56:0 Յաղագս դառնալոյ Աշոտոյ արքայի ի հայրենիս իւր, եւ թագաւորելոյ Աշոտոյ սպարապետի, եւ պատերազմին սոցա, եւ խաղաղելոյ Յովհաննու կաթողիկոսի զնոսա:	56:0 The Return of King Ashot to His Fatherland, and the Coronation of Ashot Sparapet; The War between the Latter; The Success of Katholikos Yovhannes in Appeasing Them:
56:1 Արդ՝ իբրեւ զայս ամենայն լուեալ արքայորդին Աշոտ, մինչդեռ էր ի Հռովմայեցւոց տէրութեանն՝ ապա մեծաւ շնորհակալութեամբ եւ բարեխորհուրդ ծառայական խոստմամբք խնդրէ հրաժեշտ դառնալոյ անդրէն ի հայրենի տէրութիւնն ի Կայսերէ՝ յայտ արարեալ նմա թէ այց արար Տէր եւ յաջողեաց ի բարութիւն աշխարհին Հայոց:	56:1 Ashot, the son of king Smbat, heard of all the above matters while he was still in the domain of the Romans. Thereupon, with much gratitude and thoughtful promises of services, he asked for permission from the Emperor to return to his ancestral realm. He revealed to the latter that the Lord had come to Armenia, and had brought beneficence to that land:
56:2 Իսկ կայսր Կոստանդին ըստ ժամանակի լրութեան բարւոյն սիրալիր սրտիւ հաւանեալ խնդրոյն Աշոտոյ, ապա եւս յոգնապատիկ պատրաստէր նմա պարգեւս եւ պատիւս եւ բազում կարասիս եւ երեւելի զարդս եւ զէնս եւ նժոյգս ոսկեղէնս եւ ոսկէսանձս, եւ բազում եւս գանձիւք զնա փարթամացուցեալ, եւ բազում զօրավարս եւ զօրս Հռովմայեցիս ի ձեռս նորա գումարեալ՝ յուղարկէ յիւրական աշխարհս:	56:2 The Emperor Constantine, in view of the favorable conditions of the time, willingly gave his consent to the request of Ashot, and prepared for him many valuable gifts, great amounts of money, beautiful ornaments and weapons, gold-covered stallions with golden reins. In addition to these he bestowed on him many treasures, put in his command many Roman generals and forces, and sent him back to his land:
56:3 Որոյ չուեալ երթեալ անցեալ զբազում օթեւանօք, եւ եկեալ հասեալ յաշխարհ իւր՝ զբազումս նուաճեալ ի հնազանդութիւն ինքեան կացուցանէր. եւ ի բազմաց նորընծայ իմն հիւրամեծարութեան ակն կալեալ սպասէր:	56:3 Having passed through several stages, Ashot reached his land, where he subordinated many people under his sway, and like a newly arrived guest expected to receive from many others their respects:
56:4 Իսկ վասն զի մեծ դաստակերտն Կողբ դիմագրաւ ընդդէմ նորա գտանէին չարութեամբ՝ ոչ երբեք հաւանական միտս ի հնազանդութեան սակի ստացեալ, վասն այնորիկ իսկ ի գերութիւն Յունականացն զնոսա մատնէր:	56:4 However, as (the inhabitants of) the large dastakert Koghb hostilely opposed him, and he could in no way persuade them to consent to submit themselves to him, Ashot consequently let them be taken captive by the Greeks:
56:5 Եւ ապա Աշոտոյ սպարապետին Հայոց ի սմին իսկ յայսմ ժամու եղեւ իսկ եւ իսկ դառնալ յոստիկանէն Յուսփայ՝ եկեալ հասեալ մտեալ ի մայրաքաղաքն Դվին:	56:5 It was at this time, that Ashot, the sparapet of Armenia, immediately took leave of Yusuf and returned to the capital city of Dvin:
56:6 Եւ քանզի խորամանկ ոստիկանն խորհրդաբար ի մտի եդեալ՝ սուր հակառակութեան ի մէջ նոցա արկանել, այսպիսաբար նանրական մտօք թագ կապեալ սպարապետին Հայոց եւ սուսեր ընդ մէջ ածեալ՝ առաքէ յաշխարհ իւր. որ գրեթէ գիրկ ընդ խառն ի դիմի միմեանց հարան՝ ինքն եւ հոմանուն իւր արքայորդին:	56:6 But as the cunning ostikan had secretly intended to arouse sharp animosity between them, with such insidious snares in mind he crowned the sparapet of Armenia as king, and gird up his loins with a sword, whereafter he sent him to his land. The latter and his name-sake, that is, the son of king Smbat, almost came to hostilities:
56:7 Իսկ իբրեւ եկն եւ ետես զաշխարհս առ հասարակ սպառեալ սատակմամբ եւ զայլս վաճառակուր լեալ եւ զմնացեալսն ցան եւ ցիր անկեալ եւ սփռեալ յօտար ազգս, եւ սիրելի դաստակերտն իւր վանեալ վարատեալ եւ գերեալ յարքայորդւոյն Աշոտոյ եւ ի Հռովմայական զօրացն, եւ զայլս եւս զգերդաստանս նորա եւ զգեօղս յաւարի առեալ. ապա այնուհետեւ երկաքանչիւրքն նոքա իբրեւ զօտարածին թշնամիս ընդ միմեանս ի գրգռութիւն մարտից մարտուցեալ՝ ջանահնար լինէին զմիմեամբք ելանել ի հակառակութիւնս եւ ի կռիւս:	56:7 Upon his return, the sparapet found his land completely ravaged, some of his people massacred, others taken captive, while the remaining dispersed among the foreign nations, his beloved dastakert seized by Ashot, the son of king Smbat, and the Roman forces, and also the rest of his estates and villages ransacked. Thereupon, like foreign enemies, the sparapet and the king’s son fought one another in the heat of battle, and tried to outdo one another in their antagonism and animosity:
56:8 Եւ վասն զի ի վերայ երկոցունց նոցա թագաւորական անունս կառուցեալ եդեալ էր ի նախանձ չարակնութեան յաչաղման ընդ միմեանս բերեալ, վասն այնորիկ առաւել ընդվզեալ զչարէին՝ իւրաքանչիւրօք ի նոցանէ զիւրն խնդրելով կացուցանել:	56:8 And as both of them had been invested with the royal honor, they turned against one another in spiteful grudge and jealousy. For this reason, each one individually was incited more strongly in his attempt to establish his own sovereignty:
56:9 Յայսմ վայրի եկն ապա մեծ իշխանն Սիւնեաց Սմբատ ի Վասպուրական կողմանէ անտի առ արքայորդին Աշոտ. եւ բազում պատուասէր եւ սերտ հարազատութեամբ ընկալաւ զնա՝ մեծապանծ պատուով շքեղացուցեալ:	56:9 At this time, Smbat, the great prince of Siwnik’, came from the region of Vaspurakan to Ashot the son of king Smbat. The latter received him with great honors, and intimacy, and bestowed on him glorious distinctions:
56:10 Եկն եւ մեծ Հայկազունն Վասակ՝ եղբայր մանկազրաւ իշխանին Գրիգորոյ, եւ զնա եւս ի նոյն պատիւ պերճութեան վայելչական կարգօք մեծարէր:	56:10 There also came the great Hayk-descended prince Vasak, the brother of prince Grigor who was bereaved of his child, and he also was given the same honors in a befitting manner:
56:11 Եւ ապա հոմանունքն երկոքեան, որք զթագաւորական անուն ժառանգեալք էին՝ առաւել եւս սաստացուցանէին ի մէջ իւրեանց զաղմուկ խռովութեան:	56:11 Subsequently, the two name-sakes, who had inherited the royal title, intensified the tumultuous confusion between them:
56:12 Իսկ իմ ապա ըստ դիպաց ինչ ի ժամ դիպօղ ժամանեալ եկեալ հասեալ ի հեռաստանէ հալածանացն, եւ տարուբերեալ եւ համոզեալ ի մէջ նոցա՝ զվայելուչ եղբայրական լծակցութիւն պատրաստել ի մէջ նոցա ջանահնար լինէի: Ըստ որում ապա յունկնդրութիւն ինձ եկեալք երկաքանչիւրքն եւ հաւանական միտս ստացեալ՝ ի պայման միաբանական եւ խաղաղաւէտ սիրոյ հաստատեցի նոցա:	56:12 But by chance I returned from the distant land of my expatriation at the right time, and going back and forth, tried to persuade them, and establish the proper brotherly unity between them. Accordingly, both of them heeded me, and having received their willing consent, I set down among them the conditions of unity and peaceful co-existence:
