81:0 Եւ զհետ գնացիցն Հազարաւուխտոյ ի Վիրս` մնայր Շապուհ յՈքաղս, եւ ջանայր կատարել զհրամանն Հազարաւուխտոյ, եւ որսայր զՄամիկոնեանն Վահան` գտանել զնա ի զեղծի եւ սպանանել. եւ ոչ ինչ լինէր ձեռնհաս. քանզի ամրութիւն վերնոյն շուրջ զնովաւ պարսպեալ պահէր զնա:

 81:0 After Hazarawuxt had departed for Iberia (Georgia), Shapuh remained at Ok’al and tried to implement Hazarawuxt’s order: to hunt for Vahan Mamikonean, come upon him unawares, and kill him. But he was able to accomplish nothing, since security from On High surrounded and preserved (Vahan:

81:1 Բայց Մամիկոնեանն Վահան զամենայն աւր ոչ տայր դուլ առնուլ զաւրաւք իւրովք Պարսկաց ի ղակշին. այլ զցայգ ամենայն նետաձիգ լինելով ի ներքս` էր զոր ինքեանց Հայոց խոցոտեալ նետիւ սպանանէին, եւ էր զոր ինքեանք Պարսիկքն զինքեանս ի վերայ միմեանց կուտակելով հեղձամաղձուկս առնէին:

 81:1 Indeed, Vahan Mamikonean with his troops ceaselessly took the Iranians in (their) encampment, each day. Every morning they shot arrows from below (the encampment) and there were those killed by the arrows of the Armenians themselves, and those Iranians killed when other Iranians, becoming a mob, suffocated them:

81:2 Եւ երթեալ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեանն հանդերձ արամբքն որ ընդ նմա էին` բանակէր ի գիւղ մի մերձ, որ էր ընդ իշխանութեամբն Մամիկոնէից, որում անուն էր Ծաղիկ. կամեցեալ անցանել ի կողմն սահմանակցութեանն Հաշտենից, յաղագս գտանելոյ ի նոցանէ աւգնութիւն:

 81:2 Then Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, and the men who were with him went to encamp in a nearby village under the authority of the Mamikoneans, called Caghik. They wanted to cross to the border area of Hashteank’ (district), to get help from the people there:

81:3 Ազդ եղեւ Շապհոյ զաւրավարին Պարսից, եթէ ահաւասիկ Մամիկոնեանն Վահան բանակեալ է ի գիւղ մի, եւ արք են ընդ նմա թուով յոյժ սակաւք:

 81:3 The Iranian general, Shapuh, was informed that lo, Vahan Mamikonean is encamped in a village and there are extremely few men with him:

81:4 Եւ կանխեալ վաղագոյն ընդ առաւաւտն զաւրագլուխն Պարսից Շապուհ, ամենայն բազմութեամբն որ ընդ նմա` յանկարծակի ի վերայ ելանէր գնդին Հայոց:

 81:4 So before dawn the next day Shapuh, the Iranian military commander, taking all the multitude (of troops) with him suddenly went against the Armenian brigade:

81:5 Եւ գունդն Հայոց իբրեւ հանապազազգոյշս, վասն ցանգ անծոյլս յաւրինելոյ զնոսա զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենի, լինելով պատրաստք` գնային ի տեղւոյն անվնասք. սակայն գունդք զաւրացն Պարսից ոչ ինչ փոյթ առնէին այլոցն, զկնի զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ անցանէին. քանզի ասէին. «Թէ նմա միայն գտանեմք հնարս` ամենայն իրք մեր վճարեալ են եւ յանգ:

 81:5 But the Armenian brigade was prepared (they were always prepared because Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, taught them to be alert) and they went elsewhere, unharmed. Nonetheless, brigades of Iranian troops, not taking note of the others, went after Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean. For they note: “If only we find some way of dealing with him, all our business will be finished and done:

81:6 Եւ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան երթայր ընդ կողմն արեւելից ծովուն Կարնոյ, եւ գունդք զաւրաւորացն Պարսից զկնի նորա երթային անհասութեամբ:

 81:6 Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, went eastward to the area of the sea (lake) of Karin, while the brigades of Iranian warriors went after them unable to catch up:

81:7 Եւ Մուշեղ ի տոհմէն Մամիկոնէից եւ Ներսեհ Կամսարական տէրն Շիրակայ, ընդ կողմանն հիւսիսոյ ծովուն, վրիպեալք առ փոյթ ժամուն ի զաւրավարէն Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնենէ, սակաւ արամբք երթային խռովեալք. եւ մերձեալք ի գիւղ մի Կարնոյ, որում անուն էր Արծաթի, եւ հասեալք ի հեղեղատ մի որ մերձ էր ի գիւղ մի, եւ կամեցեալք յեզեր հեղեղատին առ վայր մի հանգչել, ուր եւ հնձողքն արտորայոցն շուրջ զտեղաւքն գործէին:

 81:7 Now Mushegh of the Mamikonean tohm and Nerseh Kamsarakan, lord of Shirak, were travelling north of the lake, having missed (meeting) Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, at the appointed hour. They were with a few men, and were upset. They approached a village of Karin named Arcat’i, and reached a torrent which was near a village, and they wanted to rest by the bank of the torrent for a while, at a place where reapers of the outer fields (which lay around the villages) were working:

81:8 Եւ իբրեւ գիտացին Պարսիկքն, թէ ոչ եղեն նոցա հասու` կամեցան մշակացն տեղեացն վնասել, թէ «Ընդէ՞ր բնաւ ծառայից արքայից արքայի տայք շրջել յաշխարհի ձերում:

 81:8 Subsequently when the Iranians learned that they were unable to catch them, they wanted to harm the mshaks of the area. They note: “Why do you permit all servants of the king of kings to travel through your land:

81:9 Եւ տեսեալ Խուրսայ, որ էր ի գաւառէն Արշամունեաց, ի գեղջէն Շիրմաց, դայեակորդի տեառնն Շիրակայ Կամսարականին, զոմն ի Պարսից զաւրացն, զի կամէր սպանանել զայր մի կարնացի ի մշակացն. եւ մշակն շուրջ գալով զբարդիւ միով` խուսափէր ի սպանողէն. եւ տեսեալ զայն Խուրսայ դայեակորդւոյն Կամսարականին Ներսեհի, զայրացեալ ընդ սեպհին Մամիկոնէից Մուշեղի եւ ընդ Կամսարականին Ներսեհի` ասէ աներկիւղապէս:

 81:9 Xurs (who was from Shirmac’ village in Arshamunik’ district), dayeakordi of the Kamsarakan lord of Shirak, saw that one of the Iranian soldiers wanted to kill one of the Karnec’i mshaks, and that the mshak had gone behind a haystack to evade his (would-be) killer. When Nerseh Kamsarakan’s dayeakordi saw this he got angry at the Mamikonean sepuh, Mushegh, and at Nerseh Kamsarakan, saying courageously:

81:10 Ո՞չ ապաքէն մահ այլ աշխարհաց առնն, թէ մեռանի ի Պարսկէն` ի մէնջ պահանջէ վրէժխնդիրն Աստուած:

 81:10 Truly, would not the avenging God demand (an explanation) from us for the man from different lands who dies because of an Iranian:

81:11 Եւ յարձակեալ նիզակաւ Խուրսն ի վերայ Պարսկին` անդէն ի տեղւոջն սատակէր, եւ զերծուցեալ ապրեցուցանէր զկարնացին ի սպանողէն:

 81:11 So Xurs attacked the Iranian with his lance and killed him on the spot, and the Karnec’i escaped his slayer:

81:12 Եւ գրգռեալք ընդ բանսն Խուրսայ սեպուհն Մամիկոնէից Մուշեղ եւ Կամսարականն տէրն Շիրակայ Ներսեհ, եւ ընդ գործն հայեցեալ ընդ Խուրսայ, զոր գործեաց քաջաբար, տեսեալ եւ զհետամուտսն զկնի նոցա, թէ չեն կարի բազումք` յարձակեցան ի վերայ Պարսկացն սակաւ արամբք որ ընդ նոսա էին, եւ զաւրացեալ աւգնականութեամբն Աստուծոյ` բազում արեանց ճապաղիս ի տեղւոջն հանէին, եւ զայլսն փախստականս արարեալ` դարձուցանէին ընդ կրունկն ամաւթով:

 81:12 Stirred by Xurs’ words and the deed he had bravely done, the sepuh of the Mamikoneans, Mushegh and the lord of Shirak, Nerseh, looked and saw that there were not too many people pursuing them. They fell upon the Iranians with only the few men who were with them, and, strengthened by God’s aid, they caused many torrents of blood to flow, while the others were shamefully put to flight:

81:13 Եւ եղեւ թիւ մեռելոց ի տեղւոջն եաւթանասուն եւ երկուց արանց:

 81:13 Seven hundred and two men died there:

81:14 Եւ լուեալ զայսպիսի յաջողութեան գործ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի` ետ փառս Աստուծոյ, որ եւ առանց նորա կորացուցեալ խորտակէր Աստուած զզաւրութիւն թշնամւոյն:

 81:14 When Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, heard of such successful work he glorified God that without his participation, God bent and broke the enemy’s power:

81:15 Եւ ինքն գնայր ի սահմանս Հաշտենից, ըստ յառաջադրեալ խորհրդոյն իւրոյ, եւ հասեալ բանակէր ի գաւառին Արշամունեաց, ի գիւղն որ կոչի Երէզ. կամեցեալ հանգչել աւուրս երկուս:

 81:15 And he went to the border of Hashteank’ in accordance with his previous plan. Reaching the place, he encamped at the village called Erez in the district of Arshamunik’, wishing to rest for two days:
