35:0 Յաղագս թէ ո՛րպէս ի բանս չարախորհուրդս եւ անմիտ մարդկան ելեալ թագաւորն Հայոց Վարազդատ, զզօրավարն Հայոց Մուշեղ սպանանէր:

 35:0 How the Armenian king Varazdat heeded the words of malicious and senseless men and killed Mushegh, the general of Armenia:

35:1 Այլ իբրեւ տեսանէին զթագաւորն Հայոց Վարազդատ մեծ նախարարքն Հայոց` թէ մանուկ բանսերթուկ է, զչար ի բարոյ որոշել չգիտէ, սկսան այնուհետեւ ըստ կամաց իւրեանց վարել զթագաւորն. որպէս եւ կամէին, բանիւք իւրեանց տանէին եւ բերէին զնա:

 35:1 When the great naxarars of Armenia saw that king Varazdat was a gullible youth, unable to differentiate good from bad, they began to manipulate the king in accordance with their wishes. With their words they led him around, any way they wanted:

35:2 Նա առաւել ունկն դնէր մանկտոյն` որ ի տիոց հասակակիցք էին նորա, առաւել քան զծերոցն իմաստնոց` որք կարող էին զօգտակար խրատն մատուցանել նմա:

 35:2 Varazdat was more attentive to what youths his own age said, than to what wise old people who could have given beneficial advice offered him:

35:3 Այլ Բատ, որ նահապետն էր ազգին Սահռունեաց տոհմին, դայեակ սնուցիչ թագաւորին Վարազդատայ, կամեցաւ նա զգործ զօրավարութեան սպարապետութեանն Մուշեղայ յինքն յափշտակել ի նմանէ:

 35:3 Bat, the nahapet of the azg of the Saharhuni tohm, was the dayeak-nourisher of king Varazdat. He wanted to appropriate for himself Mushegh’s position of general-sparapet:

35:4 Վասն այսորիկ սկսաւ քսիս մատուցանել զնմանէն առ թագաւորին Վարազդատայ առ իւրում սանուն, եւ ասել` թէ ի սկզբան ի նախնեացն հետէ զձեր Արշակունեաց տոհմին Մամիկոնէից է կորուսեալ, զի հակառակորդք ձեր դոքա լեալ են ի բնէ անտի. եւ համակ զերկիրս Հայոց դոցա է կերեալ, մանաւանդ Մուշեղի. մանաւանդ զի այր չար է եւ նենգաւոր:

 35:4 Consequently, he began to slander him to his san (“foster-son”) king Varazdat, saying: “From the time of the first ancestors onward, the Mamikoneans have been ruining your Arsacid tohm, for they have been your adversaries from the start. They have always been consuming the country of Armenia. This is especially true of Mushegh, who is a wicked and duplicitous man:

35:5 Զի սիրելի է ի թշնամեաց ձերոց, եւ ատելի սիրելեաց ձերոց. եւ համակ ընդ ձեզ նենգաւ է գնացեալ, երկմտութեամբ եւ դժխեմութեամբ:

 35:5 Your enemies love him and those dear to you hate him. In his dealings with you, he had always acted treacherously, duplicitously, and maliciously:

35:6 Զի ո՞չ այն Մուշեղ է, որ ի թագաւորութեան ժամանակ Պապայ ի պատերազմունսն քանիցս անգամ ձեռնահաս եղեւ սպանանել զՇապուհ արքայն Պարսից, եւ ոչ եսպան, այլ արձակեաց զթշնամին. եւ երբեմն զկանայս Շապհոյ թագաւորին ի բուռն էարկ, եւ խնամոտ գթով ժանուարօք արձակեաց զնոսա զհետ Շապհոյ:

 35:6 For is Mushegh not the one who, during the reign of Pap, during the Iranian battles, could have slain king Shapuh of Iran several times, but did not? Rather, he released the enemy. On one occasion he got hold of king Shapuh’s women, but sent them back to Shapuh in palanquins with care:

35:7 Ո՞չ այդ այն Մուշեղն է, որ զՈւռնայր արքայ Աղուանից ի բուռն էարկ, եւ սպանանել ոչ կամեցաւ, այլ արձակեաց զթշնամին:

 35:7 Was it not that very Mushegh who got hold of the king of Aghuania, Urhnayr, and did not want to kill him, but instead released the enemy:

35:8 Ո՞չ այդ այն Մուշեղն է, զի զարքայն Պապ հրամանաւ դորա եւ դորին խորհրդովդ զօրավարքն Յունաց սպանին. զի դա ոխացոյց եւ գրգռեաց զարքայն Յունաց ի վերայ թագաւորին Պապայ, մինչեւ ետ սպանանել:

 35:8 Was it not by Mushegh’s order and acting on his advice that the Byzantine generals killed king Pap? For Mushegh aggrevated the Byzantine emperor and caused him to have a grudge against king Pap until he had him killed:

35:9 Այլ արժան է մեռանել ի ձեռաց քոց, եւ չէ պարտ կեալ դմա. այլ թէ ոչ աճապարեսցես, արքայ, այժմ զհայ երկիրս խորհի լնուլ քաղաքօք, եւ զօրանիստ առնէ բնակութեան զօրացն Յունաց:

 35:9 It is fitting for him to die at your hands; he should not live. King, if you do not make haste, he is planning to fill up the country of Armenia with cities and make it a military base inhabited by Byzantine troops:

35:10 Եւ այնուհետեւ կամ թագաւորն Յունաց հանէ ի քէն զթագաւորութիւնս Հայոց, կամ այս Մուշեղ սպանանէ, եւ ինքն թագաւորէ:

 35:10 After that, either the Byzantine emperor will remove the kingship of Armenia from you, or Mushegh will kill you and rule himself:

35:11 Եւ այսպիսի բանիւք գաղտնի հանապազ զթագաւորն գրգռէին, մինչեւ հաւանեցաւ ըստ կամաց նոցա զսպարապետն զզօրավարն Հայոց սպանանել:

 35:11 People were constantly provoking the king with such words secretly, until Varazdat agreed with their wishes, to kill the sparapet general of Armenia:

35:12 Ապա խորհուրդ արարին, թէ ո՛րպէս ըմբռնել կարասցեն զնա. քանզի մեծապէս երկնչէին ի նմանէն:

 35:12 So they plotted how they could seize Mushegh, for they were greatly afraid of him:

35:13 Թէ զգայ, ասեն, մեծ պատերազմ առնէ. եւ ոչ ոք կարէ զդէմ քաջութեան նորա ունել, բայց հնարիւք մեքենաւորութեամբ ինչ լինիցի հնար:

 35:13 They note: “If he should realize what is happening, he will conduct a great war. No one can withstand his bravery; the only possible solution is through artifice:

35:14 Այսպէս սպասէին նմա:

 35:14 Thus, they were waiting for him:

35:15 Եւ եղեւ յաւուր միոջ հրաման ետ Վարազդատ արքայ Հայոց ընթրիս մեծ գործել եւ մեծ պատրաստութիւն առնել. եւ կոչել հրամայեաց յընթրիսն զամենայն աւագս պատուականս եւ զմեծամեծս, եւ զզօրավարն Մուշեղ:

 35:15 One day king Varazdat of Armenia commanded that a great dinner be readied, and they made great preparations. Varazdat ordered that all the senior honorable men, the grandees, and general Mushegh be called to the dinner:

35:16 Պատրաստեաց Վարազդատ արս ընտիրս հզօրս, զօրեղք, զի կազմ կայցեն գործոյն, հարկանել յանկարծօրէն յանպարտրաստից յեղակարծումն ժամու ի վերայ Մուշեղի:

 35:16 Varazdat prepared select, powerful, mighty men capable of the job of falling upon Mushegh at an unsuspected moment:

35:17 Զնոսա քաջ ուրախ առնէր մեծապէս, եւ շատ գինի տայր ըմպել, եւ բազում առնէր զբօսումն ուրախութեան:

 35:17 Varazdat made the invitees very merry, gave them a lot of wine to drink and made much happy diversion:

35:18 Արքայն Վարազդատ տայր նշանս յառաջագոյն այնոցիկ, զոր էր սպանօղն պատրաստել, եթէ յորժամ գիտիցես` թէ քաջ արբեալ իցէ, եւ զմտօք զառանցեալ յարբեցութենէ սպարապետն Մուշեղ, ես յարուցեալ իբրեւ ի ճեմիշն երթալոյ պատճառաւ, եւ դուք պատեսջիք զնովաւ:

 35:18 Prior to this king Varazdat had given this signal to the one prepared to do the killing: “When you know that sparapet Mushegh is out of his mind with drink, I will arise on the pretext of relieving myself and you surround him:

35:19 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ անցին զառանցին ի գինւոյն` ըստ չափ անցանելով, եւ թագաւորն Վարազդատ պահէր զանձն ի գինւոյն:

 35:19 They passed to the drinking and had passed the limit, but king Varazdat kept himself away from the wine:

35:20 Իբրեւ գիտաց Վարազդատ` թէ արդ յարբեցութենէ մտաց ինչ չզգաց, ինքն յարուցեալ իբրեւ յապարահէ զանց առնելոյ պատճառաւ, եւ աւագանին ամենայն բազմականացն յոտն կացին առ հասարակ, իբրեւ նմա պատիւ ինչ առնել:

 35:20 When Varazdat believed that Mushegh was incapacitated from drunkeness, he got up on the pretext of going to the privy, and all the nobility stood up as if to honor him:

35:21 Եւ յանկարծ արքն, որոց էր տուեալ հրաման, երկոտասան այր կից զոյգ զկնի կողմանէ զնմանէ բուռն հարկանէին, վեց այր ի մի բազուկն Մուշեղի, եւ վեց այր ի միւս բազուկն:

 35:21 Then suddenly, the twelve men to whom the order had been given, seized Mushegh, six on one side of him, and six on the other:

35:22 Եւ ընդ ոտն կալ թագաւորին, նայեցեալ ընդ նա` եթէ` Այս ընդէ՞ր է. եւ թագաւորին պատասխանի տուեալ, ասէ. Երթ առ Պապ արքայ, հարց եւ տես` թէ ընդէ՞ր է այդ:

 35:22 When the king got up, Mushegh looked at him inquiringly and note: “What is this”? The king replied, saying: “Go to king Pap and ask him what it is:

35:23 Եւ թագաւորն ի դուրս կոյս գնացեալ ելանէր, եւ ասէ Մուշեղ. Ի վերայ բազում իմոց վաստակոցն արեան եւ քրտան, եւ սլաքօքն զքիրտն ջնջելոյ, ա՞յս հատուցումն եղեւ ինձ:

 35:23 The king went outside and Mushegh note: “Is this my reward for my many labors of blood and sweat, and for the sweat that I wiped away with the blade:

35:24 Բայց իբրեւ եհաս ինձ մահս, թէ ի վերայ ձիոյ դիպեալ էր:

 35:24 Death should have come to me while I was mounted on a horse:

35:25 Զայս միայն բանս ժամանեաց ասել, եւ այլ ոչ ինչ ոչ:

 35:25 He had time to say this much and no more:

35:26 Եւ անդէն Բատ Սահառունի, դայեակն արքային Վարազդատայ, զնրանն` զոր յիւրում ազդերն ունէր` հանեալ, անցոյց ընդ փողս զօրավարին Մուշեղի. եւ անդէն ի բաց եհատ զգլուխ նորա:

 35:26 for king Varazdat’s dayeak Bat Saharhuni removed the sabre he had affixed to his thigh, and slit general Mushegh’s throat, cutting off his head:

35:27 Եւ բարձին զնա, եւ տարան զմարմին նորա ի գեւղն իւր:

 35:27 People picked up his body and took it to his village:
