25:0 Եւ մինչդեռ ամբոխ աղմկին զօրացեալ յաճախէր ի մէջ որդւոցն Իսմայելի վասն անհաւատ պատերազմին, յայնժամ զերծեալ որդիքն Սմբատայ ի կալանաւոր պատանդէն. քանզի արձակեցան հրամանաւ Վլթի ի բանտէն:

 25:0 While the din of the mob fighting this unbelievers’ war grew louder among the sons of Ishmael, the sons of Smbat were freed from their confinement as hostages. They were released by the order of al-Walid:

25:1 Բայց յառաջ քան զգալ նոցա յաշխարհէն Ասորւոց սպանաւ Վլիթ, եւ արգելան անդէն յաշխարհին, զի ոչ ոք համարձակեաց նոցա ելանել յաշխարհէն: Ապա իբրեւ յաճախեաց պատերազմն ի մէջ նոցա, յայնժամ զերծեալք անկան ի Հայս:

 25:1 However before they reached Syria, al-Walid was slain and they were detained there, since no one dared to release them. But when warfare resumed among (the Arabs), (the former hostages) slipped away and came back to the Armenians:

25:2 Եւ իբրեւ հասին յաշխարհս Հայոց, յետ սակաւ ինչ ժամանակի երթեալք ի կողմանս Վասպուրական աշխարհին՝ խոշտանգանս եւ տագնապ մեծ յարուցանէին ի վերայ երկրին. եւ հարկապահանջ բռնութեամբ վտանգէին զնոսա մինչեւ հասանէր բողոք աշխարհիս առ հրամանատարն Իսահակ որդի Մսլիմի. եւ արգելոյր զնոսա ի գործելոյ զապիրատութիւնն:

 25:2 When they reached the land of the Armenians after a short while they went to the Vaspurakan area where they created hardship and great anguish in the country. They subjected (the people) to violent and forcible revenue collection until the lands’ protests reached the commander Muslim’s son, Isahak, who forbade them from such banditry:

25:3 Ապա իբրեւ զիրս մարտին եւ զամբոխ ժամանակին տեսին՝ սկսան վերստին հակառակ լինել իշխանութեանն Աշոտոյ. եւ ամենայն ուրեք ջանային գայթակղութիւն դնել անձին նորա: Եւ յարձակեալ ի վերայ նորա ի գիշերի զի էր ի հանգստեան, եւ զզօրս իւր սփռեալ ի գաւառսն՝ կամէին սպանանել զնա. այլ զգացեալ պահապանքն՝ ազդեցին իշխանին զհէնն որ եհաս ի վերայ. եւ փախստական եղեալ ապրէր ի ձեռաց նոցա. իսկ նոցա լցեալ բազում աւարաւ ի գանձուց իշխանին Աշոտոյ՝ դարձան ի հետոց նորա:

 25:3 Subsequently when they saw how the battle was going with this rabble, over time, once again, (Ashot’s opponents) began to oppose Ashot’s authority and were attempting to set traps for him everywhere. They attacked him at night while he was sleeping and his forces were dispersed throughout the district. They wanted to kill him. But the prince’s guards alerted him about the brigands coming against him and he escaped their clutches by flight. (His opponents) loaded up with much booty from Prince Ashot’s treasures and returned home:

25:4 Իսկ նորա իմացեալ զդաւաճանութիւն նոցա, զի յաւուրս խաղաղութեան վրէժխնդրութիւն չարութեան յուզէին առնուլ ի նմանէն՝ անձնապահ լինէր ի նոցանէն աւուրս ինչ: Եւ ժողովէր զաղխս տան իւրոյ յամրոցն Դարիւնից, եւ զտիկինն եւ զամենայն ընտանիս իւր. եւ թողոյր պահապան ի վերայ ամրոցին պահել:

 25:4 Ashot, realizing their treachery—since during (these) days of peace (his enemies) tried to exact wicked vengeance on him—protected himself from them for some days. He gathered the folk of his House into his fortress of Dariwnk’, his wife and entire family, and left guards to protect the stronghold:

25:5 Եւ ինքն անցեալ գնայր յաշխարհն Ասորւոց առ իշխանն Իսմայելի Մրուան առ ի զեկուցանել նմա զիրս աղմկին որ ի մէջ նորա եւ նախարարաց իւրոց: Եւ իբրեւ եհաս Պատրիկն զօրօք իւրովք ի տեղի մարտին՝ բազում յաղթութիւն լինէր զօրացն Մրուանայ եւ խորտակումն հակառակորդաց նորին. քանզի լուան զհամբաւ գալստեան նորա, եթէ եհաս պատրիկն Հայոց ի թիկունս օգնականութեան եւ ունի ընդ իւր ընտիրս հեծելոց [ԺԵՌ] արանց վառելոց:

 25:5 He himself went to the land of Syria, to Marwan the Ishmaelite caliph and informed him about the source of the disturbance between himself and his lords. When the Patrician (Ashot) and his troops arrived at the site of the battle, Marwan’s forces enjoyed numerous successes and destroyed his foes for they had heard the news of his arrival, that the Patrician of the Armenians had come to (the caliph’s) assistance with his [15,000] select cavalrymen:

25:6 Եւ զայս լուեալ հակառակորդացն Մրուանայ՝ լքան ի պատերազմէն, եւ հարուածք մեծամեծք եղեն յաւուր յայնմիկ. եւ պարտասեալք ի պատերազմէն՝ առ փոքր մի դադրեցին:

 25:6 Thus when Marwan’s opponents learned about this, they abandoned the fight and sustained some very serious losses on that day. And so, after defeat on the battlefield they stopped fighting for a while:

25:7 Եւ զայն ժամանակ յորում էր իշխանն Աշոտ յերկրին Ասորւոց՝ կացոյց որդին Մսլիմի ի վերայ զօրացն Հայոց իշխան՝ զԳրիգոր ի տանէն Մամիկոնեան փոխանակ Աշոտոյ:

 25:7 Now it happened that at the very time when Prince Ashot was in the land of Syria, Muslim’s son (Ishak) designated Grigor of the Mamikonean House (as commander) over the Armenian troops in place of Ashot:

25:8 Իսկ Մրուանն տեղեկացեալ զամբաստանութիւնն զորդւոցն Սմբատայ եւ զոր ինչ արար ընդ նա Դաւիթ եղբայր Գրիգորի՝ յղէր դեսպան առ որդին Մսլիմի Իսահակ, որ էր հրամանատար աշխարհիս Հայոց, եւ հրամայէ ունել զԴաւիթ եւ տալ ի ձեռս Օքբայի ումեմն, զի դատապարտեսցէ զնա որպէս եւ հրամայեալ էր վասն նորա:

 25:8 Marwan, being informed about the revolt of Smbat’s sons and what Grigor’s brother Dawit’ had done to him, sent an emissary to Muslim’s son Ishak—who was commander of the land of the Armenians—ordering that Dawit’ be arrested and given over to a certain Oqba (Ok’ba) to be tried and judged as the latter saw fit:

25:9 Եւ նա իբրեւ ընկալաւ զհրամանն ոչ կարաց յապաղել, այլ նոյնժամայն կոչեաց նենգութեամբ ունել զնա, եւ տայր ի ձեռս անողորմ դահճի, զոր առեալ կապէր դառն կապանօք եւ դնէր ի կալանս բանտի աւուրս ինչ:

 25:9 As soon as (Oqba) received this order, he was unable to retrain himself; rather, he called at once for him to be treacherously taken and placed in the hands of the merciless executioner. (The executioner) took and bound him with wicked restraints and put him into confinement in jail for a few days:

25:10 Եւ գրէ առ Մրուան եթէ զի՛նչ հրամայեսցէ: Եւ տուեալ հրաման՝ ծայրակոտոր առնել ոտիւք եւ ձեռօք եւ փայտիւ դատապարտել ի մահ: Եւ այսպէս ողորմելի եւ ծանականաց մահու վճարէր ի կենաց, որպէս ասացաւ՝ ըստ անհաճոյ Աստուծոյ բարուց ատելութեանն, զոր ունէին առ միմեանս. զի արդարեւ չար սերմանցն չար արդիւնաւորութիւն, ըստ ասողին բանի:

 25:10 Then he wrote to Marwan inquiring what he (would) order. And he ordered that his hands and feet be cut off and then that he be tied to a stake until he died. Thus (Dawit’) died a pitiful and ignoble death. As is said of behavior unpleasing to God and of the hatred which they showed to each other, truly bad fruit grows from bad seed. That is how it was in this case:

25:11 Եւ իբրեւ այս չարիք ի գլուխ ելանէին՝ դարձեալ հաստատէ զիշխանութիւնն Աշոտոյ Մրուան, եւ առաքէ զնա մեծամեծ պատուօք յերկիրս Հայոց:

 25:11 When these wicked deeds had been done, Marwan once more established the rule of Ashot and sent him to the country of the Armenians with very splendid honors:

25:12 Եւ յայնմհետէ ոչ դադարէր Գրիգոր յերկնելոյ զհակառակութիւն վասն քինախնդիր լինելոյ կորստեան եղբօրն, թէպէտ եւ վասն երկիւղի բռնաւորացն առնէր խաղաղութիւն ընդ Աշոտոյ բանիւք միայն. այլ սրտիւ ոչ միտեցաւ զհետ իշխանութեան նորա. քանզի սպասէր հասանել ժամու, յորում հասանէր կամացն խորհրդի:

 25:12 Thereafter Grigor did not cease displaying his animosity or vengefulness over the killing of his brother, though out of fear of the tyrants he demonstrated peace toward Ashot, but in words only. In his heart he did not recognize his authority. For he was waiting for an opportune moment to carry out his plan:
