1:0 ԴԱՐՁԵԱԼ ՎԱՍՆ ԽՈՍՏՈՎԱՆՈՂ ԱՇԱԿԵՐՏԱՑ ՆՈՑՈՒՆՑ:

 1:0 Further, Concerning Their Disciples the Confessors:

1:1 Իսկ աշակերտք երանելեացն ի կապանս կային ի ներքս ի քաղաքին. եկն դահճապետ մի արքունի եւ եհան զնոսա ի քաղաքէ անտի արտաքս:

 1:1 Now the disciples of the blessed ones remained inside the city in bonds. A royal chief-executioner came and brought them outside the city:

1:2 Եհան ի նմին քաղաքէ ասորեստանեայս քրիստոնեայս արս հինգ, քանզի եւ նոքա ի կապանս էին վասն անուանն Քրիստոսի. եհարց ցնոսա բանիւք, եւ ոչ հաւանեցան երկիր պագանել արեգական:

 1:2 He also removed from the city five Christians from Asorestan, for they too were in bonds for the name of Christ. He interrogated them, but they did not agree to worship the sun:

1:3 Չարչարեաց զնոսա գանիւ, եւ նոքա եւս առաւել ի նոյն միտս պնդեցան. կտրեաց զնոցա ունչս եւ զականջս, եւ ետ տանել յԱսորեստան, զի կայցեն ի մշակութեան արքունի:

 1:3 He tortured them with the bastinado, but they persisted in the same intention even more strongly. He cut off their noses and ears, and had them taken to Asorestan to be set to labor on the royal estates:

1:4 Երթային մեծաւ յաւժարութեամբ, իբրեւ այն՝ թէ մեծ պարգեւս գտեալ ի թագաւորէն:

 1:4 They went very readily as if they had received great gifts from the king:

1:5 Արդ եկն դարձեալ նոյն դահճապետն առ աշակերտս սուրբ սպանելոցն, ընտրեաց երկուս ի նոցանէ, որ համեստագոյնք էին, առեալ մեկուսի յայլոցն եւ ասէ ցնոսա. «Զի՞նչ անուանք են ձեր:

 1:5 Then the same chief-executioner came again to the disciples of the holy martyrs. Choosing two of them who were the most modest, he took them aside from the others and note: “What are your names:

1:6 Ետ պատասխանի մինն եւ ասէ. «Առ ի ծնողաց ինձ Խորէն, եւ դմա Աբրահամ. իսկ ըստ շնորհատուր կարգիս՝ ծառայք Քրիստոսի եմք եւ աշակերտք երանելեացն, զոր սպանէք:

 1:6 One of them replied: “By my parents I was named Khoren, and he Abraham. But in our spiritual rank we are servants of Christ and disciples of the blessed ones whom you killed:

1:7 Ետ պատասխանի դահճապետն եւ ասէ ցնոսա. «Իսկ արդ զի՞նչ գործ է ձեր, եւ կամ բնաւ ո՞յր իսկ ածեալ է զձեզ այսր:

 1:7 The chief-executioner responded, saying to them: “What then is your business, and who brought you here:

1:8 Առ այս ետ պատասխանի Աբրահամ եւ ասէ. «Զայդ ձեզ ի վարդապետաց մերոց արժան էր ուսանել. զի ոչ դուզնաքեայք ոք էին նոքա, այլ ունէին ստացուածս հայրենիս ըստ արժան բաւականին, ըստ նմին եւ սպասաւորս, էր որ իբրեւ զմեզ, եւ էր որ լաւագոյն քան զմեզ. որոց սնուցեալ եւ ուսուցեալ էր, ընդ նոսա եմք եկեալ:

 1:8 To this Abraham replied: “That you should have learned from our teachers, because they were not insignificant persons but had ancestral possessions of worthy sufficiency, and likewise servants; some were like us and others of superior station. We came with those who nourished and instructed us:

1:9 Քանզի եւ պատուէր իսկ ունիմք յաստուածատուր աւրինացն մերոց՝ սիրել զնոսա իբրեւ զսուրբ ծնողս, եւ սպաս տանել նոցա իբրեւ հոգեւոր տերանց:

 1:9 For we have a command from our divinely-given religion to love them like holy fathers and to serve them like spiritual lords:

1:10 Ցասեաւ դահճապետն եւ ասէ. «Իբրեւ զանխրատ եւ զաներկիւղ ստամբակս խաւսիս:

 1:10 The chief-executioner was angry and note: “You speak like undisciplined and defiant rebels:

1:11 Մինչդեռ ի խաղաղութեան եւ յաշխարհի էիք, բարիոք էր. յորժամ գրուահ եղեն նոքա յիրս արքունի եւ մահապարտ գտան ըստ գործոց իւրեանց, ձեզ չէր արժան ամենեւին մաւտ երթալ առ նոսա:

 1:11 While you were at peace and in your own country, all was well. But when they became criminally involved in royal affairs and were condemned to death for their deeds, you should not at all have gone near them:

1:12 Ո՞չ տեսանէք ի մեծ կարաւանիս. յորժամ ոք ի պատուաւորացն ի դիպահոջն արքունի լինիցի, սգոյ հանդերձ ագանի, եւ զատեալ եւ որոշեալ ի բացէ նստի միայնիկ, եւ ամենեւին հուպ ոչ ոք իշխէ երթալ առ նոսա:

 1:12 Do you not see in the great camp that when some honorable person is arrested by royal orders, he is clothed in dark garments, is set apart in solitary confinement, and no one at all is allowed to go near him:

1:13 Եւ դու այդպէս իբրեւ զանյանցի աշակերտ պարծելով խաւսիս:

 1:13 Yet you speak thus, boasting as if you were a disciple of an innocent man:

1:14 Առ այս ետ պատասխանի Խորէն եւ ասէ. «Ոչ ձեր կարգդ անիրաւ է եւ ոչ մերս ստութեամբ. նախարարն յանցաւոր՝ ուստի զպատիւն գտեալ էր, այնպէս պարտ էր նմա հպատակ լինել, զի ի պատուոյն վերայ եւ այլ եւս պարգեւս մեծամեծս գտանէր ի նմանէ:

 1:14 To this Khoren replied, saying: “Your position is not unjust, nor ours false. The guilty noble should so serve him from whom he received honor that he may receive from him even greater presents above his rank:

1:15 Արդ փոխանակ զի զայն չարար, ձախողակի յետս ընդդէմքն պատահեաց նմա:

 1:15 But in return for not doing that, untoward consequences befell him:

1:16 Եւ մեր վարդապետքն եթէ առ Աստուած յանցուցեալ էին, եւ կամ առ թագաւորն մեղուցեալ ինչ էին, նոյն աւրինակ եւ մեք առ նոսա առնէաք. ոչ յաշխարհի մաւտ երթայաք, եւ ոչ ի տար աշխարհ այսր զհետ նոցա գնայաք:

 1:16 If our teachers had been guilty toward God or had sinned against the king in some way, we would have acted in similar fashion toward them; we would not have gone near them at home, nor would we have followed them abroad:

1:17 Արդ քանզի առ երկոսին կողմանսն արդարութեամբ կեցեալ են, եւ դուք զուր տարապարտուց սպանէք զնոսա, մեք արդ եւս առաւել սպասաւորեմք սուրբ ոսկերաց նոցա:

 1:17 However, because they behaved justly in both respects yet you killed them for no reason and unjustly, so we shall revere even more their holy bones:

1:18 Ասէ ցնա դահճապետն. «Ես յառաջագոյն իսկ ասացի՝ եթէ կարի ստամբակ ոմն ես դու. ահա յայտ եղեւ աւադիկ, եթէ յամենայն վնասս նոցա խառն էք դուք:

 1:18 The chief-executioner said to him: “I said earlier that you are a very rebellious person. It has now become quite clear that you are involved in all their crimes:

1:19 Աբրահամ ասէ. «Յո՞ր վնաս:

 1:19 Abraham note: “In what crime:

1:20 Դահճապետն ասէ. «Առաջին ի մահ մոգացն, ապա եւ յայլսն ամենայն:

 1:20 The chief-executioner note: “First in the death of the magi, and then in all the other things:

1:21 Աբրահամ ասէ. «Այդ ոչ միայն ի մէնջ է, այլ ըստ կարգի եւ ձերոց աւրինացդ. թագաւորք ձեզ տան հրաման, եւ դուք ի ձեռն ձերոց սպասաւորացդ գործէք:

 1:21 Abraham note: “That is not only our responsibility but (occurred) in regular order and in accordance with your laws. The kings give you an order and you carry it out through your servants:

1:22 Դահճապետն ասէ. «Ի Միհր աստուած երդուեալ իմ. խստագոյն եւս խաւսիս քան զվարդապետսն քո. յայտ է եթէ վնասակարագոյնք եւս էք դուք:

 1:22 The chief-executioner note: “I swear by the god Mihr, you speak more stubbornly than your teachers. It is clear that you are even more criminal:

1:23 Արդ ոչ է հնար ձեզ ապրել ի մահուանէ, բայց եթէ երկիր պագանէք արեգական, եւ կատարիցէք զկամս աւրինաց մերոց:

 1:23 So, it is not right for you to escape death unless you worship the sun and perform what our religion demands:

1:24 Խորէն ասէ. «Ցայժմ իբրեւ զմարդ չարախաւսէիր, եւ արդ իբրեւ զշուն անպիտան ընդ վայր հաջես:

 1:24 Khoren note: “Up to now you were uttering slanders like a man, but now you are uselessly barking like a dog:

1:25 Եթէ գոյր արեգական ականջք, դու տայիր նմա թշնամանս դնել. արդ նա բնութեամբ անզգայ է, եւ դու չարութեամբ անզգայագոյն քան զնա:

 1:25 If the sun had ears you would be insulting it. But by nature, it is without sensation, and you in your cruelty are more unfeeling than it:
