1:15 Այս երեսուն եւ հինգ արք, են որ յաւագ նախարարացն, եւ են որ ի կրսերագունիցն, սակայն ամենեքեան ըստ մարմնոյ են նախարարազունք, իսկ ըստ հոգեւոր առաքինութեանն ամենեքեան երկնային քաղաքացիք:

 1:15 Of these thirty-five men, some were from the upper nobility and some from the lesser; but they were all princes by birth and all citizens of heaven by spiritual virtue:

1:16 Եւ բազում եւս այլ ազատ մարդիկ, են որ յարքունի տանէ, եւ են որ ի տանէ նախարարացն իսկ նոցուն, նիզակակիցք եւ մարտակիցք քաջ նահատակացն:

 1:16 And there were many other nobles, some from the royal house, others from these same princely houses, fellow warriors and companions-in-arms of the valiant champions:

1:17 Եւ ամենեքին սոքա կամաւք մատնեցան ի սուրբ կապանս չարչարանացն:

 1:17 All of these willingly gave themselves up to holy bonds and torture:

1:18 Այլ մեք առ այժմ ոչ ընդ այս եմք զարմացեալ միայն, զի կամաւք չոգան մտին ի փորձութիւնն, այլ առաւել ընդ այն եմք սքանչացեալ, զի մարդիկ փափուկ իբրեւ զնոսա՝ ընդարձակասուն բնակիչք ձիւնեղէն լերանց՝ եղեն բնակիչք խորշակաբեր դաշտաց:

 1:18 Now we are not merely astonished at the fact that they willingly went to be tested, but we are more especially amazed that genteel men like them, raised to dwell at liberty in snowy mountains, became inhabitants of torrid plains:

1:19 Որ զաւրէն ազատ էրէոյ շրջէին ի մէջ ծաղկաբեր լերանց, ընկեցան ի բոցակէզ աշխարհն արեւելից կապեալ ոտիւք եւ կապեալ ձեռաւք:

 1:19 Those who like free deer used to roam flowering mountains were cast into the blazing land of the East, bound hand and foot:

1:20 Հաց նեղութեան եւ ջուր կարաւտանաց, խաւարարգել ի տուէ եւ անլոյս ի գիշերի, անվերարկուք եւ անանկողինք, գազանաբար գետնախշտիք լինէին զինն ամ եւ զվեց ամիս:

 1:20 Their food was the bread of affliction, (their drink) the water of want; they were locked in the dark by day and deprived of light by night; without covers or beds they slept like animals on the ground for nine years and six months:

1:21 Եւ այնպէս մեծաւ խնդութեամբ տանէին զնեղութիւնն, զի ամենեւին ոչ ոք տրտունջ հայհոյութեան ի բերանոյ նոցա լուաւ, այլ յորդառատ գոհացողութիւն ըստ նմանութեան բարեկեցիկ մարդկան, որ են յաստուածպաշտութեան:

 1:21 Yet they endured tribulations so joyfully that no one ever heard a murmur of blasphemy from their mouths but only continuous thanksgiving like that of happy men worshiping God:

1:22 Եւ մինչդեռ էին յայնպիսի նեղութեան, կարծիք եղեն ի միտս թագաւորին, թէ առ յոյժ վշտին ձանձրացեալ են դառնութեան կենաւքն իւրեանց:

 1:22 While they were in such dire straits, the thought came to the king’s mind that in their great affliction they would have become weary of their bitter existence:

1:23 Յղեաց առ նոսա զմեծ հազարապետն եւ ասէ. «Գոնեայ յայսմ հետէ զգաստացայք յանձինս ձեր, եւ մի՛ կայք ի նոյն յամառութեան. պագէք երկիր արեգական, եւ արձակիք ի չարաչար կապանացդ, եւ ունիք անդրէն զիւրաքանչիւր հայրենի կեանս ձեր:

 1:23 So, he sent the great hazarapet to them, saying: “At least from now on come to your senses and do not persist in that same obstinacy. Worship the sun and you will be freed from your cruel bonds and each of you will again possess your ancestral properties:

1:24 Ետուն պատասխանի երանելիքն եւ ասեն. «Առ փո՞րձ ինչ եկեալ հարցանես ցմեզ, եթէ արդարեւ թագաւորն իսկ յղեաց զքեզ:

 1:24 The blessed ones replied: “Have you come to question us in order to test us, or did the king really send you:

1:25 Երդուաւ հազարապետն եւ ասէ. «չիք այդր բան աւելի կամ պակաս, որ ոչ ի բերանոյ նորա ելեալ է:

 1:25 The hazarapet swore, saying: “There is not a word more here or a word less than what came from his mouth:
