16:0 Յաղագս թէ ո՛րպէս կամ զիա՛րդ կոչեցեալ եղեւ Արշակ արքայ Հայոց ի Շապհոյ արքայէ Պարսից, կամ զիա՛րդ մեծարեցաւ ի նմանէն մեծապէս. կամ զիա՛րդ Վասակ մամիկոնեան սպարապետն Հայոց սպանանէր զսորակալ ասպաստանին արքային Պարսից. կամ թէ զի՛արդ Արշակ արքայ աւետարանաւն երդուեալ արքային Պարսից, ուխտէր նմա, կամ թէ զիարդ ստեաց յետոյ եւ փախեաւ. կամ թէ զիա՛րդ արք եւթանասուն զԱստուծոյ պաշտօնեայսն կոտորէր արքայն Պարսից վասն նորա:

 16:0 How Arshak, king of Armenia, was summoned by Shapuh, king of Persia, and how he was honored by him; how the sparapet of the Armenians, Vasak Mamikonean, killed the Persian king’s stable-master; how king Arshak swore an oath on the Gospels to the king of Persia; how he later broke his oath and fled; and how Shapuh slaughtered seventy of God’s servitors:

16:1 Յայնմ ժամանակի կոչէր առ ինքն Շապուհ արքայն Պարսից զթագաւորին Հայոց զԱրշակ, եւ մեծարեցաւ ի նմանէ բազում պատուով եւ մեծաւ փառօք, բազում գանձու ոսկւով եւ արծաթով, ամենայն մեծութեամբ թագաւորութեանն:

 16:1 In that period, the king of Iran, Shapuh, summoned Arshak, king of Armenia, and exalted him with much honor, great glory, many treasures of gold and silver, and all the grandeur of the kingdom:

16:2 Եւ իբրեւ զեղբայր որպէս զորդի գրգեալ եղեւ ի նմանէ, եւ երկրորդական զմեծ տունն նմա յատրպատական աշխարհին. եւ ի միասին ի միում տախտի գահուն ի ժամ ուրախութեանն բազմէին, զմիագոյն զմիանշան զհամահանդերձ զարդու:

 16:2 Arshak was treated well by him, as a brother or a son, and Shapuh gave him the second great tun in the land of Atrpatakan. During the period of merry-making, they sat together on one and the same gah throne, wearing clothing of the same color with identical ornaments:

16:3 Եւ զմիօրինակ զթագն օր ըստ օրէ ինքեան եւ նմա թագաւորն Պարսից զարդ պատրաստէր. զոյգ երկոքին ի միասին որպէս զեղբարս հարազատս անբաժինս յղփացեալք էին ի միում ուրախութեան, եւ յանպատում ուրախութեան ուրախ լինէին:

 16:3 Each day the Iranian king prepared identically adorned crowns for both of them. The two of them, like inseparable harazat brothers, gorged themselves during the merry-making and were indescribably happy together:

16:4 Ապա եղեւ դէպ օր մի յաւուրց, եկն եմուտ թագաւորն Հայոց Արշակ շրջել զասպաստանաւ միով զարքային Պարսից. իսկ ախոռապետն արքային Պարսից նստէր ի ներքս ի տան ասպաստանին:

 16:4 Now it happened one day that Arshak, king of Armenia, went walking in one of the Iranian king’s stables. The Iranian king’s stable-master was seated inside the stable:

16:5 Իբրեւ տեսանէր զթագաւորն, ոչ ինչ առ լաւս կալեալ մեծարեաց զնա, եւ ոչ ինչ շուքս դնէր նմա. այլ եւ անարգանս եւս դնէր թշնամանաց, ասելով ի պարսկերէն լեզու` թէ այծից Հայոց արքայ, եկ նիստ ի խրձան խոտոյ ի վերայ:

 16:5 When he saw the king, in no way did he exalt him properly or show him honor, but rather, he dishonored him with insults, saying in the Iranian language: “King of the Armenian goats, come and sit on this bale of hay:

16:6 Զոր բանս իբրեւ լսէր սպարապետն զօրավարն Հայոց մեծաց, որում Վասակն կոչէր, ի մամիկոնեան տոհմէն, մեծաւ բարկութեամբ եւ բազում սրտմտութեամբ բարկանայր. ի վեր առեալ զսուսերն` զոր ընդ մէջն ունէր, հարեալ անդէն ի տեղւոջն զախոռապետն արքային Պարսից գլխատէր ի ներքս յասպանի անդ:

 16:6 When these words were heard by the sparapet general of Greater Armenia whose name was Vasak of the Mamikonean tohm, he became greatly irritated and angered. He drew the sword which he had at his waist and beheaded the Iranian king’s stable-master right there in the stable:

16:7 Զի ոչ կարաց լսել եւ ժոյժ ունել զիւրոյ թագաւորին զանարգանս. զիւր մահն առաջի եդեալ լաւ հաշուէր բազում անգամ, քան զտեառն իւրոյ լսել զվատթարութեան թշնամանս:

 16:7 For he was unable to hear or bear the insults to his king, many times regarding it better to die than to hear evil insults hurled at his lord:

16:8 Իբրեւ ի Պարսից աշխարհի էին, յայլոց ի տեղի եւ ի նոցուն հրապարակի աներկիւղ եւ անկասկած յանկարծօրէն զայսպիսի զգործ կարաց գործել:

 16:8 He did such a deed suddenly and fearlessly even though they were in the land of Iran, in another’s place, in another’s concourse:

16:9 Իսկ թագաւորն Պարսից յորժամ զայս լսէր, բազում շնորհ ունէր զօրավարին Վասակայ, ընդ քաջասրտութեանն զարմացեալ եւ ընդ բազում աներկիւղութիւնն:

 16:9 Now when the king of Iran heard about this, he expressed great thanks to general Vasak, marvelling at his brave-heartedness and courageousness:

16:10 Եւ բազում պարգեւաց եւ պատուոյ արժանի առնէր, զքաջութիւն եւ զտիրասիրութիւնն գովեալ:

 16:10 And he greatly rewarded him, making him worthy of much honor, as he praised his bravery and love for his master:

16:11 Վասն այնր իրաց մեծաւ սիրով սիրէր զնա, եւ ըստ արժանի իւրում պատուէր զնա. մեծարէր զամենայն աւուրս հաշտութեան եւ խաղաղութեանն` որ ի մէջ նոցա էր:

 16:11 As a result of that deed Shapuh felt great affection for Vasak, honored him in accordance with his worth, and exalted him every day so that there was reconciliation and peace between them:

16:12 Ապա մինչ դեռ անդէն եւս էր արքայն Հայոց առ արքային Պարսից, եւ մեծ սէր էր ի մէջ նոցա եւ մեծ խաղաղութիւն, երկնչելով երկեաւ թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ, եթէ գուցէ ստեսցէ սիրոյն նորա Արշակ արքայ Հայոց, եւ լիցի միաբան ընդ կայսերն Յունաց, եւ կամ կողաքակ ինչ լիցի ի նմանէ:

 16:12 Now while the king of Armenia was with the king of Iran and there was great affection and peace between them, Shapuh, the king of Iran, nonetheless feared that perhaps Arshak, king of Armenia, would violate that affection, might unite with the Byzantine emperor, or somehow be pried away from him:

16:13 Եւ ոչ հաւատայր նմա` թէ պահեսցէ առ նա զմտերմութիւն սիրոյն, եւ կացցէ յուխտին միաբանութեան ընդ նմա:

 16:13 He did not believe that Arshak would preserve the intimate affection he had for him or remain true to the oath of alliance with him:

16:14 Վասն այսորիկ երդումն պահանջէր ի նմանէն, մինչեւ կարի ստիպեալ բռնադատեաց զնա. Հաւանեաց, ասէ, եւ երդուիր ինձ յօրէնս քո, զի մի՛ ստեսցես ինձ:

 16:14 Therefore he requested a vow from him and intensely pressured him, saying: “Consent and vow to me according to your faith that you will not be false to me:

16:15 Իսկ իբրեւ կարի բռնադատեցաւ եւ ի նեղ անգաւ եւ շտապեալ տագնապեցաւ, ետուն հրաման ածել զերիցունս եկեղեցւոյն Տիսպոնի քաղաքի, որում անուն գլխաւորին Մարի. եւ բերին զաւետարանն սուրբ, եւ տայր երդումն արքայն Պարսից Շապուհ արքային Հայոց Արշակայ` երդնուլ յաստուածեան աւետարանն, զի այլ մի՛ եւս ստեսցէ նմա. այլ կացցէ յուխտի նորա, եւ պահեսցէ զդաշինս նորա:

 16:15 Under severe pressure and insistent force Arshak became harassed. They commanded that priests from the church of the city of Ctesiphon the leader of whom was Mari be summoned. They brought the blessed Gospel and Shapuh, the king of Iran, had Arshak, king of Armenia, swear on the divine Gospel that he would never again break his vow to him, but keep his oath and preserve his treaty:

16:16 Եւ վասն զի պատգամաւոր իրացս այսոցիկ էր տանուտէրն նահապետն մամիկոնեան տոհմին երէց եղբայր Վասակայ սպարապետին, որում անուն Վարդան կոչէր, մեծապէս արքայ Շապուհ յակն առեալ սիրէր զնա:

 16:16 Since the intermediary in these matters was Vardan, the tanuter nahapet of the Mamikonean tohm and the senior brother of Vasak the sparapet, king Shapuh felt great affection for him:

16:17 Իսկ իւր եղբայրն Վասակ զօրավարն Հայոց նախանձ բերէր ընդ երիցու եղբօրն իւրում ընդ Վարդանայ:

 16:17 But his brother Vasak the general of Armenia was envious of his senior brother Vardan:

16:18 Կամեցաւ խանգար առնել ի մէջ Արշակայ թագաւորին Հայոց, եւ փախչել. այր ասէր Շապուհ. Թէ ձեր սրտի մտօք է տուեալ զերդումն, զիա՞րդ կարէր ըստ հաւանութեան ելանել երդմանցն եւ կամ փախչել:

 16:18 He wanted to create a disturbance between Arshak king of Armenia and the king of Iran and flee. But Shapuh note: “If you made the vow sincerely, how could he oppose it or flee:

16:19 Այլ, ասէ, գիտեմ զի կախարդութեամբ խաբեցէք զիս. եւ որ ունի զօրէնսն ձեր, զնա սիրեցէք, եւ նենգութեամբ նմա խորհրդակից եղեալ` յինէն փախուցէք եւ կամիք դուք զտէրութիւն Արշակունեաց ի վերայ ձեր, եւ զնոյն խնդրէք:

 16:19 Rather, I know that you deceived me through witchcraft. You liked the one who holds your faith, you treacherously plotted with him, making him flee. You too want the Arsacid lordship over you, and sought for this:

16:20 Եւ երդնու Շապուհ արքայ յարեգակն եւ ի ջուր եւ ի կրակ, եթէ ոչ միում մարդոյ` որ յայդմ օրէնս քրիստոնէութեան է` ոչ տամ ապրել. եւ հրաման տայր զամենեսեան տանել սպանանել:

 16:20 And king Shapuh vowed by the sun, water, and fire, that he would not permit a single Christian man to live. He ordered that they all be taken and killed:

16:21 Եւ տանէին զգլխաւորն նոցա զՄարի երէց, եւ զայլ երիցունսն եւ զսարկաւագունսն, աւելի քան զեւթանասուն այր, ի մի գուբ զամենեսեան զնոսա փողոտէին:

 16:21 They took their leader, the presbyter Mari, and other priests and deacons more than seventy men and killed them all together in one ditch:

16:22 Եւ զաւետարանն սուրբ` յոր երդուաւ թագաւորն Արշակ` կապէր պատէր երկաթի սարեօք, եւ իւրով մատանեաւ կնքեալ, ի գանձատան հրամայէր, եւ տայր հրաման պահել զգուշութեամբ:

 16:22 And Shapuh ordered that the blessed Gospel on which king Arshak had vowed should be bound with an iron chain, sealed with his ring, and kept carefully:
