18:1 Լուաւ ապա եւ մեծ թագաւորն Տրդատ, եթէ Գրիգոր եկեալ հասեալ է յերկիրս Հայոց:	18:1 The great King Trdat heard that Gregory had arrived at the country of the Armenians:
18:2 Առ զզաւրս իւր եւ զԱշխէն տիկին եւ զքոյրն իւր զԽոսրովիդուխտ, եւ չու արարեալ յԱյրարատեան գաւառէն, ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքէ, ընդ առաջ Գրիգորի, գայր հասանէր ի քաղաքագեաւղն Բագաւան, որ անուանեալ կոչի ի պարթեւարէն լեզուէն՝ Դիցաւան. եւ անդ սպասեալ մնայր նմա ամսաւրեայ ժամանակս:	18:2 He took his troops, his queen [tikin], Ashxen, and his sister, Xosroviduxt, and went to the city of Vagharshapat in the district of Ayrarat, to come before Gregory. He reached the town of Bagavan, meaning Ditsavan in the Parthian language, and remained there awaiting him for a month:
18:3 Իսկ նա շրջէր, զի լցցէ զկողմանս կողմանս եկեղեցեաւք եւ քահանայիւք եւ պաշտաւնէիւք եւ ամենայն աստուածագործ սպասաւորութեանն կարգաւք, եւ լուսաւորեսցէ զբազումս մկրտութեամբ:	18:3 Meanwhile, Gregory was moving around to fill every place with churches, priests, servitors, and all the ranks of divine service, and to illuminate many with baptism:
18:4 Ապա գայր հասանէր յանուանեալ Դիցաւանն ամենայն մեծամեծաւքն եւ զաւրաւքն եւ աշխարհակոյտ ամբոխիւն, որք էին ժողովեալ ի կողմանց կողմանց, եւ գնային շրջէին զհետ նորա եւ գտանէին բժշկութիւն եւ լնուին զպէտս իւրաքանչիւր ի նմանէ:	18:4 Then he arrived at the place called Ditsavan, with all the grandees and the troops and the mass of common folk, who had gathered from various places. They went and circulated around with Gregory and found healing from him and also fulfillment of each one’s needs:
18:5 Եւ նա ամենասփիւռ վարդապետութեամբն ամենեցուն սերմանէր զբանն կենաց, եւ «հանդերձ ամենայն սպասաւորաւք Աւետարանին որ ընդ իւրն էին, զոր չէ ոք բաւական ըստ իւրաքանչիւր անուանցն նշանակել, քարոզէր զԱւետարանն:	18:5 And Gregory through his teaching that spread to all, sowed in them the word of Life. With all the servitors of the Gospel who were with him from Sebastia whom no one could name in full, he preached the Gospel:
18:6 Որովք յանձն եղեալ երանելի եպիսկոպոսն շնորհացն Աստուծոյ՝ գայր հասանէր առ ստորոտով Նպատական լերինն:	18:6 Then Gregory, the blessed bishop, through the grace of God, arrived at the base of Npat Mountain:
18:7 Ընդ առաջ ելանէր նմա թագաւորն ամենայն զաւրաւքն հանդերձ, առ ափն Եփրատ գետոյն, որ եւ ընդ պատահելն իսկ լի առնէր զամենեսեան ողջունիւ Աւետարանին Քրիստոսի, եւ բազում ցնծութեամբ եւ ուրախութեամբ յաւանն դառնային:	18:7 The king with all the troops went before him, to the banks of the Euphrates River. At their meeting, Gregory filled all of them with the greeting of Christ’s Gospel. And, with much delight and joy, they returned to the hamlet:
18:8 Եւ անդ մատուցեալ թագաւորին իշխանքն եկեալք զբերեալ պատասխանին ողջունաբեր թղթոյն, զի գրեալ էր զպատճէնն աւրինակ զայս:	18:8 There the princes gave to the king the response to Trdat’s letter of greeting, which they had brought from Caesarea. It had the following contents:
18:9 ՊԱՏՃԷՆ ԹՂԹՈՅՆ ՊԱՏԱՍԽԱՆԻ: «Գանեալքդ՝ եւ խրատեալքդ, հարուածեալքդ՝ եւ ողոքեալքդ, տանջեալքդ՝ եւ նուաճեալքդ, կորուսեալքդ՝ եւ գտեալքդ, մոլորեալքդ՝ եւ դարձուցեալքդ, յակն առեալքդ՝ եւ սիրեցեալքդ Տեառն, Տրդատէս թագաւոր Հայոց մեծաց եւ Աշխէն տիկին եւ աւրիորդ մեծ Խոսրովիդուխտ, եւ ամենայն հրապարակք բազմամբոխ ժողովրդոց որ իցեն Հայոց Մեծաց. Ղեւոնդէս արքեպիսկոպոս մետրոպոլիտ մեգաղէ Կեսարու եւ ամենայն ուխտ սրբոյ եկեղեցւոյ քահանայութեան, եպիսկոպոսաց, երիցանց, սարկաւագաց եւ ժողովրդոց. ի Տէր խնդալ:	18:9 Copy of the Letter of Reply: “To you who have been beaten and admonished, tormented and calmed, tortured and subdued, lost and found [cf. Lk. 15.4], gone astray and converted, noticed and beloved by the Lord, to Tiridates king of Greater Armenia and queen Ashkhen and princess Khosrovidukht and all the populace of Greater Armenia - Leontius Archbishop and Metropolitan of great Caesarea and all the priestly clergy of the holy church, bishops, priests, deacons and people, greetings in the Lord:
18:10 Վասն կենսատու փրկութեանդ հասելոյ ձեզ յԱստուծոյ, որպէս մեզ պատմեցաւ, անպայման ուրախութեամբ գոհացաք զանզեղջական փառացն Քրիստոսի, եւ վասն սրբոց վկայիցդ Աստուծոյ որ ի ձերում միջի, յաշխարհիդ ձերում փառաւորեցան:	18:10 For the life-giving salvation bestowed on you by God, as has been narrated to us, with unbounded joy we have thanked the immutable glory of Christ, as also for the holy martyrs of God who were glorified among you, in your country:
18:11 Զի եւ դուք նայեցեալք յելս գնացից նոցա եւ նմանողք լեալ հաւատոց նոցա՝ փառաւորեսջիք, նոցա պսակաւքն պսակելով պսակեսջիք:	18:11 And may you, reflecting on the outcome of their labor and imitating their faith [cf. Heb. 13.7], also be glorified and crowned with their crowns:
18:12 Զի արարիչն ամենեցուն եւ ամենայն աշխարհաց, որ ընդ ամենեցուն հաճեալ զի առցեն զորդեգրութիւն, իւրով հաճոյական կամաւքն խրատէ զամենեսին, որով մխիթարեսցէ ի սնավաստակ աշխատութենէն, յիւրումն արքայութեանն հանգուսցէ զբեռնաւորսն զաշխատեալսն, զի լուծ նորա քաղցր է եւ բեռն իւր փոքրոգի. առ իւր թեւարկէ, վարդապետէ, զի իւրում հանգստեանն արժանիս արասցէ զամենեսին:	18:12 For the creator of everything and of all worlds, who wishes that all may receive adoption [cf. Eph. 1.5], by the pleasure of his own will advises everyone that he will give consolation from the toil of vain works, and in his kingdom give rest to those with burdens and those who have labored. ’For his yoke is sweet and his load is light. ’ [Matt. 11.28-30]. These he takes under his protection and instructs, in order that he may make everyone worthy of his rest:
18:13 Եւ վասն զի ոչ կանխեալ գիտացեալ ձեր զարժանն՝ վասն այսորիկ ած զանարժան գաւազանն ի վերայ ձեր, եւ իբրեւ ի քնոյ ընդոստուցեալ, զի գիտասջիք զզգաստութիւնն, որ արժանն է:	18:13 And because you did not previously realize what was worthy, therefore he brought this unworthy scourge upon you and awoke you as if from sleep that you might know the sobriety which was fitting:
18:14 Եւ զի ոչ իմացայք դուք զմարդկանն ի մարդկապէսն՝ գիտուն արար զձեզ ի չմարդկապէսն:	18:14 And because you did not understand what was human by human means, he made you aware by non-human means:
18:15 Եւ զոր յանգիտութեանն արհամարհեցէք՝ հաստատեաց զձեզ յանշարժ գիտութիւնն. զի վէմն իսկ որ ի շինողացդ անարգեալ՝ եղեւ նա ձեզ գլուխ անկեան:	18:15 And the man whom in your ignorance you despised has confirmed you in immovable knowledge. For the rock which was dis-honored by the builders became for you the chief cornerstone:
18:16 Զի զոր ուրացութեամբն բարկացուցէք՝ արտասուաւք հաշտեցուսջիք:	18:16 For him whom you angered by your denial, with tears you will placate:
18:17 Զի զոր, կափուցեալ զաչս ձեր, համարէիք խաւար՝ ծագեաց եբաց եւ լուսաւորեաց զտեսանելիս ձեր, մերկեաց ի ձէնջ զզգեցեալ զխաւարն հեթանոսութեան, եւ զճառագայթարձակ զգեցոյց զպատմուճանն:	18:17 He to whom you closed your eyes and considered as darkness [cf. Matt. 13.15] has shone forth and opened and illuminated your vision; he has stripped off from you the pagan darkness that enveloped you and put on you raiments of shining light:
18:18 Իսկ զոր համարեալ անմտութիւն, կորուսանել պանձայիք՝ նոյն ինքն ձեզ իմաստնացուցիչ տուաւ, եւ նոյն ինքն ձեզ գտիչ պարգեւեցաւ:	18:18 He whom you presumed in your boastful [cf. Lk. 18.9] ignorance to destroy, the same has been given you as teacher of wisdom and has been bestowed upon you as mentor:
18:19 Արդ՝ մեք իբրեւ տեսաք զայսպիսի այր հրաշալի եւ լուաք զմեծամեծ սքանչելիսն որ ի ձեռն սորա առ ձեզ կատարեցան՝ ընկղմեցաք ի խորութիւն սիրոյն Աստուծոյ իբրեւ ի ջուրս սաստիկս ալեաց բազմութեան, անհատական գովութեամբ, եւ ի վերայ այսորիկ՝ անդադար բերանով եւ անհանգիստ բարբառով զՏէր մեր զՅիսուս Քրիստոս, զբարերարն զսքանչելագործն զպարգեւաբաշխն աւրհնեցաք, եւ առ Աստուած հայրն ամենայնի գոհութիւնս մատուցաք, շնորհելով Գրիգորի զանապական պարգեւս սուրբ Հոգւոյն, որով եւ դուք արժանի լիջիք շնորհին ողջունի արքայութեանն երկնից:	18:19 Now when we saw this man who is so marvelous, and when we heard of the mighty wonders which were accomplished through him among you, we were submerged in the depths of God’s love as in the vast waters of the numberless waves; and with constant joy for this reason, and with unceasing mouth and unresting voice we blessed our Lord Jesus Christ, the benevolent, the worker of miracles and dispenser of gifts. And we offered thanksgiving to God the Father of all, by giving Gregory the incorruptible gifts of the holy Spirit, whereby you too might become worthy of the felicitous grace of the kingdom of heaven:
18:20 Եւ զմեզ, հեռի մարմնով, մերձ համարեալ հոգւով՝ յիշեցէք ի ձեր ի նորաթեք յաղաւթսդ, ի ձերում պարգեւեալ փրկութեանդ, մանաւանդ յորժամ զյիշատակ սրբոցդ խմբիցէք ձերով ուրախութեամբդ:	18:20 Now do you remember us, far off in the body but near in the spirit, in your neophyte prayers, in the salvation granted you, and especially when you gather in your joy to commemorate your saints:
18:21 Եւ հաստատեալ կացցէ վկայութիւն ի մէջ երկոցունց կողմանցս, զի պարգեւաբաշխութիւն նորոգ քահանայապետութեանդ ձերոյդ նահանգիդ առ ի մէնջ՝ կացցէ անշարժ յեկեղեցւոջս Կեսարու, ուստի եւ հանդերձեցաւ ձեզ պատրաստեալ՝ փրկութեան ձեռնադրութիւն:	18:21 And may the testimony between our two regions remain firm, that the gift of your new high priestly rank from us may remain immovably in our church of Caesarea, whence has been prepared for you the ordination of salvation:
18:22 Որով անապական պարգեւք խորհրդոյն ձեզ բաշխիցին վկայացեալ աջովդ, շնորհաւք նորոգութեան մկրտութեան եւ փրկական խաչին, եւ կենդանարար մարմնոյն եւ քաւիչ արեանն Քրիստոսի, եւ երանութեամբ բազմացելոց քահանայութեանց. որով եւ դուք լիջիք վերացեալք խառնեալք, աղաւթաբուղխք մշտնջենաւորք, ի զաւրս քրիստոսակեցոյց գնդին:	18:22 Thus, the incorruptible gifts of the sacrament will be distributed to you by the right hand of the martyred one, through the grace of the renewal of baptism and of the saving cross and of the life-giving body and expiatory blood of Christ, and through the blessing of the increasing priesthood. Thus, you will be raised and, making constant prayer, will be joined to the hosts of Christ’s company:
18:23 Ողջ լերուք ի Քրիստոս, եւ հանապազ վայելեսջիք ի փրկութեանն Տեառն:	18:23 Be well in Christ, and may you continually enjoy the salvation of the Lord:
