58:0 Յաղագս պատերազմելոյ Աշոտոյ արքայի ընդ Աշոտոյ, եւ պարտելոյ ի նմանէ:	58:0 King Ashot Makes War against (the Anti-King) Ashot and Is Defeated by Him:
58:1 Իսկ թագաւորն Աշոտ՝ - վասն որոյ այժմ բանս ճառէր վասն նորա - լուեալ զմիւս թագաւորէ հոմանուն իւր հօրեղբօր որդւոյ, եթէ ոչ եկաց մնաց ի սահմանեալ ուխտին որ ի մէջ նոցա, այլ ընդ իւրով ձեռամբ նուաճեալ կացոյց զաւանս եւ զագարակս որ շուրջ զՎաղարշապատ քաղաքաւ:	58:1 King Ashot, about whom we were speaking recently, heard that the other king, namely his namesake and the son of his paternal uncle, was not abiding by the treaty that they had agreed upon, but that he had taken possession of the awans and agaraks surrounding the city of Vagharshapat:
58:2 սակս այսորիկ հետաքրքիր լեալ ի թշնամութիւն ընդ միմեանս եւ ամբոխս մարտկաց եւ հոյլս հինից պատրաստեալ՝ մինչդեռ Աշոտ անկասկածաբար կայր նստեալ ղօղեալ ի գիւղն որ Վաղավերն անուանի - յեղակարծումն ժամու յառաւօտին պահու յանկարծօրէն ի վերայ ժամանեալ՝ ջոլիրս ջախջախս ջարդոցաց ի վերայ զօրու նորա ածէր:	58:2 For this reason, seeking to arouse enmity between themselves and getting ready a great mob composed of numerous warriors and marauders, king Ashot attacked suddenly in the unexpected hours of the morning, and brought utter destruction upon the forces of Ashot, while the latter was unsuspectingly taking cover in the village of Vaghawer:
58:3 եւ միաձի միահանդերձ զինքն եւ զհասարակ գունդն վարատեալ փախստականութեամբ՝ առ հասարակ յաւարի առնոյր զամենայն կապուտ կողոպուտ նոցա եւ զզէնս եւ զզարդս եւ զձիս եւ զջորիս բազում յոյժ: Եւ ինքն դարձեալ չուեալ ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաք առկայացեալ արձանանայր ի նմա: Իսկ միւս եւս Աշոտ չոգաւ նստաւ ի Դվին քաղաքի:	58:3 After dispersing entirely Ashot’s army and routing the latter with only the clothes he had on and his horse, the king plundered all of the possessions of the enemy, their weapons, ornaments, horses, and many mules. Then he returned to the city of Vagharshapat, where he remained. But the other Ashot came to the city of Dvin and stayed there:
58:4 Իսկ ես ապա ժամանեալ անդ ի մէջ նոցա՝ ոչ սակաւ ինչ բանս յանդիմանութեան եւ լուտացօղ ապառում խռովութիւն ի վերայ արքայորդւոյն ածէի արտօսրաթոր տոչորմամբ սակս այնպիսի մահահոտ դրժողութեանցն զոր արար:	58:4 Thereupon, I arrived (in order to intervene) between them, and with bitter tears uttered many scolding words and expressed my utter disgust at the son of king Smbat for the deadly perfidy that he committed:
58:5 Եւ թէպէտ բողոք բարձեալ ջանահնար լինէի բառնալ ի միջոյ նոցա զչար սերմանացանի որոմնն, զի մի՛ գտցի ի նոսա խմորք ցաւոց - որ թէեւ առ ժամայն տեղի տուեալ բանին հաւանական սնուցանէին կամս ի հաշտութեան սակի -սակայն ոչ կացեալ մնացեալ ի բանսն բարեզգեացս, այլ վաղվաղակի ի չար մախանս դարձեալ հակամիտէին, եւ այնպէս տակաւին ընդ միմեանս դատէին կշտամբութեամբ չարի եւ բորբոքեալ նախանձու:	58:5 Although by means of my protest I tried to uproot from their midst the evil seeds planted by the wicked tiller, so that they might rid themselves of the cause of afflictions—even though they yielded temporarily to my pleas and consented to come to terms of reconciliation, they did not abide by their noble promises. On the contrary, they immediately reverted to their wicked envy and thus argued with each other at the rebukable instigation of evil and jealousy:
58:6 Եւ ապա երկաքանչիւրք նոքա հետամուտք լեալք միմեանց եւ զմիմեամբք պարայածեալք՝ առ հասարակ դղրդեալ սասանեալ աւերեալ քանդեալ կործանեալ լինէր սեպհական տէրութիւն աշխարհին իւրեանց. եւ զմեծութիւն եւ զփառս իւրեանց ազգի օտարի տուեալ՝ ի փարթամութիւն այլոց եւ յաղքատութիւն ինքեանց տարածեցին զճանապարհս իւրեանց: Եւ այսպէս զերկեամ մի ելուզակօրէն զկնի իրերաց դռոյթս տային:	58:6 Thereafter, each one pursued the other, and they went in circles around one another. Their own domains were completely ravaged and destroyed. They handed over the dignity and glory of their own families to foreigners and enriched them, whereas they spread their way poverty for themselves. Thus, for a period of two years they fell upon one another like brigands:
58:7 Իսկ ես աւա՛ղ եղկելի անձին իմոյ կարդայի, զի բազում անգամ բնակեաց անձն իմ ընդ այնոսիկ ոյք ատէին զողջոյն, վասն զի ես էի խաղաղարար եւ յորժամ խօսէի՝ նոքա մարտնչէին ընդ իս:	58:7 As for myself, I cried ’woe unto me’, for I often was forced to live with those who hated my greetings, because I was a peace-maker, and whenever I opened my mouth, they contradicted me:
58:8 Իսկ թագաւորն արքայորդին գնացեալ առնու ի կնութիւն իւր զդուստր իշխանին մեծին Սահակայ, որ Սեւադայն յորջորջէր. եւ անդ զպարսն պարեալ եւ կաքաւսն յօրինեալ՝ առաքէ նմա ոստիկանն Յուսուփ թագ արքայական եւ զզարդս զգեստուց պատուականս եւ պայծառս եւ վայելուչս, եւ ձիս ոսկեսանձս պատուական զինուք եւ զարդուք, եւ հեծեալս յօգնականութիւն նմա գունդ Իսմայէլեան:	58:8 Be that as it may, king Ashot, the son of king Smbat, went and married the daughter of the great prince Sahak, who was called Sewaday. On this occasion, while they danced and performed the kak’aw, the ostikan Yusuf sent Ashot a royal crown and valuable ornaments for robes, both beautiful and becoming, horses with golden reins, together with valuable weapons and armor, and an Ishmaelite cavalry detachment to assist him:
58:9 Իսկ նորա պսակեալ թագիւն, որ առաքեցաւ յոստիկանէն՝ եւ բազում կարասիս եւ գանձս նա ոստիկանին առաքեալ՝ առեալ ապա եւս ընդ իւր զզօրս իշխանին Սահակայ աներոյ իւրոյ՝ գայ չուէ հասանէ ի դուռն Դվին քաղաքի, վասն զի ի նմա իսկ առկայացեալ կայր միւս թագաւորն հոմանուն նորուն. եւ գումարտակ զօրս ապա սփռեալ տարածանէին ի մարտ:	58:9 After the investiture of the crown that the ostikan had dispatched, Ashot sent much money and treasures to the ostikan. Then taking with him also the forces of his father-in-law prince Sahak, he came to the gates of the city of Dvin, for the other king, who was his namesake, was stationed there. Subsequently, they sent their forces against one another in combat, and gave battle:
58:10 Իսկ ես ի խաղաղութիւն միշտ խօսէի ընդ իւրաքանչիւրսն՝ որպէս միանգամայն եւ երկիցս եւ երիցս:	58:10 On my part, I always pleaded in favor of peace with the two sides individually, once, twice as well as three times:
58:11 Բայց արքայորդին Աշոտ ի բազմութիւն զօրացն ապաստանեալ եւ ի քաջութիւն ինքեան նա յուսացեալ՝ ամբարտաւանս եւ բարձրագոյնս փքայր. ընդ որս ոչ թերեւս հաճեալ Տեառն:	58:11 However, Ashot, the son of king Smbat, putting his hopes in the strength of his forces, and his own valiance, boasted arrogantly and haughtily, whereat the Lord was perhaps displeased:
58:12 եւ իբրեւ մարտն ընդ միմեանս բաղխեալ ըստ գրգռութեան յուզմանն Գրիգորոյ աներոյ արքայորդւոյն եւ որդւոյ իշխանին Սեւադայի՝ ի փախուստ առաջի նոցա դառնային զօրք Աշոտոյ արքայորդւոյն, եւ զբազումս ի զօրացն սրոյ ճարակ տային ըստ Իմաստնոյն բանի, թէ Տէր ամբարտաւանից հակառակ կայ:	58:12 When they met one another in battle, due to the restless fears of Grigor, the brother-in-law of the king’s son (Ashot Erkat’), and the son of prince Sewaday, the forces of Ashot, the son of king Smbat, turned to flight before the enemy and many of them were felled by the sword in accordance with the words of the sage, that “the Lord is against the haughty:
58:13 ապա գնացեալ չուեալ երթեալ արքայորդին առ մեծ իշխանն Վրաց Գուրգէն եւ զօրս բազումս ի նմանէ գումարտակեալ՝ դարձեալ գայր հասանէր ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաք: Եւ յայնմ նուագի ապա ոչ տուաւ նոցա առ ի յինէն թոյլ մարտիւ ընդ միմեանս հարկանիլ, այլ բաղխեալ իմ զգործարանս իմաստից նոցա՝ խրատու բարւոյ զունկն մատուցանէին, յօգտութիւն սիրոյ ընդ միմեանս իմաստութեամբ բերեալք:	58:13 Subsequently, the son of king Smbat went to the great prince of Iberia, Gurgen, and receiving from him a great number of soldiers, arrived at the city of Vagharshapat, but on this occasion I did not allow them to do battle with one another, and pleaded with them to use their brains. They heeded (my) sound advice, and wisely accepted the benefit of mutual friendship:
58:14 Զայսու ժամանակաւ ապա իշխանն Սիւնեաց Սահակ, որ սեպհականաբար պայազատէր զգաւառսն առ ծովեզերբն Գեղամայ՝ վախճանեալ փոխի ի կենացս, թողլով իւր ուստր մի մանկիկ տղայ փոխանորդ. եւ դնեն զնա ի քնարանի առ դուրս ձեռակերտ եկեղեցւոյն իւրոյ ի գիւղն Նորատունս:	58:14 At this time, prince Sahak, who possessed the districts along the shore of the Sea of Gegham as his inheritance, died. He was survived by a son, his heir, still under age. They buried him in the cemetery near the church that was built by him in the village of Noratunk’:
