3:0 Յերկրորդ ամի Կոստանդնու կայսեր Հոռոմոց, որ էր թոռն Հերակղի՝ ազդ եղեւ առ իշխանն Թէոդորոս, եթէ հէն զարթուցեալ գայ ի վերայ աշխարհիս:

 3:0 In the second year of the Byzantine emperor Constantine, who was Heraclius’ grandson, news reached Prince T’e’odoros that the marauders had arisen and were coming against the land:

3:1 Իսկ նորա առեալ զզօրս իւր՝ կամէր ունել զկիրճս ճանապարհին Ձորայոյ, այլ ոչ կարաց ժամանել յառաջս նոցա. քանզի ըստ օդաթեւն արագութեան յարձակեալք իբրեւ օձք թեւաւորք յառաջեցին թշնամիքն, եւ զկնի իւրեանց թողեալ զզօրսն Հայոց՝ դէմ եդեալ ընթացան ի մայրաքաղաքն Դուին:

 3:1 He took his troops and wanted to get hold of gorges at the Dzora pass, but was unable to get there in advance of the Arab army because the enemy had attacked with the speed of winged snakes. Thus they left Armenian forces behind them and headed to the capital city of Dwin:

3:2 Եւ վասն զի թափուր գտին զքաղաքն յարանց պատերազմողաց, զի ամենեքեան զհետ Թէոդորոսի իշխանին գնացեալ էին, բայց միայն զկանայս եւ զմանկտիս եւ զայլ խառնիճաղանճս, որք ոչ էին արք պատերազմի՝ հասին ի վերայ քաղաքին եւ վաղվաղակի առին զամրոցն, եւ զգտեալ արսն ի նմա կոտորեցին, եւ զկանայս եւ զմանկտիս վարեցին ի գերութիւն՝ [ԼԵՌ] ոգիս:

 3:2 They found the city devoid of fighting men, because all of them had gone along with Prince T’e’odoros. All they encountered there were women, children, and other people who were not soldiers. They came against the city and quickly took the fortress. They killed the men they discovered and took into captivity the women and children, some [35,000] souls:

3:3 Արդ ո՛վ արդեօք արժանաւորապէս ողբասցէ զթշուառութիւն աղետիցն. քանզի ամենայն ուստեք անհնարին էր վտանգն:

 3:3 Tell me, who is capable of lamenting in a worthy fashion the wretchedness of these disasters:

3:4 Զի սուրբ եկեղեցիք, յորս ոչ էր արժան հեթանոսաց մտանել՝ քանդեալ եւ քայքայեալ կոխան պիղծ ոտիցն անօրինաց լինէին, եւ քահանայք հանդերձ սարկաւագօք եւ պաշտօնէիւք խողխողեալ սրով ժպիրհ եւ անողորմ թշնամեացն. եւ բազում տիկնայք փափկասունք, որոց ոչ էր առեալ զփորձ նեղութեան՝ գանալից քքօք թշնամանեալք եւ քարշեալք ի հրապարակս՝ զկականումն ողբոցն բարձրացուցանէին վասն յեղակարծումն օրհասին:

 3:4 For they occurred everywhere. The holy churches, which the pagans were not worthy to enter, were pulled apart, demolished, and trampled under the loathsome feet of the infidels. Priests, deacons, and worshippers were slaughtered by the insolent and merciless enemy. Delicate women, who had never experienced adversity, were whipped and dragged into the square crying out laments for the fate that awaited them:

3:5 Այլ եւ աշխարհախումբ բազմութեանն ըմբռնեալք ուստերօք եւ դստերօք ի նոյն վտանգս՝ յաճախէին զհառաչանս եւ զհեծութիւնս. զի ոչ գիտէին՝ զո՛ր առաւել ողբասցեն, զխողխողեա՞լսն յանօրէն սրբոյն, եթէ զկենդանւոյն անջատեալսն զուստերս եւ զդստերս, օտարացուցանել ի հաւատոյն որ ի Քրիստոս եւ ի հոգեւոր յաստուածային փառատրութեանցն:

 3:5 Similarly, the multitude of captives with their sons and daughters were in the same calamity, groaning and sighing. They did not know who was more worthy of lamentation, those who had been slain by the infidel’s sword, or the sons and daughters left alive who were to be seized and taken, to be alienated from the faith of Christ and its spiritual and divine glorification:

3:6 Եւ զոմանս ողորմելի տեսլեամբ անկեալ դիակունս ի վերայ դիականց ընդ արիւն թաթաւեալք թէպէտ եւ ողբովք աշխարէին՝ այլ ոչ էին ձեռնհաս ամփոփել զմարմինսն եւ տալ գերեզմանի:

 3:6 Though there were many weeping and mourning the pitiful sight of blood-spattered bodies fallen on top of one another, the survivors were not in a condition to gather up the bodies and bury them:

3:7 Եւ ի դէպ էր զմարգարէականն առնուլ ողբս, որ ասէ «Աստուած, մտին հեթանոսք ի ժառանգութիւն քո, պղծեցին զտաճար սուրբ քո, եւ արկին զդիակունս ծառայից քոց՝ գէշ թռչնոց երկնից, եւ զմարմինս սրբոց քոց՝ գազանաց երկրի. եւ ոչ ոք էր որ թաղէր զնոսա:

 3:7 How very appropriate to this situation is the prophet’s lament: “O God, the heathen have come into thy inheritance; they have defiled thy holy temple. They have given the bodies of thy servant to the birds of the air for food, the flesh of thy saints to the beasts of the earth. And there was none to bury them:

3:8 Զայս ամենայն անցս պատուհասից, յայնժամ Հրէաստանի աղէտսն, եւ այժմ առ մերս հասեալ տարակուսանս՝ դէպ եղեւ առնուլ:

 3:8 All these disastrous horrors, which Judaea had experienced before, were now visited upon us:

3:9 Իսկ զօրքն Հայոց հանդերձ նախարարօքն եւ իշխանաւն իբրեւ տեսին զհէնս սաստիկս հասեալ ի վերայ նոցա՝ լքան ձեռք արանցն պատերազմողաց, եւ ոչ կարացին յարձակել ի վերայ հինին. զի թէպէտ եւ տեսանէին զկանայս եւ զմանկունս իւրեանց վարեալ ի գերութիւն, այլ քանզի նուազունք էին թուով՝ ոչ կարացին ի դիմի հարկանել նոցա. այլ նստեալ միայն ողբովք եւ աշխարանօք աւաղէին զկանայս եւ զմանուկս իւրեանց:

 3:9 When the troops of the Armenians with the lords (naxarars) and Prince (T’e’odoros R’shtuni) saw the ferocity of the marauders who had come against them, their resolve weakened and they were unable to attack the pillaging enemy. Even though they saw their women and children being led away into captivity, (the Armenian troops) were unable to resist, because they were few in number. Rather, they just sat sobbing, lamenting, and grieving for their women and children:

3:10 Իսկ Հագարացիքն առեալ տանէին զնոսա յերկիրն Ասորւոց. եւ դադարեցին յելանելոյ ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց [Ժ] ամս:

 3:10 The Hagarenes transported (the captives) to the country of Syria, and then they ceased coming against the land of the Armenians for ten years:

3:11 Ապա յետ այնորիկ յերեսուն եւ վեցերորդ ամի իշխանութեանն նոցա զօր ժողովեալ դարձեալ յարձակեցան ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց. որոց էին գլխաւորք Օթման եւ Օգբայ:

 3:11 However in the thirty-sixth year of their rule, they assembled a force and again attacked the land of the Armenians. The leaders (of this expedition) were ’Uthman and Oqba:

3:12 Եւ իբրեւ հասին ի սահմանս Հայոց՝ յերիս բաժանեալ առաջս՝ սփռեցան յասպատակս իւրեանց:

 3:12 When they reached the borders of Armenia, they divided into three fronts and began their raiding:

3:13 Առաջ մի հատեալ ընդ կողմն Վասպուրական աշխարհին՝ առին զաւանս եւ զամրոցս որ մինչեւ ի Նախջաւան քաղաք. եւ առաջ մի ընդ կողմն Տարօնոյ: Եւ միւս առաջն հասեալ ի Կոգովիտ՝ պաշարէին զամրոցն Արծափաց: Եւ գտեալ զմուտ բերդին՝ ի գիշերի գաղտագողի ելին ի նա, զի ի քուն գտին զպահապանսն, եւ առին զամրոցն, եւ զգտեալ արսն որ ի նմա արկին ընդ կապանօք:

 3:13 One front went by way of the land of Vaspurakan, capturing towns and fortresses as far as the city of Naxjawan. Another front went through Taro’n, and the third front reached Kogovit and besieged the fortress of Artsap’. Locating an entrance to the fortress, they went in secretly at night. They found the guards sleeping, and so they took that fortress. They bound the men they encountered there:

3:14 Եւ ի բազում անհոգութեան եղեալ այնուհետեւ՝ խառնակէին զազրալից պղծութեամբ ընդ կանայսն: Յորս գթացեալ ամենատեսն Աստուած՝ աստանօր ոչ անտես առնէր զհաւատացեալս անուան իւրոյ, այլ առաքէր ի վրէժխնդրութիւն չարեացն զոր գործեցին՝ զիշխանն Թէոդորոս. որոյ երագաթեւ յարձակմամբ իբրեւ զխոյանալ արծուոյ հասեալ ի վերայ հինին եկելոյ, եւ ընդ նմա արք վառեալք զինու, վաղվաղակի հասեալք՝ սատակէին զթշնամիսն իբրեւ արս [ԳՌ], եւ զկապեալսն արձակէին. եւ զսակաւ մնացորդսն թշնամեաց փախստական արարեալ՝ դարձուցանէին զգերեալսն. եւ զաւար եւ զկապուտ թշնամեացն ժողովեալ՝ դարձան խնդութեամբ, փառաւորելով զԱստուած, որ խնդրեաց զվրէժ ի թշնամեաց նոցա:

 3:14 Then they negligently took their pleasure, having abominably foul intercourse with the women. But all-seeing God took pity on the Armenians, not ignoring those who believed in His Name. As retribution for the evils the Arabs had wrought, He sent Prince T’e’odoros who, roaring like a lion, took six hundred armed men and quickly went against the marauders who had arrived there. Appearing at the fortress suddenly, T’e’odoros and his troops killed some [3,000] of the enemy, freed the bound men, pursued the few survivors, and retrieved the captives. Then, collecting the enemy’s loot and booty, they turned back joyfully glorifying God Who demanded vengeance from their enemy:

3:15 Իսկ այն զօրք, զոր յառաջագոյն պատմեցի, առեալ զաւար եւ զգերեալսն՝ գնացին աշխարհն Ասորւոց. եւ դադարեցին յետ այնորիկ [Բ] ամս:

 3:15 As for that other front of the army about which I narrated earlier, it took its spoil and captives and went to the land of Syria. After that they stopped raiding for two years:

3:16 Եւ զայս չարիս կատարեալ իշխանացն Իսմայելի ԱբուԲաքրայ, Օթմանայ եւ Ամրի յաւուրս իւրեանց՝ վախճանեցան:

 3:16 Having wrought such evil deeds during their day, the princes of the Ishmaelites—Abu Bakr, ’Uthman, and ’Umar—died:
