 14:333 For these six saints martyred there in the desert, Denshapuh and the chief-magus and Jnikan the maypet selected guards from their entourages and ordered them to watch over the bodies of the saints in that very spot for ten days or more until the royal army should have moved on. To prevent, they said, any infidels from coming and removing their bones, and distributing them throughout the whole land—at which people would be even more encouraged to go astray after the sect of the Nazarenes:

14:334 Իսկ խուժիկն, զոր յառաջագոյն ասացաք, զինու հանդերձ մնայր անդէն ընդ պահապանսն որպէս զմի ի նոցանէ, այր լի իմաստութեամբ եւ կատարեալ աստուածային գիտութեամբ, սպասէր եւ դէտակն ունէր, եթէ որո՛վ աւրինակաւ հնարս գտցէ զոսկերս սրբոցն գողանալ ի նոցանէ:

 14:334 But the man from Khuzhastan whom we mentioned above remained there with the guards as one of them. He was a man full of wisdom and perfect in divine knowledge. He was waiting on the lookout for some way in which he could steal the bones from them:

14:335 Եւ իբրեւ աւուրք երեք անցին ի վերայ, արհաւիրք մեծ անկանէին ի վերայ ամենեցուն, եւ իբրեւ թմբրեալք եւ կիսամեռք անյարիրք անկեալ դնէին, զերիս աւուրսն:

 14:335 Three days passed during which great terror fell on them all; like numbed and half-dead men, they lay unable to rise:

14:336 Իսկ ի չորրորդում աւուրն երկուք ի պահապանացն չարաչար լլկեցան ի դիւէ:

 14:336 Then on the fourth day two of the guards were cruelly afflicted by a demon:

14:337 Դարձեալ հասարակ գիշերաւ չափ՝ ձայնք ահեղք հնչէին, եւ թնդիւնք որոտաձայնք ի ներքուստ՝ որպէս զդղրդումն գետնաշարժի. երկիրն դողայր ի ներքոյ նոցա, եւ շողիւնք սուսերաց փայլատակունս արձակէին շուրջ զնոքաւք:

 14:337 For the whole night awful voices cried out and thunderous crashings were heard from below like the rumbling of an earthquake. The ground shuddered beneath them, and flashing swords cast lightning around them:

14:338 Եւ զամենեսեան զդիակունսն կանգնեալ տեսանէին, եւ զնոյն բանս ատենին ահագինս բարբառէին ի լսելիս նոցա. մինչեւ խուճապել նոցա ընդ միմեանս, դեռ եւս զիրեարս սատակէին:

 14:338 They saw all the dead bodies rise up and echo awesomely in their ears the very words of the tribunal, so that they were mutually terrified and even began to kill one another:

14:339 Եւ այսպէս տագնապեալք եւ ցնորեալք, մինչեւ այր զընկերի փախուստ չգիտէր ընդ որ երթայր:

 14:339 They were so distraught and crazed that one did not know where the other had fled:

14:340 Եւ եկեալ պատմէին մեծաւ զարմացմամբ զամենայն անցս չարչարանացն, զոր կրեցին:

 14:340 In a great turmoil they went and told of all the torments they had endured:

14:341 Ի խորհուրդ մտին նախարարքն երեքեան, եւ սկսան զարմանալով ասել ցմիմեանս. «Զի՞նչ գործեսցուք, զի՞նչ արասցուք վասն անքնին աղանդոյն քրիստոնէից. քանզի մինչդեռ կենդանի են, զարմանալի են կեանք նոցա, ընչատեացք են իբրեւ զանկարաւտս, սրբասէրք են իբրեւ զանմարմինս, անաչառք են իբրեւ զարդարադատս, աներկիւղք են իբրեւ զանմահս:

 14:341 The three nobles took council and in astonishment began to say to one another: “What are we to do? How shall we deal with the inexplicable sect of the Christians? For while they are alive, their lives are wonderful; they scorn possessions as if they had no need of them, they are pure as if disembodied, they are impartial like equitable judges, they are fearless like immortals:

14:342 Եթէ զայս ամենայն ասեմք իբրեւ զտգիտաց եւ իբրեւ զյանդգնելոց, իսկ զայն զի՞ առնիցեմք, զի ցաւոտք ամենայն ի կարաւանի աստ նոքաւք առողջանան:

 14:342 Even if we say all that of them as ignorant or brash men, still what are we to do, since all the sick in the army have been cured by them:

14:343 Եւ կամ որ մեծս է քան զայդ ամենայն, ո՞յր ուրուք դի կանգնեալ երեւեցաւ ի կենդանեաց, կամ բարբառ բանից ոք լուաւ ի նմանէ:

 14:343 And what is more significant than all this—whatever man’s corpse ever stood up and appeared alive, or whoever heard spoken words from it:

14:344 Զի սուտ չեն մեր սպասաւորքն. մեր մեզէն իսկ հասեալ է ի վերայ ստուգութեան սոցա:

 14:344 For our servants are not liars; we have been assured of their veracity ourselves:

14:345 Եւ եթէ կամեցեալ էր սոցա մարմնաւոր ինչ ագահութիւն ի ներքս խառնել, սակաւ մի ակնարկէին քրիստոնէից ի կարաւանիս, զկշիռ իւրաքանչիւր մարմնոց նոցա ոսկի առնուին:

 14:345 And if they had wished to inject any personal avarice, they would have made some hints to the Christians in the army and would have received the weight of each body in gold:

14:346 Դարձեալ եւ արքդ, որ ի դիւէ չարչարեցան, զի յայլ ժամս ցաւոտք չէին՝ մեք գիտեմք. յայտ է եթէ այսաւր նշան մեծ երեւեցաւ:

 14:346 Furthermore, the men who were tormented by a demon we know were not ill at any other time. It is clear that a great miracle has occurred today:

14:347 Եթէ լուռ լինիմք, այսպէս մեզ եւ անձանց մերոց կասկած իսկ է. եւ եթէ տանիմք զդոսա առաջի թագաւորին, լսելով նորա ի դոցանէ զայդ ամենայն մեծամեծ սքանչելիս, գուցէ եւ աւրինացս մերոց քակտումն ինչ հասանիցէ:

 14:347 If we keep silent there will be suspicion on us and our persons. But if we bring them before the king, when he hears about all these tremendous wonders from them there may occur some ruin for our religion:

14:348 Ետ պատասխանի մոգպետն եւ ասէ ցնոսա. «Ո՞չ զիս ոստիկան արարին ի վերայ ձեր երկոցունցդ. զի՞ այդչափ նեղեալ տագնապիք յանձինս ձեր. դուք զգործն ձեր կատարեցէք, եւ զհրամանն արքունի ի գլուխ տարայք:

 14:348 The chief-magus responded, saying to them: “Did they not make me ostikan over the two of you? Why are you so troubled and distressed in your souls? You fulfill your duty and carry out the royal order:

14:349 Արդ եթէ համբաւդ այդ յայտնեսցի, եւ հարցափորձ ինչ լինիցին առաջի արքային, այդ խնդիր մեր մոգաց է. դուք անհոգ լերուք, եւ մի՛ ինչ ածէք զմտաւ:

 14:349 Now if this report becomes known and there is an interrogation before the king, that investigation will be for us magi. Do not worry; do not even think about it:

14:350 Եւ եթէ զարհուրեցայք ինչ յոգիս ձեր, վաղագոյն առաւաւտուցն ի Դարիթիւ եկայք. զի վաղիւ անդ Մովպետան մովպետ ռատ յազէ, եւ նոյն հաճեալ հաւանեցուսցէ զմիտս ձեր:

 14:350 If you are at all frightened in your souls, come to the temple very early in the morning. For tomorrow the high Movpetan movpet will offer sacrifice there, and he will satisfy and convince your minds:
