36:0 Եւ մինչդեռ այս ամենայն կատարէր այսպէս յաջողութեամբն Աստուծոյ ըստ կամաց նոցա` յանկարծակի դեսպան հասանէր առ երանելի զաւրավարն Հայոց Վարդան եւ առ ամենայն գունդն որ ընդ նմա էին. գոյժ տրտմութեան եւ համբաւ չարաչար տայր նոցա, ասելով, թէ:	36:0 With God’s aid, as all of this was occurring as they wanted, suddenly an emissary reached the venerable general of Armenia, Vardan, and the entire brigade with him. He gave them gloomy and wicked news:
36:1 Ստեաց անաւրէնն Վասակ ուխտին Աստուծոյ եւ նենգեալ դրժեաց Աւետարանին երդմանն, եւ ի յետս կացեալ ապստամբեաց ի միաբանութենէ ճշմարտութեանն. նոյնպէս եւ մնացեալքն անդէն առ նմա աւագանին Հայոց յետս կացեալ` ընդ նմա ապստամբեցին, եւ դարձուցեալ զերեսս իւրեանց ի ճանապարհէն արդարութեան` մոլորեցան զկնի սատանայի. դեսպան արձակեցին ի Պարսս եւ նամակաւք ուխտադրեցին ընդ նոսա. եւ զբերդեան ամրոցացն Հայոց ի բաց կալան, եւ զիւրեանցն բերդակալս արարեալ` զգուշացուցին:	36:1 The impious Vasak has betrayed the covenant of God and duplicitously broken the oath on the Gospel. He has rebelled from the alliance of truth. The Armenian nobles who are with him have also rebelled and, turning their faces from the path of justice, they have erred after Satan. They sent an emissary to Iran and made vows to them in letters. They took the fortified strongholds of Armenia, placed their fortress-commanders in them and told them to keep watch:
36:2 Եւ զորդիս տոհմին Մամիկոնէից եւ Կամսարականաց եւ զայլոց տանուտերացն ժողովեալ յիւրաքանչիւր դայեկաց` յամուրս բերդից իշխանութեանն Սիւնեաց ետ անցուցանել, եւ հրամայեաց պահել զամուրսն զգուշութեամբ. եւ ապա նենգաւորն Վասակ տայ տանել զտղայսն առ թագաւորն Պարսից:	36:2 Vasak had the children of the Mamikonean tohm, of the Kamsarakans, and of other tanuters gathered from each of (their) dayeaks and taken to secure fortresses in the principality of Siwnik’, which he ordered carefully held. Furthermore, the treacherous Vasak had the boys sent to the Iranian king:
36:3 Եւ որք խոտորեցան զկնի սատանայի ընդ ուխտանենգին Վասակայ` են այսոքիկ. իշխանն Բագրատունեաց` Տիրոց, իշխանն Խորխոռունեաց` Գադիշոյ, իշխանն Ապահունեաց` Մանէճ, իշխանն Վահեւունեաց` Գիւտ, իշխանն Պալունեաց` Վարազշապուհն, իշխանն Աբեղենից` Արտէն, իշխանն Ուրծայ` Ներսէհ, եւ այլք յոստանկաց եւ սեպուհք ոմանք յիւրաքանչիւր տոհմէ:	36:3 The following people abandoned themselves to Satan with the oath-breaking Vasak: the prince of the Bagratunik’, Tiroc’, the prince of Xorxorhunik’, Gadishoy, the prince of Apahunik’, Manech, the prince of Vahewunik’, Giwt, the prince of Palunik’, Varazshapuh, the prince of Abeleank’, Arten, the prince of Urc, Nerseh, and other nobles and some sepuhs from every tohm:
36:4 Եւ լուեալ զայս ամենայն գործ աղէտից, զոր էր գործեալ նենգաւոր իշխանն Սիւնեաց Վասակ եւ այլ նախարարացն որ ընդ նմա, երանելւոյ սպարապետին Հայոց տեառն Մամիկոնէից Վարդանայ, հանդերձ նախարարաւքն եւ զաւրուն որ ընդ նմայն էին` չ տրտմել ոչ կարէին. եւ զանձինս եւ զգերեալ տղայսն ի պահպանութիւն ամենահնար աջոյն յանձն արարեալ նուիրէին, ասելով այս պէս:	36:4 Hearing about all of these disastrous deeds wrought by the duplicitous prince of Siwnik’, Vasak, and by the other naxarars with him, the venerable sparapet of Armenia, Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, and the troops with him could not but be dismayed. They vowed to do everything possible to preserve themselves and their captive boys, saying:
36:5 Ահա առեալ հեծանոց ի ձեռն Փրկիչն ամենեցուն Քրիստոս` սրբել զկալ իւր եւ ընտրել զցորենահատն, ժողովել յերկնից ի շտեմարանսն, եւ զյարդն մատնել անշէջ բոցոյն կիզուց անխնայ:	36:5 Lo, the Savior of all, Christ, has taken the hay rake in hand and is winnowing and grading the grain placing it in the heavenly grainary, but throwing the straw to the merciless burning of inextinguishable fires:
36:6 Եւ եղիցուք մեք սրբեալք ցորենահատ, եւ ցանկութեամբ սպասեսցուք աւուր նահատակութեան մերոյ, յորում թէ արժանի եղեալ դիպեսցուք մասին սրբոցն` վախճան մեր բարի զմեզ պսակէ, եւ զտղայս պահպանեալ սնուցանէ եւ ի տեղիս իւրաքանչիւր եւ յիշխանութիւն ածեալ հասուցանէ, եւ զարբանեակսն սատանայի բազում զղջմամբք ամաչեցուցեալ նշաւակէ աստ եւ ի հանդերձելումն:	36:6 Let us be like the cleaned grain, and let us await the day of our martyrdom with desire. Should we be worthy of attaining the fate of the saints, our good deaths will crown us. (Should we live), our boys will be preserved and grow up each in his own place and attain princehood, while the satellites of Satan with great remorse will be shamed and ridiculed in this world and in the next:
36:7 Եւ ասացեալ զայս երանելւոյն` չուեցին միաբան ամենեքեան յաշխարհէն Աղուանից յերկիրն Հայոց ի գաւառն Այրարատոյ. եւ անդ զաւուրս դառնաշունչ աւդոյ ձմերայնւոյն ըստ սովորութեան իւրեանց դադարեալք` փութային առ հասարակ անձկով զաւուրս գարնանային ամսոյն տեսանել եւ յաւր իւրեանց նահատակութեան պսակին հասանել:	36:7 After the blessed people had said this, they all went together to the land of Aghbania (Aghuania) from the district of Ayrarat in the country of Armenia. There, in accordance with their custom, they remained and passed the bitterly cold days of winter, all of them anxiously waiting for springtime and the day when they would attain the crown of martyrdom:
36:8 Քանզի ոչ եւս ինչ այլ բնաւ ածէր զմտաւ ոք զյաղթութիւն եւ կամ զպարտումն, այլ ցանկացեալք, որպէս ծարաւիք, բաժակին փրկութեան` իւրեանց կատարմանն պատահել եւ ընդունել մնային:	36:8 For no one thought of victory or defeat, rather, like a thirsty person they longed for the cup of their final salvation and wanted to drink:
36:9 Իսկ նենգաւոր իշխանն Սիւնեաց Վասակ ոչ երբէք դադարէր գրել նամականի առ իշխանս եւ շինականս եւ քահանայս աշխարհիս Հայոց. ցուցանէր իմն բերեալս ի դրանէ ուխտս սուտս ի վկայութիւնս ընդունայնս, թէ «Արքայից արքայ զքրիստոնէութիւն շնորհեաց աշխարհի, եւ զվնաս կոտորածի մոգուցն չ խնդրէ. եւ զապստամբութենէն ասէ, թէ «բնաւ եւ յիշեմ իսկ ոչ, միայն թէ ի բաց դառնայք ի խրատուէ եւ ի բանից Վարդանայ, եւ մի՛ կորնչիք ընդ դմա:	36:9 Now Vasak, the treacherous prince of Siwnik’, did not stop writing letters to the princes, shinakans, and priests of the land of Armenia. He (tried to) show that the oaths and testimonies brought from court were false and futile, saying: “The king of kings has sanctioned Christianity for (this) land, and does not seek a harmful destruction of the mages.” About the rebellion, he note: “I shall completely forget about (recriminations), only let people turn from the counsel and word of Vardan, and not be lost with him:
36:10 Եւ զինքենէ գրէ ուխտանենգն Վասակ, թէ «ես լինիմ միջնորդ այսմ ամենայնի, եւ անվնաս պահեմ զաշխարհս Հայոց:	36:10 Regarding himself, the oath-breaking Vasak wrote: “I will be the intermediary in all of this and keep the land of Armenia unharmed:
36:11 Եւ տուեալ ի ձեռս սուտ քահանայից զգրեալսն` նենգաւորին Վասակայ, որոց անուանքն են չ քահանայիցն այս. Զանգակ մի ոմն, Սահակ Ձայնող, եւ միւս ոմն Պետրոս Երկաթի:	36:11 Then the duplicitous Vasak entrusted the correspondence to some false priests—non-priests—having the following names: a certain Zangak, Sahak Jaynogh, and another one, a certain Petros Erkat’i:
36:12 Եւ էին Սահակն եւ Պետրոսն ի գաւառէն Սիւնեաց. յորոց ձեռս տայր զաղտ յերանելի սպարապետէն Վարդանայ նենգաւորն Վասակ զգրեալսն շրջեցուցանել ընդ աշխարհս Հայոց. զոր լուեալ թուլացելոցն ի հաւատս եւ անյուսիցն, հաւատացեալ բանից նենգաւորին` կորնչէին:	36:12 Sahak and Petros were from the district of Siwnik’. The treacherous Vasak entrusted the correspondence about the venerable sparapet Vardan to these men and had them circulate it throughout the land of Armenia. Those people who were weakening in the faith and were without hope, listened to the words of the treacherous man, and believed them:
36:13 Իսկ պինդքն եւ մարտիրոսութեան տենչողքն իբրեւ լսէին զայս ամենայն բանս ցնորից` եւս առաւել պնդեալք զաւրանային, եւ աւուր աւետաբեր փրկութեան իւրեանց սպասէին յուսով:	36:13 But when the crazed words were heard by those who held firm, and those who longed for martyrdom, they became strengthened, and even more convinced, and they hopefully awaited the day which would bring them the good news of their salvation:
