2:26 Յի՞մ տեսեր զմեզ պակասագոյն քան զհարսն մեր. մի՛ բանիւք զփորձ առնուլ կամիս զմեր, այլ հանդէս արա քում չարութեանդ եւ մերում բարութեանս, եւ ամաչեցեալ գտանի հայրն քո սատանայ, ոչ միայն ի մէնջ, որ կատարելագոյնքս եմք, այլ եւ որ կարի փոքրիկն թուիցի քեզ՝ նա դիցէ վէրս սաստիկս յոգիս եւ մարմինս քո:

 2:26 In what respect did you regard us as inferior to our fathers? Do you not wish to test us by words? But make a review of your wickedness and our goodness, and your father Satan will be put to shame—not only by us who are the more perfect but also by him who seems to you the least, and the latter will inflict severe wounds on your soul and body:

2:27 Զայս իբրեւ լուաւ դահճապետն, սրտմտեալ բարկացաւ ի վերայ նոցա:

 2:27 When the chief-executioner heard this, he was greatly enraged against them:

2:28 Ետ քարշել չարագոյն քան զառաջինսն. եւ այնչափ սաստիկ քարշեցին, մինչեւ բազմաց կարծիք եղեն՝ թէ մեռան:

 2:28 He had them dragged about more cruelly than the previous martyrs. And so severely did they pull them around that many supposed they had died:

2:29 Իսկ իբրեւ ժամք երեք ի վերայ անցին, դարձեալ խաւսել սկսան երկոքեանն եւ ասեն. «Փոքր համարիմք զանարգանս զայս եւ առ ոչինչ զցաւս մարմնոյս առ մեծ սէրն Աստուծոյ, որով կատարեցան հարքն մեր հոգեւորք:

 2:29 But after three hours had passed, the two of them began to speak again, saying: “This indignity we regard as minor, and the pains of the body as nothing compared to the great love of God in which our spiritual fathers were martyred:

2:30 Հապա մի՛ դլար եւ մի՛ դադարեր, այլ զոր ինչ առ նոսայն արարեր, զնոյն եւ առ մեզ կատարեա:

 2:30 Come now, do not hesitate or linger; but what you did to them, carry out the same on us:

2:31 Եթէ չարագոյն թուին քեզ գործքն նոցա, կրկին եւ զմերս համարեսջիք. զի նոքա բանիւք հրամայէին, եւ մեք գործովք զարդիւնսն կատարէաք:

 2:31 If their deeds seem very wicked to you, reckon ours doubly so; for they gave orders in words, but we brought them to fruition by deeds:

2:32 Յայնժամ եւս առաւել զայրագնեցաւ ի վերայ նոցա, եւ հրամայեաց զմահու գան հարկանել:

 2:32 Then he was even more enraged against them and ordered them to be bastinadoed to death:

2:33 Եւ առ մի մի ի նոցանէ փոխեցաւ վեց վեց այր ի դահճացն. եւ մինչդեռ կիսամեռք յերկիր անկեալ դնէին, հրամայեաց զերկոցունց ականջս մաւտ կտրել:

 2:33 For each of them six of the executioners took turns. And while they were lying half-dead on the ground, he ordered the ears of them both to be cut off close:

2:34 Եւ այնպէս բրեցին, որպէս թէ չիցէ լեալ ի տեղւոջն:

 2:34 and they hacked them off as if they had never been there:

2:35 Զարթեան իբրեւ ի քնոյ ի սաստիկ հարուածոցն, սկսան աղաչելով պաղատանս մատուցանել, եւ ասեն. «Աղաչեմք զքեզ, քաջ զինուոր թագաւորին. կա՛մ կատարեա զմեզ իբրեւ զհարսն մեր մահուամբ, եւ կամ արա զպատուհասդ ըստ աւրինակի վերջնոցս:

 2:35 Recovering from these severe torments as if from sleep, they began to offer supplications, saying: “We beg you, valiant soldier of the king, either put us to death like our fathers, or inflict your punishments following the example of these most recent martyrs:

2:36 Զի ահա լսելիք մեր առողջացան զանախտաւորութիւն երկնաւոր, իսկ հոտոտելիքս դեռ եւս աստէն ի տեղւոջ կան յանցս չարչարանաց. մի՛ կիսապարգեւ առներ զմեզ յերկնից բարութենէն:

 2:36 For behold our ears have received a heavenly healing and our noses are still in place during these tortures. Do not deprive us of half that heavenly blessing:

2:37 Սրբեցեր զմարմինս մեր քարշելով, եւ զլսելիս մեր կտրելով. սրբեա եւ զռնգունս մեր հատանելով. քանզի որչափ տգեղս առնես զմեզ երկրաւորաւս, գեղեցկագոյնս առնես զմեզ երկնաւորաւն:

 2:37 Sanctify our bodies by dragging them and our ears by cutting them off; sanctify also our noses by removing them. For as much as you render us ugly in an earthly fashion, the more beautiful you make us in a heavenly fashion:

2:38 Ետ պատասխանի հեզութեամբ դահճապետն եւ ասէ. «Եթէ եւ այլ յամեմ ես առ ձեզ մաւտ կալով, կարծեմ՝ եթէ եւ աշակերտէք զիս ի ձեր յամառութիւնդ:

 2:38 The chief-executioner replied mildly: “If I remain any longer beside you, I think that you will teach me your obstinacy:

2:39 Զի ահա արդ եւ զխորհուրդս արքունի ի վեր հանեմ ձեզ:

 2:39 So now I shall reveal to you the king’s intentions:

2:40 Ցայդ վայր եղեւ հրաման պատուհասիդ ձերոյ, եւ ի վերայ դորին պատուհասի՝ երթալ ձեզ յԱսորեստան, եւ լինել ձեզ մշակ յարքունիս. զի որ ընդ ձեզ հայեսցի՝ մի՛ ի դմին յամառութեան պնդեսցի ընդդէմ հրամանաց թագաւորին:

 2:40 Only thus far was it ordered to punish you; as further punishment you are to go to Asorestan to be slaves on the royal estates, lest anyone on seeing you may persist in the same obstinate opposition to the king’s orders:

2:41 Ասեն ցնա երանելիքն. «Դու զմեր երկիրս կիսագործ թողեր. մեք յարքունի երկիրն կէս մարմնովք մերովք ոչ վաստակեմք:

 2:41 The blessed ones said to him: “You have left our land half-tilled. We will not cultivate the royal land with half our bodies:

2:42 Իբրեւ զայս լուաւ դահճապետն, աղաչեաց զզինուորսն, որ տանէին զնոսա, եւ ասէ. «Միայն աստի դուք առէք գնացէք, եւ հասեալ յԱսորեստան՝ ուր կամ իւրեանց է եւ շրջեսցին:

 2:42 When the executioner heard this, he called the soldiers who were leading them and note: “Merely take them away from here. When you reach Asorestan let them go wherever they wish:

2:43 Այս են Հայոց խոստովանողք կատարեալք, որ զխեղութիւնն եւ զչարչարանսն խնդութեամբ ընկալան յանձինս իւրեանց:

 2:43 These were the eminent Armenian confessors, who had joyfully accepted mutilation and tortures:

2:44 Եւ վասն զի վրիպեցին ի սուրբ մահուանէն, սգով եւ տրտմութեամբ երթային զերկայնութիւն ճանապարհին:

 2:44 But because they had been deprived of a holy death, they went their long journey in mourning and sadness:

2:45 Ոչ ծանր թուէին նոցա կապանք ոտիցն եւ ձեռացն, իբրեւ զայն՝ թէ ընդէ՞ր ոչ եղաք արժանի հաւասարել ընդ քաջ նահատակսն:

 2:45 The chains on their feet and hands did not seem as heavy to them as the question of why they had not been worthy to equal the brave martyrs:

2:46 Եւ իբրեւ տարան հասուցին զնոսա յերկիրն Բաբելացւոց, ի գաւառ մի, զոր Շահուղն անուանեն, թէպէտ եւ էին յարքունի պատուհասին, սակայն եւ յայտ եւ գաղտ մեծապէս ընկալեալ եղեն ի բնակչաց աշխարհին:

 2:46 After they had been brought to Babylonia, to a province called Shahul, although they were the object of royal punishment, nonetheless both openly and secretly they were greatly honored by the inhabitants of the country:

2:47 Սակայն երանելիքն եւ յայնմ յոյժ տրտմագին էին, իբր այն՝ եթէ սակաւ վաստակեցաք եւ մեծապէս հանգչիմք. եւ հանապազ ի նմին զղջման կային:

 2:47 However, the blessed ones at this too were greatly saddened as if supposing “we have labored little and are taking much ease.” And they continually felt the same regrets:

2:48 Եւ անդէն թեւակոխէին տեսանել զսուրբ կապանսն նախարարացն, լինել սպասաւոր մարմնաւոր պիտոյից նոցա:

 2:48 There they endeavored to see the holy bonds of the nobles and to serve their bodily needs:

2:49 Իմացուցին զայս մեծամեծաց աշխարհին, որք էին ի նմին սուրբ ուխտի քրիստոնէութեանն:

 2:49 This they indicated to the magnates of the land who belonged to the same holy covenant of Christianity:

2:50 Եւ հաւանեալ ամենեցուն մեծամեծաց եւ փոքունց՝ ազդ առնել ամենայն երկրին, զի հաճոյ թուեսցի ամենեցուն՝ ի ձեռն մարմնաւոր պիտոյիցն կցորդ լինել սուրբ կապելոցն ի հեռաւոր աւտարութեանն:

 2:50 All agreed, the greatest and the least, to inform the whole land that all who so desired could share with the holy prisoners in distant exile by caring for their bodily needs:
