80:0 Եւ Հազարաւուխտոյ ընկալեալ զհրովարտակն, եւ լուեալ զհրաման թագաւորին` թողոյր աստէն զՇապուհն պարսիկ այրուձիով, այրընտիր գնդաւ, զտէրն Սիւնեաց զԳդիհոն առ նմա ամենայն գաւառին Սիւնեաց գնդաւ, եւ ինքն փութով գնայր ի Վիրս:

 80:0 When Hazarawuxt received the hrovartak and heard the king’s command, he left (in Armenia) Shapuh with the Iranian cavalry, a brigade of choice men, as well as Gdihon, the lord of Siwnik’, with a brigade drawn from the entire district of Siwnik’ and quickly went to Iberia:

80:1 Եւ երթեալ անդ` ժողովէր առ ինքն զուխտանենգաց դասս, որոց նենգեալ թագաւորին Վախթանգայ եւ երդման Աւետարանին ստեալ` առ Հազարաւուխտ գային. ժողովէին առ նա եւ այնք եւս որք ընդ արքայից արքայի միաբանութեամբ էին:

 80:1 There Hazarawuxt assembled the ranks of the oath-breakers who, having betrayed king Vaxt’ang and broken the oath sworn on the Gospel, went to him. He also assembled others who were united with the king of kings:

80:2 Եւ նա ումեմն թագաւորութիւն խոստանայր, եւ ումեմն գահ եւ պատիւ եւ պարգեւ բազում, եւ այլոց բազմաց զպէտս իւրաքանչիւր, եւ միաբանեցուցեալ զշատս յաշխարհէն Վրաց` գունդ կազմէր:

 80:2 He promised the kingdom to one, and to another gah and patiw and much pargew, and to many others whatever they needed. Thus he formed a brigade from the many who allied with him in the land of Iberia:

80:3 Եւ զայն տեսեալ թագաւորին Վախթանգայ, թէ իւրոցն ստեալ` թողին զնա եւ գնացին առ Հազարաւուխտ, եւ Հայք դեռ եւս ինքեանք անձեռնհաս են եւ վտանգեալք` խոյս տուեալ յաշխարհէն Վրաց` ի կողմանս Եգեր աշխարհին հասանէր առ վայր մի:

 80:3 When king Vaxt’ang saw that his own people had deceived and left him for Hazarawuxt, and that the Armenians themselves were unable to accomplish anything and were in danger, he quit the land of Iberia and temporarily went to the land of Egeria:

80:4 Իսկ Շապհոյ տարեալ զկանայս Կամսարականացն յամուր բերդն Բասենոյ, զոր Բողբերդն կոչեն` անդ թողոյր. եւ յանձն արարեալ Յըզատվշնասպայ բերդակալի զկանայս Կամսարականաց` պատուիրէր նմա բազում զգուշութեամբ պահել ըստ աւրինացն քրիստոնէից զնոսա, սրբութեամբ:

 80:4 Shapuh took the Kamsarakan women to the secure fortress of Basen called Boghberd, and left them there. Entrusting the Kamsarakan women to the fortress-keeper Vazat-Vshnasp, (Shapuh) ordered him to keep them very carefully and in sanctity in accordance with their Christian faith:

80:5 Քանզի կանայքն իսկ Կամսարականացն զնոյն ասէին բազում անգամ համարձակապէս բողոքով. «Թէ զարսն մեր արդարեւ կամիք նուաճել` զայդ եւեթ տուք լսել նոցա, թէ մեք խաղաղութեամբ եմք, ապա զոր ինչ հրամայէք նոցա` լսեն եւ կատարեն:

 80:5 The Kamsarakan women themselves had boldly complained to them many times that: “If indeed you want to subdue our men let them know that we are at peace and they will hear and obey anything you tell them:

80:6 Քանզի ամենայն Հայոց գիտելով ասեմք զայս, եւ վկայեն որ աստ առ ձեզ հայ մարդիկ են, զի քան զմեզ զայլ կին նոքա ոչ գիտեն. ապա թէ այլ ինչ լսեն վասն մեր` ի նախատանաց իսկ եւ յամաւթոց, թո՛ղ ի մեղաց եւ ի գարշութենէ` ըստ մերոց աւրինացն, առաւել դնեն զանձինս ի մահ, կորնչին:

 80:6 For all the Armenians will know about and testify that you are holding Armenians, for they know no other women than us. But should they hear anything else about us—insults, shameful things, not to mention sinful or loathesome acts—in accordance with our faith they will be even more resolved to die, and will be lost:

80:7 Քանզի եւ ինքն իսկ Շապուհ ոչ միայն ի լրոյ եւեթ գիտէր զնոցա պնդութիւն յաղագս քրիստոնէութեան, այլ ինքն իսկ որպէս իսկ ձեռնասուն որդւոյ` տեղեակ էր նոցա ամենայն իրաց, եւ քրիստոնէութեան պնդութեան, եւ յայլս ամենայն հրահանգս եւ ի միտս:

 80:7 Shapuh himself knew—and not just second hand—about their determination regarding Christianity and also, as a learned individual he was informed about all of their activities, Christian determination and many other things, through training and thought:

80:8 Որ վասն առաւել սուրբ պահելոյ զկանայսն` բազում անգամ յանձն առնէր բերդակալին, եւ զնոյն համբաւ եւ պատուէր ստէպ տայր լսել Կամսարականացն. առ որս յղէր հանապազ, թէ:

 80:8 As for keeping the women pure, Shapuh repeated this to the fortress-keeper many times, and he ordered that the Kamsarakans hear about this often. He sent to them frequently, saying:

80:9 Մի՛ կորնչիք, եւ արքայից արքայի ի ծառայութենէ մի՛ ելանէք. այլ եկա՛յք նուաճեցարո՛ւք, եւ զկանայս ձեր առ ձեզ առէք, եւ իմով միջնորդութեամբ զվնասդ թողուլ տամ արքայից արքայի. զոր ինչ արժանն է` շնորհել տամ ձեզ, եւ զքրիստոնէութիւնդ զոր սիրէքդ, որպէս ցայժմ կալեալ էք հաստատութեամբ` եւս առաւել յայսմ հետէ կալարուք, եւ մի՛ երկնչիք. եւ ես վասն զի սիրեմ զձեզ իբրեւ զորդիս` զաւակաբար խրատ տամ ձեզ, որով կեալ կարէք եւ ի միջի լինել:

 80:9 Do not destroy yourselves; do not quit the king of king’s service. Rather, come and submit, take your women and through my intercession, I will get the king of kings to pardon the damage you have done. I will bestow upon you what is fitting. The Christianity which you love and have firmly held until now you may hold even more (firmly) from now on, without fear. Because I love you as a son I am advising you in such a way that you will remain alive:

80:10 Ապա թէ խորհել կամիք, եւ կարէք ինչ լաւ սպաս ցուցանել արքայից արքայի, եւ հնարէք զՎահան սպանանել` գտանիցէք ի թագաւորէն պարգեւս եւ պատիւս, զոր ոչ է գտեալ ձեր ուրուք ի նախնեաց ի թագաւորաց. յորում վայելեալ ուրախանայք խաղաղութեամբ, դուք եւ ձեր որդիքն մինչեւ յաւիտեան:

 80:10 Then, should you wish to display some good deed to the king of kings, and (be able to) devise Vahan’s death, the king will give you gifts and honors which none of your ancestors has received from kings. And you and your descendants will enjoy this in delight, in peace, and for eternity:

80:11 Եւ լուեալ զայսպիսի պատգամս երկոցունց Կամսարականացն ի Զաւրագլխէն Պարսից Շապհոյ, թէպէտ այլ եւ այլ պատասխանիս առնէին բանիցն, խաբելով զՇապուհ ի բազում աւուրս, ապա գլուխ հաստատապէս պատգամին Շապհոյ, երկոքեան անշարժ հաստատեալք ի հաւատս, տէրն Շիրակայ Ներսեհ եւ Հրահատ, զայս յղէին, թէ «Մեր գործ եւ աշխատութիւն չէ վասն երկրաւոր ինչ վայելից, եւ ոչ վասն կնոջ եւ որդւոյ, որ ձեզ ծանր թուի եւ կարեւոր. բայց խորհուրդ է հաւատոյս մերոյ մեծ եւ պատուական:

 80:11 When the two Kamsarakans heard such a message from Shapuh, the Iranian military commander, although they gave various replies and fooled Shapuh for many days, nonetheless they remained firmly convinced in the faith, despite Shapuh’s message. Nerseh, lord of Shirak, and Hrahat wrote the following reply: “Our labor and work is not for any mundane pleasures, or for wife and child which to you seem significant and important, but for the mystery of our great and revered faith:

80:12 Մեզ, առ ահաւոր այնպիսի խորհրդոյն սիրով` ամենայն ինչ կենցաղոյս վայելչութիւնք փոքր թուին եւ ոչինչ, աշխարհ եւ կին եւ ստացուածք եւ մեծութիւն:

 80:12 Next to the love for such an awesome mystery, all the pleasures of life—land, wives, goods and greatness—seem small and inconsequential:

80:13 Զի եթէ ոչ հաւաստեաւ տեսանէաք, եթէ երկինք եւ երկիր եւ ամենայն որ ի նոսա է, չէ համեմատ այնմ պատուականութեան, որում մեք ցանկամք` չէաք այնքան անզգայք, թէ ոչ կարէաք խաբել զձեզ, որպէս եւ այլ հացկատակեանդ որ առ ձեզ են, եւ առնուլ կապիճ մի մոխիր եւ տալ ցաղախին մի մեր, որպէս նա զայն կամէր` պղծել. եւ մեք սնոտի փառաւք ի ձէնջ առ վայր մի վայելէաք եւ պայծառք երեւէաք, եւ ապա զյաւիտենից կորուստն կորնչէաք չարաչար:

 80:13 For if we could not see clearly that heaven and earth and everything in them do not equal the honor which we long for, then we would be too stupid to trick you and the other parasites around you, taking a heap of ashes and giving it to one of our maid-servants to pollute as she would. For a moment we might enjoy the futile glory (received) from you and appear lustrous, but then we would be eternally and wickedly lost:

80:14 Այլ վասն կանանցդ մերոց տամք ձեզ նշան ինչ, եւ ձեր փորձեալ քաջ քննեցէք. զի եթէ արդարեւ մեք յաղագս հաւատոյն, զոր սիրեմք եւ ունիմք հաստատապէս, եւ վասն այնր տենչալի յուսոյն եւ փառացն կրեմք զայս վիշտս, եւ հաճոյ է գործս մեր ճշմարտին Աստուծոյ եւ ընդունելի` զմեզ փրկէ ի նեղութենէս, եւ զկանայսդ մեր պահէ ամենայն սրբութեամբ եւ տայ ցմեզ. ապա թէ ոչ այդպէս լինի` մերում թերահաւատութեան մեղադրեսցուք, եւ մի՛ ինչ ձերում բռնութեանդ եւ սաստից:

 80:14 But as for our women, we will give you a sign; test and examine it well. For if we bear these sorrows for the faith which we love and firmly hold to, and for the coveted hope of (heavenly) glory and if our works seem pleasing and acceptable to the just God, He will save us from oppression, will preserve our women in all sanctity, and give them to us. Otherwise we will blame our lack of faith, but not your violence and force:

80:15 Եւ զայս բանս այսպէս յղեալ երկոցուն Կամսարական եղբարցն առ Հազարաւուխտ` ինքեանք եւս առաւել քան զառաջինն, անձամբ եւ զայլս յորդորելով, փոյթք եւ պատրաստք էին արբանեկութեան զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի` զամենայն գործ, զոր եւ հրամայէր նոցա:

 80:15 Thus, having sent such a message to Hazarawuxt, the two Kamsarakan brothers were even more ready and more eager than before to serve Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, to do anything he ordered. They also encouraged others to do likewise:
