52:0 Յաղագս յառնելոյ օտար ազգաց ի վերայ երկրի մերում, եւ անմիաբանութեան նախարարաց մերոց ընդ իրեարս:

 52:0 The Aggression of Foreign Nations upon Our Land, and the Disunity among Our Naxarars:

52:1 Բայց եւ ես տխրական տրտմութեան բանս ինչ աստ յառաջ բերեմ ասել. Քանզի դրացիք մեր եւ ազգք որ շուրջ զմեօք են՝ Յունականք եւ Եգերացիք եւ Գուգարացիք եւ Ուտէացիք, հիւսիսական ազգք բնակեալք առ ոտամբն Կովկասու, ի մտի եդեալ եթէ գուցէ յինքեանս հետի աղագս գտանել մարթասցին՝ ոստիկանն չար թէ երբեք շէն գտցէ զքաղաքս եւ զաւանս եւ զգեօղս. վասն այնորիկ ի խլել եւ ի բրել, կորուսանել եւ յատակել ջանացան առ ստորոտով իւրաքանչիւր աշխարհաց իւրեանց:

 52:1 Now, I am compelled to utter words of a sorrowful nature, for the neighboring nations surrounding us, namely the Greeks, the people of Egrisi, Gugark’ and Uti, as well as the northern races living at the foot of the Caucasus considered carefully to shut the stable door after the horse was stolen so that the wicked ostikan would never find their cities, awans and villages in a prosperous state, and for this reason they tried to destroy everything that was to be found at the borders of their respective provinces:

52:2 եւ ապա խառն ընդ նոսին եւս աւազակք եւ սրիկայք ելին ի մարտս ընդ երկրի մերում. եւ բազում ինչ այն էր՝ որ ի նմանէ անցք ընդ աստուածաշէն եկեղեցիս անցանէին յեղծումն եւ ի խոպանումն եւ յապականումն վարակեալ:

 52:2 Mixed among the latter were also thieves and brigands, who rose in arms against our country. At their hands the god-built churches suffered numerous calamities, which left them in a state of waste, desolation and ruin:

52:3 Եւ զբազում զաշխարհս իբրեւ զանապատ՝ անկոխ անջրդի ցուցեալ տապալէին. եւ գրեթէ իբրեւ զերկիր, որ ոչ անց մարդ ընդ նա եւ ոչ բնակեցաւ ի նմա որդի մարդոյ՝ այնպէս զապատն անապատ առնէին:

 52:3 They devastated many provinces and turned them into deserts, untrodden and barren, almost like a land through which men had never passed, and where the Son of Man had never dwelt. Thus, they turned the habitable places into wasteland:

52:4 Եւ վասն ընդ միմեանս բախելոյ բազում ճապաղիս արեան հեղեալ՝ դիակամբք լնուին զերեսս երկրի մերոյ, եւ առ հասարակ յաւարի առեալ կապուտ բազում՝ խաղացուցանէին յինքեանս ըստ իւրաքանչիւր աշխարհաց կշիռ:

 52:4 In the encounters among themselves, they shed much blood and covered the face of our land with corpses. Generally taking great quantities of booty, each one carried a proportional amount to his respective land:

52:5 Եւ այսպէս անմարդացեալ եւ անզաւակացեալ, խոպանացեալ եւ անշքեղացեալ այնուհետեւ աւանք եւ շէնք մեր եղեն իբրեւ զանդաստան մացառախիտ. Եւ ցամաքեցան բողբոջք բուսոց արտավարաց եւ արօտից. Եւ քաղաքք մեր կործանեցան առ ի չգոյէ բնակչաց, եւ երկրագործք մեր սպառեցան եւ սուգ զգեցան:

 52:5 Thus, depopulated, barren, desolate and devastated, our awans and shens resembled the orchards that are full of bushes, where the shoots of the plants in the meadows dried out. Our cities were destroyed by lack of population; our tillers were worn out and in mourning:

52:6 Եւ այսպէս ծածկեցին զմեզ անարգանք մեր, եւ ի մեզ բաւանդակեալ լցաւ մարգարէութիւնն Եսայեայ, եթէ «Երկիր ձեր աւերակ, քաղաքք ձեր հրձիգք, զաշխարհս ձեր առաջի ձեր օտարք կերիցեն՝ աւերեալ եւ կործանեալ յազգաց օտարաց:

 52:6 Thus, our shame covered us, and through us the prophesy of Isaiah came to its fulfilment: “Your country is desolate, your cities are burned by fire; strangers devour your land in your presence; it is made desolate, and overthrown by foreign nations:

52:7 Իսկ իբրեւ այսպէս կրեցաք տագնապս տարակուսից ի հինից օտարաց, ի մերս ապա լինէաք ի թագաւորս եւ յիշխանս ակնկառոյց, այլ եւ ի պէտս եւ ի նախարարս երկրի մերոյ: Եւ յուսացեալ սպասէաք ոչ եւս ընդ փորձութեանն խառն վրիպիլ սոցա եւ անկանիլ. այլ ջան առաջի դնել եւ ելս նեղութեան հնարել, եւ վայելչաբար ի միասին կապակցիլ հասարակ եղբայրութեամբ եւ իբրեւ զմի այր միանալ. եւ ընդ Դաւթի պարսաքարել զնորս Գողիաթու մսեղէն բուրգն, կամ ընդ Գեդէոնի ըստ հոլովելոյ նկանակին սրով Տեառն վանել զճամբարս թշնամեացն. կամ ըստ Յայէլի թերեւս գոնէ յետ զկաթն արբուցանելոյ՝ ցցով վարսաւորել ընդ ծամելիսն Սիսարայ. կամ իբրեւ զՄակաբէ ի շուրջ պատեալ պատերազմէն փրկել:

 52:7 While we suffered such afflictions at the hands of the foreign invaders, we had our eyes fixed on our kings, as well as the princes, lords and naxarars of our land, and raised our hopes high, thinking that the latter would not succumb to the contest and fall, but make the attempt to find a solution to this misfortune, and befittingly unite in a common brotherhood with one spirit, and like David hurl the sling at the carnal pyramid of the new Goliath, or like Gideon and the cake of barley bread that tumbled and put to flight the forces of the enemy with the sword of the Lord, or like Jael smite the nail into the temples of Sisera after making him drink the milk, or like Maccabee rescue themselves from the siege:

52:8 եւ այսպէս ազատել զկաթուղիկէ եկեղեցի եւ լուծանել զլուծ ի պարանոցէ հաւատացելոց, եւ շահել զորդիս սպանելոց:

 52:8 Thus (we expected) (them to liberate the catholic church, and liberate the necks of the faithful from the sway (of the enemy), as well as save the children of those that were killed:

52:9 Բայց ոչ զայս եղեւ տեսանել մեզ, այլ զնորին հակառակն կրեցաք. Վասն զի նուազունքն քան զմեծամեծսն ձեռներէց լինել ջանային, եւ ծառայքն ըստ Սողոմոնի հնարէին, զի զտեարս տրեխաւորեալ՝ ի գետնի գնացուսցեն եւ ինքեանք ելցեն յերիվարս ահապարանոցս եւ առաթուր հարողս՝ խրոխտացեալք եւ սոնքացեալք մեծաւ ապստամբութեամբ:

 52:9 However, this is not what we witnessed; on the contrary it was the exact opposite. For the poor tried to surpass the rich, and the servants, in accordance with Solomon, maneuvered to make their masters crawl on the ground, and mount the fiery steeds of the latter. They defied those who trampled them under foot and became arrogant in a great rebellion:

52:10 Իսկ թագաւորք մեր եւ պետք եւ իշխանք, զորս ի բնէ նախարարութիւնքն էին՝ ջանային վարատել եւ խլել յիւրաքանչիւրոցն բնակութեանց, եւ ըստ ախորժից իմն ձեռական եւ նոր ստեղծանել պայազատս եւ սպասալարս:

 52:10 On the other hand, our kings, lords and princes tried to break up and take away the homes of each one of the original naxarardoms, and in accord with their whims, created new payazats and spasalars of their own:

52:11 Այլ եւ եղբայր ընդ եղբօր եւ ազգայինք ընդ ազգայինս ընդվզեալ ի նախանձ եւ ի չարակնութիւն եւ ի գրգռութիւն եւ ի կատարեալ ատելութիւն ընդ միմեանս բերէին:

 52:11 Brother rose against brother, and kinsman against kinsman, because jealousy, malevolence, agitation and absolute hatred turned them against one another:

52:12 Եւ այսպէս համագունդ ընդ միմեանս հարեալք՝ հակառակութիւն եւ ի կռիւ պայքարէին. եւ միշտ սուր յազդեր ունելով՝ բազում եւս քան զթշնամիսն հեղուին ի միմեանց զարեան ճապաղիս:

 52:12 Thus, falling on one another en masse, they fought as enemies, and having always their swords ready at their sides, shed more of their own blood than that of the enemy:

52:13 եւ առ հասարակ զքաղաքս եւ զգեօղս եւ զաւանս եւ զագարակս, այլ եւ զտունս իւրեանց քանդէին ձեռօք իւրեանց. եւ գրեթէ այն իսկ ոճիրք հակառակութեան գտան պատճառք հինիցն՝ եկելոց ի վերայ մեր, ըստ Սողոմոնի՝ թէ «Ատելութիւն գրգռէ զբարկութիւն:

 52:13 They tore down with their own hands all of their cities, villages, awans, agaraks and houses. These crimes which they committed out of enmity were the cause of the invasions of the brigands against us, in accordance with the words of Solomon: “Hatred stirs up strife:

52:14 Եւ առ մեզ լցաւ միւս մարգարէութիւնն, եթէ «Անկցի այր ընդ այր, եւ այր ընդ ընկերի իւրում, ընդհարցի մանուկ ընդ ծերոյն, եւ անարգն ընդ պատուականին:

 52:14 With us the other prophesy also came to its fulfilment: “Man shall fall upon man, and neighbor upon neighbor; the child shall strike the old man and the base shall (insult) the honorable:

52:15 Այսպէս ապա ամենայն առաքինի քաջողջութիւն եւ շինութիւն եւ խաղաղութիւն քայքայեցաւ, եւ եղծումն եւ ապականումն զտեղի փոխաբերեաց:

 52:15 Thus, every virtue, uprightness, prosperity, and peace crumbled, and erosion and desolation came in their place:

52:16 Եւ սակս այսորիկ ապա մարգարէն ընդ մեզ ողբակցէ զառաջին բարեզարդութիւնն եւ զվերջին ընդդիմակազմութիւնս, եթէ «Առաջ նորա դրախտ փափկութեան, եւ վերջ նորադաշտ ապականութեան:

 52:16 In view of these the prophet joins us lamenting the former affluence and the present disorder: “Before him is a garden of delight, and behind him a plain of desolation:
