6:0 Յաղագս Գրիգորիսի` որդւոյ Վրթանայ, եւ նորուն վախճանին, եւ տեղին` ուր եդաւն:

 6:0 Vrtanes’, son Grigoris, his death and place of burial:

6:1 Այլ վասն Գրիգորիսի եպիսկոպոսի, որդւոյ Վրթանայ, եղբօրն Յուսկան, որ կաթողիկոսն էր կողմանցն Վրաց եւ Աղուանից, իբրեւ եկաց սա յիւրում պաշտամանն, մինչ դեռ մանուկն եւս էր, շինեաց նորոգեաց զամենայն եկեղեցիս կողմանցն այնոցիկ, եւ ձգեցաւ ի գաւառակողմանցն Ատրպատականի, քարոզ ճշմարտութեան հաւատոցն Քրիստոսի լինէր նա, եւ առաջի իսկ ամենեցուն էր սքանչելի եւ զարմանալի. խստագոյն եւ դժուարագոյն անհամարք ծանրաբեռն վարուցն կրթութիւնք խստամբերութեանն, պահօք եւ սրբութեամբ, տքնական հսկմամբ անձանձրոյթ աղօթիցն ջերմութեան առ տէր Աստուած կանխելոյ վասն ամենայն մարդոյ:

 6:1 As regards bishop Grigoris Vrtanes’ son and Yusik’s brother, he became the kat’olikos of the Iberian and Aghuanian areas, occupying this office while he too was still a lad. He built and rennovated all the churches of those parts, extending to the districts of the Atrpatakan area. He preached the truth of faith in Christ and appeared miraculous and amazing before everyone with his severe, unbearable ascetical conduct, keeping fasts, with his clean life, sleepless vigils and ceaseless fervent prayers to the Lord God, for all people:

6:2 Զաւետարանական ընթացսն եւ զվերակացութիւն եկեղեցւոյ սրբոյ շնորհօքն Աստուծոյ առանց պակասութեան տանէր. առաւել եւս փութայր, գուն եդեալ յորդորելով զամենեսեան առ ի բարեացն քաջալերութիւն, զցայգ եւ զցերեկ պահօք եւ աղօթիւք եւ ուժգին խնդրուածովք եւ բարձրակալ կատարման հաւատովքն` մերձաւորաց եւ հեռաւորաց զհոգեւոր եռանդն ածէր. իբրեւ զպատերազմասէր նահատակ միշտ զանձն ի կրթութիւն եւ ի պատրաստութեան ունէր ամենայն փորձութեանց եւ վշտաց, առ ի տալ պատասխանի ամենայն համարձակութեամբ, վասն ճշմարտութեան հաւատոցն մարտնչել որ վասն Քրիստոսի:

 6:2 With the grace of God he perfectly conducted the Apostolic course and superindencency of the blessed Church, taking care, encouraging and exhorting everyone to goodness, with day and evening fasts and prayers, inspiring everyone near and far with spiritual zeal, supplications and perfect faith. Like a heroic warrior he trained and kept himself ready for all sorts of trials and sorrows, so that he be able to emerge from every battle boldly triumphant for the true faith of Christ:

6:3 Եւ իբրեւ ուղղեաց նորոգեաց զամենայն եկեղեցիս կողմանցն այնոցիկ, եհաս նա մինչեւ ի ճամբար բանակին արշակունւոյ արքային Մազքթաց, որոյ անուն իւր Սանէսան կոչէր:

 6:3 When Grigoris had reformed and rennovated all the churches in those parts, he reached the camp of the Arsacid king of the Mazkutk named Sanesan:

6:4 Քանզի եւ նոցա եւ Հայոց թագաւորացն մի ազգաւորութիւն էր տոհմին բնութեան:

 6:4 The Armenian kings and the Mazkutk kings were relatives, of the same tohm:

6:5 Եւ երթեալ յանդիման լինէր թագաւորին Մազքթաց, իշխանին բազմութեան զօրացն Հոնաց. եւ եկաց առաջի նոցա, սկսաւ քարոզել եւ աւետարանել նոցա զՔրիստոս:

 6:5 Grigoris went and presented himself to the king of the Mazkutk, the prince of a multitude of Honk’ troops. In their presence he began preaching Christ’s Gospel to them:

6:6 Ասէ ցնոսա` թէ ծաներո՛ւք զԱստուած:

 6:6 Saying: “Recognize God:

6:7 Լուան եւ ընկալան զառաջինն եւ հնազանդեցան:

 6:7 At first, they listened and accepted this:

6:8 Ապա սկսան քննել զօրէնսն Քրիստոսի, եւ ուսան ի նմանէ` թէ ատելի է Աստուծոյ աւարառութիւն եւ յափշտակութիւն, սպանութիւն, ագահութիւն, այլազրկութիւն, զայլոցկերութիւն, ցանկութիւն այլոց ստացուածոց:

 6:8 But subsequently they began to examine the faith of Christ and learned from Grigoris that God despised looting, ravaging, killing, greed, depriving others, eating others [zaylots kerutiwn] and coveting other people’s goods. When they learned these facts, they grew angry at his words and note:

6:9 Ապա այսպիսի իմն իրօք իբրեւ լուան, զայրացան ընդ բանս նորա եւ ասեն. Զի ոչ յափշտակեսցուք, զի ոչ աւարեսցուք, զի ոչ առցուք զայլոյ, ի՞ւ կեցցուք այսչափ անչափ զօրաց բազմութիւնք:

 6:9 If we do not ravage, do not loot, do not take the belongings of others, how will such a huge multitude of troops as we live?” Although Grigoris wanted to win their hearts with a myriad of goodly words, they in no way wanted to listen, but rather said to each other:

6:10 Եւ թէպէտ բիւրաւոր բանիւք բարեօք կամէր հաճել զսիրտս նոցա, ոչ ինչ կամէին ունկնդիր լինել, այլ ասէին ցմիմեանս. Եկեալ այսպիսի բանիւք` կամի ի քաջութենէ որսոյն կենաց մերոց խափանել զմեզ. իսկ եթէ սմա լուիցուք, եւ դարձցուք յօրէնս քրիստոնէութեան, ի՞ւ կեցցուք, զի ոչ յերիվար հեծցուք ըստ բնութեան օրինաց սովորութեանց մերոց:

 6:10 He has come with such words to deprive us of the bravery of the hunt and to destroy our lives. If we should listen to him and convert to the Christian faith, how will we live, for we will be unable to mount a horse according to the natural laws of our customs:

6:11 Այլ, ասէին, այս խորհուրդ Հայոց թագաւորին է. զսա յղել առ մեզ, զի այսու ուսմամբ խափանեսցէ զմեր արշաւանս ասպատակութեան հինի յաշխարհէն իւրմէ. այլ եկայք զսա պակասեցուսցուք ի միջոյ, եւ մեք ի Հայս արշաւեսցուք, աւարաւ զմեր աշխարհս լցցուք:

 6:11 This is the plan of the king of Armenia who has sent him to us in order to stop our pillaging expeditions from going to his land, by means of this teaching. Come, let us eliminate him, go invade Armenia, and fill up our land with booty:

6:12 Ապա շրջեցաւ թագաւորն, եւ լուաւ բանից զօրացն իւրոց. եւ կալան ձի մի ամեհի, կապեցին կախեցին զմանուկն Գրիգորիս զագւոյ ձիոյն, եւ արձակեցին ընդ ծովեզեր դաշտին հիւսիսական ծովուն մեծի, արտաքոյ իւրեանց բանակին ի դաշտին Վատնեայ:

 6:12 The king listened to the words of his troops and changed his mind. Taking a wild horse, they bound the lad Grigoris, tied him to the horse’s tail and let the horse run free across the plain which borders the great northern sea outside their camp, in the Vatneay plain:

6:13 Եւ այսպէս սպանին զառաքինի քարոզն Քրիստոսի զմանուկն Գրիգորիս:

 6:13 Thus, did they kill the virtuous preacher of Christ, the lad Grigoris:

6:14 Եւ ապա բարձին զնա որք ընդ նմա երթեալ էին ի գաւառէն Հաբանդայ, եւ բերին ի գաւառն իւրեանց ի կողմանս Աղուանից ի սահմանս Հայոց ի Հաբանդ, ի գեօղն` որ անուանեալ կոչի Ամարազ:

 6:14 Those who had accompanied Grigoris from the district of Haband, took his body and brought it to their district, Haband, on the border of Armenia, in the Aghuanian area, to the village called Amaraz:

6:15 Եւ եդին զնա առ եկեղեցեաւն, զոր շինեալ էր առաջնոյն մեծին Գրիգորի, հաւուն Գրիգորիսի` քահանայապետին մեծի աշխարհին Հայաստան երկրին:

 6:15 They placed him by the church which had been built by Grigoris’ grandfather, the first Gregory, the great chief-priest of the country of Armenia:

6:16 Եւ ամ յամէ աշխարհաժողովուրդք ի մի վայր ժողովեալ կողմանցն այնոցիկ եւ աշխարհաց գաւառացն այնոցիկ, զսորա զօր տօնին զյիշատակ քաջութեանն ցնծան:

 6:16 Every year the people of the districts of those lands assembled there and commemorated with joy the feast in honor of his bravery:
