6:1 Խաւսել սկսաւ թագաւորն եւ ասէ. «Քանի՞ցս անգամ տուեալ է քեզ խրատ եւ պատուէր, զի մի՛ երկրորդեսցես առաջի իմ զհաստուածս բանիցդ առասպելաց, զոր յաւդեալ եւ ուսեալդ ես, զոր ոչդ վայել է քեզ խաւսել:

 6:1 The king began to speak and note: “How often have I given you warning and commands not to repeat in my presence these compositions of fabulous stories which you have pieced together and learned up and which it is unfitting for you to tell:

6:2 վասն որոյ ես խնայեցի ի քեզ՝ իբրեւ ի վաստակաւոր, զի եկեսցես ի կարգ ուղղութեան՝ պաշտել զդիսն:

 6:2 So, I have spared you, because of your services, in order that you might come to the right path and worship the gods:

6:3 Զորոց դու առեալ զնոցա պատիւն՝ ումպէտ կարդաս արարիչ. եւ որ են իսկ ճշմարտիւ արարիչ՝ թշնամանես, եւ զմեծն Անահիտ, որով կեայ եւ զկենդանութիւն կրէ երկիրս Հայոց:

 6:3 whose honor you have slighted by calling someone else creator. And those who are truly creator you insult, calling lifeless and mute the great Anahit, who gives life and fertility to our land of Armenia:

6:4 եւ ընդ նմին եւ զմեծն եւ զարին Արամազդ, զարարիչն երկնի եւ երկրի. ընդ նմին եւ զայլ աստուածսն կոչեցեր անշշունչս եւ անմռունչս. եւ ի մեզ եւս ձգտեցար դնել թշնամանս, համարձակեցար ասել ձիս եւ ջորիս:

 6:4 and with her the great and noble Aramazd, the creator of heaven and earth, and with him the other gods. And you have gone so far as to insult us as well, daring to call us horses and mules:

6:5 Եւ քանզի զամենայն թշնամանս յաճախեցեր, մինչ իշխեցեր եւս մեզ ասել անասունս՝ արդ ես արկից զքեզ ի տանջանս եւ եդից դանդանաւանդ ի կզակս քո. զի գիտասցես եթէ ի սին բանից քոց, զոր յաճախեցեր առաջի իմ ասել՝ վաղվաղակի եղեն քեզ արդիւնքն:

 6:5 Because you have multiplied all these insults - even to calling us animals - now I shall cast you into torments and I shall place a bridle on your cheeks, that you may know that for your futile words, which you repeated before me, you immediately received your deserts:

6:6 Եւ այս, ասէ, մեծ է ինձ, որ խաւսեցայս ընդ քեզ եւ մեծարանս եդի քեզ, եւ դու ետուր ինձ պատասխանի իբրեւ ընկերի:

 6:6 This,” he said, “was a great courtesy on my part in speaking with you and honoring you, yet you replied to me as an equal:

6:7 Եւ ետ կապել զնա ձեռս յետս, եւ արկանել գայլ ի բերան նորա. եւ ետ կախել շառաշեղս աղի ի վերայ ողին նորա, եւ տալ գելոցս կրծից նորա:

 6:7 So, he had his hands bound behind him, and a muzzle put in his mouth; and he had a block of salt hung on his back and a noose placed round his chest:

6:8 եւ արկանել առասանս ի կապս կրծից գելարանացն, կապել եւ համբառնալ ի բարձրաւանդակ տանիս ապարանից որմոյն մենքենայիւք:

 6:8 and cords put round and tightened on him; and he had him bound and raised up by machines to the highest part of the palace wall:

6:9 Եւ կայր պրկեալ կապեալ այնպէս զաւուրս եաւթն:

 6:9 And he remained thus, tightly bound, for seven days:

6:10 Եւ յետ եաւթն աւուրն ետ հրաման, եւ լուծին զնա ի չարաչար եւ ի դառն կապանացն, եւ ածին կացուցին առաջի նորա:

 6:10 And after the seventh day he commanded and they released him from this torture and binding, and they brought him before the king:

6:11 Սկսաւ հարցանել ցնա, թէ «Զիա՞րդ կարացեր ժուժալ, տոկալ, տեւել, մնալ եւ հասանել մինչեւ ցայսաւր:

 6:11 He began to question him. “How could you suffer, resist, endure, and last until today:

6:12 Եւ կամ առե՞ր զչափ, թէ արդարեւ իբրեւ զէշ եւ իբրեւ զջորի այնպէս ըստանձնեալ բեռինս պահեցեր եւ ետեղակալ կացեր դու բեռամբն հանդերձ:

 6:12 Did you perceive that truly like a donkey or mule’ you took on and carried such a great load and were stationary under your burden:

6:13 Վասն զի իշխեցեր դու թշնամանել զդիսն թէ անշարժ են՝ վասն այսորիկ հատուցին քեզ զայսպիսի պատուհաս:

 6:13 Because you dared to insult the gods by saying they are immobile; therefore, they have repaid you with such punishment:

6:14 Իսկ արդ՝ եթէ ոչ առցես դու յանձն պաշտաւն տանել դիցն, եւ յաճախեսցես դու ի նոյնպիսի թշնամանս աստուածոցն՝ եւ այլ եւս չարք չարագոյն անցք անցանիցեն ընդ քեզ:

 6:14 So now, if you will not agree to worship the gods, and if you repeat ’such insults to the deities, then still worse and crueler sufferings will come upon you:

6:15 Գրիգորիոս ասէ. «Վասն դիցն թէ ասես, զոր կոչես դու աստուածս՝ ստոյգ իսկ են հաստուածք. վասն զի հաստեալք են ի մարդկանէ, եւ եղեալք պատկերք ի ձեռաց ճարտարի:

 6:15 Gregory replied: “Concerning the gods that you mention, whom you call deities, they truly are fabricated, because they have been made by men and set up as images by the hands of an artisan:

6:16 ոմն փայտեայք են եւ ոմն քարեայք. ոմն են պղնձիք եւ ոմն են արծաթիք եւ ոմն ոսկիք. ոչ խաւսեալ նոցա երբեք եւ ոչ իմացեալ եւ ոչ զմտաւ ինչ ածեալ, ոչ վասն քո եւ ոչ վասն իմ:

 6:16 Some are of wood and some of stone, some are of bronze and some of silver and some of gold. They have never spoken nor thought nor made any decision - neither for you nor for me:

6:17 Եւ դու ինքնին իսկ քեզէն վկայես ինձ, թէ ոչ երբեք ասացեալ է նոցա ցքեզ զայդ վասն իմոյ տանջելոյս ի քէն. եւ կամ բնաւ արդեաւք իմացա՞ն քարինք անմռունչք զցաւս մարդկան:

 6:17 And you yourself bear me witness that they have never spoken to you about the torments you are inflicting on me. Have indeed mute stones ever comprehended the sufferings of men:

6:18 Այլ վասն որոյ կապեցեր ինձ աղ, զի կտտեցայց ես կապանաւք՝ յուսամ ես ի Տէրն իմ, որոյ են ստացուածք իւր երկինք եւ երկիր, եւ յՈրդին համագործ եւ ի Հոգին բարեխաւս:

 6:18 But as for your hanging salt on me in order to torment me with bonds, I hope in my Lord, whose creation are heaven and earth, and in the co-worker the Son, and in the Spirit, the intercessor:

6:19 զի համեմեսցեն զանհամութիւնս իմ ստուգութեամբ աղիւն ճշմարտութեան որ ոչ անցանէ:

 6:19 that they may season my immortality with the real salt of the truth that passes not away:

6:20 Եւ ինձ տացէ զամենահեշտ լուծն խոնարհութեան թեթեւութեան պարգեւացն, որ ոչ անցանէ յաւիտեանս յաւիտենից. որ բարձրացուցանէ զխոնարհս իւրով մարդասիրութեամբն յայն յանսպառ եւ յանվախճան հատուցմունսն:

 6:20 And I hope that he may give me the very easy yoke [cf. Matt. 11.30] of the gifts of humility and calm, which passes not away for ever and ever. He raises the humble [cf. Lk. 1.52] by his benevolence to that inexhaustible and unending recompense:

6:21 յանկէտ եւ յանժամանակ, յանթիւ յաւուրն ընտրութեան դարին մտելոյ եաւթներորդին, իբրեւ հանգուցանէ զամենայն վաստակաւորս իւր եւ պարգեւեսցէ իւրով մեծութեամբն:

 6:21 to the infinite, timeless, and unending day of election, in the seventh age to come when he will give rest to all his laborers and reward them in his majesty:

6:22 Իսկ որ պաշտեն զկուռս քարեղէնս՝ ասէ մարգարէն վասն նոցա, թէ Իջցեն որպէս զվէմս ի ջուրս բազումս:

 6:22 But of those who worship stone idols, the prophet says: ’They will go down like stones in many waters’:

6:23 Իսկ որ զփայտակերտ քանդակեալսն պաշտեն՝ այսպէս ասէ վասն նոցա, թէ Հուր վառեցաւ ի վերայ ամենայն փայտի ագարակի, եւ այրեսցէ զմեղաւորս, եւ մի՛ շիջցի:

 6:23 And of those who worship wooden sculptures he speaks thus: ’Fire burned over all the wooden field, and it will consume sinners, and will not be extinguished’:

6:24 Իսկ որ պաշտեն զարծաթեղէնս եւ զոսկեղէնս՝ այսպէս ասէ. Արծաթ նոցա եւ ոսկի նոցա մի՛ կարասցէ փրկել զնոսա յաւուր բարկութեան Տեառն:

 6:24 As for those who worship images of silver and gold, he speaks thus: ’Their silver and their gold will not be able to save them in the day of the Lord’s anger’:

6:25 որ կարողն է կախել նոցա բեռինս ծանրութեան եւ ամենայն դիմադարձաց եւ մեղաւորաց, որ իբրեւ զքեզդ իցեն ամբարիշտք:

 6:25 He is able to impose on them heavy loads [cf. Lk. 11.46] and also on all resisters and sinners who may be impious like you:
