50:0 Յաղագս առման եւ հարուածոցն ամրոցին Երնջակայ, եւ քաջութեան եւ արիութեան Աշոտոյ որդւոյ Սմբատայ, եւ թագաւորել նորին:	50:0 The Assault on the Fortress of Ernjak and Its Conquest: the Valor of Ashot, the son of Smbat, and His Reign:
50:1 Բայց ոստիկանն անօրէն արձանացեալ եւ մարտ զամրոցաւն զԵրնջակաւ եդեալ՝ ոչ հեռանայր անտի մինչեւ գաղտաբար յինքն գրաւեալ յափշտակէր զամրոցն: Դուռն կորստեան կենաց բնակելոցն ի նմա բանայր եւ զբազումս ի նոցանէ բազմախողխող երկաթոյն տայր կերակուր. եւ զայլս ոմանս ըստ չարատանջ իմաստիցն իւրեանց Սոդոմականացի գերութիւն վարէին:	50:1 The impious ostikan remained where he was, and putting the fortress of Ernjak under siege, did not move away from there, until he had stealthily seized the fortress. He opened the gate of destruction before the inhabitants of the stronghold, and put many of them to the sword which slaughters multitudes. The rest were taken captive for their (Ishmaelites’) wicked and sodomitical intentions:
50:2 Իսկ զհռչակաւորսն եւ զերանելիսն ի կանայս զբարեպաշտօնսն եւ զգերիմաստ մայրն Սմբատայ իշխանին Սիւնեաց, եւ զբարեպաշտուհի կին նորուն հանդերձ ստնդեաց իւրովն որդեկաւ, եւ զկին եղբօր նորուն Սահակայ՝ Սիւնեաց տեառն, գերեալ յամրոցէ անտի՝ վտարանդեալ պահէ ի Դվին քաղաքի բազում նեղութեամբ եւ տառապանօք, որպէսզի ոչ ոք ի նոցանէն երեւեալ լինէր՝ թէ ո՛ր տիկինն իցէ եւ ո՛ր նաժիշտն:	50:2 Yusuf also took captive the renowned, religious, and wise mother of prince Smbat of Siwnik’, who was blessed among women, as well as his pious wife together with her suckling babe, and the wife of his brother Sahak, the lord of Siwnik’. He transferred the latter from the fortress and kept them in confinement at Dvin, in great distress and agony, so much so, that the mistress among them could not be discerned from the maid:
50:3 Եւ որ նախ քան զայս գրգեալք եւ գգուեալք էին ի գահաւորակս իւրեանց՝ այժմ մատամբք իւրեանց վաստակէին եւ զպէտս ոգէպահին այնուիկ վճարէին. Վասն զի առան գանձք նոցա եւ աւար հարան զարդք եւ կազմածք տանց նոցա:	50:3 Those, who were caressed and fondled at one time in litters, now earned their living by means of their fingers, and thereby paid for the necessities of their daily subsistence, for their treasures were taken away from them, and their ornaments as well as household were ravaged:
50:4 Եւ այսպէս կոծ եւ աղաղակ եւ կականումն եւ ճիչ բազում յարքունական ապարանս նոցա լսելի լինէր:	50:4 Thus, in the royal palaces one could hear much wailing, crying and weeping:
50:5 Իսկ իբրեւ գոյժ աղմկի աղէտին հասելոյ լսելի լինէր յականջս բարեացապարտ իշխանին Սմբատայ եւ եղբօր նորուն Սահակայ՝ միումն ի կողմանս Վասպուրականի եւ միւսումն ի կողմանս Գուգարաց, թէպէտ եւ արիաբար զմի զինուորութիւն զինուորէին ի վերայ թշնամեացն դիմել եւ գրաւաթափ գերելոց ընտանեացն լինել. սակայն ոչ կարացեալ վաղվաղակի գումարտակս զօրաց կազմել եւ ոչ ի հեռաստանէ աճապարել յամբոկ գործոյն մինչեւ ի մետաղս բանտից արկեալ պնդակազմ զպահպանութիւնն պատրաստէին:	50:5 But when the ill tidings of the calamity that had happened reached the ears of the beneficient prince Smbat, and his brother Sahak, while the former was in the region of Vaspurakan, and the latter in Gugark’, both of them unanimously raised arms with valor in order to fall upon the enemy and liberate their families from captivity. Nevertheless, being unable to marshall their forces immediately, and to come in time from afar in order to carry out their purpose before the confinement (of their families) in prison, they made preparations for a strong defense:
50:6 Անդ ապա տիկինն մեծ՝ մայրն Սմբատայ, եւ որդեակ նորուն իսկ իշխան վախճանեալք թաղեցան ի միասին առ դուրս մայրաքաղաքի եկեղեցւոյն Դվնայ:	50:6 It was then, that the great princess, the mother of Smbat, and his son, the prince, died there, and were buried together near the gates of the cathedral of the capital city of Dvin:
50:7 Իսկ զկանայս երկոցունց նոցա՝ բարձեալ տարան ի Պարս Ատրպատականի ի դիպահոջ ամուրս իւրեանց կացուցեալ:	50:7 But the wives of the two princes were taken to Atrpatakan in Persia, where they were confined in prison:
50:8 Իսկ բազմահանդէսն այն եւ աջողակն ի հրահանգս կրթութեան վարժից մարտի Աշոտ՝ որդի արքային Սմբատայ, բազում ընթացութիւնս եւ նահատակութիւնս քաջութեանց ուժեղակ մրցութեամբ ցուցանէր ի ժամանակի հալածանացն, եւ անցանէր զանցանէր զամենեքումբք արիաբար հանդիսիւ, որք կենօք եւ աւուրք զուգահաւասար նմա էին:	50:8 On the other hand, king Smbat’s son Ashot, who was well renowned and skilled in the art of warfare, displayed during the persecutions much valor accompanied by excessive vigor, and excelled over all his peers in bravery:
50:9 Սա նախ քան զկատարումն վկայօրէն վախճանի հօր իւրոյ՝ գրեթէ իբրեւ զարծուի սաւառնաթեւ սլացեալ ընդ օդս, այնպէս սրավարեալ խոյանայր զկնի գիշատեալ այլազգեացն, որք ասպատակ սփռեալ տարածեալ էին ընդ երեսս երկրի մերում. եւ նախ քան զամենայն ինչ ի փոքր մի վայրկեան ժամանակի յինքն առ հասարակ գրաւեալ նուաճէր զբոլոր իսկ ամրոցս տէրութեան հօր իւրոյ, զոր առեալ կալեալ էր ոստիկանին:	50:9 Before his father suffered the death of a martyr, Ashot, like an eagle soaring through the sky, dashed forward swiftly after the ravenous foreigners who sent their raiding forces throughout our land. At first, in a short period, he reconquered and took possession of all the fortresses that were in his father’s domain, and had been taken by the ostikan:
50:10 Եւ զորս միանգամ պահնակս անդ ի Սառակինոսացն գտանէր՝ ի սուր սուսերի մաշէր. եւ պատուարօք եւ պահնակօք եւ բազում ռոճկօք զամուրսն ամրացուցեալ՝ եւ ինքն զհետ թշնամեաց կրթէր ուր եւ ասպատակք իսկ հինից Իսմայէլականացն գտանէին: Եւ ամենայնիւ յամենայնի աներկիւղաբար սրտի գրեթէ զԵղիական պատերազմն յարդարէր ընդդէմ հակառակամարտիցն հանդերձ հարազատ եղբարբն իւրով Աբասաւ:	50:10 He immediately put to the sword the guards (that had been left) by the Saracens, and having fortified the strongholds with guards, bulwarks and large amount of provisions, he went in pursuit of the enemy, wherever there were raiding Ishmaelites. In every respect, through the fortitude of his heart, he almost recreated the Trojan War in his endeavors together with his legitimate brother Abas against his opponents:
50:11 Եւ ապա կառավար կալեալ զմիտս իւր՝ առ Աստուած հայէր. եւ հասեալ ի վերայ Իսմայէլեան զօրուն, որ նստէրն իսկ ի Բագրաւանդ գաւառի՝ սրոյ ճարակ զամենեսեան զնոսին տայր:	50:11 Then, guided by reason, he put his trust in God, and falling upon the Ishmaelite army, which was encamped in the district of Bagrewand, he put all of them to the sword:
50:12 Եւ զգլխաւոր երէցս նոցա ձերբակալ արարեալ՝ հրամայէր տիկ ձեւացուցանել եւ կախել զպարսպաց ամրոցացն առ ի տեսիլ եւ յահարկութիւն բազմաց:	50:12 Having seized their chief priests, he gave orders to turn them into casks and suspend them from the bastions of the fortress in order to inspire fear to the onlookers:
50:13 Եւ ինքն ապա չուեալ գնացեալ ի Շիրակ գաւառ, եւ ի վերայ հասեալ զօրուն, որ ի նմա որջացեալ զետեղեալ կային՝ եւ զայն եւս առ հասարակ ընդ սուր հանեալ եւ զմնացեալսն վարատեալ վատնէր:	50:13 Then, he set out for the district of Shirak and falling upon the (enemy) forces that were stationed there, slew them also by sword, and caused those that had survived to flee:
50:14 Եւ անտի դարձեալ իբր զօդապարիկ իմն երթեալ չուէ զկողմամբք Գուգարաց՝ եւ զայնս եւս ամրոցս իւրոյ տէրութեանն առ հասարակ յինքն գրաւէր նուաճէր:	50:14 Upon his return, he marched to the region of Gugark’ with great speed, and also took possession of all those strongholds in his domain:
50:15 Եւ ապա անտի յեղակարծումն իբրեւ զորոգայթ իմն ի վերայ հասանէր զօրուն Հագարացւոց, որ ի մայրաքաղաքին Վրաց կային ի Տփխիս. եւ անդ զոմանս սրոյ ճարակ տայր եւ զայլս ի պատուականաց ձերբակալս արարեալ՝ երկաթի կապանօք ի մետաղս բանտից պահէր. զի ընդ այնոսիկ քրիստոնէից փոխանակեսցէ՝ գրաւաթափ առնելով, որք ըմբռնեալ իսկ էին ի ձեռն չար ոստիկանին:	50:15 Then unexpectedly—as if in an ambush—he came upon the army of the Hagarites in Tiflis, the capital city of Iberia. Here, he slew some by the sword, but seized those that were men of distinction, and putting them in iron fetters, confined them in prison, so that he might be able to liberate from captivity those Christians who had been seized by the wicked ostikan, by exchanging the former with the latter:
50:16 Եւ ապա անտի առեալ զաւար եւ զկապուտ բազում՝ դառնայ ի գաւառն Տաշրաց. եւ լուեալ եթէ զօր Իսմայէլեան ղօղեալն ստեալ դադարեալ կայ յամուրս խորաձորս Աղաստեւոյ, եւ ապա այնուհետեւ անձնընտիր զզօրս իւր արարեալ իբրեւ արս երկերիւր՝ եւ երթեալ գռոյթ իմն ի վերայ զօրու Հագարացւոյն տուեալ անհնարին մարտ քաջութեան՝ առ հասարակ զնոսա սրոյ ճարակ տայր. Եւ առեալ զկապուտ կողոպուտն դառնայր ի բանակն իւր:	50:16 Having taken much booty and loot, he returned (from there) to the district of Tashirk’, and learning that the Ishmaelite army had taken refuge in the strongholds of the glens of Aghstew, he chose approximately two hundred select men, and attacked the Ishmaelite forces against whom he fought with great bravery, and putting all of them to the sword, took the loot and returned to his army:
50:17 Եւ իսկ եւ իսկ չուեալ երթեալ առ յաւէտ սիրելի իշխանն իւր Գուրգէն եւ անդ ի միասին զհասարակացն հոգս խորհրդաբար տեսեալ՝ ապա երթեալ գնայր զկողմամբք ամրոցացն Արշարունեաց:	50:17 Immediately after this, he went to visit prince Gurgen, who was his very dear friend. They took counsel together concerning their mutual problems, and then he went to the strongholds of Arsharunik’:
50:18 Եւ յայնմ հետէ ոչ եւս յաւելին ելանել ապականիչքն յաշխարհ տէրութեան նորա:	50:18 Thereafter the defilers never raided his domain:
50:19 Զայն տեսեալ թագաւորին Վրաց՝ այլ եւ զօրացն իւրոց, եթէ այց արար նմա Տէր եւ պատսպարեաց նմա եւ յաջողեաց ի բարութիւնս, ապա այնուհետեւ հարթ հաւասարութեամբ ի մի կամս եւ ի միտս զինքեանս բերեալ եւ թագ նմա կապեալ՝ թագաւորեցուցանէին զնա փոխանակ հօր իւրոյ, յինքնակալութեան իմն պայմանի պատուոյ զնա համարեալ, եւ Աստուծոյ ամենակալի զապագայսն յանձնարարեալ:	50:19 When the king of Iberia and his armies realized that the Lord had come to the aid of Ashot, protecting him and making him prosperous, they came to an agreement with him, and being of one mind with him, made Ashot king in place of his father. For they considered him to be in the position of honor of a monarch and entrusted the future to God Almighty:
