58:0 Յաղագս թէ իբրեւ մնացին Վահան եւ Մերուժան, թէ զի՛նչ շատ չարիս գործեցին ընդ երկիրս Հայոց. եւ կամ զիա՛րդ սատակեցան Վահան եւ կինն իւր յիւրեանց որդւոյն:

 58:0 How Meruzhan and Vahan remained in the land of the Armenians and what great evils they wrought there; how Vahan and his wife were slain slain by their own son:

58:1 Այնուհետեւ Վահանն մամիկոնեան եւ Մերուժանն արծրունի, սոքա երկոքեան արք պիղծք անօրէնք էին, ապստամբեալք էին յուխտէ աստուածապաշտութեանն, եւ զանաստուածն Մազդեզանց աղանդն յանձն առեալ պաշտէին. սկսան այնուհետեւ յերկրին Հայոց աւերել զեկեղեցիս` զտեղիս աղօթից քրիստոնէից յամենայն կողմանս Հայոց` գաւառաց գաւառաց եւ կողմանց կողմանց:

 58:1 Vahan Mamikonean and Meruzhan Arcruni, two abominable and impious men, had rebelled from the oath of worship of the Christian God and agreed to worship the non-gods of the Mazdean sect. Thereafter they began to destroy the churches in the country of Armenia the places of prayer for the Christians, in all parts of Armenia, in all the districts and regions:

58:2 Եւ նեղէին զբազում մարդիկ` զոր ի բուռն արկանէին, թողուլ զաստուածպաշտութիւն եւ ի պաշտօն դառնալ Մազդեզանցն:

 58:2 And they harassed many people whom they seized to abandon God and turn to the worship of the Mazdeans:

58:3 Եւ յետ այսորիկ տային հրաման Վահանն եւ Մերուժանն, զամենայն կանայս փախուցելոցն զնախարարացն` որ թողինն եւ գնացինն, տային հրաման ի բերդեանն զի նեղեսցեն զնոսա` դարձուցանել յօրէնս Մազդեզանց. եթէ ոչ առնուցուն յանձն, սատակեսցեն զամենեսեան չարաչար:

 58:3 Then Vahan and Meruzhan ordered that all the women whom the fugitive naxarars had left and abandoned should be harassed in the fortresses so that they turn to the Mazdean faith. If they did not agree to convert, all of them would be put to death wickedly:

58:4 Եւ բերդակալեանն յորժամ զայն հրաման ընկալան, ամենայն ոք ո՛ ոք առ ումեք էին` նեղեցին զնոսա ըստ հրամանին տուելոյ:

 58:4 When the fortress-keepers received this command, each one oppressed whoever was by him, as the command ordered:

58:5 Ապա իբրեւ ոչ մի ոք յանձն առնուին ուրանալ ի քրիստոնէութենէն, չարամահ սպանանէին զամենեսեան յամենայն ի բերդսն` յորս տուեալ էր զնոսա անդ:

 58:5 But when not a single one of them agreed to apostasize Christianity, all of them were wickedly killed in the fortresses where they were being held:

58:6 Իսկ Վահանայ էր քոյրաթիւ ի մամիկոնեան տոհմէն, քոյր Վարդանայ` Համազասպուհի. եւ էր նա կին Գարեգնի տեառնն Ռշտունեաց գաւառին:

 58:6 Now Vahan had a half-sister of the Mamikonean tohm, Vardan’s sister, named Hamazaspuhi. She was the wife of Garegin, lord of Rhshtunik district:

58:7 Զսա եթող եւ փախեաւ Գարեգին այր իւր ի ժամանակին, յորում եկն Շապուհ արքայ Պարսից յերկիրն Հայոց. իսկ զտիկինն Ռշտունեաց ի միջնաբերդն Վան բերդի, որ էր քաղաքն ի Տոսբ գաւառին:

 58:7 When Shapuh, king of Iran, had come to the country of Armenia, her husband Garegin left her and fled. The tikin of Rhshtunik was being kept at the citadel in the fortress of Van, which is a city in the district of Tosb:

58:8 Իսկ անօրէնն Վահան եւ Մերուժանն հրաման տային բերդակալին, զի նեղեսցէ զկինն. եթէ ոչ առցէ յանձն զօրէնս Մազդեզանցն, տայր հրաման կախել զբարձր աշտարակէն եւ սպանանել:

 58:8 The impious Vahan and Meruzhan ordered the fortress-keeper to harass the woman. The order was given that if she did not accept the Mazdean faith, she should be hanged from a lofty tower and killed:

58:9 Իբրեւ ոչ առնոյր յանձն Համազասպուհի պահել զօրէնս Մազդեզանցն, հանէին ի բարձր աշտարակն` որ կայր ի վերայ բարձր գահուն քարին, որ հային ի կողմն ծովակին ի գետոյ կուսէ. մերկացուցին զնա իբրեւ ի մօրէ. եւ արկեալ կապ զոտիցն, գլխիվայր կախեցին զնա զբարձուէն կուսէ. եւ այնպէս մեռաւ ի կախաղանին:

 58:9 When Hamazaspuhi did not consent to hold the faith of Mazdaism they took her to a high tower which was located over a high rock precipice. They stripped her naked, tied her feet and suspended her upside down from the height. Thus, she died from the hanging:

58:10 Եւ էր նա սպիտակ մարմնով, եւ պայծառ տեսանելով. կայր կախեալ յերեւոյթ տեսիլ նշանակի, եւ փաղփաղէր մարմինն ի բարձուէն զոր օրինակ ձիւն սպիտակութեամբն. եւ բազում մարդիկ ժողովէին տեսանել օր ըստ օրէ, զի իբրեւ սքանչելի ինչ երեւէր յաշխարհին:

 58:10 She had a white body and a dazzling appearance, and remained hanging there, a wondrous sight. Her body on high gleamed like white snow and many people came there every day to see it, as though it were a miraculous phenomenon:

58:11 Յայս տեսիլ տիկնոջն Համազասպուհեայ` էառ կին մի դայեակն նորին, ագաւ նա պարէգօտ մի` զոր անակիւղս կոչեն, եւ էած գօտի ընդ մէջ իւր. եւ կայր առ բարձր գահուն քարին ի ներքոյ աշտարակին` զորմէ կախեալ էր զսանն իւր, մինչեւ կողոպտեցաւ ամենայն մարմինք դիոցն:

 58:11 Seeing the sight of the tikin Hamazaspuhi, a woman, a dayeak of hers stood with an apron called anakiwghs tied around her waist, under the high precipice from which her pupil hanged. She waited until the entire body decomposed:

58:12 Եւ որչափ ի վայր վայրէին ոսկերքն, նա յիւր ծոցն ժողովէր բովանդակ զամենայն զոսկերս սանին. եւ առեալ գնաց յիւրսն:

 58:12 She gathered to her bosom alI the bones of her pupil as they fell, and then went to her own people:

58:13 Եւ այնչափ չար էին արքն երկոքին, զի անգամ իւրեանց ումեք ոչ ողորմէին. այլ անխնայութեամբ դատէին զօտարս եւ զիւրեանց ընդանիս:

 58:13 The two men Vahan and Meruzhan were so wicked that they did not even pity their own. Rather, without mercy they judged strangers as well as their own families:

58:14 Ատրուշանս շինէին ի բազում տեղիս, եւ զմարդիկ հնազանդէին օրինացն Մազդեզանց. եւ բազում յիւրեանց սեփհականսն շինէին ատրուշանս, եւ զորդիս եւ զազգայինս իւրեանց տային յուսումն Մազդեզանցն:

 58:14 They built atrushans in many places and made people obedient to the Mazdean faith. They built many atrushans on their own sephakan property and had their children and relatives’ study Mazdaism:

58:15 Ապա որդի մի Վահանայ, անուն Սամուէլ, եհար սատակեաց զՎահան զհայր իւր, եւ զՈրմիզդուխտ զմայր իւր` զքոյր Շապհոյ Պարսից թագաւորին. եւ ինքն փախստական լինէր յերկիրն Խաղտեաց:

 58:15 But one of Vahan’s sons, named Samuel, struck and killed his father, Vahan, and his mother, Ormizduxt who was the sister of king Shapuh of Iran. Then Samuel fled to the Xaghteats country:
