11:0 Յաղագս մեծի պատերազմին Պարսից եւ Հայոց ընդ միմեանս, եւ անկանելոյ ի պատերազմին մեծի զօրավարին Վաչէի, եւ մահուան թագաւորին Խոսրովու, եւ փոխելոյ յաշխարհէ հայրապետին Վրթանայ:

 11:0 The great war the Iranians and the Armenians fought with each other, the fall of the great general Vache in that battle, the death of king Xosrov, and the translation from this world of the patriarch Vrtanes:

11:1 Եւ յետ այսորիկ յաւել եւս լինել մարտ խստութեամբ պատերազմի ի մէջ Պարսից եւ Հայոց ընդ միմեանս. զի ժողովեցան հասին կուտեցան առնուլ զաշխարհն հայաստան երկրին:

 11:1 After this there was an even more intense war between the Iranians and Armenians, for the Iranians had massed and arrived to take the land of the country of Armenia:

11:2 Ապա ժողովէր սպարապետն զօրավարն Հայոց մեծաց Վաչէ զազատախումբ բանակ նախարարակոյտ զօրացն:

 11:2 Then Vache, sparapet and general of Greater Armenia, assembled the azataxumb army of naxararakoyt troops:

11:3 Եւ ելանէր տայր ընդ զօրսն Պարսից պատերազմ, եւ լինէր անհնարին կոտորուած յերկոցունց կողմանցն, եւ բազում ծախ մեծամեծ աւագանւոյն կոտորելոցն:

 11:3 He arose and did battle with the Iranian troops and there was unbelievable destruction on both sides, including the destruction of many grandee nobles:

11:4 Անկանէր ի պատերազմին յայնմիկ մեծ սպարապետն Հայոց Վաչէ. եւ լինէր ամենայն աշխարհին սուգ անհնարին, զի բազում անգամ էր տեառն փրկութիւն տուեալ Հայոց ի ձեռն նորա:

 11:4 In this battle Vache, the great sparapet of Armenia, fell and there was incredible mourning throughout the entire land, for many times the Lord had saved the Armenians through him:

11:5 Ապա ժողովէր եպիսկոպոսապետն Վրթանէս, մխիթարէր զամենեսեան, եւ զինքնին թագաւորն զԽոսրով, եւ զօրսն ամենայն, որք բազում անձկայրեաց տրտմութեամբք եւ արտասուակաթ ողբովք եւ ծանրաթախիծ հոգով, մեծաւ կոծովք եւ անհնարին աշխարանօք պաշարեալք, զգնացելոցն կարիս մնացելոցն համարեալ` սգային:

 11:5 Archbishop Vrtanes assembled and consoled everyone, including king Xosrov himself and all the troops who were taken with heart-rending sorrow, tearful laments, burdensome care, great sobbings and unbelievable mourning. Considering the departed and the survivors, they mourned:

11:6 Զորս մատուցեալ սփոփէր զնոսա մեծն Վրթանէս, եւ ասէր:

 11:6 The great Vrtanes comforted them, saying:

11:7 Մխիթարեցարո՛ւք ի Քրիստոս. վասն զի մանաւանդ որք մեռանն, նոքա յաղագս աշխարհի եւ եկեղեցեաց եւ աստուածագործ օրինացն տուչութեան, զի մի՛ գերեալ քանդեսցի աշխարհս, եւ սուրբ եկեղեցիքն աւերեսցին, եւ կամ մարտիրոսք անարգեսցին, եւ կամ սուրբ սպասքն ի ձեռս պղծոցն եւ անօրինացն անկցին, եւ սուրբ ուխտն այլայլեսցի, եւ որդիք մկրտութեան գերութեամբ անկցին ի պէսպէս պղծութիւնս անօրէնութեան կարգաց պաշտամանց:

 11:7 Be consoled in Christ. For those who have died died for our land, churches and God-given faith, so that our land not be enslaved or demolished, so that the churches not be polluted, that the martyrs not be dishonored, the church vessels not fall into the hands of foul, unbelieving men, that the blessed covenant not be corrupted, that the baptized people not be taken captive or be subjected to the various obscenities of the religion of the unbelievers:

11:8 Եւ եթէ զաշխարհս ունիցին արդեւք թշնամիքն, եւ զիւրեանց զանօրէն զանկրօն զանաստուած կրօնիցն զօրէնս աստ արդեւք հաստատէին. որ, զոր խնդրեմքս, քա՛ւ եւ մի՛ լիցի:

 11:8 Should the enemy capture our land they will implant here their impious, unbelieving, godless orders. We hope this will never happen:

11:9 Իսկ մեր բարեպաշտութեան նահատակք ի վերայ այսորիկ ճգնեալ պատերազմաւ, զչար պահեալ հեռացուցեալ հալածեալ յաշխարհէ` մեռան, զի մի՛ յայսպիսի աստուածապաշտ եւ աստուածասէր աշխարհ անօրէնութիւն մտեալ, չարի կամացն ի ծառայութիւն արկցէ, եւ զբազում ոգիս ջերմեռանդն սիրով բնութեանն ի միմեանց քակտեալ քայքայեսցէ:

 11:9 Our pious martyrs waged war for this and died chasing out and expelling evil from our land, so that faithlessness not enter this pious and God-loving land and that it not turn to serving the will of evil, and that many souls which are bound together with fervent, sincere love not be separated from each other:

11:10 Իսկ սոքա մինչդեռ կենդանի էին, արդար վաստակօք ի վերայ այսորիկ վաստակեցան. եւ ի մահուն իւրեանց զմիամտութեանն հաստատութեանն զանձինս փոխանակ տալով ընդ ճշմարտութեանն տեառն, մատուցին ի վերայ եկեղեցեաց, եւ ի վերայ մարտիրոսաց, եւ ի վերայ ուխտին սրբութեան օրինացն, եւ ի վերայ կարգաց հաւատոցն, եւ ի վերայ ուխտին քահանայութեան, եւ ի վերայ անթիւ ի նոր ի Քրիստոս մկրտելոցն, ի վերայ բնակի տեառն աշխարհիս:

 11:10 While they were still living, they labored with just labor for these things. In death, they held firmly their faithfulness and sacrificed their lives for the divine truth, churches, martyrs, the religion of the blessed covenant, orders of the faith, priestly covenant, for the countless new baptisms in Christ’s name and for the army of the lord of the land:

11:11 Որք այնմ ամենայնի փոխանակ զանձինս իւրեանց ոչ խնայեցին, ընդ վկայս Քրիստոսի է նոցա համար պատուոյ:

 11:11 Those who did not spare their lives for all this must be exalted together with those who sacrificed themselves for Christ:

11:12 Արդ մի՛ լացցուք զնոսա, այլ պատուեսցուք ընդ ճշմարտութեանն, առ նահատակսն դիցուք ընդ աշխարհ օրէնս յաւիտեանս յաւիտենից, զի ամենայն ոք զսոցա յիշատակ քաջութեան իբրեւ Քրիստոսի նահատակաց անխափան կատարեսցէ:

 11:12 So let us not mourn them but revere them worthily with the martyrs. Let us stipulate an eternal order throughout our entire land so that everyone will commemorate their good memory without fail as Christ’s martyrs:

11:13 Եւ մեք տօնս արասցուք, եւ ուրախ լիցուք. զի Աստուած այսոքիւք հաճեսցի ընդ մեզ, յայսմ հետէ խաղաղութիւն շնորհեսցէ:

 11:13 We shall celebrate the feast and be glad that through them God has found us agreeable and hereafter will grant us peace:

11:14 Եւ եդ օրէնս ընդ աշխարհն մեծ քահանայապետն Վրթանէս` զնոցա առնել զյիշատակն ամ յամէ. եւ որք փոխանակ աշխարհին փրկութեան մեռանիցին ի նմանութիւն նոցա, եդ կանոն` յիշել զսոսա առ սուրբ սեղանն Աստուծոյ ի ժամ պատարագին, յորժամ զանուանս սրբոցն կարգիցեն, եւ ապա զկնի նոցա զնոցայն. եւ մնացելոցն անկելոցն գութ եւ խնամ կալցին:

 11:14 The great chief-priest Vrtanes promulgated a law throughout the land that the martyrs should be remembered every year on a specific day and he made a canon that the people who had been slain for the salvation of the land should be remembered at the blessed altar of God during the mass after the names of the saints were recited, and that the survivors of the fallen should be cared for:

11:15 Զի սոքա, ասէ, ի նմանութիւն Յուդայ եւ Մատաթեայ Մակաբէի անկան ի ճակատ պատերազմի, եւ նմանութիւն եղբարց նոցա:

 11:15 For, he said, they fell in battle like Juda and Mattathias Maccabaei and their brothers:

11:16 Սակայն զՎաչէի զօրավարի փոքրիկ մանգիկ մի զնորուն զորդի ի հայրենի բարձ գահուն մատուցանէին, որում անուն էր յանուն հաւուն իւրոյ Արտաւազդ:

 11:16 General Vache had a son who was a very little boy, named after his grandfather, Artawazd. They placed him on the pillow of his patrimonial throne:

11:17 Առաջի թագաւորին զհօրն պատիւն ի գլուխն դնէին, եւ զսպարապետութեան նորուն տեղի. զի կարի որդի վաստակաւորի էր, եւ ի վաստակաւոր ազգէ. զի այլ յազգին ոչ գտաւ հօժկու, զի ի մեծ պատերազմին մեռան:

 11:17 and in the presence of the king they placed his father’s patiw on his head and put him in the sparapetutiwn of his father. For Artawazd was the son of a very meritorious individual, and of a very meritorious azg; and furthermore, there was no other individual in that azg who was robust, since they had died in the great war:

11:18 Եւ զզօրավարութեան զգործ յանձն առնէին Արշաւրայ կամսարականի` իշխանին Շիրակայ եւ արշարունեաց գաւառին, եւ Անդովկայ իշխանին Սիւնեաց. զի նոքա փեսայք էին տանն մամիկոնեան տոհմին:

 11:18 The affairs of the generalship were assumed by Arshawir Kamsarakan, prince of Shirak and the district of Arsharunik, and Andovk, prince of Siwnik, since they were brothers-in-law of the tun of the Mamikonean tohm:

11:19 Եւ հրաման ետուն մեծ եպիսկոպոսապետի Վրթանէս` հանդերձ թագաւորաւն` Արշաւրայ եւ Անդովկայ սնուցանել զպատանեակն զԱրտաւազդ, զի կացցէ ի տեղի նախնեացն իւրոց եւ հօր իւրոյ, գործ քաջութեան գործեսցէ ամենատեառնն Քրիստոսի, եւ առաջի իւրոյ մարմնաւոր բնակ տերանց արշակունեաց քաջ արանց, եւ տան եւ կենաց. եւ խնամակալ լիցի այրեաց եւ որբոց, եւ զնորուն գործ քաջութեան սպարապետութեան անուանի զօրավարութեան յաջորդեսցէն զամենայն աւուրս կենաց իւրոց:

 11:19 The great archbishop Vrtanes and the king ordered Arshawir and Andovk to raise the lad Artawazd so that he might occupy the position of his ancestors and of his father and accomplish deeds of bravery for Christ, the Lord of all, and for the brave men of his natural earthly Arsakuni lords, for their tun and lives; and so that throughout the entire course of his life he would look after widows and orphans and succeed to the acts of bravery of the sparapetutiwn and the renowned generalship:

11:20 Ապա յետ այսորիկ փոխեալ լինէր քաջ արանցն աշխարհաշէնն Խոսրով, թագաւորն Հայոց մեծաց:

 11:20 After this the world-building brave Xosrov, king of Greater Armenia, died:

11:21 Ժողովեալ, աշխար եդեալ, լացին ամենայն սահմանք աշխարհաց գաւառաց Հայոց մեծաց. եւ տարան առ իւր նախնիսն յԱնին յԵկեղեաց գաւառն Դարանաղեաց:

 11:21 People assembled from all the lands and districts of Greater Armenia to mourn and weep, and they transported Xosrov to Ani of Daranaghik, in the district of Ekegheats, by his ancestors:

11:22 Եւ յետ սորա փոխեցաւ եւս յաշխարհէ մեծ քահանայապետն Վրթանէս. եւ ժողովեցան ամենայն աշխարհն Հայոց, եւ մեծաւ պաշտմամբ, սաղմոսիւք եւ երգովք հոգեւորօք, կանթեղօք եւ մոմեղինօք եւ խնկածու հոտովք, արքունական կառօք զսուրբն Վրթանէս, անհնարին բեկմամբ` վասն իւրեանց յայնմ բնակ տեառնէն կամ ի հոգեւոր վարդապետութենէն որբ մնալոյ, մեծաւ լալեաց տրտմութեամբ մինչեւ ի գեւղն Թորդան ի Դարանաղեաց գաւառն յուղարկէին:

 11:22 Following him, the great chief priest Vrtanes departed this world. Then the entire land of Armenia assembled and with great service, with psalms and spiritual songs, with lamps, candles, fragrant incenses, and royal wagons [arkunakan karhok], those who were left orphaned of their natural lord and their spiritual vardapet accompanied Vrtanes’ body with sorrowful weeping to the village of Tordan in Daranaghik district:

11:23 Եւ անդ առ մեծի հայրապետին Գրիգորի զսորա սուրբ զոսկերսն հանգուցանէին. եւ զմշակատար զսորա կենդանի յիշատակն ի վերայ կատարեալ, դառնային:

 11:23 It was there, by the tomb of the great patriarch Gregory that they laid his holy bones to rest. After celebrating his perpetual living memory, they returned home:
