ կոչելեացն թղթին, եւ չոգաւ առ եպիսկոպոսն Եւսեբիոս:

 8:19 Therefore, he immediately got up and, together with the persons inviting him, went to Bishop Eusebius:

8:20 Եւ իբրեւ խորհեցան ընդ միմեանս զարժանն, ասաց Բարսիլիոս ցեպիսկոպոսն Եւսեբիոս, զի խնդրեսցէ ի կայսերէ իշխանութիւն` զոք յերիցանց տանել ընդ իւր:

 8:20 When they consulted with each other about what was needed, Basil told Bishop Eusebius to ask the emperor for permission to take one of the priests with him:

8:21 Եւ մտանէր Եւսեբիոս առ կայսրն, խնդրէր ի նմանէ եւ ասէր. Երկուս ածեր ինձ ախոյեանս, թո՛ղ եկեսցէ մի ոք ընդ իս յերիցանց իմոց:

 8:21 Eusebius went to the emperor and asked and note: “You have put forward two rivals against me, so let me bring one of my priests with me:

8:22 Եւ հարցանէր կայսրն ցարիանոս եպիսկոպոսն, եւ յանձին կալան նոքա Եւսեբի քանի ածցէ ընկերս ընդ ինքեան, յորժամ գայցէ յատեանն:

 8:22 The emperor questioned the Arian bishop, and they agreed that Eusebius should bring several comrades with him to the meeting:

8:23 Իսկ իբրեւ ժամ ատենին հասանէր, առեալ կայսերն զեպիսկոպոսն Եւսեբիոս, եւ ընդ նմա երանելին Բարսիլիոս երիցապետն, եւ երկու ախոյեանքն հակառակութեանն` որք ի կողմանէն կուսէ սատանայի էին, այս ինքն արիանոսք չեպիսկոպոսքն, եւ մտին ի բանից ի քննութիւն հակառակութեան վասն տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի Որդւոյն Աստուծոյ, եթէ իցէ ծնունդ եւ որդի ի բնութենէ Հօր Աստուծոյ, եթէ ոչ:

 8:23 When the hour of the meeting came, the emperor took Bishop Eusebius and with him the blessed Archpriest Basil and two rivals from the opponents who were from Satan, namely the Arian false bishops, and they entered into a discussion and dispute about the Son of God Jesus Christ, whether he and the Son were born from the nature of God the father or not:

8:24 Ապա Հոգւով սրբով լցեալ լինէր երանելին Բարսիլիոս, որ կայր զկնիագոյն եպիսկոպոսին Եւսեբի. եւ սա գրէր վկայութիւնս ի գրոց յԱրարածոց ի սկզբանէ յօրինաց եւ ի մարգարէից եւ յառաքելոց եւ յամենայն աստուածաշունչ գրոց. յայտ առնէր եւ ցուցանէր, եւ զերկիւսեան ախոյեանսն սատանայի կարկեալս ըմբռնեալս ամօթապարտեալս հանդերձ թագաւորաւն կացուցանէր:

 8:24 Blessed Basil, standing behind Bishop Eusebius, filled with the Holy Spirit, cited: excerpts from the book of Genesis, the laws, the prophets, the apostles and from all Holy Scripture, explained and proved, and Satan’s minions of two opponents, together with the king, silenced and ashamed:

8:25 Ապա նայեցաւ թագաւորն Վաղէս ընդ եպիսկոպոսն, եւ ետես զի քրտնեալ էր, սկսանէր խօսել եւ ասէր. Այդ զի՞ է, զի զայդչափ հոսին ի քէն քրտունքդ. զի ի բանս ճշմարտութեան քննութեան վարձկանագրչաւդ յաղթեցեր:

 8:25 Then King Valens looked at the bishop and saw that he was sweating. He started talking and said, “What is it, why are you sweating so much? In the dispute about the truth, you won with the help of this hired writer:

8:26 Ետ պատասխանի Բասիլիոս թագաւորին եւ ասէր. Երկուս խոզս եւ մի էշ վարեալ այնչափ ընդ երկար ճանապարհ, եւ դու ասես. Զի՞ ես քրտնեալ այդչափ:

 8:26 Vasily answered the king and note: “I drove two pigs and one donkey along such a long way, and you still ask why I was sweating:

8:27 Ապա զղջացաւ թագաւորն` թէ ընդէ՞ր զԲարսիլիոսն հրամայեցին օժանդակ բնաւ Եւսեբի թողուլ ի ներքս:

 8:27 The king regretted that he allowed Basil to be present as an assistant to Eusebius:

8:28 Ապա յոտն կացեալ ամօթով արիանոսքն ասացին ցթագաւորն, թէ ընդէ՞ր այս աշխատութիւն քննութեանց են. այլ տիրաբար տուր հրաման, զի որք քո կամացդ ոչ լուիցեն, անկցին ի տագնապ նեղութեան:

 8:28 And the Arians, standing up in shame, said to the king: “What are these disputes and this anxiety for? As a sovereign, order you to persecute those who do not obey your will:

8:29 Եւ լուծեալ զատեանն վճարեցաւ:

 8:29 With that, the meeting was dissolved and ended:

8:30 Եւ ետ հրաման` զի զԵւսեբիոս արկանել ի բանդ, եւ ընդ նմա զբազումս, եւ նեղութիւն ի վերայ ուղղահաւատ որթոդոքսաց քրիստոնէից հասուցանէր. եւ ետ հարկս ի վերայ եկեղեցեացն տուժիւք մեծաւ ծանրութեան տուգանօք:

 8:30 And (King Valens) ordered to imprison Eusebius and many others with him, and continued to oppress Orthodox Christians, and imposed extortion and very heavy penalties on all churches:

8:31 Յայնժամ ի դառն կապանացն պատուհասէն մեռանէր եպիսկոպոսն Եւսեբիոս ի ներքս ի բանդին:

 8:31 Then Bishop Eusebius died in prison from severe suffering:

8:32 Իսկ վասն սրբոյն Բարսեղի ասէին ժողովուրդքն Կեսարու. Եթէ ոչ արձակէք զդա ի բանդէդ, այրեմք զքաղաքս զամենայն:

 8:32 And regarding St. Basil, the inhabitants of Caesarea note: “If you don’t let him out of prison, we will burn the whole city:

8:33 Յորժամ ամենեքեան միաձայն զայս աղաղակէին, թողացոյց թագաւորն, եւ արձակել հրամայէր զերանելին Բարսիլիոս:

 8:33 When everyone started shouting like that, the king relented and ordered Blessed Basil to be released:
