6:126 Իսկ զգունդն զԱպարհացի, եւ զԿատշացն եւ զՀոնաց եւ զԳեղաց, եւ զայլս եւս ամենայն զընտիր ընտիր մարդիկ զաւրուն ի մի վայր ժողովէր, եւ հրաման պատուիրանի տայր ընդ աջմէ կողմանէ իւրոյ գնդին պատրաստ լինել ընդդէմ Հայոց զաւրավարին:

 6:126 The contingents of the Aparhatsik, the Katishk, the Huns and the Geḷk, and all the rest of the army’s elite he assembled in once place, and commanded the force on his right-hand side to be ready to oppose the Armenian general:

6:127 Իսկ արին Վարդան յառաջ մատուցեալ եւ զաւագանին հարցանէր, եւ միաբան ամենեցուն խրատու զզաւրագլուխսն կարգէր:

 6:127 Then the brave Vardan advanced, questioned the nobles, and with their unanimous advice disposed his generals:

6:128 Զգունդն առաջին տայր ի ձեռն իշխանին Արծրունեաց, եւ նիզակակից նմա զմեծ իշխանն Մոկաց. եւ զայլն ամենայն նախարարեան համհարզս երկոցունց, եւ զամենայն բազմութիւն գնդին թեւս աստի եւ անտի կազմէր նոցա:

 6:128 The first division he entrusted to the prince of Artsrunik, with the great prince of Mokk in support. Many other nobles he appointed as adjutants to these two, and deployed the mass of the troops on the wings to either side:

6:129 Եւ զգունդն երկրորդ տայր ի ձեռն Խորենայ Խորխոռունւոյ, եւ նիզակակից նմա զԸնծայինն եւ զՆերսեհ Քաջբերունի:

 6:129 The second division he entrusted to Khoren Khorkhoruni, with Entsayin and Nerseh Kajberuni in support:

6:130 Եւ զգունդն երրորդ մատուցանէր ի ձեռն Թաթլոյ Վանանդացւոյ, եւ նիզակակից նմա հրամայէր զՏաճատ Գնթունի, եւ զբազումս ի քաջ արանց աստի եւ անտի ի թեւս նոցա:

 6:130 The third division he put under the command of Tatul Vanandatsi, and ordered Tachat Gntuni to support him with many brave warriors to both sides on their wings:

6:131 Յանձն իւր առնոյր զգունդն չորրորդ, եւ նիզակակից իւր զքաջն Արշաւիր եւ զհարազատ եղբայրն իւր զՀամազասպեան:

 6:131 He took upon himself the command of the fourth division, with the valiant Arshavir and his own blood brother Hamazaspean in support:

6:132 Կարգէր եւ կազմէր զճակատն յորդորելով ընդ ամենայն երեսս դաշտին դէմ յանդիման Արեաց գնդին, առ ափն Տղմուտ գետոյն:

 6:132 He deployed his battle line, spreading the troops across the whole surface of the plain opposite the Aryan army on the bank of the river Tḷmut:

6:133 Եւ իբրեւ այս այսպէս պատրաստեցան, երկոքեան կողմանքն լի սրտմտութեամբ եւ մեծաւ բարկութեամբ զայրանային, եւ գազանացեալ զաւրութեամբ յիրեարս յարձակէին եւ ամբոխ աղաղակին երկոցունց կողմանց՝ իբրեւ ի մէջ ամպոց շփոթելոց՝ ճայթմունս գործէր, եւ հնչումն ձայնից զքարանձաւս լերանցն շարժէր:

 6:133 When these preparations had been completed and both sides were filled with passion and enflamed with wrath, they rushed on each other with the force of wild animals. Their melee caused a roar like the thundering in turbulent clouds, and the echoing of their shouts made the caverns of the mountains shake:

6:134 Ի բազմութենէ սաղաւարտիցն եւ ի փայլիւն պատենազէն վառելոցն իբրեւ նշոյլք ճառագայթից արեգական հատանէին:

 6:134 From the multitude of helmets and shining armor of the soldiers light flashed like rays of the sun:

6:135 Նա եւ ի բազում շողալ սուսերացն եւ ի ճաւճել բազմախուռն նիզակացն իբրեւ յերկնուստ ահագին հրաձգութիւնք եռային:

 6:135 The glittering of the many swords and the waving of the massed lances were like fearful lightning from heaven:

6:136 Քանզի ո՞վ իսկ է բաւական ասել զմեծամեծ տագնապ ահաւոր ձայնիցն, ո՛րպէս կոփիւնք վահանաւորացն եւ ճայթմունք լարից աղեղանցն զլսելիս ամենեցուն առ հասարակ խլացուցանէին:

 6:136 For who is able to describe the tremendous commotion of the terrifying sounds or how the clashing of shields and the crack of bowstrings deafened everyone’s ears:

6:137 Անդ էր տեսանել շտապ մեծի տագնապին եւ զաղէտս անբաւ տարակուսանացն երկոցունց կողմանցն՝ առ ի յանդուգն յարձակմանէն զմիմեանս բախելով. քանզի թանձրամիտքն յիմարէին եւ վատասիրտքն լքանէին. քաջքն խիզախէին եւ նահատակքն գոչէին:

 6:137 There one could see the commotion of the great conflict and the anguish of the immense anxiety on both sides as they resolutely attacked each other. For the dull-witted became mad and the cowards deserted; the brave advanced fearlessly and the heroes roared:

6:138 Եւ խումբ արարեալ ամենայն բազմութեանն՝ զգետն ի մէջ փակէին, եւ զանգիտեալ գունդն Պարսից ի դժուարութենէ գետոյն՝ զտեղեաւն զեռալ սկսան:

 6:138 Forming a solid group, the whole host blocked the river. The Persian army, fearing the difficulty of crossing the river, began to stir in its place:

6:139 Իսկ գունդն Հայոց հասեալ անցանէին, ձի ի վերայ առեալ յարձակէին մեծաւ զաւրութեամբ. սաստկապէս բախեալք ընդ միմեանս, յերկոցունց կողմանց բազում վիրաւորք յերկիր անկեալ դիաթաւալ խաղային:

 6:139 But the Armenian army crossed over on horseback and attacked in great force. As the two sides collided with a crash, many wounded fell to the ground, rolling in the agony of death:

6:140 Յայնմ մեծ տագնապի ի վեր հայեցաւ քաջն Վարդան, եւ տեսանէր զընտիր ընտիր քաջ նահատակաց Պարսից զաւրուն, զի զձախակողմն շարժեցին զՀայոց գնդին. մեծաւ ուժով յարձակէր ի տեղին, եւ զաջ թեւն Պարսից գնդին բեկեալ՝ արկանէր զգազանաւքն, եւ շրջան առեալ կոտորէր մինչեւ ի նոյն տեղի:

 6:140 In that great tumult the valiant Vardan looked up and saw that the elite of the bravest warriors of the Persian army had dislodged the left wing of the Armenian force. With great vigor he attacked the spot and broke the right wing of the Persian army, throwing it back on the elephants; surrounding them, he cut them down back to the same place:

6:141 Եւ այնպէս շտապ տագնապի ի վերայ հասուցանէր, մինչեւ գունդն Մատեան քակեալ բաժանեցան ի մեծ ամուր պատրաստութենէն, դեռ եւս քաջ քաջ ի փախուստ դառնային:

 6:141 Such confusion he brought upon them that the center broke and abandoned their fortified position, even the most valiant taking to flight:

6:142 Ապա դէտակն ի վեր ամբառնայր Մուշկան Նիսալաւուրտ, քակեալ զոմանս տեսանէր ի գնդէն Հայոց, եւ զկնի մնացեալ ի հովիտս լերանցն:

 6:142 Then Mushkan Nisalavurt lifted his eyes and saw that some of the Armenian troops had broken away from the main force and remained behind in the valleys of the mountains:

6:143 Վասն որոյ զաղաղակ բարձեալ՝ քաջալերէր շուրջ զիւրեաւ զզաւրս Արեաց, որք զտեղի առեալ կային ընդդէմ գնդին Վարդանայ:

 6:143 Therefore, raising a shout, he urged on the Aryan soldiers around him, who had halted opposite Vardan’s division:

6:144 Եւ անդէն ի տեղւոջն երկոքին կողմանքն զպարտութիւն խոստովանէին, եւ առ յոյժ թանձր անկեալ դիականցն իբրեւ զքարակոյտս դերբկաց երեւէին:

 6:144 At that spot the two sides both were prepared to acknowledge defeat, as the corpses had fallen so thickly as to resemble piles of rough stones:

6:145 Զայն իբրեւ ետես Մուշկան Նիսալաւուրտ, մնայր գազանացն Արտաշրի, որ ի վերայ նոցա նստէր ի բարձր դիտանոցին իբրեւ յամուր քաղաքի. եւ ի ձայն մեծ գալարափողոցն զիւր գունդսն ստիպէր, եւ յառաջամարտիկ զաւրաւքն զնա ի մէջ փակէր:

 6:145 When Mushkan Nisalavurt saw this, he waited for the elephants of Artashir, who was sitting on one of them in a high watchtower as if in a fortified city. At the sound of the great trumpets he urged on his troops and surrounded him (Vardan) with the troops of the front line:

6:146 Իսկ կորովին Վարդան իւրովք քաջ նիզակակցաւքն ոչ սակաւ նախճիրս ի տեղւոջն գործեաց, յորում տեղւոջ եւ ինքն իսկ արժանի եղեւ առնուլ զկատարեալ նահատակութիւնն:

 6:146 Now the stalwart Vardan with his valiant companions worked no little carnage in that very place where he himself became worthy to suffer perfect martyrdom:

6:147 Եւ յերկարել գործոյ պատերազմին՝ աւրն տարաժամէր, եւ մաւտ առ երեկս կարճատէր. բազմաց աւրահասք մահու հասանէին, մանաւանդ ի թանձրութենէ անկեալ դիականց մաւտ առ մաւտ խտացեալ իբրեւ զփայտահարս մայրաւորաց:

 6:147 As the battle continued, the day began to go down and night drew on. Many reached the point of death, especially as the bodies had fallen so thickly that they lay in dense piles like logs hewn in the forest:

6:148 Անդ էր տեսանել զբեկումն նիզակացն եւ զխորտակումն աղեղանց. վասն այնորիկ եւ ոչ կարէին կալ ճշմարտիւ ի վերայ սուրբ մարմնոյ երանելեացն. եւ սաստիկ խուճապ տագնապի էր կողմանցն երկոցունց անկելոց:

 6:148 There one could see so many broken lances and snapped bows that the holy bodies of the blessed ones could not be distinguished, and there was a frightful press of those who had fallen on both sides:

6:149 Եւ որք մնացեալքն էին՝ վատնեալք եւ ցրուեալք լինէին ի լեռնադաշտս ամուր ձորոցն. եւ յորժամ պատահէին միմեանց՝ դարձեալ միւսանգամ զմիմեանս սատակէին:

 6:149 The survivors had run off and scattered in the safe valleys of the plateau. Whenever they came across one another, they again fell to mutual slaughter:

6:150 Եւ մինչեւ ի մուտս արեգականն անդադար լինէր գործ դառնութեանն:

 6:150 This bitter work continued without respite until the setting of the sun:
