31:0 Յաղագս թէ ո՛րպէս զկնի մեռանելոյն հայրապետին Ներսիսի, եւ կամ ո՛րպէս ի նախանձ մտեալ տապալեաց թագաւորն Պապ զամենայն եդեալ կրօնս կանոնիցն` որ ինչ եդան ի Ներսիսէ առ կենդանութեամբ նորա ի նմանէն:

 31:0 How king Pap, following the death of the patriarch Nerses, destroyed out of jealousy all the canonical rules which he had established:

31:1 Իսկ թագաւորն Հայոց Պապ, զի թէպէտ եւ սպան զհայրապետն աշխարհին Հայոց զՆերսէս, սակայն ոչ յագեցաւ մահուամբ նորա, այլ ջանայր այսպէս` թէ զինչ միանգամ կարգք իցեն ուղղութեան ի Ներսիսէ եդեալ յեկեղեցւոջն, եղծեսցէ եւ խանգարեսցէ:

 31:1 Now Pap, the king of Armenia, although he had killed the patriarch of the land of Armenia, Nerses, nonetheless was not satiated by his death. Rather he tried to corrupt and obstruct the correct arrangements which Nerses had introduced into the Church:

31:2 Եւ սկսաւ նախանձ վարել ընդդէմ յառաջագոյն կանոնելոցն ի նմանէ. եւ սկսաւ հրաման տալ յայտնապէս յաշխարհին աւերել զայրենոցսն եւ զորբանոցսն` զոր շինեալ էր Ներսէս ի գաւառս գաւառս, եւ աւերել զկուսաստանսն ի գաւառս գաւառս եւ յաւանս յաւանս պարսպեալս եւ ամրացեալս, որ նորին Ներսիսի էր շինեալ վասն ամրապահս առեւանգոցն զգուշութեան:

 31:2 He began to act with jealousy regarding the canons established by him previously. He began to clearly order that the home] for widows and orphans which Nerses had built in the different districts of the land be destroyed, and that the walled residences for virgins which Nerses had built in the different districts and awans, built to protect securely from kidnapping, be destroyed:

31:3 Քանզի յիւրում կենդանութեան երանելոյն Ներսիսի էր շինեալ. շինեաց զայս կուսաստանս յամենայն գաւառս, զի որ միանգամ կուսանք եւ հաւատացեալք իցեն` անդր ժողովեսցին ի պահս եւ յաղօթս, եւ կերակրել յաշխարհէ եւ յիւրաքանչիւր ընտանեաց:

 31:3 During his lifetime the venerable Nerses had built these residences in all the districts for virgins who were believers so that they could be gathered there for fasting and praying, to be fed from the land and from each family:

31:4 Զայն աւերել հրամայէր Պապ թագաւորն, եւ զկուսանսն հաւատացեալս տայր հրաման ի խառնակութիւն պղծութեան:

 31:4 King Pap ordered that these institutions be destroyed and that the believing virgins be subjected to abominable intercourse:

31:5 Եւ յամենայն աւանս էր շինեալ նորին Ներսիսի եւ հիւանդանոցս, յամենայն կողմանց եւ ռոճիկս եւ դարմանս կարգեալս, եւ արս հաւատարիմս թողեալ տեսուչս հիւանդացն եւ աղքատացն. նոյնպէս եւ այնոցիկ յանձն արարեալ որք երկիւղածքն էին յԱստուծոյ, որք դատաստանացն յաւիտենականացն եւ գալստեանն Քրիստոսի սպասէին:

 31:5 In all the awans and regions Nerses had also built hospitals, setting up stipends and provisions and he had left reliable overseers for the sick and poor, people who feared God and were awaiting the eternal judgements and the coming of Christ:

31:6 Զվերակացուսն հալածէր թագաւորն յիւրաքանչիւր տեսչութենէ, եւ զտեղիսն ի բաց աւերէր:

 31:6 The king chased the overseers from their superintendency and totally destroyed the places:

31:7 Զոր վերակացուսն կարգեալ էր յաղագս չքաւորացն եւ աղքատաց տեսուչ, զնոսա ի բաց հալածէր. եւ հրաման տայր ամենայն աշխարհի իշխանութեանն իւրոյ. Աղքատքն բայց եթէ ի մոյր ելցեն. այլ անդր ոք ինչ մի՛ իշխեսցէ տանել, եթէ ոչ նոքա եկեսցեն ժտեսցեն աղաչեսցեն, ապա թէ գտանել հազիւ ինչ կարասցեն:

 31:7 Those who had been appointed overseers for the indigent and poor Pap persecuted completely. And he commanded every land under his sway: “Let the poor go out begging, let no one take food to them there in the poor houses. If they do not go forth beseeching and begging, they will hardly find anything:

31:8 Եւ զկարգս պտղոյն եւ զտասանորդացն` որ ի նախնեացն կարգեալ սովորութիւն էր տալ յեկեղեցին, վասն այնորիկ հանէր հրաման ընդ աշխարհ` զի մի՛ ոք տացէ:

 31:8 As for the arrangments for the ptghi and [tasanordi] (tithes) which had been stipulated from the time of the ancestors as customary for giving to the Church, Pap issued this order throughout the land: “Let no one give them:

31:9 Եւ յաւուրսն Ներսիսի հայրապետի ոչ ոք իշխէր ի նմանէ հանել կամ թողուլ զկին իւր զամուսին յամենայն երկիրն Հայոց. զոր միանգամ քօղով կամ պսակաւ հարսանեացն օրհնութեամբ առեալ էր. եւ ոչ այլ առնել միւսանգամ իշխէր ոք համարձակել:

 31:9 During the days of patriarch Nerses no one dared to remove from himself or abandon his wedded wife throughout the entire country of Armenia, a wife he had taken with the blessing of the nuptial veil or crown. Nor in Nerses’ day did anyone dare to take another’s wife:

31:10 Եթէ յանկարծ մեռանէր ոք, ոչ ոք իշխէր անյուսութեամբ արտաքոյ կարգի կանոնի եկեղեցւոյ լալ զմեռեալն. եւ ոչ կոծ ոք դնէր կամ աշխարանս մեռելոյն, եւ ոչ ձայնս ոք արկանէր ի վերայ մեռելոյն յաւուրսն Ներսիսի. այլ լոկ արտասուօք եւ ըստ արժանի սաղմոսիւք եւ օրհնութեամբ, կանթեղօք եւ մոմեղինօք լուցելովք զմեռեալսն յուղարկէին:

 31:10 If someone died unexpectedly, no one dared to weep for the deceased without hope, beyond the established canon of the Church, nor to lament excessively nor to make noises over the deceased. They would merely bury the deceased with tears, fitting psalms, blessings, lamps and lit candles:

31:11 Իսկ յետ մահուան նորա այնուհետեւ ամենայն մարդ առին հրաման համարձակութեամբ ի թագաւորէն, թողուլ զկանայս զամուսինս իւրեանց. էր զի մի այր տասն կին փոխէր. եւ առ հասարակ յանօրէնութիւն դարձան միանգամայն:

 31:11 But after Nerses’ death, everyone boldly took the king’s command and left their wedded wives, to the point that one man changed women ten times. And simultaneously they all turned to impiety:

31:12 Ապա յետ մահուան Ներսիսի յորժամ զմեռեալսն լային, փողովք եւ փանդռօք եւ վնօք զկոծսն պարուցն կաքաւելով, զտիգսն հատեալս, զերեսս պատառեալս, արք եւ կանայք պղծութեամբ ճիւաղութեամբ պարուք դէմ ընդդէմ հարկանելով, եւ կամ ափս հարկանելով, զմեռեալսն յուղարկէին:

 31:12 After Nerses’ death, when the people mourned the dead, they wept, they danced mourning dances to the accompaniment of horns, pandirs and vins, slashing their arms, tearing their faces, men and women committing monstrous abominations as they faced each other in the dance, striking their palms. Thus, did they bury the dead:

31:13 Իսկ յամսն Ներսիսի զաղքատս բնաւ ամենեւին ի մոյր ոչ տեսանէր ընդ ամենայն սահմանսն Հայոց. այլ անդէն ի հանգստեան նոցին, այս ինքն յօրկանոցսն, ամենայն մարդիկ տանէին զամենայն պիտոյս նոցա. անդէն իսկ անկարօտ յամենայն ումեքէ լցեալ էին:

 31:13 Now during Nerses’ day, the poor were never seen begging throughout all the borders of Armenia. Rather, they all remained in their places of repose, that is, in the leprosaria, and everyone took them everything they needed. Thus, were they satiated, not needful of anyone:

31:14 Իսկ յետ մահուն քահանայապետին թէ առնէր ոք հանգիստ աղքատացն մեծ պատիժս կրէր ի թագաւորէն:

 31:14 But after the death of the chief-priest, if anyone did anything to give ease to the poor, he would bear great punishment from the king:

31:15 Իսկ յաւուրսն Ներսիսի ընդ ամենայն երկիրն Հայոց կարգք պաշտաման եկեղեցւոյն մեծապէս պայծառացեալ էր. եւ բազմութիւն սրբոց պաշտօնէիցն կանոնելոցն:

 31:15 During Nerses’, day the orders of worship of the Church were especially radiant and there was a multitude of blessed canonical clerics:

31:16 Եւ յիշատակ սրբոց վկայից յաւուրս նորա յամենայն տեղիս Հայոց մեծախումբ ժողովովք հանապազ պայծառանային, եւ պատիւ հարցն եպիսկոպոսաց յամենայն գաւառս Հայոց յաճախէր ըստ արժանի իւրեանց. եւ կարգք վանականաց եւ ի շէնս եւ յանշէնս առ հասարակ ծաղկեալ:

 31:16 and commemoration of the blessed martyrs were always glowingly being conducted everywhere in Armenia in huge assemblies, and the patiw of the father-bishops grew in accordance with their worth in all the districts of Armenia while the orders of monastics flourished both in the shen and the non-shen places:

31:17 Այլ ամենայն եղծեալ ապականեցաւ խանգարեցաւ յետ մահուան նորա:

 31:17 But after his death, all this was corrupted, polluted, and obstructed:

31:18 Իսկ յաւուրս քահանայապետութեան Ներսիսի ամենայն գաւառք Հայոց յամենայն ի շէնս եւ ի գիւղս յամենայն կողմանս Հայոց առ հասարակ ի հրամանէ քահանայապետին էին շինեալ օտարատունք հիւանդանոցք օտարանոցք. եւ ամենայն մարդիկք երկրին Հայոց էին պտղաբերք եւ ողորմածք առ ի յիշել զաղքատս եւ զնեղեալս, զտառապեալս եւ զօտարս, զհարստահարս, զնշդեհս, զպանդուխտ, զհիւրս, զանցաւորս. եւ էր նոցա կարգեալ վերակացուս սրբոյն Ներսիսի, եւ դարմանս ի տեղեաց տեղեաց:

 31:18 During the days of the chief-priest Nerses, by his order people had built in all the shens and villages of all parts of the districts of Armenia, dwellings for foreigners, hospitals, otaranotsk, and everyone in the country of Armenia gave ptghi and alms, remembering the poor, the exploited, those in tribulation, foreigners, the exploited, rebels, exiles, guests and transients. For them the blessed Nerses set up superintendents and provisions everywhere:

31:19 Իսկ յետ մահու նորա աւերեաց զայն ամենայն թագաւորն Պապ, եւ անարգեաց զպատիւ եկեղեցւոյ. եւ բազում ինչ կարգ եւ կանոնաց ուղղութեան յօրինուածոց` զոր եդ հայրապետն Ներսէս, եւ անցեալ դարձեալ ի մոռացօնս զամենայն կարգեալն տապալէր:

 31:19 But after his death king Pap destroyed all this and dishonored the patiw of the Church. Furthermore, many correctional arrangements and canons which the patriarch Nerses instituted were overturned and forgotten:

31:20 Յետ նորա ելիցն յաշխարհէս բազում գաւառք Հայոց եւ բազում մարդիկ ի հնութիւն դիւապաշտութեան դարձան եւ ընդ բազում տեղիս Հայոց կուռս կանգնեցին ի համարձակութենէ թագաւորին Պապայ. զի ոչ գոյր յանդիմանիչ, եւ ոչ ոք էր այն` յորմէ խիթային. զինչ եւ կամէին գործել, համարձակութեամբ գործէին. բազումք պատկերս կանկնեալ` երկիր պագանէին:

 31:20 After Nerses’ departure from the world, many districts of Armenia and many people returned to the ancient worship of the gods, and they erected idols in many places of Armenia because of the boldness of king Pap. For there was no one to reprimand them, no one before whom they felt embarassment. Whatever they wanted to do they did brazenly. After erecting many images, they worshipped them:

31:21 Եւ հատ եւս յարքունիս Պապ թագաւոր զհող եկեղեցւոյն, զոր տուեալ էր թագաւորին Տրդատայ առ մեծաւն Գրիգորիւ քահանայապետիւ ի սպաս պաշտաման եկեղեցւոյն ընդ ամենայն երկիրն Հայոց:

 31:21 Moreover, king Pap confiscated for the court the Church land which king Trdat of Armenia had given in service to the worship of the Church in the entire country of Armenia, during the time of the great chief-priest Gregory:

31:22 Զի յեւթն հողոյն զհինգն հատանէր յարքունիս, եւ զերկուսն միայն թողոյր, երկուս հողս:

 31:22 Of seven lands, Pap confiscated five, leaving only two for the Church:

31:23 Եւ ըստ հողոյն թողոյր երկուս երկուս առ գեւղ մի երէց եւ սարկաւագ, եւ զայն` սպասու կացուցանէր յիւր ի ծառայութեան զեղբարս եւ զորդիս երիցանցն եւ սարկաւագացն:

 31:23 In accordance with the size of the land, he left two clerics in service, a priest and a deacon, while placing in service to himself the brothers and sons of priests and deacons:

31:24 Զի նմա այսպէս թուեցաւ` եթէ զայն չար ինչ կամացն հեճուկս Ներսիսի առնիցէ ի կենդանեաց առ մեռեալս, վասն թշնամութեանն` զոր ունէր ընդ նմա:

 31:24 He thought by behaving in this fashion, to express the hostility he had for Nerses, he would move despite his policies:

31:25 Եւ զայն ոչ ածէր զմտաւ` թէ զանձն կորուսանէ:

 31:25 But he never thought about his personal ruination:

31:26 Եւ ի ժամանակին նուաղէին ամենայն կարգք եկեղեցւոյ պաշտամանն սպասուցն յամենայն երկիրն Հայոց:

 31:26 In that period all the orders of Church worship declined throughout the entire country of Armenia:
