16:0 Եւ ապա ժողովեալ աւագ սեպուհեացն եւ բովանդակ բազմութեան ուխտին եկեղեցւոյ եւ ժողովրդոց ի միասին արանց եւ կանանց` ողբային զսուրբ եւ զանարատ եւ զառաքելաշնորհ վարդապետութիւնն, զոր սերմանեալ աճեցոյց ի նոսա սուրբն Գրիգորիոս եւ նորին զաւակքն, որք ուսուցին զճշմարիտ եւ զարդար ուսումն ամենայն լսողաց. զոր ինքեանք, նման երանելի առաքելոցն, ընկալան ոչ ի մարդկանէ եւ ոչ ի ձեռն մարդոյ, այլ յազդեցութենէ սուրբ Հոգւոյն շնորհաց:

 16:0 Then the senior sepuhs and the entire multitude of the covenant of the Church and the people, men and women, assembled and lamented (the loss of] the blessed, pure, and virtuous doctrine which saint Gregory and his sons had fostered and caused to grow within them, who had preached the correct and true teaching to all listeners. They themselves, like the blessed Apostles, had received this teaching not from humankind, not from mortal hands, but through the grace of the Holy Spirit:

16:1 Եւ դարձեալ ժողովեցան միահամուռ, եւ դիմեալք բուռն հարկանէին զոտից սրբոյ առն Աստուծոյ Սահակայ, աղերս թախանձանաց եւ բազմազեղ արտասուս արկեալ առաջի ճշմարիտ քահանայապետին եւ ասեն. «Մեղաք յերկինս եւ առաջի քո. թո՛ղ մեզ մեղուցելոցս եւ ձեւացո՛ զքեզ ըստ աւրինակի նախնւոյն քո բարեպաշտի սրբոյն Գրիգորի, որ ոչ յիշեաց զայնչափ տանջանս եւ զքերանս, զոր անցուցին ընդ նա նախնիքն մեր:

 16:1 Once again, united, they assembled and clasped the feet of the blessed man of God, Sahak. With mournful entreaties and copious tears they threw themselves before the true patriarch, and note: “We have sinned before Heaven and before you. Pardon us sinners, and imitate your ancestor the pious Gregory who overlooked the severe torments and batterings he was subjected to by our ancestors:

16:2 այլ նմանեալ Արարչին ամենեցուն` հատոյց փոխարէնս բարի փոխանակ չարեացն, զոր հասուցին ի վերայ նորա, եւ ծանուցեալ եցոյց ամենայն բանիւ հաւանելոց նմա` վարս երկնաթռիչս եւ ճանապարհս աստուածագիւտս. եւ ուսոյց ամենեցունց ասել հանապազ. «Թո՛ղ մեզ զպարտիս մեր, ըստ մեր թողլոյ մերոց պարտապանաց:

 16:2 Rather try to resemble the Creator of us all, who repaid the evils visited upon him with good and showed in every way to those who believed in Him, heaven-bound conduct and the path to recognition of God. And He taught everyone to constantly say: ’Forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. ’:

16:3 Արդ` որ եղեր դու անդադար վարդապետ մեր` զնորին փառաւորութիւն տպաւորեա՛ եւ դու ի քոյին անձնդ, զնոյն համբերութեան աւրինակ, եւ թո՛ղ մեզ զպարտիս մեր:

 16:3 Now you, who were our constant vardapet, imprint His glory within your own person, follow the same example of patience, and forgive our trespasses:

16:4 Եւ մեք ջանամք եւ խնդրեմք ի դրանէ` հաստատել զքեզ ի բնիկ հայրենի աթոռ կաթողիկոսութեան սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ, յորմէ լուսաւորեալ` տեսաք զայն անմատոյց արդարութեան արեգակն:

 16:4 And we shall endeavor and request that the court reestablish you on your native patrimonial throne of the kat’oghikosate of the Holy Church through which we were illuminated and saw that unattainable sun of justice:

16:5 Եւ մի՛ խառնեսցի պղտոր ուսումն ընդ յստակ եւ ականակիտ վարդապետութիւն սրբոյ եւ առաքելանման հայրապետին Գրիգորի. քանզի ահա դեռ թուլացեալ մեղկի ի լոյծ առաջնորդաց կնիք աւանդոց անարատ քարոզութեան սրբոյն, եւ ահա կորնչիմք մեք եւ ծնեալք ի մէնջ զյաւիտենական կորուստ:

 16:5 Let the clear and limpid doctrine of the holy patriarch Gregory (who was like an Apostle) not be mixed with the erroneous teaching (of the Syrians]. For weak and dissolute leaders have weakened the seal of traditions of the saint’s unadulterated preaching, and lo! we and our offspring will suffer an eternal loss:

16:6 Սոյնպէս եւ առաւել եւս քան զսոյն բանս աղաչանաց խաւսեալ միաբանութեամբ ամենայն բազմութեանն ի բազում աւուրս ընդ սրբոյն ի տուէ եւ ի գիշերի անդադար` ամենեւին ոչ կարէին խոնարհեցուցանել զմիտս առնն ճշմարտի ի բանս խանդաղատականս պաղատանաց իւրեանց: Այլ խաղաղական պատասխանատուութեամբ ասէր ցամենեսեան, թէ:

 16:6 Although the entire multitude in unison spoke these and many other words of entreaty for many days, morning and night without cease, to the blessed (Sahak] they were entirely unable to change the mind of that upright man (to accept] their emotional requests. Rather (Sahak] tranquilly replied to all of them:

16:7 Ես ոչ ուսայ յերկնաւոր Արարչէն եւ ի վարդապետէն Քրիստոսէ բարկանալ ումեք, որ եւ ի խաչին յաղագս խաչահանուացն աղաչէր զՀայր` չհամարել նոցա զմեղսն. Հա՛յր, թո՛ղ դոցա, զի ոչ գիտեն զի՛նչ գործեն. Տէ՛ր, մի՛ համարիր դոցա զայս մեղս. որ եւ մեզ ցանկ բողոքէ ասելով. Աւրհնեցէ՛ք զհալածիչս ձեր, բարի արարէք ատելեաց ձերոց:

 16:7 I did not learn from the heavenly Creator and from Christ’s vardapet to get angry at anyone. For (Christ] on the Cross beseeched his Father not to regard their actions as sins. And He always protested to us, saying: “Bless your persecutors, and be good to those who hate you. ’:

16:8 Այլ քահանայանալ ի վերայ տիրանենգ եւ տիրասպան եւ մատնիչ ժողովրդոց ոչ կարեմ. քանզի սուրբ Հոգին, որ ծնաւ զմեզ վերստին սուրբ աւազանաւն, ժառանգակից լինել Քրիստոսի` նոյն ասաց երկնաքաղաքացի արամբն Պաւղոսիւ, թէ Մի՛ դատիք, զի մի՛ դատապարտեսջիք. եւ եթէ, Դուք որ կարողդ էք` զտկարութիւն տկարացն բարձէք. եւ դարձեալ ասէ, թէ Իմ են վրէժխնդրութիւնք, եւ ես հատուցից, ասէ Տէր:

 16:8 But I am unable to rule as patriarch over a people which plots against, betrays, and kills its lord. For the Holy Spirit which gave us a second birth in the holy baptismal font allowing us to be co-inheritors of Christ, also said through that sublime man Paul ’Judge not, lest you be judged, ’ and ’Those of you who are able, eliminate the failings of the weak, ’ and ’Vengeance is mine and I shall exact it, said the Lord. ’ You should know yourselves:

16:9 Արդ` դուք ձեզէն գիտէք. եղէք վրէժխնդիր թագաւորին ձերոյ գործոց, եւ զայրացեալք նմա` զսուրբ հաւատ ուխտին մերոյ մատնեալ` ծաղր ետուք առնել անաւրինացն:

 16:9 You sought vengeance on your king for his deeds, and, being furious at him, you betrayed the blessed faith of our covenant and permitted the infidels to ridicule it:

16:10 Ի՞ւ զիս արդեաւք ջանայցէք մխիթարել, եւ կամ ո՞ւմ թախանձեցուցանէք զիս քահանայանալ, որ զվիրաւոր ոչխար հաւտին Քրիստոսի տեսանեմ ոչ պատեալ, եւ ձիթով եւ գինւով աւծեալ զվէրսն եւ եդեալ ի վերայ գրաստու եւ տարեալ ի պանդոկի. այլ յաւշեալ յանխնայ եւ առաջի գիշակեր գազանաց ընկեցեալ յաւցտումն:

 16:10 By what means could you try to console me, and who could entreat me to be (your] shepherd? For I see that the injured sheep of Christ’s flock, rather than being wrapped, and having its wounds dressed with oil and wine and placed upon a pack-animal and taken to a shelter; that sheep was mercilessly torn apart before wild beasts that devoured and divided it:

16:11 Երթա՛յք յինէն ի բաց, եւ թո՛յլ տուք ինձ ողբալ զընդհանուր կորուստ աշխարհիս Հայոց, զոր տեսանեմ աչաւք մտացս ի զաւրութենէ վերին ցուցակութեանն. մի՛ բռնադատէք մխիթարել զիս ի վերայ բեկման ժողովրդեան իմոյ:

 16:11 Leave me alone and allow me to lament the general ruin of the land of Armenia which I see with my mind’s eye through strength from On High. Do not try to force me to be consoled over the destruction of my people:

16:12 Վասն զի զանցս աղէտիս այսորիկ յառաջ քան զձեռնադրելն զիս յեպիսկոպոսութիւն` եցոյց ինձ վերին կանխասացութիւն, գիտելութիւն յանուրջս, ըստ աւրինակի մարգարէական տեսլեանն, որ ցուցաւ սուրբ նահատակին Գրիգորի, գիտելութիւն իրաց առ ի յապայ եղելոցս:

 16:12 For heavenly providence revealed to me in a dream, before I was ordained a bishop that this disastrous circumstance would develop. (It was] like the prophetic vision which was shown to the holy martyr Gregory, and was knowledge of things to come:

16:13 Զոր եւ ձեզ պատմել այսաւր բռնադատիմ առ նեղել սրտի իմոյ, եւ ցուցանիմ անզգամ որպէս եւ սուրբ առաքեալն Աստուծոյ Պաւղոս, որ յաղագս սուտ առաքելոցն եւ անաւրէն մշակացն` գրեաց պարծելով առ Կորնթացիսն զիւր ճգնութեանցն զհանդէսն:

 16:13 My troubled heart forces me to relate this to you today and appear as incensed as the blessed Paul who was sent by God, who, because of false apostles and impious servants wrote boasting of the feats of his asceticism to the Corinthians:

16:14 Արդ` ունկնդիր լերուք ինձ մտադիւրութեամբ ամենայն բազմութիւնք ժողովրդոց, եւ պատմեցից ձեզ:

 16:14 Now listen thoughtfully all you multitudes of people and I shall tell you:
