2:26 Իսկ արդ յերկուս եւ յերիս կռիւս Տէր ինքնին մեծաւ զաւրութեամբ աւգնեաց մեզ, որպէս զի զանուն քաջութեան ժառանգեցաք, եւ զզաւրսն արքունի չարաչար հարաք, եւ զմոգսն անողորմ սատակեցաք, եւ զպղծութիւն կռապաշտութեանն ի տեղեաց տեղեաց սրբեցաք, զանաւրէն հրաման թագաւորին եղծաք ապականեցաք, զխռովութիւն ծովուն ցածուցաք, լեառնացեալ ալիքն դաշտացան, բարձրադէզ փրփուրն սպառեցաւ, գազանացեալ սրտմտութիւնն դադարեաց:

 2:26 Now the Lord himself has helped us with his great power in two or three battles so that we acquired the repute of valor, cruelly smote the royal forces, mercilessly slew the magi, cleansed from various places the impurity of idolatry, overthrew the king’s impious command, calmed the fury of the sea; the mountainous waves became smooth, the high-piled foam disappeared, the ferocious wrath ceased:

2:27 Որ ի վերայ ամպոց որոտայր, նկուն եղեալ՝ քան զսովորական բնութիւնն ի վայր գտաւ՝ ընդ մեզ խաւսելով:

 2:27 He who thundered above the clouds humbled and abased himself more than is his natural custom on speaking with us:

2:28 Որ բանիւ հրամանաւ կամէր կատարել զչարութիւնն իւր ի վերայ սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ, արդ աղեղամբ եւ նիզակաւ եւ սրով կռուի:

 2:28 He who wished by the mere word of his command to accomplish his evil designs on the holy church, now struggles to do so with bow and lance and sword:

2:29 Որ իբրեւ զհանդերձ կարծէր ունել մեզ զքրիստոնէութիւնն, արդ իբրեւ զգոյն ի մարմնոյ չկարէ շրջել, թերեւս եւ ոչ այլ կարասցէ մինչեւ ի կատարած:

 2:29 He who supposed that we put on Christianity like a garment, now realizes that as he cannot change the color of his skin, so he will perhaps never be able to accomplish his designs:

2:30 Քանզի հիմունք սորա հաստատութեամբ եդեալ են ի վերայ վիմին անշարժութեան, ո՛չ ի վերայ երկրի, այլ ի վեր յերկինս, ուր ոչ անձրեւք իջանեն եւ ոչ հողմք շնչեն եւ ոչ հեղեղս յարուցանեն:

 2:30 For the foundations of our Christianity are set on the unshakable rock, not on earth but above in heaven where no rains fall, no winds blow, and no floods rise:

2:31 Եւ մեք թէպէտ եւ մարմնով յերկրի եմք, այլ հաւատով յերկինս եմք շինեալ, ուր ոչ ոք կարէ հասանել յանձեռագործ շինուածն Քրիստոսի:

 2:31 Although in the body we are on earth, yet by faith we are established in heaven where no one can reach the building of Christ not made by human hands:

2:32 Հաստատուն կացէք յանշուշտ զաւրագլուխն մեր, որ ոչ երբէք մոռասցի զգործս նահատակութեան ձերոյ:

 2:32 Stand firm in our sure general, who will never forget your heroic deeds:

2:33 Ո՛վ քաջք, մեզ այս մեծապէս է, զոր կատարեաց Աստուած ի ձեռն մերոյ բնութեանս, յորում եւ զաւրութիւնն Աստուծոյ մեծապէս երեւի:

 2:33 My valiant men, this is a great thing that God has worked through us, in which God’s power is greatly revealed:

2:34 Զի եթէ զայլս կոտորելով ի վերայ աստուածային աւրինացն՝ պարծանս անձանց ժառանգեցաք եւ զքաջ անուն ազգատոհմին մերոյ թողաք եկեղեցւոյ, եւ վարձուց ակնկալութիւն ի Տեառնէ է, որ պահի իւրաքանչիւր ումեք ի մէնջ ըստ սրտին յաւժարութեան եւ ըստ գործոց առաջարկութեան, որչափ եւս առաւել՝ եթէ մեք մեռանիցիմք ի վերայ մեծի վկայութեան Տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի, որում եւ երկնաւորքն են ցանկացեալ, եթէ գոյր հնար:

 2:34 For if by slaughtering others for the sake of the divine religion we have gained glory for ourselves, and bequeathed the valiant name of our family to the church—and the expectation of reward stems from the Lord, preserved for each one of us according to the willingness of his heart and the achievement of his deeds—how much more would we gain if we were to die for the great witness of our Lord Jesus Christ, which even the heavenly beings would desire were it possible:

2:35 Եւ զի այս պարգեւք ոչ ամենեցուն է անկ, այլ որում պատրաստի ի բարերար Տեառնէն, եւ մեզ այս ոչ եթէ յարդար գործոց ինչ պատահեաց, այլ յաննախանձ պարգեւատուէն. որպէս եւ ասէ իսկ ի սուրբ կտակարանին. Ուր առաւել եղեն մեղքն, անդէն առաւելան շնորհքն Աստուծոյ:

 2:35 And since these rewards are not appropriate for everyone but only for him who is prepared by the benevolent Lord, this has befallen us not from any just deeds of our own but from the liberal bestower of gifts, as he indeed said in the Holy Testament: ’Where sin abounded, there the grace of God was even more abundant. ’:

2:36 Եւ մեզ կարի քաջ ի դէպ ելանէ հրաման պատասխանւոյս այսորիկ. որպէս եւ առաւելապէս երեւեցաք մարդկան ամբարշտեալք, կրկին առաւելապէս երեւեսցուք արդարացեալք մարդկան եւ հրեշտակաց եւ Հաւրն ամենեցուն:

 2:36 Very apposite is the injunction of this saying. As we appeared to men most impious, in double measure shall we appear the most righteous to men and angels and the Father of all:

2:37 Զի որ աւր լուան ապաքէն զմէնջ մարդիկ ի գործ ամբարշտութեանն, արտասուս բազում հեղան ի սուրբ եկեղեցւոջն, եւ եւս բազմագոյն ի մէջ սիրելեացն մերոց:

 2:37 For on the day when men heard that we were implicated in an impious deed, many tears were shed in the holy church and even more among our dear ones:

2:38 Նա եւ ընկերք մեր սրով սրտմտեալ սպառնային մեզ, եւ մահ դառնութեան ի վերայ հասուցանել կամէին. եւ ծառայքն մեր սարտուցեալ փախչէին ի մէնջ:

 2:38 Even our comrades in their anger threatened us with the sword, wishing to inflict a bitter death on us, and our servants fled from us in horror:

2:39 Եւ հեռաւորաց, որոց լուեալ էր զանուն քրիստոնէութեան մերոյ, քանզի ոչ էին տեղեակ խորհրդոցն մերոց, ողբս ի բերան առեալ անդադար աշխարէին զմեզ, եւ անգիտութեամբ հայհոյութիւնս բազումս խաւսէին զմէնջ:

 2:39 Distant people who had heard the repute of our Christianity, since they were unaware of our intentions lamented and bewailed us unceasingly, in their ignorance heaping many blasphemies on us:

2:40 Եւ որ մեծն քան զամենայն ասացից. ո՛չ միայն մարդիկ յերկրի՝ այլ եւ հրեշտակք յերկինս զերեսս իւրեանց դարձուցին ի մէնջ, զի մի տխուր դիմաւք հայեսցին ի մեզ:

 2:40 And I shall mention something greater than all this: not only men on earth, but also the angels in heaven turned their faces from us so as not to look on us with saddened countenance:

2:41 Եւ ահա եկն եհաս ժամանակ, զի զամենայն զկեղտ անուն ի մէնջ ի բաց բարձցուք:

 2:41 Behold the time has come for us to cast off every suspicion of infamy:

2:42 Յայնժամ իբրեւ զթախծեալ սգաւոր՝ յոգի եւ ի մարմին էաք տրտմեալք, այսաւր զուարթացեալք եւ զգաստացեալք յերկոսեան առ հասարակ եմք լրջացեալք. քանզի եւ զՏէրն բարերար ընդ մեզ տեսանեմք յառաջնորդութիւն. չէ մեր մարդ զաւրավար, այլ զաւրագլուխն ամենայն մարտիրոսաց:

 2:42 Then we were afflicted in soul and body like grieving mourners. But today we are joyful, happy, and yet sober in both respects at once, for we see the benevolent Lord with us in the lead. Our commander is no man but the general of all martyrs:

2:43 Երկիւղ՝ թերահաւատութեան է նշանակ. զթերահաւատութիւն մեք ի մէնջ վաղ մերժեցաք, ընդ նմին եւ երկիւղն փախիցէ ի մտաց եւ ի խորհրդոց մերոց:

 2:43 Fear is a sign of doubt. Long ago we rejected doubt, likewise let fear flee from our minds and thoughts:

2:44 Զայս ամենայն առաքինի զաւրավարն խաւսեցաւ ընդ ամենայն բազմութեանն. դարձեալ եւ զմի մի ի նոցանէ քաջալերէր ի ծածուկ եւ սրտապնդէր, եւ զամենայն պակասութիւն աղքատութեան լնոյր:

 2:44 In these terms the virtuous general addressed the whole host. Furthermore, he exhorted and encouraged each of them in private, filling all the wants of the indigent:

2:45 Որոյ ոչ ինչ գոյր զաւրականին, յանձնէ եւ յընկերաց մատուցանէր. որոյ զէն չէր՝ զէն պատրաստէր. եւ որում հանդերձ պիտոյ էր, հանդերձ զգեցուցանէր, եւ որում երիվար պիտոյ էր, երիվար տայր:

 2:45 Whichever soldier lacked something he provided from his own resources or his companions’. He supplied arms to the one who had no arms; he clothed the one who needed clothes; he gave a horse to the one who lacked a horse:

2:46 Եւ առատ ռոճկաւք ուրախ առնէր զամենեսեան, եւ զուարթագին զինքն ցուցանէր ամենեցուն:

 2:46 With liberal pay he contented them all, showing himself very cheerful to everyone:

2:47 Եւ ըստ պատերազմական կարգին՝ զքաջ արանց զյիշատակարանս հանապազ երկրորդէր առաջի նոցա. զի եւ ինքն իսկ տեղեակ էր ի մանկութենէ իւրմէ սուրբ կտակարանաց:

 2:47 In accordance with military practice he continually repeated to them the records of valiant men, for he himself had been learned in the Holy Scriptures from his youth:

2:48 Զոր եւ ի ձեռն առեալ զքաջ նկարագիրն Մակաբայեցւոց՝ ընթեռնոյր ի լսելիս ամենեցուն, եւ յորդառատ բանիւք զելս իրացն իմացուցանէր նոցա, ո՛րպէս մարտուցեալ կռուեցան ի վերայ աստուածատուր աւրինացն ընդդէմ թագաւորին Անտիոքացւոց:

 2:48 Taking up the brave model of the Maccabees, he read it out to them all, telling them in fluent words of the outcome of events—how they fought and struggled against the king of Antioch for their God-given religion:

2:49 Զի թէպէտ եւ ի նմին կատարեցան մահուամբ, սակայն անուն քաջութեան եկաց մինչեւ ցայսաւր ժամանակի, ո՛չ միայն յերկրի, այլ եւ անմոռաց յերկինս:

 2:49 For although they had been martyred in that battle, yet the fame of their valor has survived to this very day, not only on earth but also eternally in heaven:

2:50 Նա եւ զայն յուշ առնէր զաւրականին, ո՛րպէս ազգատոհմն Մատաթեայ քակտեալ բաժանեցան ի միաբանութենէ նորա, դարձան ի հրաման թագաւորին, շինեցին մեհեանս, մատուցին զոհս պղծութեան, խոտորեցան յԱստուծոյ եւ ընկալան զպատիժս պատուհասի մահուան ի սուրբ միաբանելոցն. իսկ Մատաթի եւ որք ընդ նմայն էին, ոչ ինչ լքեալ թուլացան, այլ եւս առաւելապէս պնդեցան, եւ ձեռնամուխ եղեն ի գործ պատերազմին բազում ժամանակս:

 2:50 Likewise, he recalled to the soldiers how the relatives of Mattathias had split away from the union, returned to the king’s service, built temples, offered impure sacrifices, abandoned God, and had received the punishment of death from the holy covenanters. But Mattathias and his companions had not weakened or slackened; rather, they became even firmer and plunged into war for an extended period:
