4:1 Յաւուրս ժամանակացն այնոցիկ զաւրաժողով լինէր իշխանն Գթաց, եւ բազում գունդս զաւրաց ժողովեալ՝ գայր տալ մարտ պատերազմի ընդ իշխանին Յունաց:

 4:1 It happened that in those same days the prince of the Goths mustered troops and, with numerous brigades of soldiers, came to do battle against the prince of the Byzantines:

4:2 Պատգամս յղէր աւրինակաւս այսուիկ, եթէ «Ընդէ՞ր բնաւ ելանեմք խառնամխի ի պատերազմ՝ սպառել զզաւրս մեր, եւ վտանգ եւ տագնապ միանգամայն աշխարհի հասուցանեմք:

 4:2 The ruler of the Goths sent a message with the following import: “Why should we arise to do battle in such numbers, waste our troops, and bring danger and crisis to our lands:

4:3 ես աւասիկ ախոյեան ելանեմ քեզ ի մերոց զաւրաց աստի, եւ դու ինձ ի յունականաց այտի. հասցուք եկեսցուք ի մարտի տեղի:

 4:3 Behold, I will come forth to you as a single combatant champion from my own forces here, and you as an individual should come against me from the Byzantine troops. We will go to a place of battle:

4:4 եթէ ես զքեզ յաղթահարեցից՝ Յոյնք ինձ հնազանդեսցին ի ծառայութիւն. եւ թէ դու ինձ յաղթեսցես՝ մեր կեանքս քեզ նուաճեսցին եւ հնազանդեսցին. եւ առանց արեան եւ կոտորածոյ լիցի շինութիւն կողմանցս երկոցունց:

 4:4 Should I conquer you, the Byzantines then will submit to me in service. On the other hand, if you defeat me, our lives shall be subject to you and we shall obey you. Thus, without shedding blood and causing destruction, prosperity will embrace both sides:

4:5 Եւ իբրեւ զայն ամենայն լուաւ թագաւորն Յունաց՝ երկեաւ. քանզի աւրինաւք կազմութեամբ, գունդ առ գունդ ճակատել ոչ առնուին յանձն:

 4:5 When the king of the Byzantines heard all this, he was frightened - because the Goths were unwilling to fight brigade against brigade in a normal fashion:

4:6 եւ ըստ պատգամին պատշաճի ոչ կարէր ունել յանձին. քանզի տկար էր յոսկերաց զաւրութեամբ. սրտաթափ եղեալ զարհուրեցաւ, քանզի ոչ գիտէր, զի՛նչ տացէ բանիցն պատասխանի:

 4:6 Nor was he able to agree to the proposal in the message, because he was weak, since his bones lacked strength to prevail in single combat. He was depressed and terrified because he did not know how to respond to the proposal:

4:7 Յայնմ ժամանակի հրաման տայր թագաւորն՝ հրովարտակս եւ դեսպանս առնել առ իշխանս եւ զաւրս զաւրութեան իւրոյ, զի ուր եւ իցեն՝ առ նա հասանիցեն վաղվաղակի:

 4:7 Then the king commanded that edicts and emissaries should be sent to the princes and troops of his realm wherever they might be, that they should come to him immediately:

4:8 Յայնմ ժամանակի իշխանք եւ զաւրք եւ նախարարք առ նա հասանէին վաղվաղակի:

 4:8 The princes, troops, and naxarars quickly arrived by him:

4:9 Առեալ եւ Լիկիանէ զբուն գունդն որ ընդ իւրով ձեռամբն էր՝ փութայր հասանէր ի տեղի պատերազմին՝ յանդիման լինել թագաւորին, եւ Տրդատէս ընդ նմա:

 4:9 Licinius took the main brigade, which was under his command and hastened to the place of battle near the king, and Trdat was with him:

4:10 Եւ մինչ դեռ գային գունդք զաւրացն՝ դէպ եղեւ նոցա գալ մտանել ի նեղագոյն տեղի մի, յառուամէջս այգեստանւոյն, ի փողոցամէջս համբարոցացն, առ դրունս քաղաքին. քանզի զդրունս քաղաքին աղխեալ էր, զի ժամ էր հասարակ գիշերոյ:

 4:10 While the brigades of troops were arriving, they happened to enter a narrow spot leading to the city gates. This area was located amidst the ditches of vineyards and the paths of storehouses. However, the city gates were closed since it was midnight:

4:11 Իբրեւ ոչ գտաւ խար երիվարաց զաւրուն բազմութեան դարման կերակրոյ մինչեւ ի մէջգիշեր՝ հայեցեալ տեսանէին ի զուարափակ քաղաքորմի միոջ:

 4:11 As it was the middle of the night, they did not find any forage for the horses of the large army. Looking around, they noticed that there was a haystack in an ox-stall inside the city wall:

4:12 զի խստահամբար մթերեալ էր. եւ ոչ ոք կարաց ձգել զձեռն իւր վասն որմոյն բարձրութեան:

 4:12 They could not get their hands on it because of the wall’s height:

4:13 Յայնժամ Տրդատէս ելեալ եւ իջեալ՝ հոսէր ընկենոյր բարդս բարդս ի մէջ զաւրացն մինչ ի լիութիւն բաւականի:

 4:13 It was then that Trdat climbed over the wall, descended, and threw back among the troops piles of hay, until there was enough:

4:14 Նա եւ զհամբարապանսն իսկ եւ բազումս ի շանց յայսկոյս որմոյն ընկենոյր ի մէջ զաւրացն, եւ ինքն անդրէն ելեալ իջանէր:

 4:14 He also took the forage’s guards and many guard dogs, and lowered them down among the troops on the other side of the wall:

4:15 Զայն ամենայն ոյժ պնդութեան տեսեալ Լիկիանէս զարմացաւ:

 4:15 Then he himself again ascended the wall and descended:

4:16 Իսկ իբրեւ այգն զառաւաւտն մերկացաւ՝ դրունք քաղաքին բացան, եւ զաւրքն ամենայն առ հասարակ ի ներքս մտանէին. եւ Լիկիանէս յանդիման լինէր թագաւորին, եւ ամենայն մեծամեծքն եւ սպարապետքն եւ զաւրագլուխքն եւ իշխանքն:

 4:16 When Licinius observed such a demonstration of strength, he was astonished. When day dawned, the gates of the city were opened and all the troops entered. Licinius went before the king, all the grandees, commanders-in-chiefs [sparapetkn], commanders of the troops, and princes:

4:17 Ապա կաց պատմեաց թագաւորն իշխանացն զամենայն պատգամս թագաւորին Գթաց:

 4:17 The king related to the princes the entire message of the king of the Goths:

4:18 Յայնժամ խաւսել սկսաւ Լիկիանէս ընդ արքային եւ ասէ. «Մի՛ ինչ զարհուրեսցի սիրտ տեառն իմոյ. զի գոյ աստ այր մի ի դրան քում, զի իրքդ այդ նովաւ վճարին. Տրդատէս անուն նորա, ի տոհմէ թագաւորին Հայոց աշխարհին:

 4:18 Then Licinius spoke to the king, saying: “Let the heart of my lord not be fearful at all. For here, in your court, there is a man who can deal with this matter. His name is Tiridates, and he is from the clan of the king of the land of the Armenians:

4:19 Եւ կաց պատմեաց զերեկորին զգործս քաջութեան նորա:

 4:19 Then Licinius narrated Trdat’s acts of bravery done during the evening:

4:20 Յայնժամ հրաման ետ, եւ ածին զՏրդատիոս յանդիման թագաւորին. եւ պատմեաց նմա կարգաւ զամենայն:

 4:20 Then he gave a command and they brought Tiridates into the king’s presence and told him everything in order:

4:21 Յայնժամ ժամ ետուն կազմութեան մարտի՝ առ ի ժամ վաղուի զմիմեանս տեսանել պատերազմաւ:

 4:21 After that they set an hour for holding the fight - in the morning the two combatants would battle each other:

4:22 Իսկ ի միւսում աւուրն ընդ այգն ընդ առաւաւտն հրամայեաց արկանել ծիրանիս. եւ զարդարեցին զՏրդատիոս ի զարդ կայսերական, արկեալ զնովաւ զնշան թագաւորութեանն:

 4:22 The next morning at dawn the king ordered that the royal purple garment should be put on Trdat. Thus, did they clothe Tiridates with the imperial adornment and place on him the royal symbol:

4:23 եւ ոչ ոք գիտէր վասն նորա. հրաման ել ամենեցուն, թէ ինքն իսկ կայսրն իցէ:

 4:23 No one knew the truth about him, and an order went out to everyone that this was indeed the emperor [kaysr] himself:

4:24 Եւ նորա առեալ զգունդն զաւրաց բազմութեան՝ ի ձայն փողոյ տագնապաւ յառաջ մատուցանէր մինչեւ յանդիման թշնամեացն:

 4:24 Trdat took a brigade of many troops and, to the sound of the trumpet, advanced rapidly until he was opposite the enemies:

4:25 Իբրեւ յանդիման եղեն միմեանց կայսերակերպն եւ թագաւորն՝ մտրակ ի կուշտ արարեալ երիվարացն ի միմեանս հասանէին. անդ յաղթահարէր կայսերակերպն զթագաւորն. ձերբակալ արարեալ՝ ածեալ յանդիման առաջի կայսերն կացուցանէր:

 4:25 Then Trdat, the man dressed like the emperor, and the Goth king whipped the flanks of their horses and reached each other. It was there that the man dressed like the emperor defeated the king. Arresting him, he led him before the emperor:

4:26 Յայնժամ մեծացոյց յոյժ թագաւորն զՏրդատիոս, եւ մեծամեծ պարգեւս ետ նմա. թագ կապեաց ի գլուխ նորա եւ ծիրանեաւք զարդարեալ մեծացոյց զնա, եւ կայսերակերպն զարդու շքեղացուցեալ մեծարեաց զնա:

 4:26 Then the king greatly exalted Tiridates and gave him very grand gifts. He placed a crown on his head exalting, adorning, and beautifying him with purple and imperial ornaments:

4:27 եւ գումարեաց ի ձեռս նորա զաւրս բազումս յաւգնականութիւն նմա, եւ արձակեաց յիւրական աշխարհն Հայոց:

 4:27 The Byzantine emperor assembled many troops and gave them to him to aid him, and then sent him to his own land, Armenia:

4:28 Եւ յետ մարտին յաղթութեան քաջութեանցն զոր արար՝ դարձեալ լինէր ի կողմանցն Յունաց Տրդատ արքայ Հայոց մեծաց:

 4:28 After the triumphant combat with its display of bravery, King Trdat of Greater Armenia returned from the Byzantine areas:

4:29 Խաղաց գնաց թագաւորն ի կողմանս Հայոց, եւ եկն եգիտ անդ զաւրս բազում Պարսից, զի զաշխարհն յինքեանս գրաւեալ էին ի ծառայութիւն:

 4:29 When the king arrived in the Armenian areas, he found many Persian troops there, since they had conquered that land and put it into subjection:

4:30 զբազումս կոտորէր, եւ զբազումս փախստականս արարեալ ի կողմանս Պարսից արկանէր. եւ զհայրենեացն տէրութիւն յինքն նուաճեաց, եւ զաւրացաւ ի վերայ սահմանաց նորա:

 4:30 He killed many of them and put many others to flight back to the Persian areas. He conquered his patrimonial lordship, making it his own, and strengthened its borders:
